Green Green Screen
Klein Dytham
Green Green Screen is a live, growing construction screen 274 meters long, running almost the full length of Tokyo's version of the Champs Elysees in Omotesando. The screen will be up for 3 years while Tadao Ando's large mixeduse development is under architecture construction behind it. Vertical stripes in different widths made from 13 types of real evergreen plants alternate with graphic patterns with a green leaf theme. Rather than being reminded of the nuisance of a construction site passersby can enjoy the refreshing green as if walking in the park This project won the prestigious Best Environment Award in ID Magazine’s 2004 annual design competition.

About a month ago when we were thinking about where to have our annual cherry blossom party we got a call saying 'could you please design some furniture for an outdoor cherry blossom party' ? It was to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of the opening of Tokyo Mid-Town, a major mixed use development in Tokyo. One month architecture from design to production and the furniture needed to survive 2 weeks and cope with thousands of visitors. Initial reaction - not a chance - But they said we could invite 300 friends for the champagne launch. So the problem of where to hold our cherry blossom party was solved and the project a GO! Large cherry blossom benches float down on to the lawn. Simply sculpted from blocks of polystyrene the seats and tables are coated with a urethane surface which spreads the pressure and stops people in kimonos from puncturing the polystyrene with their chop sticks!

Japan is a country in love with mobile phones and the lifestyles they make possible. Tapping into this demand for anytimeanywhere interactivity this temporary hoarding was built in Harajuku the heart of Tokyo's youth fashion zone. Virgin Atlantic Airways asked us to develop an innovative visability campaign for them. architecture iFly Virgin Wonderwall was a 20meter-long LED ticker-tape display set into a wall of bright red acrylic. One general knowledge question appeared on the wall each hour of each day. Passers by with web enabled i-mode phones could answer the quiz by connecting to the campaign website. At the end of each hour entrants telephones automatically received an e-mail notifying them if they had answered the question correctly, and whether or not they had won a prize. This was the first time mobile phone technology had been used any where in the world in such an interactive way with a large scale outdoor advertisement.
