WELCOME TO
President Seamus Carey
As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.

Pioneers Coaching Staff
Kyle Walton Head Coach
Kyle Walton begins his fourth year as the head coach of the Transylvania volleyball program for the 2017 season. Walton has engineered a steady ascent for the Transylvania volleyball team upon taking over as head coach in the summer of 2014. Walton’s second year as head coach saw the Pioneers improve by five more wins than the season before. Bringing his largest class of 10 freshmen to 4th and Broadway in 2016, the Pioneers advanced to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for the seventh time in eight seasons. The quality of Walton’s talent was recognized as freshman setter Hannah Talkers was named the HCAC Freshman of the Year in 2016, and freshman Jordan Horne was selected to the All-NWC First Team. Under Walton’s guidance, three Pioneers received All-HCAC Postseason honors, with junior Marissa Coutinho receiving All-HCAC Honors. His young and upcoming roster boasts an array of versatility as his players ranked top-3 in conference for 2016 in digs, hitting percentage, assists, and service ace average. Walton’s second season at Transy produced new conference and program records by Erin Romito in 10
kills with 481 in the season, and 189 total kills in conference play in 2015. That season the Pioneers furnished four all-HCAC players in 2015 along with the HCAC Defensive MVP Audrey Brown. Before his appointment at Transylvania, Walton crafted his resume on the NCAA Division I coaching circuit, most recently at the University of Kentucky as the team’s assistant coach and technical director from 2012 through 2014. At UK, Walton was part of a staff that helped guide the Wildcats to a 22-11 overall record in 2012 and advanced to its second-straight Sweet 16 appearance, and eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament. Prior to his time in Lexington, Walton served as an assistant coach at Louisville. The Cardinals paved their way to the NCAA Tournament in 2011 with Walton serving as the recruiting coordinator. Walton spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Saint Louis University, helping guide the Billikens to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season crowns and NCAA Tournament appearances in his first two campaigns. Walton was an assistant coach at NCAA Division II University of Southern Indiana for one season before his stint at Southern Illinois. In addition to his volleyball head coaching duties, Walton assumed the role of Assistant Director of Athletics – Marketing in the summer of 2017. The Edon, Ohio native graduated from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, in 2005 with a degree in sports management.
