In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.

Libby Cole begins her third year with the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2016-17 after two years at Division I Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. At Wright State, Cole worked as a graduate assistant and certified athletic trainer. She received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Miami (Ohio) University before earning a masters degree in physical education and sports management from Wright State. in 2014

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.
Nick Reuss begins his sixth year with the Transylvania sports medicine staff and his first as Director of Sports Medicine for the 2016-17 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.

NICK REUSS DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE
Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings over seven years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.

Pioneers Coaching Staff
Heidi Pinkerton Head Coach The Heidi Pinkerton era has witnessed immense growth for both the Transylvania Track and Field and Cross Country programs. Pinkerton is in her sixth year as the Head Coach for Transylvania Track and Field and Cross Country. Over that period, Pinkerton has grown both squads into premier programs in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference while bringing each team into towards the national spotlight.
In producing the best student-athletes in the sprinting events, Pinkerton’s track and field squad also furnished the 2016 HCAC Track Athletes of the Year in Fender and Green as the two repeated as back-to-back award winners after winning 2015 HCAC Track Athlete of the Year honors. Fender’s 2016 season served as a defining moment for the progression of Pinkerton’s program. Following Fender’s four-title showing at the HCAC Outdoor Championships, the junior sprinter qualified for the NCAA Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where she went on to take fourth place in the 100 meter hurdles final, becoming the first All-American in Transylvania program history.

Pioneers Coaching Staff TRANSYLVANIA UNIVERSITY
Heidi Pinkerton Head Coach
As head coach of the Pioneers track and field and cross country programs, Pinkerton draws upon a diverse career as a collegiate athlete and coaching stops at the NCAA Division I level.
Pinkerton holds a master’s degree in coaching education from Ohio University, and a USATF Level I Coaching License. She is also a Certified Endurance Event Specialist as awarded by the Track and Field Academy. Pinkerton lives in Lexington with her Husband, Norman.

As a collegiate athlete, Pinkerton ran both cross country and track at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she was a team captain in both sports. Pinkerton finished third in the Southern Conference Cross Country Championships in 2004, and was an All-Southern Conference selection in 2003 and 2004. While at Greensboro, Pinkerton set the school record in the steeplechase.

Prior to Transylvania, Pinkerton was the head cross country coach and assistant track coach at Guilford College from 2008 to 2011. During her tenure, Pinkerton coached a pair of Division III All-South Region performers in 2009-10 and helped guide the men’s cross country team to a second-place conference showing in 2010. She was also an instructor in weightlifting at Guilford College, while holding a number of administrative positions.

Pioneers Coaching Staff
Max Coleman Assistant Coach
Max Coleman, most recently a two-year graduate assistant coach with Springfield College, joined Transylvania’s Track and Field and Cross Country Staff in June 2016. A high-jumper and long-jumper during his four years as a student-athlete at NCAA Division I High Point University in High Point, North Carolina, Coleman brings that personal expertise to the Pioneers along with two years of success at Springfield. As assistant coach with the Pioneers, Coleman’s duties will focus on sprints and hurdles, a department the Pioneers have enjoyed great success with in the past few years. A native of Trumbull, Connecticut, Coleman specialized in coaching sprints, jumps, and hurdles while obtaining a master’s Degree at Springfield. In his two years as an assistant at Springfield, Coleman helped develop two All-Americans; Coleman guided one student-athlete to a second-place showing in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships while coaching another to a seventh-place finish in the women’s 60m final at the Indoor Track and Field Championships (a school-record time in the event).

Christian Spaulding Assistant Coach Christian Spaulding joins the Transylvania track and field coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2017 season. Spaulding specializes in throws and jumps with the Transylvania track and field team, arriving to Lexington after recently completing a storied collegiate career at NCAA Division I High Point University. As a collegiate athlete, Spaulding competed in the javelin, discus, shot put, and the weight throw during indoor seasons, setting the standard in most of those events for High Point and Big South student-athletes. Spaulding won 11 different meets during his career in javelin toss, setting his college-best mark in the event during the 2016 season with a throw of 69.18 meters. The Middletown, New Jersey product won a collection of awards over his college career, including the Ecuadorian Sub-23 Javelin National Championship. Spaulding was a 2016 NCAA Division I All-American Honorable Mention, and a four-time All-Big South Conference award-winner. He holds the record at High Point in Weight Throw and Javelin Throw. After his 2011-2012 season, Spaulding was named the High Point University Athletics’ Freshman of the Year.
