WELCOME TO

President Seamus Carey

As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.

Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.

Taylor Throckmorton

Pioneers Coaching Staff

Throckmorton, 27, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, comes to the Pioneers from North Central University in Naperville, Illinois, where he spent the last two years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the track and field team. “We feel extremely lucky to welcome Taylor as our Head Coach for Cross Country and Track & Field,” says Vice President for Enrollment and Student Life, Dr. Holly Sheilley. “His passion and drive were vital in us deciding that he was the right fit to continue to build a championship program. Taylor has been a part of very successful programs and knows what we need to do to continue to move in that direction.” Throckmorton brings four years of coaching experience to the Transylvania track and field and cross country, including immediate experience from a program that has collected 11 Division III men’s track and field team national championships and 16 women’s individual and relay national championships. During his tenure at North Central, Throckmorton was instrumental in working with four athletes who qualified for nationals. A significant part of Throckmorton’s assistant duties at North Central entailed managing recruiting operations for the program, which carried a roster of 143 total athletes last season. Prior to his time at North Central, Throckmorton served as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at his alma mater, Division III Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Throckmorton cultivated new successes for the Allegheny program, guiding athletes to

10

four new school records and two conference records. In the cross country realm, Throckmorton led the women’s cross country team to a fourth-place regional finish, its highest finish in eight years. Throckmorton holds a Level I Coaching Certification with the USTFCCCA, along with certifications in USTFCCCA Strength and Conditioning, and Sports Science for Speed and Power Events. The Allegheny graduate also provides a wealth of administrative experience as he joins Transylvania; Throckmorton was part of a North Central Staff that hosted the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and served as the meet director for the Chicagoland Throws Series. While at Allegheny, Throckmorton oversaw many community outreach initiatives between the track and field and cross country programs and the Meadville community. Throckmorton adds championship perspective as a standout former Division III student-athlete, serving as a team captain at Allegheny for three years from 2009 through 2012. His collegiate career crested with a 2011 NCAA national championship in the distance medley relay. In his final season as a collegiate athlete, Throckmorton was selected as the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference indoor track MVP for sprints and hurdles. He now hopes to re-create those experiences for his next program. “Transylvania is one of the very few elite liberal arts institutions in the country that is located in a vibrant, fun city,” added Throckmorton. “Combined with the school’s amazing faculty, staff, and campus, there is limitless potential here to be competitive on a conference and national level.”

During her collegiate career, Gale competed for NCAA Division I Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, competing at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 800-meter run. She is also the current 3200-meter relay record-holder at Ohio University.

Gale, who has quickly crafted a diverse coaching resume at multiple levels, joins Taylor Throckmorton’s new staff as she works with both Transylvania programs.

As an assistant, some of Gale’s key duties are to develop training plans, meet preparation, and oversee administrative duties for both the cross country and track and field teams. Gale specializes in coaching mid-distance and distance events with the track and field program. Gale also holds a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification.

NCAA DIVISION III

“Here at Transylvania, we are trying to build athletic programs that not only compete at the championship level, but also produce model citizens,” says Throckmorton. “In that vein, Erin is both an expert and leader in that field whose passion and values will be a huge asset to our program, department, and school.”

LEXINGTON, KY

Erin Gale joins the Transylvania cross country and track and field teams as an assistant coach for the 20172018 year.

Gale comes to Transylvania from Louisville, Kentucky, where she most recently served as an assistant coach with the University of Louisville’s cross country and track and field teams. In this capacity, Gale worked directly with U of L’s coaching staff, assisting with recruiting initiatives, the operations team, and specialized in compliance and academics. Prior to her time with the Cardinals, Gale served as the head track and field and cross country coach at Brescia University in Owensboro, Kentucky. Her recruiting efforts for the 2015-16 year more than doubled her roster size for the upcoming season. From 2013 through 2015, Gale was a Graduate Assistant coach at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, where she coached numerous All-Academic and NAIA All-American athletes. Gale obtained a Master of Education from William Woods in Athletics/Activities Administration in 2015.
