In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.

Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.

Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.

Libby Cole begins her third year with the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2016-17 after two years at Division I Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. At Wright State, Cole worked as a graduate assistant and certified athletic trainer. She received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Miami (Ohio) University before earning a masters degree in physical education and sports management from Wright State.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.

Nick Reuss begins his sixth year with the Transylvania sports medcine staff and his first as Head Athletic Trainer for the 201617 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

NICK REUSS HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER

Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings over seven years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.

Pioneers Coaching Staff

Fulks’s track record of leading and winning has spanned multiple stops, with the latest tradition of excellence blooming in Lexington with the Pioneers women’s basketball program.

Fulks comes to Lexington from Portland, Oregon where she served for 10 years as the head coach at NCAA Division III Lewis & Clark College, one of the Top 75 National Liberal Arts Colleges in the country. Fulks took over at Lewis & Clark prior to the 200405 season, inheriting a team that posted a 1-15 conference record. In her first season at the helm, Fulks led her team to an 8-8 record in Northwest Conference play and a 12-12 overall mark in one of the 20 most-improved seasons in the nation. Under Fulks’ guidance, Lewis & Clark found its place atop the USA Today Top-25 rankings each of the past three years, ranking as high as fifth nationally in 2013 on the way to a 25-4 season.

Following the 2011 season, Fulks was named NWC Coach of the Year while player Kristina Williams Fulks took the Pioneers to new heights in her first year, guiding the team to its highest national ranking earned NWC Player of the Year honors. Alongside Fulks at both Lewis & Clark and Transylvania, Bray has been part of some of the most successful seasons at both programs; Transylvania won the HCAC Conference crown in 2014-15, while the Lewis & Clark Pioneers won the Northwest Conference regular season title in 2012-2013.

Bray was part of a coaching staff that presided over the winningest era in Lewis & Clark women’s basketball history, which included two conference titles, three NCAA Division III tournament appearances, and three consecutive seasons of being nationally ranked in the D3hoops.com and WBCA Top 25 polls.

Jim Bray

TRANSYLVANIA UNIVERSITY

Jim Bray enters his third year as an assistant coach with the Transylvania women’s basketball team and his fifth year as an assistant coach under Juli Fulks. Bray came to Transylvania in the summer of 2014 from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where he served as an assistant women’s basketball coach under Fulks for the prior two seasons.

Bray also serves as an assistant baseball coach for the Pioneers baseball program, specializing in recruiting, hitting, and player development.

Maggie Prewitt is in her third year with Transylvania, serving as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program. Prewitt, a 2012 Centre College graduate, had a decorated playing career, win which she was named 2009 SCAC Newcomer of the Year, 2010 SCAC First Team, two-time SCAC Player of the Year (2011, 2012), South Region Player of the Year and a D3hoops.com First Team All-American (2012).

Prior to joining the Transylvania staff, Prewitt worked as the head coach for the middle school and freshmen women’s basketball teams in the Bath County School District, and an assistant coach for the JV and varsity women’s basketball teams.

In the summer of 2015, Prewitt joined a select number of elite women’s assistants from across the country as part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association Leadership Workshop hosted by the United States Marine Corps.

Loren Bewley Assistant Coach

Loren Bewley begins her third season as a volunteer assistant to the women’s basketball team in 2016-17. Bewley, a 2009 Transylvania alumni, received her Master of science from Eastern Kentucky University in 2014. During her time at Transy from 2005-2009, Bewley was a four-year member of the softball team and a three-year member of the women’s basketball program. After graduating, Bewley held a number of assistant coaching positions prior to joining the Pioneers, including stints at West Jessamine Middle School, West Jessamine High School and The Lexington School. She received a bachelor of arts in Psychology and a minor in exercise science from Transylvania before earning her MS in physical education with a concentration in sports administration from EKU.

Tim Whitesel Assistant Coach Tim Whitesel begins his third season as an assistant coach with the Pioneers staff and continues his tenure as a longtime assistant under Juli Fulks dating back to their coaching days at Lewis & Clark College. Prior to joining the TU staff, Whitesel served as an Associate Head Coach for the women’s basketball program at Lewis & Clark College for 10 years. While at Lewis & Clark, the Pioneers won the Northwest Conference regular season title twice and advanced to the NCAA tournament three times. Before his time as an assistant at Lewis & Clark, Whitesel was the Girls Basketball Head Coach at Sunset High School in Portland, Oregon, and coached collegiate men’s basketball at Concordia University (Oregon) and Eastern Oregon University. A native of Fredonia, New York, Whitesel earned his B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Philosophy from State University of New York, College at Fredonia. and later obtained graduated with his M.S. in Zoology and later his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences. Tim also works as a Fisheries Scientist for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and serves as an Adjunct Professor for Portland State University’s Department of Biology. 12
