In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.
Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.

Libby Cole begins her third year with the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2016-17 after two years at Division I Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. At Wright State, Cole worked as a graduate assistant and certified athletic trainer. She received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Miami (Ohio) University before earning a masters degree in physical education and sports management from Wright State.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and Trevor Wilkes serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.
Nick Reuss begins his sixth year with the Transylvania sports medcine staff and his first as the Director of Sports Medicine for the 2016-17 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.

NICK REUSS DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE
Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings over seven years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.

Pioneers Coaching Staff
Lauren Bickford Head Coach Lauren Bickford is in her third season at the helm of the Transylvania women’s lacrosse program. In her second season, the Pioneers experienced the winningest season in program history, going 13-4 overall and finishing in second place in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference with a record of 7-1. The Pioneers against clinched a postseason berth, advancing to the ORLC semifinals. Among other achievements in the 201516 season, Bickford has overseen the emergence of ORLC Player of the Year and two-time ORLC First Team All-Conference player Rachel Harrison, twotime ORLC First Team All-Conference player Julie Ward, and ORLC Second Team All-Conference and Newcomer of the Year player Emma Oliver. In 2015-16, the Pioneers improved from a fourthplace finish to a second-place finish, marking the Pioneers’ highest finish in ORLC conference regular season play. In her first season, Bickford guided the Pioneers to a 6-3 record in Ohio River Women’s Lacrosse Conference play, giving Transy the first postseason berth in program history. Bickford also serves as Co-Advisor to Transylvania Athletics’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Prior to joining Transylvania, Bickford spent four years as the head women’s lacrosse and tennis coach at Thomas College, an NCAA Division III institution located in Waterville, Maine. During her time with Thomas College, Bickford led the Terriers to back-to-back North Atlantic Conference lacrosse championship appearances in 2013 and 2014. In 2013 she was named NAC Coach of the Year after leading her lacrosse team to an 11-5 record and going 5-1 in conference play. In 2012 she was named NAC Coach of the Year after leading her tennis team to its first post season berth in program history. Both her lacrosse and tennis programs were recognized by the school as elite academic teams on campus, winning the President’s Council Academic Challenge in 2011 and 2012. She served as the women’s lacrosse representative for the NAC in the spring of 2013 and worked with the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee from 2012 until 2014. Prior to her coaching career, Bickford was a successful player at New England College and received her bachelor of arts in May 2010 with a double major in sport and recreation management and in business administration. Twice, she was named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference all-academic team (2008, 2009). She was named a captain for her senior season in 2010. While working as a coach, she also earned her MBA from Thomas College in May 2013.

Additionally, Vautier has served as a coach for the Chesapeake Club Lacrosse program in Annapolis for the past four years. “Katie shares the same vision and winning drive as our staff to bring Transylvania women’s lacrosse to the next level,” says Transylvania women’s lacrosse head coach Lauren Bickford of Vautier’s addition. Vautier completed a decorated career at Division III York College (Pa.) of the Capital Athletic Conference in 2013. During her four-year career with the Spartans, the former defender was a 2013 IWLCA second-team All-American, and was named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference First Team in her last three seasons with York.
Vautier brings a defensive pedigree to the program to help bolster a Pioneers team which led the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference in goalsagainst average in 2016 with 7.98 goals allowed per game. Over her playing career, Vautier led York during her final two years in ground balls and caused turnovers, and ranked second on the team in draw controls. She stands atop the York record books in career caused turnovers. The defender played a key part in York’s annual success as the Spartans were a top-20 ranked team for her final two years, culminating in the Spartans reaching the Sweet 2016 in her senior season. The former York standout attained her Master’s Degree in Forensic Science from Towson University in Maryland in the spring of 2016.

Katie Vautier joined the Women’s Lacrosse coaching staff in August 2016. Vautier comes to the Pioneers program from Annapolis, Maryland, where she most recently served as both an assistant coach at Annapolis High School and head Junior Varsity coach for the program.
