Year In Review

1. The Transylvania men’s soccer team earned its second consecutive HCAC Tournament Championship with a win at Hanover College on penalty kicks to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. 2. The Transylvania women’s basketball team produced its best season in program history with a 27-3 record. The Pioneers went 15-1 in HCAC regular season play on the way to winning the conference regular season and tournament titles before advancing all the way to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. 3. The Transylvania men’s golf team won its 13th straight HCAC Conference Crown in qualifying for its 13th consecutive NCAA Championship berth. Transylvania University hosted the D-III Men’s Golf National Championships in May 2019 at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. 4. The Transylvania women’s golf team won its second consecutive conference tournament championship in Fall 2018 behind HCAC Most Valuable Player Rachel Fine to clinch its second straight NCAA Tournament berth. The Pioneers tied their program best with a 15th-place finish at the National Championships 5. The Transylvania volleyball team, under first-year head coach Amy Barmore, won its first outright HCAC regular-season title with an 8-1 record. Junior Jordan Horne was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. 6. Senior Abby Blackburn of the Transylvania eventing team earned the USEA Intercollegiate Novice Champion title in becoming the top rider in the country at the Novice level, beating out all other university teams across Division I, II, and III college eventing. Blackburn was named the Pioneer Female Athlete of the Year at sesaon’s end. 7. Senior Graham Smith finished his career on a high note, becoming the first male All-American in Transylvania track and field history by finishing as the national runner-up in the men’s javelin at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. 8. The Transylvania softball team qualified for its third straight NCAA Tournament, a program record by winning the 2019 HCAC Softball Tournament. 9. The Transylvania women’s lacrosse team won the HCLC regular season and tournament championship for the second-consecutive year to clinch their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. 10. The Transylvania men’s lacrosse team won its fifth straight conference tournament championship to clinch its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.

Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.

KYLE SUTTON ASST. ATHLETIC TRAINER

Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings nine years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and William Grantham serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.

Nick Reuss begins his ninth year with the Transylvania sports medcine staff and his third as the Director of Sports Medicine for the 2019-20 season. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.

NICK REUSS DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE

Christa Hendley joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in November 2017. Hendley carries over six years of experience in the athletic training realm to Transylvania. Prior to her time at Transy, Hendley served as the Head Athletic Trainer at the University of the Cumberlands from 2014 through 2017, overseeing men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, cheerleading, softball, track and field, and dance during her tenure at Cumberlands. Previous stints for Hendley include working at Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics as a Head Athletic Trainer and at Chowan University.

Pioneers Coaching Staff

Farmer boasts over three decades worth of coaching experience across NCAA Division I, Division III and professional women’s soccer levels, 24 years as a head coach.

new women’s soccer program at Penn State University in 1994. Like Ithaca, Penn State enjoyed immediate success under Farmer as it went 14-4-1 in the 1994 season. One season later, Penn State advanced to the NCAA Tournament and the program won its first Big Ten championship in 1998. The 1999 campaign was a season to remember as the Nittany Lions made an NCAA National Semifinal appearance in 1999 and Farmer was named the NSCAA/Adidas Division I National Coach of the Year. In 2001, Farmer ascended to the realm of professional women’s soccer, becoming the head coach of the New York Power of the Women’s United Soccer Association. Following a two-year stint with the Power, Farmer served as head coach at Tennessee Tech and Syracuse, and later as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin.

After completing a successful five-year run as head coach of NCAA Division I Cornell University of the Ivy League in 2016, the Hall-of-Fame coach made his return to the pitch for Transylvania in the fall of 2018. In 24 years as a head coach at Ithaca, Penn State, Farmer’s teams have forged new milestones at each of Tennessee Tech, Syracuse, and Cornell, Farmer has his stops. amassed a 286-131-46 coaching record. Farmer’s holds an NSCAA Premier diploma, a Prelim badge from the England Football Association, and a United States Soccer Federation “A” license. His selection as head coach at Transylvania marks a return to the Division III level where his career has come full circle. The Pioneers’ pathway to success has again mirrored the genesis of Farmer’s past teams as Transylvania recorded a record of 13-5-2 in 2018, its highest amount of wins in five years.

Ashley Reinecke Assistant Coach

Reinecke brings a transcontinental coaching resume spanning multiple college and youth programs to Transylvania, where she joins a team coming off of a 13-5-2 season in 2018. A native of Toms River, New Jersey, Reinecke comes north to Lexington after serving as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia, where she was part of a staff which led the Lakers to three winning seasons and two postseason appearances during her three-year tenure. Along with her position at Clayton State which elapsed from 2014 through 2017, Reinecke has held leadership and coaching roles in the Triumph Youth Soccer Association of Tucker, Georgia where she served as an Academy Coach and Club Administrator.

Prior to her arrival in the Peach State, Reinecke cultivated her coaching career overseas. While playing professionally for five years for the Keynsham Town Ladies Football Club in Bristol, England, Reinecke served as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Bath under the tutelage of UEFA B Coach Louise Hutton from 2011 through the spring of 2013. During this timeline, Reinecke also was a youth coach with the Keynsham Town Football Club.

“I’m really pleased to have Ashley join our Transy women’s soccer staff,” says Transylvania women’s soccer head coach Patrick Farmer. “Ashley brings great energy, playing experience, and knowledge, and I believe she will have a major impact on our program, both on and off the field.”

Having worked in the organization since 2014, Reinecke earned the Georgia Soccer Select Coach of the Year Award in 2016.

Ashley Reinecke is in her first year as an assistant coach with the Transylvania women’s soccer team for the 2019 season.

Reinecke’s coaching and playing endeavors in England followed a playing career domestically from 2010 through 2012, during which she played for the New Jersey Wildcats of the United Soccer League’s W-League. A 2008 graduate of Division I Seton Hall University in Orange, New Jersey, Reinecke started as a midfielder for the Pirates and holds a master’s degree in Brand Design and a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations.

Reinecke holds a USSF E Coaching License.England Football Association, and a United States Soccer Federation “A” license.

Pioneers Coaching Staff

GOALKEEPER COACH Transylvania alum Matt Hadley enters his second year as goalkeeper coach for the Transylvania women’s soccer program in the 2019 season. As a former volunteer coach with Transylvania men’s soccer, Hadley assisted over a three-year span that saw the team reach national rankings and a conference championship before advancing to the NCAA tournament during their 2017 campaign. Hadley currently holds an NSCAA Goalkeeping Level 2 Diploma along with a USSF National D License while also serving as a Kentucky ODP staff coach and a head/ goalkeeping coach at Lexington FC.
