WELCOME TO
President Seamus Carey
As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.

Kevin Calhoun
Pioneers Coaching Staff
HEAD COACH
Kevin Calhoun is in his second year as head coach of Transylvania men’s and women’s tennis in 2017-18. The former University of Kentucky women’s tennis assistant guides both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Transylvania. Aiming to continue the tradition of two winning programs, Calhoun leans upon his time spent as a head and assistant coach at multiple stops around the Bluegrass region to teach the next generation of Transylvania tennis players. “Kevin has strong character and competence which gives me great trust in what he will do at Transylvania as he continues to elevate our program,” says Vice President for Enrollment and Student Life, Dr. Holly Sheilley. Calhoun wrapped up his first season at Transylvania in 2016-2017, a season that encompassed another trip to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for an unheralded young squad. His Pioneers women’s team picked up five wins in conference play to set the tone for the next step in the program’s rise. In the spring, Calhoun oversaw a young men’s squad that had its mettle tested by strong programs in the HCAC and endured a solid spring break slate of opponents that refined its resolve. By season’s end, junior Luke Groene had earned an All-HCAC First Team selection as the leader and captain of Calhoun’s first voyage with the Pioneers. Calhoun’s appointment in late summer 2016 with Transylvania Tennis carried him just a few blocks down Lexington from his most recent position at the University of Kentucky, where he served as the women’s tennis assistant coach for the past six years. During his time as an assistant coach for the Wildcats women’s tennis team, Kentucky made great strides, improving from a two-win season upon his arrival in 2010
10
to an 18-win season and a top-15 national ranking this past season. Under Calhoun’s guidance, the Wildcats produced the doubles tandem of Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjadi, who became the first Kentucky duo to reach a quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament in over a decade. The two were named All-Americans in spring of 2016, becoming the ninth and tenth student-athletes under Calhoun’s tutelage to achieve All-American status. Calhoun has forged a career built upon success and toplevel results that preceded his tenure at the University of Kentucky; a 1998 graduate of Georgetown College (Ky.), Calhoun served as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach from 2000 through 2010, developing eight All-Americans and earning the 2010 East Region NAIA Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year award. “We will recruit young men and women who will represent themselves on the court and off,” espouses Calhoun. “I’m very enthusiastic about providing an extraordinary experience for the students, and helping them build relationships with teammates which will never fade.” Calhoun also served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for the Georgetown athletic department from 2002 to 2008. In addition to his coaching duties at multiple Central Kentucky institutions, Calhoun was an official for the ATP and WTA professional tennis tours. Between 1998 and 2007, these assignments saw Calhoun officiate two women’s singles finals at the US Open along with matches at Wimbledon and the Davis Cup. A return to glory for Kentucky women’s tennis in 2016 culminated a six-year odyssey for Calhoun, who coached three All-SEC selections, three All-SEC freshman selections, one regional Rookie of the Year, an SEC Brad Davis award winner, and an Elite 89 award recipient. Asked to describe his approach which has generated impressive results at Kentucky and Georgetown, Calhoun says: “I am an upbeat, positive coach that helps studentathletes develop a confident mindset that allows them to play as the best version of themselves.”
