In fact, 42 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 38 Heartland Conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 41 Coach of the Year awards and 46 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Athletics Mission Statement
The Transylvania intercollegiate athletics program is integral to the university’s educational mission and operates under the principles of amateur athletics and fair play, as established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. The Department of Athletics provides equitable opportunities and support for male and female students to participate in intercollegiate athletics and to compete successfully in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, Ohio Athletic Conference, Ohio River Lacrosse Conference and Southern Athletics Association. All activities hold paramount the academic, personal and physical welfare of the student-athlete and emphasize physical fitness, self-discipline, teamwork, leadership and the highest standards of ethics, sportsmanship and personal performance. Transylvania University is in the heart of downtown Lexington, a city with all the excitement and entertainment of a
bustling metropolis while maintaining a small-town feel. Transylvania has enjoyed more than a decade of success since joining the NCAA Division III in 2004. The athletics community has excelled both on and off the field, with student-athletes thriving in the classroom and in competition.

Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its studentathletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.
Nick Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.
Alaina White is in her tenth season as a member of the athletic training staff. She served five years as an assistant trainer before being named the head trainer in 2011. White holds a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University and a Master of Science in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky University. White has a special interest in soft tissue mobilization and hands-on rehabilitation, holding a certification in Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization.

Libby Cole begins her second year with the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2015-16 after two years at Division I Wight State University in Dayton, Ohio. At Wright State, Cole worked as a graduate assistant and certified athletic trainer. She received her Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Miami (Ohio) University before earning a master’s degree in physical education and sports management from Wright State in 2014.

Pinkerton Heidi Pinkerton, a former team captain at North Carolina-Greensboro and head cross country coach for Guilford College, was named head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach at Transylvania in 2011.

“Each season I have coached at Transy both cross country and the track team have improved tremendously,” Pinkerton said. “I look forward to continuing to improve this program to become one of the top teams in the conference and have some appearances at the national level.” During the 2014 track season, Transylvania earned conference titles in the women’s 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. Erin Marek earned conference champion in the 400m dash with teammate Kate Cohron earning runner-up. Jordin Fender earned runner-up in the 100m hurdles. On the men’s team, Cole Green was named the indoor conference Freshman of the Year. Both teams had several top eight performances at the conference meet. In the 2011 cross country season, Betsy Heines earned all-conference honors by finishing fifth at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
(HCAC) Championships. During the 2012 track season, Lucy Wright earned conference champion in the women’s shotput. Betsy Heines was the runner-up in the women’s 10k and Nicole Coffman was the women’s 400m dash runner-up. Prior to Transylvania, Pinkerton was the head cross country coach and assistant track coach at Guilford College from 2008-11. During her tenure, she coached a pair of Division III All-South Region performers in 2009-10 and helped the men’s cross country team to a second place conference showing in 2010. She was also an instructor in weight lifting at Guilford College, while holding a number of administrative positions. Pinkerton ran both cross country and track as she pursed a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina-Greensboro. She was a team captain for both sports and finished third in the Southern Conference Cross Country Championships in 2004. She was also an All-Southern Conference pick in 2003 and 2004. During her career, she set the school record in the steeplechase. Pinkerton earned her master’s degree in coaching education from Ohio University in 2013. She has a USATF Level I Coaching license and is CPR and AED certified as well as a Certified Endurance Event Specialist as awarded by the Track and Field Academy. Pinkerton lives in Lexington with her husband, Norman.

Hester
Jakob W. Hester joined the Transylvania Cross Country and Track and Field coaching staff prior to the 2012-13 season. He is coach of the sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers, and assists with cross country as well.

In just his second year, Hester helped take the track and field team to unprecedented heights. The 2014 season saw its first HCAC outdoor running event champions in school history with victories in the women’s 4x100m relay, women’s 4x400m relay, and women’s 400m dash. Other honors in the 2014 season for the Pioneer sprinters and hurdlers included an HCAC Male Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year award and two HCAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honors, each of which were also program firsts for both the men’s and the women’s teams, respectively. The women’s team also earned their highest point total and team ranking in program history at the 2014 HCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Prior to arriving at Transylvania, Hester spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Lexington’s Paul L. Dunbar High School, where he coached the jumping events, co-coached the sprinting events, and assisted with cross country. During that time he helped coach the girls’ track team to four straight Top 5 finishes at the KHSAA 3A State Championships, including a runner-up performance in 2009. Also over those four seasons, he had 12 jumpers place at the State Meet, six of which were Top 3 performances. Hester graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Kentucky in 2011 with degrees in Kinesiology and Health Promotion. He has been a USA Track and Field (USATF) Certified Official since 2008 and in 2013 received his USATF Level 1 Coach certification. Hester also earned a Track 11
