In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 27 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 50 conference championships, more than 57 NCAA tournament appearances, 53 Coach of the Year awards and 78 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.
Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings eight years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.
CHRISTA HENDLEY ASST. ATHLETIC TRAINER Christa Hendley joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in November 2017. Hendley carries over five years of experience in the athletic training realm to Transylvania. Prior to her time at Transy, Hendley served as the Head Athletic Trainer at the University of the Cumberlands from 2014 through 2017, overseeing men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, cheerleading, softball, track and field, and dance during her tenure at Cumberlands. Previous stints for Hendley include working at Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics as a Head Athletic Trainer and at Chowan University.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.
Nick Reuss begins his eighth year with the Transylvania sports medcine staff and his third as the Director of Sports Medicine for the 2018-19 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

Terry Justice HEAD COACH
Terry Justice, a Lacrosse institution in the state of Kentucky, enters his seventh year as head coach of the Transylvania men’s lacrosse program. The race to the top has been a rapid and steady rise for Justice, who has crafted a nationally-respected power in the Commonwealth in just seven short years. Named Transylvania’s first men’s lacrosse coach in June 2011, Justice has quickly guided the program into an annual contender in the Division III men’s lacrosse landscape. In six years as the beacon of Transylvania men’s lacrosse, Justice has created a team that has never experienced a losing season. The Pioneers reign as the four-time defending champions of the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference. The only head coach in the history of Transylvania’s lacrosse program, Justice brings the Pioneers men’s lacrosse program into 2019 fresh off its second consecutive trip into the NCAA Tournament and a legacy as the greatest team in the four-year history of the ORLC. As the Pioneers enter a new lacrosse conference, the Midwest-based HCLC for 2019, Justice aims to write a new winning chapter with the Transylvania men’s lacrosse team. Justice’s most recent season with the Pioneers in 2018 featured another display of championship excellence. Bringing together a young and talented squad, Justice’s Pioneers reeled off a 9-1 record in ORLC conference play to finish the regular season as conference co-Champions, achieving their fourth straight regular-season conference championship in the process. Transylvania rode that momentum to their fourth consecutive ORLC Tournament championship with a resounding 12-2 victory at St. Vincent to clinch its second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Along with furnishing team success, a cavalcade of studentathletes earned 2018 postseason honors under Justice’s direction, led by sophomore TJ Toivonen, the ORLC Defensive Player of the Year. Toivonen, sophomore Trenton Sneed, and junior Webb VanMeter each earned All-ORLC First Team recognition, while Nic Bailey, Ben Kraft, and Paul Stickel each earned a spot on the All-ORLC Second Team. Another six players from the 2018 squad were named All-ORLC Honorable Mention. The influx of postseason recognition was punctuated with Toivonen becoming the first Pioneer in program history to be named IMLCA All-Region as an Honorable Mention Defense selection.

The 2017 season marked the third straight season in which the Pioneers captured the ORLC regular season and tournament title as the Pioneers defeated St. Vincent 12-1 in the conference championship. The critical victory earned the Pioneers the conference’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, vaulting Transylvania into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Transylvania’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament ended in the second round against Hampden-Sydney to conclude a 13-4 run, the most wins in one season by a Pioneer men’s lacrosse squad. Along with the historic moment embedded in the conference tournament championship, the victory also served as a milestone for Justice, who collected his 50th career head coaching win in the process. Justice’s teams have consistently carved out an identity as one of defensive excellence combined with clearing precision. In 2017, senior goalie Cooper Fogle led the nation in goals-against average, holding opponents to 6.32 goals per game. The Pioneers also led the nation in clearing percentage in 2017. That string cemented a pattern of three consecutive seasons in which the Pioneers have finished in the top-five nationally in scoring defense and clearing efficiency. During that run of defensive excellence, multiple players under Justice have ranked in the top-20 nationally in face-off percentage. With that team success has also come a cornucopia of individual recognition. In 2017, Fogle received his second consecutive ORLC Defensive Most Valuable Player award while senior attacker Clark Watts was named the ORLC co-Offensive Most Valuable Player, leading a list of six All-ORLC First teamers. In total, 11 Pioneers received all-conference postseason recognition. In 2016, the Pioneers put together a 10-6 run and 6-1 record in ORLC regular season play en route to their second consecutive conference regular season and tournament titles. Nine Pioneers earned All-ORLC awards to cap off another conference championship season. The year before, the Pioneers went 11-6 and 5-1 in the ORLC, winning the ORLC Tournament Championship at home over St. Vincent. Following the 2015 season, Justice was named the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Coach of the Year and saw 11 players garner postseason awards. The Pioneers completed 2015 as both ORLC conference tournament and regular season champions. Justice and the sport of Lacrosse in Kentucky have experienced an intertwined relationship since he arrived to the Bluegrass in the late 1970s. Discovering a passion and love for the sport in his high school years, Justice continued his pursuit of the game at the University of Kentucky where he helped form the first men’s lacrosse club team at Kentucky and played from 1979-1983. In 2003, Justice was made the full-time head coach of the Lexington Catholic Lacrosse program. Justice went on to coach at Lexington Catholic from 2004 through 2011, winning the Kentucky State High School Coach of the Year award in 2004 and 2005. At Lexington Catholic, Justice compiled a 73-33 record and led the Knights to state runner-up showings in 2006 and 2008.
Pioneers Coaching Staff Since his arrival to Transy in 2011, the program has bloomed into one of the premier programs in Division III. The Pioneers have carved out a reputation for fastidious defense, precision clearing, and a physicality rooted in chemistry and blue-collar work ethic. The Pioneers have averaged 10 wins a season and their success stems from key beliefs by their head coach. “I’m very invested in Kentucky lacrosse and these kids who play the game,” says Justice. “What intrigues me on a day-to-day basis is teaching the fundamentals of the game, and figuring out ways to teach our kids fundamentals every day. Fundamentals are the components to execution; that’s how you win or lose.”
In addition to his duties as head coach of Transylvania men’s lacrosse, Justice also serves as the assistant athletic director at Transylvania for Outdoor Facilities. that does come into the equation, but more importantly what kind of

Combining one season as a volunteer assistant and the last five as a full-time assistant, the Pioneers have produced winning records in all five seasons, culminating in Transylvania’s first two trips to the NCAA Tournament in successive seasons in 2017 and 2018. Over the course of Otto’s tenure, the Pioneers have amassed a 53-24 record, including four consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference regular season and conference tournament championships. Otto has helped chisel a nationally-prominent defense which ranked in the top-five nationwide from 2015-2017 in both scoring defense and clearing percentage. With Otto’s influence, the Pioneers most recently produced 11 All-ORLC award winners, including the Defensive MVP for the conference and an IWLCA All-Region Honorable Mention winner in TJ Toivonen, who ranked fourth this past season nationally in caused turnovers. The previous season, Otto was instrumental in yielding nine All-ORLC award winners, including the Offensive and Defensive MVPs for the conference. As Transylvania’s head assistant, Otto provides a wealth of knowledge to the budding men’s lacrosse powerhouse in central Kentucky. In addition to his coaching experience at Transylvania, Otto has been active in the development of men’s lacrosse scene in Lexington and surrounding areas. In addition to his duties at Transylvania, Otto spearheads and directs an assortment of camps and clinics throughout the year, including the annual Commonwealth Lacrosse Classic.
Prior to his current post at Transylvania, Otto served as an assistant coach at Lexington Catholic High School, aiding their varsity and junior varsity teams while helping lead the Knights to their first KLA Championship in 2014. Otto served as a liaison for the lacrosse team at Lexington Catholic, overseeing the team budget and monitoring academic affairs.

Logan Otto enters his sixth year with the Transylvania men’s lacrosse team for the 2019 season. Joining the Pioneers coaching staff in the early years of the program’s inception, the men’s lacrosse team has encountered consistent postseason success with Otto as its top assistant.

In recognition of his contributions to the game in Kentucky, Justice was part of an inaugural five-person class inducted into the Kentucky Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2015.
While his accolades are plentiful and his presence in Kentucky lacrosse is indelible, Justice’s motivations still return to the core elements of teaching, coaching, his players, and the school he represents. “This University is important to me and our culture,” espouses Justice. “My measure is not necessarily going to be only wins and losses, though young men these student-athletes are going to become. Did they graduate from this University? Are they successful when they get out of this University? That’s how I’m going to be truly measured, so working with these young men is what keeps me going, and that’s the fun part, to fight through some hard times together and learn life lessons.”

Previously, Otto served as head coach of Scott County (Ky.) High School, where he helped start the lacrosse program while overseeing scheduling and season planning. Otto has also served as Co-Director of Commonwealth Kings Lacrosse since 2011, a program which has produced players contributing for teams at NCAA Division I, II, and III levels. In addition to his work with local programs, Otto is also a certified trainer in the US Lacrosse Coaches Education Program, endeavoring to grow the game across the country as a Level 1 and 2 certified coach. Otto attended Columbia Hickman (Mo.) High School where he was a first team all-state performer in Boy’s lacrosse before to transferring to Lexington Catholic High School his sophomore season. At Lexington Catholic, Otto was all-state performer for three years and was named a US Lacrosse High School AllAmerican while holding multiple career point scoring records. He holds a master’s degree from Morehead State University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky.
