WELCOME TO
President Seamus Carey
As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.
Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.

Pioneers Coaching Staff
Lauren Bickford Head Coach Lauren Bickford enters her fourth season as head coach of the Transylvania women’s lacrosse team. During her tenure as the head coach of Transylvania, the Pioneers women’s lacrosse team has solidified a winning tradition. In each of her first three seasons, Transylvania has hit new levels of postseason success, reaching the semifinals of the Ohio River Women’s Lacrosse Conference Tournament in all three seasons. In each of the last two years, Transylvania has set a new record for overall wins. In the 2017 season, the Pioneers put together a 14-3 overall record along with an 8-1 record in the ORLC for their second straight top-two finish in conference. The 14 wins marked the second consecutive season in which the Pioneers set a new program standard for total wins. In the process, the Pioneers netted three players onto the All-ORLC First Team as attacker Julia Ward, midfielder Emma Oliver, and goalie Mackenzie Dent were all chosen. In all, seven players were recipients of All-ORLC honors in the 2017 season. The 2017 season was one marked by offensive proficiency as the Pioneers led the ORLC in total goals (280) and goals per game (16.47). 10
Transylvania’s most recent success followed in the footsteps of a 13-4 run through in 2016, culminating in another advancement to the ORLC semis. In 2016, the Pioneers improved from a fourth-place finish to a second-place finish, marking the Pioneers’ highest finish in ORLC regular season play. During 2016, Bickford oversaw the emergence of ORLC Player of the Year and two-time ORLC First Team All-Conference player Rachel Harrison, twotime ORLC First Team All-Conference player Julie Ward, and ORLC Second Team All-Conference and Newcomer of the Year player Emma Oliver. Prior to joining Transylvania, Bickford spent four years as the head women’s lacrosse and tennis coach at Thomas College, an NCAA Division III institution located in Waterville, Maine. During her time with Thomas College, Bickford led the Terriers to back-to-back North Atlantic Conference lacrosse championship appearances in 2013 and 2014. She was named the NAC Coach of the Year for Women’s Lacrosse in 2013 and Tennis in 2012. Prior to her coaching career, Bickford was a successful player at New England College and received her bachelor of arts in May 2010 with a double major in sport and recreation management and in business administration. In addition to her coaching duties at Transylvania, Bickford serves as a Co-Advisor to the Transylvania Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Pioneers Coaching Staff
Katie Vautier is in her second year as an assistant coach for the Transylvania women’s lacrosse team.
A defender during her playing days, Vautier has applied her winning philosophy to the Pioneers program. Vautier brought her experience to the defense and goalkeeping units, resulting in the Pioneers leading the ORLC in 2017 in goals-against average. With Vautier offering her expertise to the backline units, the Pioneers led the conference in clears and finished top-three in the ORLC in ground balls.
Before her coaching days, Vautier was an All-American athlete for NCAA Division III York College (Pa.) where she played four years for the Spartans. Vautier was a three-time All-Capital Athletic Conference First Team Selection and completed her career in 2013 as an IWLCA Second Team All-American while York advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. She graduated from York as the all-time leader in caused turnovers. Vautier attained her master’s degree in Forensic Science from Towson University in the spring of 2016.
Prior to her time in Lexington at Transylvania, Vautier served as an assistant coach at Annapolis High School in Annapolis, Maryland for the varsity program and also as the head coach of the junior varsity team.
