In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings over eight years of experience in athletic training to Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15.
Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University
in 2006.
CHRISTA HENDLEY ASST. ATHLETIC TRAINER Christa Hendley joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in November 2017. Hendley carries over five years of experience in the athletic training realm to Transylvania.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.
Prior to her time at Transy, Hendley served as the Head Athletic Trainer at the University of the Cumberlands from 2014 through 2017, overseeing men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, cheerleading, softball, track and field, and dance during her tenure at Cumberlands. Previous stints for Hendley include working at Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics as a Head Athletic Trainer and at Chowan University.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.
Nick Reuss begins his seventh year with the Transylvania sports medicine staff and his second as Head Athletic Trainer for the 2017-18 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

Pioneers Coaching Staff
HEAD COACH Brian Lane is entering his 17th season as the Transylvania University men’s basketball head coach.

Brian Lane
Lane has established Transylvania as one of the top programs in the country since arriving on campus. The Lexington native returned to his alma mater in 2001, following a 10-year stint as an assistant coach for teams at the NCAA Division I level. Lane is the only coach in conference history to win HCAC Coach of the Year four times since taking over at Transylvania. He was also named the Midwest Region Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Glenn Robinson NCAA National Coach of the Year award in 2012. Lane has led the Pioneers to 20 or more wins four times and qualified for the NCAA National Tournament five times. In 2005, Lane led the Pioneers to best postseason finish in school history, as the Pioneers reached the NCAA Elite 8 round. Prior to coming back to his alma mater, Lane was an assistant at Morehead State. He also served in similar roles at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Carolina State and South Carolina. Lane also served as an assistant at Transylvania under his college coach and father Don Lane in 1990-91 while completing his Masters of Arts in Education at Eastern Kentucky University. Since becoming fully eligible for NCAA postseason play in 2004, Lane has compiled a 195-81 (.706) record overall and an impressive 119-49 (.708) record in HCAC play. Transylvania has won four regular season championships and three HCAC Tournament titles in the past nine years. Lane became just the second coach in Transylvania men’s basketball program history to reach the 250-win mark on January 4, 2017 in an 86-62 victory over Earlham. Lane reached the 200th career win mark on January 2nd, 2013 against Franklin College. Lane is the fastest coach to 200 wins in Transylvania history. Since his arrival, the Pioneers have twice produced the HCAC Player of the Year, 17 All-HCAC selections, one HCAC Freshman of the Year, two NABC All-Americans and eight 1000-point club members. Lane’s Pioneers made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13, earning its second consecutive at-large bid after posting a 20-7 regular season record. Transylvania defeated four nationally ranked opponents, ascending to a national ranking of 16th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. At the conclusion of that season, Ethan Spurlin became the first Pioneer to be invited to participate in the NCAA Division III Reese’s All-star Game during the Final Four championship weekend in Virginia.

Transylvania had a record-breaking season in 2011-12, which included a 23-5 mark in which the Pioneers spent eight weeks in the Top 25. The Pioneers posted a 14-2 record in conference play, winning the league’s regular season title by four games. Transy tied a school record for the best start in program history, beginning its season with an 11-0 mark. The youthful Pioneers won 18 of 27 games in 2010-11, finishing fourth in the HCAC race. Transy advanced to the semifinal round of the HCAC tourney. Transy’s record in 2009-10 was 14-12 overall, 10-6 in HCAC play, earning a tie for fourth place in the league standings and another HCAC Tournament berth. In 2008-09, Transy posted a record of 21-6, winning 20 or more games in a season for the third time during Lane’s tenure. The Pioneers won their third HCAC championships with a mark of 13-3, their second-best conference record under Lane. Transy advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in his eight seasons, earning Lane his third HCAC Coach of the Year selection. The Pioneers were 16-11 in 2007-08, finishing second in the HCAC regular season race with a mark of 10-6, giving Transy its sixth straight season of a third place or better conference showing. Transy was 19-9 in 2006-07, finishing second in the regular season race and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. It was the second year in a row the tournament included Lane’s Pioneers. Overall, Transy has participated in 11 NCAA tournaments in the program’s history. In 2005-06, Transy tied a school record by winning 27 games, finishing 27-5 overall and 12-2 in HCAC play. That was good enough for a second successive HCAC regular season crown and when the Pioneers went on to win the HCAC tournament for the first time, the program had its first berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament since joining the NCAA ranks in 2001-02. Transy advanced all the way to the Elite Eight and was voted seventh in the final D3hoops.com national poll, its highest finish ever. For his efforts, Lane was named HCAC Coach of the Year for the second year in a row in 2005-06 and Midwest Region Co-Coach of the Year. In 2004-05, Transy tied Hanover for its first HCAC regular season championship with an 11-3 record as it finished 20-6 overall. During the season, Transy was nationally ranked for the first time since becoming an active member of the NCAA’s Division III. That performance earned Lane his first All-HCAC Coach of the Year honor.
Pioneers Coaching Staff In 2002-03, Transy rebounded from its first losing season in 21 years to post a 13-11 mark, including a 6-8 mark conference play, finishing fifth. Lane played at Transy from 1986-90, scoring 1,286 points. During his four years, he received numerous awards, including Pioneer Athlete of the Year in 1990. He was a three-year starter at guard, a co-captain, and an NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Transylvania posted an 85-33 record during Brian Lane’s four years as a player, including a 26-4 mark during his sophomore year that included an appearance in the NAIA national tournament when the Pioneers advanced to the Sweet 16. Lane graduated from Transylvania with a degree in business management in 1990 and received his master’s degree in education from Eastern Kentucky in 1991. After coaching at Transy for one year, he moved to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he was an assistant for a 23-9 team that won a Metro Conference championship. Lane coached at South Carolina from 1992-93 and at North Carolina State from 1993-95. He spent four seasons at Florida Atlantic (1995-99) before joining the staff at Morehead State in July 1999 under NBA great Kyle Macy, who has now joined him at Transylvania as an assistant coach.

Wright’s appointment as Transylvania men’s basketball assistant coach marks a homecoming to the state of Kentucky for a legend at the high school ranks, who most recently brings collegiate coaching experience to Don Lane Court.

In 2003-04, Transy finished third in the HCAC with a 9-5 record. The Pioneers were 16-10 overall and qualified for the NAIA Independent’s Tournament, where they lost to top-ranked Mountain State in the school’s final NAIA post-season appearance.
A native of Florence, Kentucky, Wright provides a wealth of coaching experience in his newest role at Transylvania. After compiling a record of 697-247 over 38 years at the high school level in Kentucky, Wright spent the 2016-17 season as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida under head coach Steve Ridder, another coach with Kentucky ties. “I am happy that we were able to lure Steve back to the Bluegrass State from Florida,” says Lane of Wright’s addition. “He is one of the most respected basketball coaches in Kentucky and his experience at Embry-Riddle certainly is a huge plus.” “What an honor and privilege it is to join the coaching staff at Transylvania University and work with Brian Lane to continue to build a great program in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference,” Wright says. Wright’s deep Kentucky roots originate in 1979 when he graduated from Northern Kentucky University and went on to coach at Walton-Verona High School in Walton, Kentucky. His appointment at Walton-Verona ignited a career of nearly four decades of high school coaching excellence in the Bluegrass, continuing at Laurel County High School, South Laurel High School, and Southwestern High School. At the time of his migration to Embry-Riddle, Wright ranked eighth all-time among Kentucky high school coaches on the career wins list, and carries a career winning percentage of .738. Of Wright’s plentiful achievements in the coaching realm, perhaps one that shines brightest over his storied career was when the development-oriented coach led South Laurel to a KHSAA State Championship in 2005. Wright’s other notable accolades include two state Final Four appearances, 15 district championships, nine regional championships, and two state AAU championships. Under Wright’s tutelage, 34 student-athletes have gone on to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level. at the highest level.” Wright returns to Kentucky with his wife Lisa, and his three children. He holds membership in the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Kyle Macy ASSISTANT COACH
Pioneers Coaching Staff
Kentucky basketball legend Kyle Macy returns for his second season on the Transylvania University men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2017-18 season. “I am thrilled that Kyle will be with us again this year,” says head coach Brian Lane. “His level of basketball expertise, especially in the areas of player development and scouting will certainly help our guys continue to get better every day. This position will work perfectly with Kyle’s broadcasting schedule which he will be able to continue.” Macy is most recognizable to those in Lexington as a standout guard for the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team from 1977 through 1980. As the starting point guard, Macy won a national championship with the Joe B. Hall-coached team in 1978. Macy completed a decorated college career by winning the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year award in 1980 and was named a consensus first-team All-American. Macy was a three-time AllAmerican and three-time All-SEC guard as a Wildcat.
Macy was drafted by the National Basketball Association’s Phoenix Suns with the 22nd overall pick in the 1979 draft and went on to play five years with Phoenix. After a one-year stop with the Chicago Bulls where he teamed up in the starting backcourt with Michael Jordan, Macy played with the Indiana Pacers before completing a professional career overseas in Italy’s Serie A League. Macy has been inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall-of-Fame, University of Kentucky Athletics Hall-of-Fame, and Kentucky Athletic Hall-of-Fame. Macy played high school basketball at Peru High School in Peru, Indiana and was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Indiana in 1975. After his storied playing career, Macy served as head coach of the Morehead State University men’s basketball team from 1997 through 2006. Macy’s best season with the Eagles was a first-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference in the 2002-2003 season. Following his nine-year tenure with Morehead State, Macy relocated with his family back to Lexington and began a successful broadcasting career as a color analyst for NCAA Basketball with ESPN, the SEC Network, and Westwood One Sports. Kyle and his wife Tina have three children: Malone (19), Meredith (21), and Mallory (25), and one grandchild, Jackson (1).
Bart Bellairs
Longtime coaching veteran Bart Bellairs joins the Transylvania men’s basketball coaching staff for the 2017-18 as an assistant coach.
ASSISTANT COACH
While Bellairs’s coaching profile contains a plethora of accomplishments to observe, his most notable tenure occurred as a head coach at NCAA Division I Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, where he coached from 1993 through 2005. VMI experienced its richest era while Bellairs led the men’s basketball program; Bellairs earned the Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1994, Sports Illustrated’s Unknown Coach of the Year award in 1996, and recruited and coached future NBA player Reggie Williams among other achievements. A storied and rugged rise through the assistant coaching ranks at various institutions preceded Bellairs’s arrival to VMI, including a two-year stint at the University of Maryland under coaching legend Lefty Driesell, and later at James Madison University where he again joined forces with Driesell to guide the Dukes to the NCAA Tournament in 1994. Bellairs’s leadership and administrative experience is equally as extensive against his coaching credentials; Bellairs has served as the athletic director at two Division I institutions, beginning with Savannah State University from 2008 through 2010, and Southeastern Louisiana University from 2010 until 2013. Each of Bellairs’s stops have displayed similar patterns of increased visibility for those respective athletic departments, strengthening of corporate partnerships, and creating tighter connections between each athletic program and its community. The Richmond, Kentucky native graduated from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina in 1979 with a Bachelor’s in Sociology/Social Work and later obtained a master’s degree from Western Illinois University in Physical Education and Athletics Administration.
