WELCOME TO

President Seamus Carey

As a former college athlete, I understand the value of participating in competitive athletics while pursuing a degree at an institution that embraces academic rigor. The things you learn about yourself and the principles of discipline, teamwork, commitment and resilience will gird you for a lifetime of challenges. You’ll also make lifelong friends and find valuable mentors among your coaches and the athletics staff. As a member of NCAA Division III, Transylvania is committed to the student-athlete ideal. In fact, 41 percent of our students participate in our 26 intercollegiate teams. We challenge our student-athletes to demonstrate high standards of character and achievement both in the classroom and on the field. Since Transylvania’s transition to the NCAA in 2001, the Pioneers have earned 48 conference championships, more than 30 NCAA tournament appearances, 47 Coach of the Year awards and 47 All-American athlete awards.

Transylvania occupies a unique and historic position in American higher education. Founded in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania was a pioneer in bringing the light of learning to what was then the nation’s frontier. Today, the university is a highly regarded liberal arts college with a reputation for the quality of our academics and the personal approach we bring to teaching and learning. With 40 majors and a number of pre-professional programs, Transylvania offers excellent preparation for graduate and professional school as well as a variety of careers immediately following graduation. Our athletic teams are called the Pioneers, and that’s not only a tribute to our honored past—it’s a way of thinking that pervades our vision of the future. Our liberal arts program emphasizes questioning and creative thinking, and that’s what leads to pioneering discoveries and notable contributions to society. Couple that with athletic competition and community spirit is amplified. We hope you’ll join us as we enthusiastically support our student-athletes—our Pioneers and the community’s future leaders.

Luis Reis

Pioneers Coaching Staff

HEAD COACH

Luis Reis, one of the winningest active coaches in Division III women’s soccer, arrives to Transylvania for his first season in 2017. Having spent the last 20 years of his coaching career lording over the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference with an annually extraordinary Lyons squad, Reis makes the big move to the Bluegrass aiming to bring his winning attitude to a Pioneers squad which has had a tradition of success. From 1997 through this past season, Reis guided his Wheaton squads to 357 wins and 30 draws against just 71 losses. Multiple editions of the Lyons experienced deep runs into the NCAA Postseason as Reis’s 2004 squad became his first team to reach the Final Four, capping off a string of three consecutive berths into the national quarterfinal round. Reis established a standard of excellence during his time in the NEWMAC as the Lyons qualified for the NCAA Tournament every season from 2000 through 2012. A native of Portugal who has made his home in the United States for now over 30 years, Reis has coupled his collegiate coaching experience with a collection of high-profile coaching endeavors in the New England region at multiple levels.

10

Reis was awarded the NSCAA New England Coach of the Year award after leading Wheaton to the Final Four in 2004; a year later, he served as the head coach of the Boston Renegades of the USL W-League which included USWMNT capholders Becky Sauerbrunn and Angela Hucles. In his time at Division III Wheaton, Reis pushed the Lyons to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven conference championships. Other noteworthy numbers as a result of Reis’s handiwork include 19 consecutive postseason tournament appearances, eight seasons of 20 wins or better, and the second-longest conference unbeaten streak in NCAA history, either men’s or women’s. That particular streak spanned nine seasons and 91 matches from 2000 through 2008. Reis earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from California State University at East Bay, formerly known as California State University at Hayward, in 1991. In his junior season, he helped lead the 1989 team to the NCAA Division II Tournament Final Four. Reis was captain of the 1990 team. In 1995, he went on to play one season of professional soccer with the Boston Storm of the United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL). Reis holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” Coaching License. Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Reis attended Taunton High School, where he held the all-time goal scoring record (42 goals in three varsity seasons) for 11 years. Reis and his wife, Paula, reside in Lexington with son Samuel and twins Daniel and Natalie.

ASSISTANT COACH

Silvia Vazquez enters her first season as Assistant Coach for the Transylvania women’s soccer team in August 2017.

Vazquez, a native of Redwood City, California, returns east after a standout career at NCAA Division II Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina from 2010 through 2014.

Vazquez served as both the head coach of the FORCE North Soccer Club in San Mateo, California and the head coach of the Sacred Heart Prep Girls JV Squad in Atherton, California. Prior to her head coaching stints with FORCE and Sacred Heart Prep, Vazquez spent a year as the head coach of the Juventus Soccer Club, a youth organization competing in US Club Soccer’s National Premier League and with the US Soccer Development Academy. Along with her coaching experience, Vazquez adds elite playing perspective in her role at Transylvania. In between her collegiate and coaching careers, Vazquez played two seasons of soccer in the Women’s Professional Soccer League, participating with the 2015 Olympic Force (Seattle, Washington), and FC Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Vazquez’s professional career followed a prolific collegiate career, notching NSCAA All-American honors as a senior in 2013 after leading her team to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Vazquez was twice named to both the All-Southeast Region Team and her conference’s first team and led her team to conference tournament championship appearances in all four of her years at Belmont Abbey. Primarily a defender during her playing days, Vazquez was named the 2013 Conference of Carolina Defensive Player of the Year.

11

After completing an All-American collegiate career, Vazquez returned to the Bay Area and has cultivated a diverse coaching resume.

“Silvia has a great work ethic and the desire to become successful,” says head coach Luis Reis. “She is driven and passionate about the game. She was a leader, a captain, and an All-American player in college. Her playing and coaching experience at the college, club, and high school level will benefit our program.”
