PUDU URBAN COMMUNITY CENTRE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The urban Community centre is located adjacent to the south of open market district. Designated specifically for the needs of the homeless, elder generation, residents, would move to general assistance shelters (halfway homes) to live there for up to 12 months. The community centre’s purpose is three fold: to initiate the essence of community spirit, to help the children be introduced to educational activities, and to provide a stable, safe environment necessary for the homeless to reassemble themselves.

The programme of the community centre is to encourage the community to gather as a social club for all ages who share common interests and hobbies to come together in organizing classes and activities. These spaces are introduced as a learning centre which consists of art courses, crafting making, embroidery classes, and calligraphy workshops. There is also a polyclinic and wellness centre that caters to the elderly and sick.

This purpose can best be achieved when the city’s institutionally provided social services are supplemented with the self-help that comes of a mutual supportive social environment amongst the shelter’s residents. The residential spaces housing a total of 10 residents-enclosed and are connected by a central outdoor dining space. The community centre’s compact form also allows efficient provision of services and security. Opportunity for interactions are continued inside the community centre’s skylit central corridor connecting to its primary functions. The community centre is mainly separated into a main open air amphitheatre and an enclosed building space. The amphitheatre is celebrated in a continuation of the Jalan Sayur street flow as a destination receiving and embracing the existing tree. This is where performances and activities can be held amongst the green space.

LOCATION PLAN

SITE PLAN

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The site is divided into 2 sections. The open air court and the closed building space.

The existing tree position balances the positive and negative spaces. The central core is risen up.

The right core is risen to embrace the inner and exterior courts to extend the views.

The rear side of the right core is extruded to the height of the central core.

The extruded core is cut off from the main core and decreased into a single floor horizontal space.

The core is then extruded horizontally to the other end of the site.

The core is then extruded horizontally to the other end of the site.

The extruded core is landed like a balancing scale on the central core. The cut -off land is filled back into the right site.

A small courtyard is made on the landing of the central core.

The building space on top of the open air theatre has an extension of an additional floor

Circular steel columns are added as supporting structures and to embrace the floating effect and weight balancing.

The main entrance of the building is extruded into the space next to the central core.

Materials are chosen from dark to lighter shades from bottom to top.

Roof is added for both sides of the building leaving the residential core a clean white roof.

PHYSICAL MODEL

Based on a simple design concept of a hut shape transformation, this retreat house designed with the main intention of providing a comfortable space for vacation and relax purposes. The designated site is located at the south side of the waterfall site plan. These are some of the first few design sketches, concepts and inspirations of the retreat house. Instead of a normal supporting structure, a special wood joint with metal supporting joints is used to enhance the aestheticity and provides a natural feeling for the space. The balcony is created from the main entrance as a walk way and also for the resident to enjoy the waterfall view.

The wooden panels and beams creates a segmented curvature of the roof planes and facades are covered with glass panels. The kitchen is placed at a lower level which is close to the pool site of the waterfall so that the resident can enjoy the magnificient view while cooking. The reading room is designed as a fully glassed room to enhance light penetration. The main materials used in the building are natural elements which main intention is to adapt into the natural surroundings of the waterfall

UILDING DESIGN

#PROJECT BUILD A BACKPACK #ProjectBuildABackpack is a self initiative project of the study in making the daily on the go backpack for the urban and usage of an artist / architect / designer / street commuter. The thought and ideas of the process of the design comes from the need to compile all the equipments of the daily use to fit into a pack which is convenient and usable for the daily commute. The desing process started from simple sketches and studies of other backpacks on the ergonomics and sizes of used equipments. To give the best dimensions fit perfectly for the user at all causes. The study or ergonomics is also very important in the process of design the outlook. The limitations from materials that are available made it more challenging. The material studies consists of aspects of comfortness, durability, flexibility in usages, and most importantly user friendly to the user. The study of plastics and metal and canvases thought me how all materials can be designed in a more durable way from the type of joints and threads we use. The overall progress of this project taken up to 2 weeks from the chocies of materials to the design from drawings and to take up the skill of embroidery, to create and produce your own designed bag. To be your own maker, rising the awareness of the maker’s culture. A simple and minimal design approach to fit for a multiple used backpack.
