WELCOME TO

President Seamus Carey

As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.

Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.

Seamus Carey President Transylvania University

Juli Fulks

Pioneers Coaching Staff

Fulks’s track record of leading and developing winning players and teams has spanned multiple stops, with the latest tradition of excellence blooming in Lexington with the women’s basketball program. In her first season in Lexington in 2014-15, Fulks took the Pioneers to new heights, guiding the team to its highest national ranking in school history at 13th. Fulks began her first season in Lexington with immediate momentum as Transy posted a record of 25-3 overall and a perfect 18-0 record in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, becoming the first undefeated team in HCAC regular season history. The 2014-15 edition of the Pioneers captured the regular season conference championship along with an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Pioneers produced two selections to the D3Hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region Second Team, senior guard Nicole Coffman and junior guard Katelyn Smith. Those two players were also named to the All-HCAC First Team as Smith captured the conference MVP award in 2015. In 2015-16, Fulks and the Pioneers completed another strong run through HCAC play, overcoming injuries to multiple key rotation players to capture third place with a 14-4 record and advancing to the conference tournament semifinals. Smith again repeated as the HCAC Conference MVP and a selection to the 2016 D3Hoops.com Great AllRegion Second Team, while senior guard Shawn Kolani was named to the All-HCAC First Team and freshman guard Kristen Hayes was named to the conference’s AllFreshman Team. Fulks surpassed the 200-career win mark on February 13, 2016 with a 75-67 win against Defiance. That season, the Pioneers led the conference in 3-pointers made per game and free-throw percentage, and ranked second in fieldgoal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage, assists per game, and turnovers per game. Transylvania ranked first in field-goal percentage during conference play.

10

2016-17 brought another exciting season as the Pioneers posted another 20-win season despite possessing a roster with zero seniors. The Pioneers forged through the 2016-17 season, overcoming the loss of four of five starters to graduation or injury to notch a third-place finish in HCAC play, advancing all the way to the conference tournament championship game. Junior Rachel Cox and sophomore Celia Kline were both named to the All-HCAC First Team, freshman Shelby Boyle was named to the HCAC All-Freshman team, and sophomore Kristin Hayes received All- Sportsmanship team honors. Fulks took over at Lewis & Clark prior to the 200405 season, inheriting a team which had posted a 1-15 conference record. In her first season at the helm, Fulks led her team to an 8-8 record in Northwest Conference play and a 12-12 overall mark for one of the 20 most-improved seasons in the nation. Under Fulks’s guidance, Lewis & Clark found their place atop the Top-25 USA Today rankings for three consecutive seasons from 2011 to 2013, ranking as high as fifth nationally in 2013 on the way to a 25-4 season. Following the 2011 season, Fulks was named NWC Coach of the Year while Lewis & Clark guard Kristina Williams earned NWC Player of the Year honors. Fulks’s Pioneer squad accumulated continued success, recording threestraight NCAA tournament appearances, three 20-win seasons, and two Northwest Conference Championships.
