WELCOME TO

President Seamus Carey

As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.

Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.

Brian Lane

Pioneers Coaching Staff

HEAD COACH

Head Coach Brian Lane is in his 14th season as head men’s golf coach in 201718 and in his 18th year working with the Pioneers men’s golf program. The Brian Lane era has witnessed immense success and national prominence since becoming head coach in 2005. During his tenure, Transylvania has become one of the nation’s elite NCAA Division III men’s golf programs. Under Lane, the Pioneers won the first of 11 consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in 2007 while concurrently earning their first 11 berths in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournaments. Lane has earned 11 straight HCAC Coach of the Year awards during this ongoing run. After capturing the 2017 HCAC Championship, Transylvania became just one of four programs at the Division III level to maintain an active streak of ten consecutive trips to Nationals. The 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons were the most successful in the history of the program as the Pioneers notched back-to-back national runnerup finishes in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Pioneers entered 2013-14 as the preseason No. 1 ranked team. Lane has been a member of the six-person NCAA Division III golf committee in charge of organizing all aspects of the NCAA Tournament. 10

He was named Midwest Region Coach of the Year four consecutive years (2010-2013) and was a finalist for NCAA National Coach of the Year. Additionally Lane has served on the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-American Committee. Lane helped orchestrate the selection of Transylvania University as the host institution for the upcoming 2019 NCAA Divison III Men’s Golf National Championship at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The event will mark the first time an NCAA men’s golf championship event has been held in the state of Kentucky since 1993. Lane guided his club to three consecutive national top-10 finishes (2012-2014). Under Lane, 21 golfers have been named Cleveland Golf AllAcademic Scholars and 14 have earned PING Division III All-American honors, with Rob Canady becoming the latest Pioneer golfer to claim Srixon Academic All-American honors in 2017. Lane’s teams have been recognized for the GCAA Academic Excellence award each of the past eight seasons, one of only five teams in the country to achieve such a string of honors. Lane has had five players named Most Valuable Golfer in the HCAC. Since becoming head coach, he has had 40 golfers earn All-HCAC honors. Outside of his coaching duties at Transylvania, Lane is a member of the Bluegrass Sports Commission, which recently engineered the selection of hosting duties for the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship event to Lexington at Keene Trace Golf Club in the summer of 2018.
