WELCOME TO
President Seamus Carey
As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.
Seamus Carey President Transylvania University

Pioneers Coaching Staff
HEAD COACH
Transylvania alum Matt Vogel enters his fourth season at the helm of the program in the 2017 season.
LEXINGTON, KY
NCAA DIVISION III
Matt Vogel
The first three years of his tenure at his alma mater have allowed Vogel to make his own personal imprint upon the program, much in same way he did during his decorated playing days at Transylvania. The 2016 season was a culmination of a new foundation Vogel laid at Pat Deacon Stadium just three short years before and the results bore fruit in rapid time. In 2016 Transy had its best regular season in four years, finishing 12-3-3 and going 7-1-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. With a young and talented squad boosted by a backbone of a few key upperclassmen, the Pioneers became regionally ranked by the NSCAA for the first time in five years and finished 2nd in HCAC play, just short of another conference title. Ranked nationally in several offensive and defensive categories, the Pioneers went undefeated at home during the regular season and went their first seven games of the season without defeat. At season’s end, 10 Pioneers earned all-conference honors, including freshman Jason Murillo landing Freshman of the Year honors. Vogel’s guidance resulted in additional accolades, highlighted by sophomore center back Tyler Joy-Brandon being selected to the NSCAA Great Lakes All-Region Team. In his first season, Vogel led the Pioneers to a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title and fell just short of a NCAA tournament bid, falling in double overtime in the HCAC championship. Under Vogel, the Transy offense was the most potent in the conference, averaging 2.5 goals per contest and tallying 31 assists. The Pioneer defense was just as effective, limiting opponents to a mere 0.94 goals per contest.
10
The defensive unit recorded six shutouts, tying an HCAC record. Seven Pioneers earned all-conference honors following the 2014 season, including freshman Riley Calhoon landing Freshman of the Year honors. In his second season, the Pioneers compiled a 5-1-3 record in conference play, limiting opponents to 0.68 goals against average, which was ranked first in the conference. The Pioneers advanced to the HCAC tournament semi-finals while producing five all-conference players during the campaign. Vogel is a 2008 Transylvania graduate in exercise science and business administration and former Pioneer varsity student-athlete for three seasons. He received the prestigious 2008 Transylvania Male Athlete of the Year award, while also being a two-time All-American selection by NSCAA and D3Kicks.com, the 2007 Heartland conference Player of the Year, a three-time NSCAA AllGreat Lakes Region selection, a three-time All HCAC selection, a three-Time Transylvania Soccer MVP, and led the team to its first ever NCAA tournament “Sweet 16” appearance in 2007. He also earned a varsity letter in 2004 from the University of Kentucky. Vogel also excelled in the classroom while at Transylvania, maintaining an overall 3.7 GPA, receiving Dean’s list honors on three separate occasions. Using his knowledge and experience from his time at Transylvania, Vogel went on to earn a Master’s of Education in Health Promotion and Kinesiology (Exercise Physiology) with a perfect 4.0 GPA at the University of Kentucky in 2012. Vogel possesses a distinguished coaching resume. In his young coaching career, Matt has earned such honors as 2012 NSCAA Div. II KY State Coach of the Year, 2012 KHSAA High School Boys Small Schools Coach of the Year, 2011 Region II Boys Competitive Coach of the Year, and the 2011 Kentucky Boys Competitive Coach of the Year. He has earned these honors as the Head Coach at Mercer County High School, Head Coach at Lexington FC, and Staff Coach with the Kentucky Olympic Development Program. In addition, Vogel earned valuable knowledge as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Kentucky, overseeing several athletics teams during his time there.
ASSISTANT COACH
John Greer begins his fourth season as Transylvania assistant men’s soccer coach in the 2017 season under head coach Matt Vogel. Along with Vogel, Greer’s arrival to Transylvania has set the Pioneers men’s soccer program on course towards the top of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
During Transylvania’s 2016 season, Greer was part of a staff that saw 10 players receive All-HCAC postseason honors while defender Tyler Joy-Brandon was selected to the NSCAA All-Region Team for the Great Lakes region.
In addition to his duties at Transylvania, Greer devotes heavy involvement to coaching with Lexington FC, the premier youth soccer club in the Bluegrass. Before coming to Transylvania in the summer of 2014, Greer served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Alma College (Mich.), from 2012 through 2014. While at Alma, Greer helped the Scots to their first winning season since 2000 and led two of his players to All-MIAA honors. Greer has an established coaching career in Lexington serving as a head coach for the Commonwealth Soccer Club for five seasons. Prior to joining Alma, Greer spent the 2011-12 season as an assistant coach for the Lexington Christian Academy girls’ soccer program. Greer played collegiately at Asbury University where he was a four-year starter. Greer led the Eagles to their first KIAC conference championship in school history his sophomore season, the first of three consecutive conference titles. Greer earned All Mid-East Region selection for the NCCAA and was named captain during his senior year. Greer earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical and Health Education from Asbury. He holds a US Soccer National C Coaching License. Greer is married to his wife of six years, Casey, and they reside in Lexington.

A self-described players’ coach, Greer emphasizes a coaching style rooted in work ethic and showing good character at all times. “I coach because I want to help these young men become successful in their lives, on and off the field,” says Greer. “That’s why I do what I do.”
LEXINGTON, KY
As the assistant for the Pioneers, Greer specializes in player development, managing the developmental team and helping student-athletes acclimate to playing with the first team. Other key duties for Greer are facilitating training sessions, and managing team equipment.
