Year In Review
1. The Transylvania men’s soccer team earned its second consecutive HCAC Tournament Championship with a win at Hanover College on penalty kicks to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. 2. The Transylvania women’s basketball team produced its best season in program history with a 27-3 record. The Pioneers went 15-1 in HCAC regular season play on the way to winning the conference regular season and tournament titles before advancing all the way to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. 3. The Transylvania men’s golf team won its 13th straight HCAC Conference Crown in qualifying for its 13th consecutive NCAA Championship berth. Transylvania University hosted the D-III Men’s Golf National Championships in May 2019 at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. 4. The Transylvania women’s golf team won its second consecutive conference tournament championship in Fall 2018 behind HCAC Most Valuable Player Rachel Fine to clinch its second straight NCAA Tournament berth. The Pioneers tied their program best with a 15th-place finish at the National Championships 5. The Transylvania volleyball team, under first-year head coach Amy Barmore, won its first outright HCAC regular-season title with an 8-1 record. Junior Jordan Horne was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. 6. Senior Abby Blackburn of the Transylvania eventing team earned the USEA Intercollegiate Novice Champion title in becoming the top rider in the country at the Novice level, beating out all other university teams across Division I, II, and III college eventing. Blackburn was named the Pioneer Female Athlete of the Year at sesaon’s end. 7. Senior Graham Smith finished his career on a high note, becoming the first male All-American in Transylvania track and field history by finishing as the national runner-up in the men’s javelin at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. 8. The Transylvania softball team qualified for its third straight NCAA Tournament, a program record by winning the 2019 HCAC Softball Tournament. 9. The Transylvania women’s lacrosse team won the HCLC regular season and tournament championship for the second-consecutive year to clinch their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. 10. The Transylvania men’s lacrosse team won its fifth straight conference tournament championship to clinch its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK AWARD WINNERS IN 2018-19
Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.
KYLE SUTTON ASST. ATHLETIC TRAINER
Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings nine years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and William Grantham serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.
Nick Reuss begins his ninth year with the Transylvania sports medcine staff and his third as the Director of Sports Medicine for the 2019-20 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.

NICK REUSS DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE
Christa Hendley joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in November 2017. Hendley carries over five years of experience in the athletic training realm to Transylvania. Prior to her time at Transy, Hendley served as the Head Athletic Trainer at the University of the Cumberlands from 2014 through 2017, overseeing men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, cheerleading, softball, track and field, and dance during her tenure at Cumberlands. Previous stints for Hendley include working at Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics as a Head Athletic Trainer and at Chowan University.

Amy Barmore Head Coach
Year billing while three student-athletes from the 2018 squad earned All-HCAC First Team Honors. A native of Louisville, Barmore became the fourth Transylvania head coach in program history after spending four years as the lead assistant for a Transylvania volleyball team which increased its win total in each of those four seasons. In 2017, Barmore helped direct the Pioneers to their first 20-win season in four years while finishing second in the HCAC and making an appearance in the conference tournament semifinals.

In her first year as head coach, Barmore proceeded to lead the Transylvania volleyball team to its first appearance in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship match in six years. The Pioneers’ landmark 2018 season followed a regular season in which Transylvania marched through the HCAC on the way to an 8-1 record and its first-ever outright regular-season title. The Pioneers tested their mettle by facing off against seven teams ranked in the top 25, including the eventual national champions. The grueling gauntlet refined the Pioneers for their most successful run in program history through HCAC conference play. In Barmore’s first season as head coach, individual accolades complemented team success; junior outside hitter Jordan Horne became the second straight Pioneer to capture HCAC Offensive Player of the 10
her collegiate coaching career at her alma mater, Georgetown College (Ky.), a NAIA Division I school in Georgetown, Kentucky where she served as the volleyball assistant coach from 2012 through 2014. Her role at Georgetown involved duties as the recruiting coordinator and designing strength and conditioning programs. Barmore also served as a volleyball assistant coach at Tates Creek High School in Lexington and Scott County High School in Georgetown. Barmore competed collegiately at Georgetown College from 2006 through 2010 as the team’s starting libero, culminating in Georgetown finishing as the national runner-up during her senior season in which she received All-American Honorable Mention honors. She holds the Georgetown program records for digs and aces. Barmore was a three-time All-District and Second Team All-State player at Louisville Male High School.

Tyler Wills Assistant Coach
A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Wills joined Barmore as part of the Transylvania coaching staff in the summer of 2018.
Wills comes to Transylvania from NCAA Division III Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, where he spent the past season as an assistant coach for the Beavers women’s volleyball team. In his role at Buena Vista, Wills served as recruiting coordinator, spearheading scouting operations, and assisting with player development. During the 2017 season with Buena Vista, the Beavers went 22-10, finishing as the runner-up in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. Three players from his Buena Vista squad earned All-Conference honors in 2017. Prior to his tenure with Buena Vista, Wills spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Louisville’s volleyball team under head coach Anne Kordes. While at Louisville, Wills was part of a coaching staff that led the Cardinals to a 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, and produced ACC Player of the Year, Setter of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year honorees. During his first season at Louisville, the Cardinals went 24-7, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. During his time in Louisville, Wills additionally coached for KIVA (Kentucky Indiana Volleyball Association), coaching U-17 teams for two seasons. Under Wills, those teams placed third and second, respectively at the AAU National Tournament in 2016 and 2017. Before embarking upon his volleyball coaching career, Wills was a standout volleyball player at NAIA Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, becoming a four-time AVCA All-American, a four-time All-Conference First Team selection, and a two-time conference player of the year. In 2014, Wills led Clarke to a third-place finish at the NAIA National Tournament. 11

Pioneers Coaching Staff
Maddie Kunkel Volunteer Assistant Coach Maddie Kunkel joins the Transylvania volleyball program for her first season as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2019 season. Kunkel comes to Transylvania after recently completing a successful collegiate playing career at nearby NAIA Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky, where she was part of a team which advanced to the national tournament in each year she played and included a trip to the Elite 8 round. Since graduating from Georgetown, Kunkel has continued to develop her all-around coaching credentials. She has served as a volleyball coach for the Kentucky Ohana Volleyball Academy (KOVA) since December 2017.
Darby Bourdon Volunteer Assistant Coach Darby Bourdon is in her first year on the Transylvania coaching staff for the 2019 season as a Volunteer Assistant. A four-year player for the Transylvania volleyball team from 2015 through 2018, Bourdon brings a winning pedigree as she joins the Pioneers in a new role. Along with her collegiate playing perspective, Bourdon brings an assortment of coaching experience to the Pioneers. Since November 2015, Bourdon has served as a National Team Volleyball Coach with the local Lexington United Volleyball Club. In this role, Bourdon has managed and coached a competitive travel team for eight-month spans. 12
