In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.
LIBBY COLE ASST. ATHLETIC TRAINER
Libby Cole begins her third year with the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2016-17 after two years at Division I Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. At Wright State, Cole worked as a graduate assistant and certified athletic trainer. She received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Miami (Ohio) University before earning a masters degree in physical education and sports management from Wright State.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.
Nick Reuss begins his sixth year with the Transylvania sports medcine staff and his first as the Director of Sports Medicine for the 2016-17 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.

NICK REUSS DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE
Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings over seven years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.

Pioneers Coaching Staff
Zack Getsee Head Coach
Zack Getsee enters his first season as Transylvania baseball head coach in the fall of 2016.
III College World Series, and in the process, became the first school out of the state of Missouri to ever win a game at the D-III World Series. Serving in roles of both catching coach and hitting coach, Getsee has coached five ABCA Rawlings All-Americans. Webster also had success off the field as Getsee helped engineer an academic study system that resulted in a team of 35 players achieving a cumulative grade-point average of better than 3.0.
Getsee arrives to Lexington after spending the last five years as the head assistant coach at Division In addition to his works at Webster, Getsee spent the summer of 2016 as head coach of the Quincy III Webster University in Gems of the Central Illinois Collegiate League. St. Louis, Missouri. During Getsee’s tenure as assistant coach at Webster, the Gorloks amassed an overall record of 171-61 (.737). Playing in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Webster captured five regular season titles, advancing to the Division III College World Series in three of those runs. While at Webster, Getsee had an integral role in an offense which finished in the top-10 nationally in stolen bases in three of his final four seasons in St. Louis; in 2015 and 2016 the Gorloks ranked in the top-10 nationally in doubles and home runs. Serving as the top assistant under Bill Kurich at Webster, Getsee was part of a staff that guided the Gorloks to a school record for most wins with 37 in both 2013 and 2014.
Getsee has participated as a camp instructor at DeMarini Top 96 camps in Kentucky, Indiana, Colorado, Kansas, and Alabama. He has also participated in The Complete Showcase, a premier prospect camp for college coaches. As a player, Getsee was a two-year starter at Southwestern Illinois College in Indiana, where he served as a team captain during that span. Getsee completed his collegiate playing career at NCAA Division II Saint Joseph’s College, playing for head coach Rick O’Dette; Getsee also served as team captain for two years at Saint Joseph’s, and was named to the 2011 Preseason All-American Watch List. Following his graduation from Saint Joseph’s College in 2011, Getsee played a season of professional baseball for the Lake County Fielders of the North American League.
The Gorloks finished the 2014 regular season ranked #1 overall in the D3Baseball.com poll, and #2 nation- Getsee maintains a professional membership with the American Baseball Coaches Association and ally in the ABCA coaches’ poll. In 2012 and 2013, Webster recorded fifth-place finishes at the Division has been a member since 2011. 10

Bray came to Transylvania by way of Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., where he served as an assistant coach under Tom Flynn for four seasons.
Heesch, a 2013 graduate of NAIA Division I University of South Carolina Beaufort, brings a well-crafted pitching perspective to the Pioneers in Zack Getsee’s staff. A career pitcher, Heesch currently belongs to the St. Louis Cardinals organization as a professional baseball player.

Jim Bray
Assistant Coach
Bray was a two-year letterwinner and captain for the Lewis & Clark baseball program, driving in 40 career RBIs and hitting 10 home runs. He started 57 games for the Pioneers, playing mainly as a corner infielder. Prior to Lewis & Clark, Bray spent two seasons playing wood bat baseball at Clackamas Community College. Bray split time at the infield positions before finding a home at first base during his second year in the program. In his sophomore year, Bray was named Second-Team NWAACC All-South Region first baseman, batting .280 with a perfect fielding percentage. He was also recognized for his academics, being named to the NWAAC All- Academic team while graduating with an Associate of Arts degree.
Assistant Coach
After being drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the eighth round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft, Heesch was elevated to Advanced-A level Myrtle Beach. In late 2015, Heesch was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Rule 5 draft and assigned to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. Heesch has served as a baseball coach at USC-Beaufort extensively with the pitching staff, working one-on-one with pitchers to enhance their performance, organizing and conducting daily workouts for the team, and overseeing conditioning operations. The Chicago, Illinois native also coaches individuals and has coached at a variety of camps over the years, including the Gastonia Grizzlies Summer Camp, the University of IllinoisChicago Baseball Camp of Excellence, and the Crystal Lake Cardinals Summer Baseball Camp.

During his time at Lewis & Clark, Bray was a recruiter, infielders coach, third base coach and a hitting coach for the baseball team. His work with infielders in 2014 led to a reduction in errors by nearly a third of the previous year’s total, and a 45% increase in double plays from the previous season. As a recruiter, Bray helped bring in two recruiting classes, which entailed 20 players from nine different states.
