WELCOME TO

President Seamus Carey

As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.

Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.

Brian Lane

Pioneers Coaching Staff

Lane has established Transylvania as one of the top programs in the country since arriving on campus. The Lexington native returned to his alma mater following a 10-year stint as an assistant coach for teams at the NCAA Division I level. Lane is the only coach in conference history to win HCAC Coach of the Year four times since taking over at Transylvania. He was also named the Midwest Region Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Glenn Robinson NCAA National Coach of the Year award in 2012. Lane has led the Pioneers to 20 or more wins four times and qualified for the NCAA National Tournament five times. In 2006, Lane led the Pioneers to their best postseason finish in school history, as the Pioneers reached the NCAA Elite 8 round. Prior to coming back to his alma mater, Lane was an assistant at Morehead State University. He also served in similar roles at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Carolina State and South Carolina. Lane also served as an assistant at Transylvania under his college coach and father Don Lane in 1990-91 while completing his Masters of Arts in Education at Eastern Kentucky University. 10

Since becoming fully eligible for NCAA post season play in 2004, Lane has compiled a 178-71 (.714) record overall and an impressive 107-39 (.732) record in HCAC play . Transylvania won four regular season championships and three HCAC Tournament titles in the past eight years. On January 2, 2013, Lane moved up to second on the school’s all-time win list, passing Hall of Fame coaches Lee Rose and C.M Newton. Lane reached the 200th career win mark on January 2nd, 2013 against Franklin College. Lane is the fastest coach to 200 wins in Transylvania history. Since his arrival, the Pioneers have twice produced the HCAC Player of the Year, 17 All-HCAC selections, one HCAC Freshman of the Year, two NABC All-Americans and eight 1,000-point club members. Lane’s Pioneers made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13, earning its second consecutive at-large bid after posting a 20-7 regular season record. Transylvania defeated four nationally ranked opponents, ascending to a national ranking of 16th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. At the conclusion of that season, Ethan Spurlin became the first Pioneer to be invited to participate in the NCAA Division III Reese’s All-Star Game during the Final Four championship weekend in Virginia. Transylvania had a record-breaking season in 201112, posting a 23-5 mark and spending eight weeks in the Top 25. The Pioneers posted a 14-2 record in conference play, winning the league’s regular season title by four games. Transy tied a school record for the best start in program history, beginning its season with an 11-0 mark. The youthful Pioneers won 18 of 27 games in 2010-11, finishing fourth in the HCAC race. Transy advanced to the semifinal round of the HCAC tourney.

Pioneers Coaching Staff

The Pioneers were 16-11 in 2007-08, finishing second in the HCAC regular season race with a mark of 10-6, giving Transy its sixth straight season of a third place or better conference showing.

In 2005-06, Transy tied a school record by winning 27 games, finishing 27-5 overall and 12-2 in HCAC play. That was good enough for a second consecutive HCAC regular season crown. When the Pioneers went on to win the HCAC tournament for the first time, the program had clinched its first berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament since joining the NCAA ranks in 2001-02. Transy advanced all the way to the Elite Eight and was voted seventh in the final D3hoops.com national poll, its highest finish ever. No previous Transy team had ever advanced past the second round of a national tournament. For his efforts, Lane was named HCAC Coach of the Year for the second year in a row in 2005-06 and Midwest Region Co-Coach of the Year.

In 2002-03, Transy rebounded from its first losing season in 21 years to post a 13-11 mark, including a 6-8 mark conference play, finishing fifth. Lane played at Transy from 1986-90, scoring 1,286 points. During his four years, he received numerous awards, including Pioneer Athlete of the Year in 1990. He was a three-year starter at guard, a co-captain, and an NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Transylvania posted an 85-33 record during Brian Lane’s four years as a player, including a 26-4 mark during his sophomore year that included an appearance in the NAIA national tournament when the Pioneers advanced to the Sweet 16. Lane graduated from Transylvania with a degree in business management in 1990 and received his master’s degree in education from Eastern Kentucky in 1991. Lane coached at South Carolina from 1992-93 and at North Carolina State from 1993-95. He spent four seasons at Florida Atlantic (1995-99) before joining the staff at Morehead State in July 1999 under NBA great Kyle Macy, who now is at Transy as an assistant coach. Lane and his wife, Andrea, have three children: Lydia, Harrison, and Henry. 11

NCAA DIVISION III

Transy was 19-9 in 2006-07, finishing second in the regular season race and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. It was the second year in a row the tournament included Lane’s Pioneers. Overall, Transy has participated in 11 NCAA tournaments in the program’s history.

In 2003-04, Transy finished third in the HCAC with a 9-5 record. The Pioneers were 16-10 overall and qualified for the NAIA Independent’s Tournament, where they lost to top-ranked Mountain State in the school’s final NAIA postseason appearance.

LEXINGTON, KY

In 2008-09, Transy posted a record of 21-6, winning 20 or more games in a season for the third time during Lane’s tenure. The Pioneers won their third HCAC championship with a mark of 13-3, their second-best conference record under Lane. Transy advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in his eight seasons, earning Lane his third HCAC Coach of the Year selection.

In 2004-05, Transy tied Hanover for its first HCAC regular season championship with an 11-3 record as it finished 20-6 overall. During the season, Transy was nationally ranked for the first time since becoming an active member of the NCAA’s Division III. That performance earned Lane his first All-HCAC Coach of the Year honor.

TRANSYLVANIA UNIVERSITY

Transy’s record in 2009-10 was 14-12 overall and 10-6 in HCAC play, earning a tie for fourth place in the league standings and another HCAC Tournament berth.

Pioneers Coaching Staff

Barrett Meyer Assistant Coach Barrett Meyer begins his fourth year with the Transylvania coaching staff and his third as an assistant coach under Brian Lane. Meyer joined the men’s basketball staff prior to the 2013-14 season and was named assistant coach in 2014. Meyer, a 2013 Transylvania graduate, was a four-year starter for the Pioneers from 2009-2013. During his time as a player, the Pioneers won a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title and recorded two NCAA Tournament appearances. During his playing career, Meyer was a three-time selection for HCAC All-Conference honors and was named 2009-10 HCAC Freshman of the Year. He finished his career with 1,328 points, listed 22nd on the all-time scoring list, and holds the HCAC record for the most 3-point field goals made in a single game (11). Justin Taylor begins his third year as an assistant coach at Transylvania. A former standout at nearby Georgetown College (Ky.), Taylor brings a wealth of global perspective to the Pioneers as part of Brian Lane’s staff. A 2008 graduate of Georgetown, Taylor played professionally overseas and with several semi-professional teams in the United States.

Justin Taylor

Assistant Coach

A local product of Tates Creek High School in Lexington, Taylor was a standout player in his high school days; Taylor is the second in all-time scoring at Tates Creek, and was twice an all-state selection, a three-time all-city selection, a 2004 all-11th region selection, the 43rd district MVP, and a McDonalds All-American nominee. Taylor’s collegiate career began at Tennessee Tech University before transferring back to the Bluegrass where he enjoyed a robust career at NAIA Division I Georgetown. In his two years at Georgetown, Taylor led the Tigers to two conference titles and an undefeated regular season his senior year. In that same season, Georgetown finished the regular season as the No. 1 team in the national poll and advanced to the Final Four before seeing its run come to an end. Taylor and Georgetown completed that season at 35-1. Prior to joining the Transylvania coaching staff, Taylor played professional overseas in Portgual, Canada, and in two world tournaments in Beijing, China. During his time in Beijing, Taylor played alongside Paul Pierce and Michael Beasley. In Taylor’s professional career, he earned all-star awards and newcomer of the year awards in several leagues, including the ABA, CBL, and CBA.

Pioneers Coaching Staff

“I have been a longtime fan of Transylvania basketball,” says Macy. “I am ecstatic that Coach Lane is allowing me the opportunity to join the program and coach the game I love, while also giving me the freedom to continue my broadcasting career.”

Kyle Macy Assistant Coach

Macy was drafted by the National Basketball Association’s Phoenix Suns with the 22nd overall pick in the 1979 draft, and went on to play five years with Phoenix. After a one-year stop with the Chicago Bulls where he teamed up in the starting backcourt with Michael Jordan, Macy played with the Indiana Pacers before completing a professional career overseas in Italy’s Serie A League. After his storied playing career, Macy served as head coach of the Morehead State University men’s basketball team from 1997 through 2006. Macy’s best season with the Eagles was a first-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference in the 2002-2003 season. Macy’s hire by Transylvania also marks a reunion between he and Lane; Transy’s Brian Lane was Macy’s assistant at Morehead State prior to being named head coach at his alma mater in 2001. Following his nine-year tenure with Morehead State, Macy relocated with his family back to Lexington and began a successful broadcasting career as a color analyst for NCAA Basketball with ESPN, the SEC Network and Westwood One Sports. A former Indiana high school tennis state champion, Macy also currently serves as the head coach of the Lexington Christian Academy tennis program.

13

NCAA DIVISION III

Macy completed a decorated college career by winning the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year award in 1980 and was named a consensus first-team All-American. Macy was a three-time All-American and threetime All-SEC guard as a Wildcat.

LEXINGTON, KY

Macy is most recognizable to those in Lexington as a standout guard for the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team from 1977 through 1980. As the starting point guard, Macy won a national championship with the Joe B. Hall-coached team in 1978.
