Neville Stead Frontispiece: Blackpool North Shed, Easter: 1959 Glasgow excursion traffic brought a number of trains into the resort. This shed view shows Corkerhill’s 45707 Valiant and 45720 Indomitable; Standard Five 73099 and behind 72003 Clan Fraser, both from Polmadie. It’s interesting to note that 45707 and 45720 made return visits on 28 September 1959 for the Glasgow Fairs weekend. Also on shed were 45621 Northern Rhodesia (67A), along with 73059, 73099 and 72000 Clan Buchanan from Polmadie. Rear Cover: 45711 Courageous, Glasgow St Enoch: 18 May 1953 A superb portrait photograph of 45711. The loco spent ten years in Glasgow, allocated to both Corkerhill and Polmadie. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

Introduction ver a 3 year period 1934-36, 191 locomotives were built. 50 of O those locos were built in Glasgow at North British, split evenly between Queens Park and Hyde Park Works. December 1935 and the first Jubilees are allocated to the Northern Division. Ten of those newly built locos are sent to three locations. 29A Perth 5581/82/83/84 29F Aberdeen 5579/80, 5643/44 27J Kingmoor 5645/46 From the outset, the Northern Division Jubilees were shopped at St Rollox Works at Springburn, Glasgow. This continued right through to July 1962. Aberdeen lost its allocation in April 1939 when the four locos were transferred to Kingmoor. By 1940 a further fourteen locos had arrived and were allocated to Glasgow sheds; Corkerhill, Polmadie, St Rollox and surprisingly, one loco to Carstairs. At the end of the Second World War, a further five locos arrived, taking the region’s total to twenty nine. This remained unchanged through to 1962. By 1950, four sheds shared the locos: Perth, Corkerhill, Polmadie and Kingmoor. Early in 1960, only Corkerhill (with eleven) and Kingmoor (eighteen) shared the twenty nine locos. The Scottish Jubilees travelled widely in Scotland. South of the border they worked to Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool regularly. Titled trains using the locos were: The Thames Clyde Express The Waverley The Irishman The Saint Mungo By 1951, I was living in Blackpool and cycling to North and Central Sheds. Central had an allocation of seven Jubilees. I got my first sighting of a Scottish Jubilee in September 1952. It was at this time there were major changes in Scotland, with regard to their Jubilee allocation. To achieve boiler standardisation at St Rollox, fifteen Scottish locos were exchanged with fifteen from English sheds.

Two Jubilee locos at Blackpool Central were involved with 45697 Achilles moving to Kingmoor in exchange for 45580 Burma. 45707 Valiant moving to Polmadie in exchange for 45584 North West Frontier. The latter had just received a heavy general overhaul in August 1952 prior to its transfer. I was really impressed when I saw 45584 for the first time. It was in superb condition. It carried its first application of BR Brunswick Green paintwork. It had all the hallmarks of a St Rollox Works locomotive: Large 10” cabside numbers, nameplates fully painted with straw coloured lettering and border on a background of Vermillion Red. It was this event which started my particular interest in the Scottish locos. The Scottish Jubilees were rare visitors to Blackpool North. In the Summer holiday period there was always a chance one or two might arrive. Easter and September Glasgow Fairs weekends were always the best chance to see these locos. Motive power would come from Polmadie and Corkerhill in the form of Clan Pacifics, Standard 5’s, Black 5’s and Jubilees. Typically the trains left Central and St Enoch stations late on a Friday night, arriving at North station in the early hours of Saturday morning, return fare being 32 shillings or £1.60 in today’s money. By 1955, I was travelling further afield to pursue my hobby, a day in Carlisle being a firm favourite. It was a hotspot for the Scottish Jubilees and particularly with a visit to Kingmoor Shed. I was Glasgow bound in 1958, spending two nights in the city. I covered all the main sheds, including two visits to Corkerhill. This Glasgow visit yielded sixteen of the twenty nine Scottish Jubilees. As 1961 dawned, the visits of Corkerhill Jubilees were coming to an end. On the morning of 25th September, 45673 Keppel and 45727 Inflexible left North station for the last time. Within a year both locos lay withdrawn at Corkerhill and awaiting their last journey. Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the photographers whose work appears in the following pages. Stuart Ashworth Newcastle Upon Tyne, September 2021

The LMS built 190 Stanier 4-6-0 Jubilee locomotives, a total of 46 locos being allocated to Scotland during the period 1935-62. These locomotives can be divided in to four groups: 1 Engines allocated long term. 2 Engines transferred away in September 1952. 3 Engines arriving in the region in September 1952. 4 Engines allocated short term. Long term locos of the region accounted for thirteen: 45691/92/93, 45713/14/15/16/27/29/30/31/32. The longest serving members were 45713/14/16; those three locos being allocated to Kingmoor in excess of twenty five years. September 1952 and fifteen locos were transferred by the region to English sheds. This took place to standardise boilers at St Rollox Works.Locos involved: 45560/64/75/76/77/79/80/81/82/83/84, 45643/44/45/46. September 1952 and sixteen locos arrived in exchange: 45621/40/57/65/73/77/79/87/96/97, 45704/07/11/18/20/24. Short term locos, total 2: 45578 Jan 1936 – Apr 1942 45638 Feb 1936 – Sep 1940 Disposal of the Scottish Jubilees: It was fitting that of the twenty nine Scottish Jubilees, twenty met their end in the Glasgow area. First to go in 1962 were the 11 locos at 67A Corkerhill. These were sold to G.H Campbell and scrapped at their sites at Shieldhall and Airdrie: 45621/65/73/77/87/92/93, 45707/11/20/27. One other arrival at Airdrie was Kingmoor’s 45640 (stored at Upperby) in December 1964. The other Glasgow site was the BR workshops at Cowlairs. In 1963, eight Kingmoor Locos were scrapped here: 45713/14/15/18/24/28/29/31. Of the remaining nine locos, all were scrapped at English locations as follows: BR Crewe Works 45691 and 45716 BR Darlington Works 45679 Private yards 45657/96/97, 45704/30/32.

45584 North West Frontier. In 1982 I was reading a Railway Magazine when I saw a sale advert for the Jubilee nameplate North West Frontier. As it was my favourite Blackpool Jubilee with strong Scottish connections and from the North West, I could not resist. I was soon on my way to Leicester to meet the vendor; to my delight, we struck a deal. All these years later, I am still the proud owner. Suffice to say, it’s been in my ownership longer than it was carried on the loco! (Nameplate cast at St Rollox Works, fitted at Perth South Shed on 12 February 1938)

45564 New South Wales, Kingmoor. 24 September 1950 The Kingmoor clock shows 2.50 and 45564 poses on the south end of the shed. The loco is in ex-works condition, having left St Rollox Works on 26 August. This was the first loco to be outshopped by the works in BR Brunswick Green livery. Note the large 10” cabside numbers; a trademark of St Rollox. The nameplate is fully painted with straw lettering and vermillion red background, a nonstandard treatment; nameplates were normally left with brass letters on a gloss black background. A G Ellis, Transport Treasury

5575 Madras, Kingmoor. 10 April 1939 Madras in LMS Crimson Lake livery stands at Kingmoor. At this date, Polmadie was its home shed. From 1936 to 1952, it had spells allocated to Corkerhill, Polmadie, Kingmoor and Perth. It left Scotland at the end of August 1952 for Kentish Town. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45575 Madras, Perth. 30 June 1951 45575 is now seen in Brunswick Green. Note the BR block smokebox number plate. This type of number was also carried by two other Scottish engines, 45579 and 45692. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

5576 Bombay, Polmadie c.1939 Bombay on its home shed in dirty Crimson lake livery at the start of the Second World War. It emerged from St Rollox Works in July 1940 in wartime black livery. Transport Treasury

45581 Bihar and Orissa, Beattock. 12 July 1952 45581 on a northbound tank train has just passed Beattock Summit signal box, 1015 feet above sea level. The banking tank engine has just dropped back and can be seen in the top right of the photograph. A G Ellis, Transport Treasury

45581 nameplate c.1952 This plate was cast at St Rollox Works and fitted on 30 March 1938. This was the last locomotive in the class to have plates fitted. The St Rollox plates had different style letters to those cast at Crewe and Derby; they were thinner and slightly taller than the standard LMS ones. In this case it is clearly pained in the St Rollox manner of straw lettering on a vermillion red background.

5583 Assam, Holbeck. 29 May 1938 Assam of St Rollox shed is out of action at Holbeck with a set of driving wheels removed. Its Crimson Lake LMS livery is hardly visible under the grime. In August 1940, it would leave St Rollox Works in wartime black livery. P Fox, Transport Treasury

45583 Assam, Dalry Road. 4 June 1949 45583 is now shedded at Polmadie, finished in an unlined black but with ‘British Railways’ tender markings and BR cabside numbers. Transport Treasury

5584, Perth South c.1936 A fine portrait shot of 5584 at Perth South, as yet un-named. Note the polished North British Queens Park Works diamond worksplate. W S A Smith, Transport Treasury

45584 North West Frontier, Polmadie c.1948 Now a Polmadie loco, 45584 is shown in wartime black paintwork. It emerged from St Rollox Works in March 1948 with hand painted cabside numbers and tender lettering. The smokebox numberplate 5584 has been removed but no five digit plate was available. Approximately eleven Scottish Jubilees left St Rollox without smokebox numbers during this period. I wonder if the 27A shedcodes found their way to Bank Hall when Polmadie became 66A? M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45621 Northern Rhodesia, Corkerhill. 18 May 1953 45621 in clean Brunswick Green at its home shed. It arrived there from Millhouses in September 1952 but has not yet visited St Rollox Works yet to receive its larger cabside numbers. Transport Treasury

45640 Frobisher, Carnforth. August 1959 This Kingmoor Jubilee works southbound along the West Coast Main Line; reporting number W1282 indicates that the train is the Glasgow Central (depart 13.45) to Liverpool Exchange (arrive 18.30). Flint & Harbart, Transport Treasury

5643 Rodney, Corkerhill c.1943 Rodney on its home shed in a dirty condition, possibly patch painted in pre-1941 red livery. Transport Treasury

45643 Rodney, Polmadie. 28 September 1948 The loco is just ex-works from St Rollox in a BR unlined black, sitting in Polmadie down yard and receiving attention from the gentleman with the shunting pole. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45644 Howe, Carstairs. 20 August 1951 This loco stands in Carstairs shed yard with the coaling plant behind. It is in BR lined black livery, which it received in November 1949. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45645 Collingwood, Forfar. 26 April 1952 Corkerhill’s 45645 passes Forfar shed on a freight working. The loco presents a clean image, having received its Brunswick Green livery at St Rollox ex-works on 23 December 1951. H C Casserley

45645 Collingwood, Corkerhill. 29 October 1950 45645 in filthy condition rests at its home shed. The grey and dismal Glaswegian day does little to improve the situation! Transport Treasury

5646, Polmadie. 31 July 1936 An un-named 5646 is seen alongside the giant Polmadie coaling plant. The loco carries its first livery of LMS Crimson Lake. It received its Napier nameplates at St Rollox Works on 11 September 1937. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45646 Napier, Carstairs. 4 July 1952 Fifteen years on from the previous photograph, the loco is now in BR Brunswick Green livery. Its time as a Scottish-based loco was coming to a close, as it would leave Corkerhill at the end of August for Farnley Junction. Transport Treasury

45657 Tyrwhitt, St Rollox. 9 April 1955 45657 poses on St Rollox shed in superb condition. It had just left the nearby Works, after a heavy intermediate repair, before returning to Kingmoor. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45657 Tyrwhitt, Shap Summit. 1961 A great action shot of Tyrwhitt powering past Shap Summit signal box. Neville Stead

45665 Lord Rutherford of Nelson, Shields Road. 4 June 1954 This loco is working the ‘Starlight Special’, a summer season special that would leave Glasgow St Enoch at 8.35pm and travel through the night, arriving at London St Pancras at 7.12am. The return fare was 70 shillings. Note the unique headboard; this was a non-standard plate, presumably made at Corkerhill. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45665 Lord Rutherford of Nelson, Corkerhill. June 1957 45665 stands resplendent on its home shed of Corkerhill. The loco is just out of St Rollox Works and the red-backed nameplate shows how it was one of only two Jubilees to have a double line plate. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45673 Keppel, St Rollox. September 1955 45673 stands on St Rollox shed after leaving the nearby Works. Behind is fellow Perth engine ‘Crab’ 42800, also ex-works. It will need a visit to the coaling plant before its return home. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45673 Keppel, Garnqueen North Junction. 16 April 1960 By this date, Keppel had moved from Perth to Corkerhill, where it would become stored by the autumn of 1962. It is working a short four vehicle parcels train. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45677 Beatty, Glasgow St Enoch. 22 July 1955 The loco is departing with another ‘Starlight Special’. Reversing out of St Enoch is a Holbeck-allocated ‘Royal Scot’ heading for Corkerhill, having brought in the ‘Thames Clyde Express’. 45677 was the last ‘Jubilee’ to work the ‘Starlight Special’ on 1 July 1962; this ran for the last time on 22 September 1962, having commenced operation on 10 April 1953. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45677 Beatty, Busby Junction. 22 August 1959 Corkerhill Jubilee 45677 double heads with Kingmoor Black Five 44682. The train is at Busby Junction, travelling towards Kilmarnock on the Glasgow and South Western main line with a train from Glasgow St Enoch.

45679 Armada, Coatbridge Central. 22 September 1954 45679 is working a London Euston – Perth train on the North-South route through the Glasgow suburbs. Armada holds the Jubilee record for having received attention at no fewer than five separate BR workshops: Crewe, Derby, St Rollox, Cowlairs (in November 1959) before final scrapping at Darlington in November 1963. It was also the last Jubilee to be shopped at St Rollox Works in July 1962. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45679 Armada, Beattock Summit. 16 July 1955 Armada heads north, having just reached Beattock Summit; there is a very varied mix of parcels vans in the consist. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45687 Neptune, Glasgow Central. 9 June 1956 Corkerhill’s 45687 awaits at Glasgow’s Central station with the grimy station façade as the backdrop. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

5691 Orion, Polmadie. 11 April 1948 An interesting picture of Orion on its home shed: Livery is the 1946 black, with maroon and straw lining. It still carries LMS branding and a four digit cabside number. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45692 Cyclops, Polmadie. 8 June 1953 Cyclops at Polmadie, missing its nameplate and backplate. From photos of it in the compiler’s collection, it ran with the plates missing for at least twelve months. This was an extremely rare situation – can any reader explain this? M.L.S./A C Gilbert

45692 Cyclops, North Queensferry. 15 June 1957 Now re-united with the missing plates, Cyclops approaches the Forth Bridge. The rare 1948 block style of smokebox number shows up well. By coincidence, the compiler’s friend David Anderson was at Dalmeny station and took a photograph of the loco on the same day as John Robertson. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45693 Agamemnon, Corkerhill. June 1948 45693 on its home shed in post war all-black unlined livery. The loco has no smokebox numberplate, which was not uncommon at this time on St Rolloxshopped Jubilees. It remained at Corkerhill until withdrawal in autumn 1962. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45696 Arethusa, St Rollox. June 1955 The loco is ex-works after receiving a light intermediate repair. It was a Kingmoor loco at this time but moved to Crewe North in June 1959. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45696 Arethusa, Law Junction. 26 April 1958 Arethusa heads south through Law Junction, working a Glasgow Central – Carlisle train. Law Junction was where the North-South through lines split away from the route to Glasgow Central terminus; all freight trains heading to Mossend Yard would leave the main line here. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45697 Achilles, Blackpool Central. 1950 Achilles was not a Scottish Region engine at this time but shedded at 24E Blackpool Central. Being from the compiler’s home town, with the famous tower as the backdrop, this view is a must! In addition, the loco is in excellent condition. It would move to Kingmoor in August 1952 in exchange for 45580 Burma. Neville Stead

45697 Achilles, Glasgow St Enoch. 19 April 1957 Fast forward seven years and Achilles leaves St Enoch double headed with fellow Jubilee 45573 Newfoundland of Holbeck shed. The train is the southbound ‘Starlight Express’ and this was the inaugural working of the 1957 season. On occasions when this train was double headed, the lead engine would come off at New Cumnock. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45704 Leviathan, St Rollox. August 1957 Kingmoor’s Leviathan alongside the St Rollox coaling stage. Was this the only wooden structured plant to have a large dial clock face in its cladding? The nameplate shows up well, with its straw lettering on a red background. C. Lawson Kerr, Transport Treasury

45704 Leviathan, Appleby West. 1955 45704 heads south with a lengthy van train. The train and locomotive are nicely framed by the station’s lattice girder over bridge. Neville Stead

45707 Valiant, Carstairs. 6 June 1953 The loco is in a clean condition, having left St Rollox Works on 23 May 1953. On this works visit, it had received its first application of BR Brunswick Green livery. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45711 Courageous, Glasgow St Enoch. 29 June 1961 Moving on eight years (from the view seen on the back cover) and once again Courageous is captured at St Enoch. Its condition now has a rundown and dirty look about it; it would be withdrawn at Corkerhill in autumn 1962. G C Betts, Transport Treasury

45713 Renown, Kingmoor. 1952 Renown is photographed on its home shed of Kingmoor, alongside the very smart office building there. Neville Stead

45713 Renown, Pollockshaws West. 17 July 1958 The loco is working the Glasgow St Enoch – Eastbourne car/sleeper train. This ran three days per week: On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Departure from St Enoch was at 7.45pm and arrival at Eastbourne was at 9.10am, a thirteen hour journey – was this the longest in the country? Return fare for one adult plus car was £22. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

5714 Revenge, Kingmoor. 10 April 1949 Revenge is shown on its home shed in LMS Crimson Lake livery. The loco was a long term resident at Kingmoor; it arrived in November 1936 and left for Carnforth in September 1961, a stay of more than 23 years. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

Above: M5714 Revenge, Polmadie. 1948 Now Revenge is seen with its ‘M’ prefix cabside number; this was not commonplace, with only about fifteen Jubilees carrying this, of which St Rollox Works provided four examples – 5575, 5693, 5714 and 5727. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury Opposite: 45714 Revenge, Carlisle. 1956 An interesting view showing 45714 with incorrect size tender emblem. Standard practice on the smaller Fowler tender was to carry the smaller tender emblem. Locos with Stanier tenders carried the larger one. This also occurred on 45679 when it left St Rollox Works in July 1962, carrying the wrong larger emblem on its Fowler tender. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45715 Invincible, Carstairs. 30 July 1952 45715 heads north from Carstairs station, passing under an impressive signal gantry. Transport Treasury

45715 Invincible, St Rollox. 27 June 1952 Loco just ex-works before return to Kingmoor. Train illustrates September 1953 reported the loco had left the works with only lining to one Cabside. Why was this released in this condition? The photo clearly shows plain boiler barrel, frames and tender. Note the construction of the Glasgow tenement blocks in the background, the future backdrop to the shed premises. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45715 Invincible, Law Junction. 19 March 1955 Invincible departs Law Junction on a local working from Glasgow Central to Lanark. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45716 Swiftsure, Glasgow Central. 18 September 1961 Kingmoor’s 45716 enters Central station, the loco being in a filthy condition. At this time it was in its last twelve months as a Kingmoor engine, transferring to Agecroft on 30 July 1962. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45718 Dreadnought, Beattock. 16 August 1955 45718 storms Beattock Bank with a London – Perth express. Behind the loco is an impressive uniform rake of mark 1 carriages in carmine and cream livery. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45718 Dreadnought, Polmadie. 1961 45718 rests on Polmadie, now adorned with electrification warning stickers. It would leave Kingmoor in July 1962, bound for Agecroft. However, within three months of arrival there, it was withdrawn. It was then removed to St Rollox for storage and would reach Cowlairs (for scrapping) in December 1963. Neville Stead

45720 Indomitable, Patricroft. 1950 45720 is just out of Crewe Works in this shot, having just received its first coat of BR Brunswick Green livery. The loco was transferred to Corkerhill in September 1952. It spent ten years there before withdrawal came in autumn 1962. Norman Kneale, Transport Treasury

45720 Indomitable, Corkerhill. 5 June 1954 Now it is at Corkerhill, though still with small cabside numbers. Although it was in St Rollox Works in May 1953, mysteriously it did not receive the large 10” numerals. This was rectified in the mid- 1950s but by 1958, it was back with the smaller 8” type; it would carry those to the end in 1963. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45724 Warspite, St Rollox. 9 July 1955 Warspite is seen ex-St Rollox Works, awaiting its return to Kingmoor. Note the extra embellishments to the smokebox door straps; these have been painted white, which was not normal practice. Transport Treasury

45724 Warspite, Dalmeny. 20 July 1959 45724 approaches Dalmeny station with the Forth Bridge in the distance. Unlike the previous picture of this loco, it now has a Stanier tender, which it received at St Rollox in January 1959. It appears to have swapped tenders with 45728, which was also in St Rollox at this time – what was the reason for the swap? Both locos were allocated to Kingmoor. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45727 Inflexible, Carstairs. 30 July 1952 45727 enters Carstairs station with a Glasgow Central – Carlisle local stopping train. At this time it was a Kingmoor loco, moving to Perth in March 1953. Transport Treasury

45727 Inflexible, St Rollox. 25 April 1953 Inflexible passes St Rollox shed, working out of Glasgow Buchanan Street and heading north to Stirling. By this date, 45727 was a Perth loco. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45727 Inflexible, Cowlairs Works. 19 September 1960 45727 is captured at Cowlairs Works. It was one of only two Scottish Jubilee locos to receive works attention away from St Rollox; it followed 45679 Armada, which was there in November 1959. It has already received the Cowlairs trademark of the white bordering around the smokebox numberplate. H C Casserley

45728 Defiance, Perth. 3 September 1955 Kingsmoor’s 45728 departs Perth on a London working. The loco will take this train through to Carlisle. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45728 Defiance, Perth. 28 May 1960 Defiance leaves Perth again on a London working; it has assistance from fellow Kingmoor loco 45718 Dreadnought. 45728 now has a Fowler tender, replacing the Stanier one that it lost to 45724. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45729 Furious, Kingmoor. 25 June 1950 Furious is on its home shed in early BR livery of unlined plain Black with ‘British Railways’ in full on the tender. Eric Blakey, Transport Treasury

45729 Furious, St Rollox. 11 September 1955 A very interesting picture of 45729: The photo shows the loco in the St Rollox Works dump, minus cab windows and with spot paint marks on the boiler barrel. It entered the Works in June 1955 for a general repair, leaving on 22 October. In the background can be seen the tenement blocks mentioned earlier. H C Casserley

45729 Furious, Glasgow St Enoch. 3 October 1959 45729 works into St Enoch with what appears to be a local working from the coastal towns of Ardrossan or Ayr. WAC Smith, Transport Treasury

45730 Ocean, Stirling. 26 August 1950 Kingsmoor’s Ocean stands at the north end of Stirling shed. It had recently left St. Rollox Works, still in unlined black post-war livery. It appears to have fresh cabside numbers but it is still missing the lion and wheel tender emblem, introduced in August 1949. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45730 Ocean, Beattock c.1955 45730 passes Beattock Summit signal box on a northbound empty coal train. The banking engine has dropped off and is just visible in the top right. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury

45731 Perseverance, Motherwell. 6 June 1953 45731 is heading north out of Motherwell station working ‘W211’, the Birmingham New Street to Edinburgh Princes Street train. It appears to be using a rather circuitous route to Edinburgh, via Cumbernauld and Falkirk. Transport Treasury

45732 Sanspareil, Crewe North. 7 May 1949 Kingmoor’s 45732 is shown at Crewe North. The livery is BR lined black with ‘British Railways’ tender lettering. It had a light intermediate repair at St Rollox in March 1949 and emerged from there with this livery. H C Casserley

45732 Sanspareil, St Rollox. 16 June 1957 Long term Kingmoor loco 45732 rests on St Rollox. It arrived at Kingmoor in April 1937 and left there in July 1962, a span of close on 25 years. The nameplate was originally carried by ‘Royal Scot’ 6126. M J Robertson, Transport Treasury
