Frontispiece: Following diversion of services from the High Level to the Low Level station at Savernake effective from 15th September 1958 tracks through the former were utilised for wagon storage as this view taken on 19th September 1959 reveals. Although this closure was billed as temporary, citing weak underbridges crossing the Kennet & Avon canal and the Western mainline near Wolfhall Junction, this like so many other “temporary” closures turned out to be permanent and by the spring of 1960 tracks had been lifted through the High Level station. The moment of token exchange at Red Post Junction to the west of Andover is captured by the photographer on board the afternoon Swindon Town to Andover service hauled by U Class No. 31795. This wartime “utility” signalbox was opened in 1943 when a junction was made with the LSWR double track mainline although the original MSWJR line continued to parallel the main line right into the Hampshire town. The signalbox closed in September 1963.

This June 1966 view of a rather dilapidated Weyhill station reveals that the former double track on the section from Andover, which was put in as a wartime measure during September 1943, has been singled. This was carried out in August 1961 but notice that a couple of platform barrows remain on the platform in the expectation of any goods traffc offering, a facility which was not withdrawn here until December 1969. This was a far cry from the days of the busy Weyhill Fair which originally took place three times in the year, in April for trading cattle, July for selling lambs and in October for hops. The goods yard would be full to capacity at fair time with nearly 200 wagons necessitating the employment of no less than three shunting horses. The fair was immortalised by Thomas Hardy as Weydon Priors in his novel “The Mayor of Casterbridge” where the protagonist Michael Henchard sells his wife. RCR17966

In spite of appearances Weyhill signalbox was still operational at the time of this view taken on 9th July 1956. This 20 lever box to a standard Gloucester Wagon Co. design was to close consequent upon the singling of the line to Andover. Andover Museum now houses the signalbox sign together with one of the Weyhill station signs. Double track between here and Ludgershall had been instituted in August 1900. R507

Chiseldon station seen here looking south on 23rd October 1959 was quite well used especially by commuters and shoppers going into Swindon for the day and by schoolchildren as train timings were well suited to offce and school hours and indeed two services daily from Swindon terminated here.

separate Goods Offce which had been added during the GWR era can be seen on the up platform and bi-directional running was in operation from 1952 when the signalbox here could be switched out. At one time the area’s famous racing stables had provided much horsebox traffc for the railway.

sporting an 82C (Swindon) shedplate. The adjacent Elm Tree pub with its porch seen on the left still stands guard today although it now looks out on a grassy area where the old station could once be found. H1796

A busier scene at Swindon Town reveals pannier tank No. 9740 waiting to attach a van on to an incoming train hauled by U Class No. 31793 on 15th August 1959. The station platforms were over 500 feet long, an overly generous provision in the latter days of two or three coach trains. Water cranes were provided at both ends of the station and in the far distance can be seen the 150 foot long Goods Shed which contained an internal loading platform and 5 ton crane. General goods traffc ceased from May 1964 but coal continued to be dealt with until November 1966 and oil trains to the nearby Esso depot ran until 1968. H964

Top: The SLS special with its seven coach consist of Mark 1 coaches storms away from its Marlborough stop on the southbound leg of this railtour which had started from Snow Hill station in Birmingham and run via Stratford-upon-Avon, Cheltenham Malvern Road and the M&SWJR to Andover. Billed as the fnal train to run over the northern half of the line it diverted to Swindon Works siding on its northbound return to collect those tour participants who had opted to visit the Works for an extended tour. Known locally as the “Tiddly-Dyke” or the “Milky Way”, the latter soubriquet due to the volume of that dairy commodity carried by the line, this long cross country route linking the Midlands via Cheltenham with the South Coast at Southampton via Andover closed over 60 years ago and this volume attempts to capture some of the favour of the old line. It was always a thorn in the side of the GWR through whose territory it ran audaciously daring to serve the heartland of the company at Swindon. Passing neither to the LMS nor the Southern at the Grouping, as one might have expected given the railway’s title, the line became part of the GWR empire and it was to be the Western Region of British Railways that oversaw the run down and eventual closure to passengers in September 1961. Perhaps not as well loved as similar north to south routes such as the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton or the Somerset & Dorset, the M&SWJR nevertheless has a considerable following which has been refected in the number of books about the line published since its closure and in the preservation today of part of its course near Swindon.
