In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.
Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings eight years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.
Nick Reuss begins his eighth year with the Transylvania sports medcine staff and his third as the Director of Sports Medicine for the 2018-19 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

NICK REUSS DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE
Christa Hendley joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in November 2017. Hendley carries over five years of experience in the athletic training realm to Transylvania. Prior to her time at Transy, Hendley served as the Head Athletic Trainer at the University of the Cumberlands from 2014 through 2017, overseeing men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, cheerleading, softball, track and field, and dance during her tenure at Cumberlands. Previous stints for Hendley include working at Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics as a Head Athletic Trainer and at Chowan University.

Kevin Pioneers Coaching Staff Calhoun A veteran coach with deep roots in the Bluegrass, Calhoun is no stranger to winning and has guided a resurgence of the tradition-rich Transylvania women’s and men’s tennis teams as he heads into his third season at Transy. Calhoun came to Transylvania in August of 2016 after a six-year stint as the assistant women’s tennis coach at the University of Kentucky. Before his time at Kentucky, Calhoun served as the head coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams at his alma mater, Georgetown College (Ky.). At each of his coaching stops, the constant has been the maximization of individual talent and maximization of the team. Aiming to continue the tradition of two winning programs at Transy, Calhoun leans upon his time spent as a head and assistant coach at multiple stops around the Bluegrass region to teach the next generation of Transylvania tennis players. “What I’ve learned through my coaching career is that for the team to be most successful, the whole has to be greater than the sum of its parts,” says Calhoun. “I believe that’s accomplished by having a culture of selflessness and group success. What sets apart this institution and this program is the family environment and the mindset that we practice and play as a united team.” The 2017-18 season for the Transylvania tennis teams, the second under Calhoun’s stead witnessed regrowth and a seizing of momentum for each team. The Transylvania women’s team produced HCAC First-Team selection Mary Grace Amato and Honorable Mention winners Lili Williams and Merrick Irwin. The Pioneers clinched another HCAC Tournament berth and earned ITA All-Academic Team honors. After a one-year absence from the HCAC Tournament, the Transylvania men’s tennis team returned to the conference tournament in 2017-18 to set the course for a new chapter of Transylvania men’s tennis. Senior Luke Groene earned his second straight All-HCAC First Team award while freshman Dylan Moore was named an Honorable Mention.

Calhoun’s appointment in the summer of 2016 with Transylvania Tennis carried him just a few blocks down Lexington from his most recent position at the University of Kentucky, where he served as the women’s tennis assistant coach for the past six years. During his time as an assistant coach for the Wildcats women’s tennis team, Kentucky made great strides, improving from a twowin season upon his arrival in 2010 to an 18-win season and a top-15 national ranking in 2016. Under Calhoun’s guidance, the Wildcats produced the doubles tandem of Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjadi, who became the first Kentucky duo to reach a quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament in over a decade. The two were named All-Americans in spring of 2016, becoming the ninth and tenth student-athletes under Calhoun’s tutelage to achieve AllAmerican status. Calhoun has forged a career built upon success and top-level results that preceded his tenure at the University of Kentucky; a 1998 graduate of Georgetown College (Ky.), Calhoun served as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach from 2000 through 2010, developing eight All-Americans and earning the 2010 East Region NAIA Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year award. “We will recruit young men and women who will represent themselves on the court and off,” espouses Calhoun. “I’m very enthusiastic about providing an extraordinary experience for the students, and helping them build relationships with teammates which will never fade.” Calhoun also served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for the Georgetown athletic department from 2002 to 2008. In addition to his coaching duties at multiple Central Kentucky institutions, Calhoun was an official for the ATP and WTA professional tennis tours. Between 1998 and 2007, these assignments saw Calhoun officiate two women’s singles finals at the US Open along with matches at Wimbledon and the Davis Cup. A return to glory for Kentucky women’s tennis in 2016 culminated a six-year odyssey for Calhoun, who coached three All-SEC selections, three All-SEC freshman selections, one regional Rookie of the Year, an SEC Brad Davis award winner, and an Elite 89 award recipient.
