Vaccinations Seek advice from your GP at least eight weeks prior to your trip to ensure you know what you need, what the risks are at your holiday destination, and so that the vaccinations have time to work. Diphtheria, polio and tetanus (combined vaccine and usually a booster), typhoid and sometimes hepatitis A are usually free on the NHS. For general travel information try www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/home.aspx Sun safety In hot climates try and be in the shade particularly between 11am and 3pm. Cover up, wear a wide brimmed hat and use at least factor 15 sunscreen. If you do get burnt, try having a light shower with cool water and apply aftersun or calamine lotion. Ibuprofen could also help reduce inflammation caused by sunburn. Antimalarial protection medication varies in duration of dosage and how far in advance you should take it. Always try to take precautions to stop yourself being bitten. Wear strong repellent and long-sleeved clothes, especially after sunset. DEET-based insect repellents are generally recommended. Upset stomach Always carry sanitising gel or hand wipes. Where possible, choose food that is freshly cooked to a high temperature and served immediately. Boiled water and bottled drinks (with intact seals) are usually safe. Do not use ice in drinks unless in an established hotel chain. Take medicine with you Always take a travel first aid kit with you, and make sure you have sufficient travel insurance to cover medical emergencies quickly and efficiently. Take the relevant forms with you.

THE SHADE OF LOVE
RING-A-DING-DING According to a study by luxury high street jeweller, Goldsmiths, research found that six in ten people described the perfect proposal setting as a snow-filled winter’s day, followed by a beach proposal. Taking it a step further, Christmas Day was voted the ideal day to get engaged by more than half of those surveyed; French capital, Paris, topped the most desired location for a proposal backdrop. “Asking someone to marry you or being proposed to is one of the most memorable occasions in a person’s life and people go to great lengths to make sure the moment is perfect,” shares Craig Bolton, executive director at the jewellers. WOULD YOU CHOOSE YOUR OWN ENGAGEMENT RING? YES...
NO WAY... SAYS EDITOR HANNAH FAULDER
As much as the thought of my partner choosing my engagement ring on his own would be super-romantic and very sweet, the reality is that I’m very particular with what I wear! The amount of pressure on him to get it right would be immense, particularly with the potentially large price tag. I’d rather choose the ring together, that way we can bond over a shared experience and I can make sure I get something that I know I’ll be excited to wear for the rest of my life.

THE WHITE HOT LIST Tried and tested for you... Big Happy Memory Keeping Planners, £34.99, happybags.co.uk
This gorgeous book is ideal for a crafty brideor groom-to-be who wants to remember the planning and lead up to their special day. The Big Happy Memory Keeping Planner includes 12 months of undated pages, monthly and weekly calendars, 13 laminated dividers and 23 additional memory keeping themed pages, which can be added or removed thanks to the handy disk-based spine. Additional accessories are available such as pocket cards and photograph sleeves making your journal bespoke to you.
SAYS EDITOR SARAH REEVE Call me old fashioned but I love the idea of my other half trawling the internet and browsing shop windows, putting in some spade work, trying to find out my ring size, likes and dislikes. The effort and thought behind it would mean way more to me than a fabulous sparkler I’d chosen myself. Receiving anything bespoke or that’s been personally selected by a loved one, instantly increases its value in my eyes and you can always drop a few subtle hints along the way to make sure they choose a style you like.

REAL WEDDIN NGS
last-minute decision to go out for a drink in Beaconsfield led to Jessica and Matt’s meeting. It turned out they’d lived around the corner from each other growing up without knowing it, and Matt and Jess’s brother were even at the same school. They got talking, and the rest was history. Three years to the day later, on December 18th, 2015, Matt took Jess on a date to Windsor. Their day began at the castle, where security spotted the ring in Matt’s pocket as it went through the scanners, and made comments. However, luckily for the groom-to-be, Jess was oblivious. In the afternoon, Matt surprised Jess with a private river cruise before dinner. “The boat had been covered in fairylights from bow to stem,” says the bride. “It was so romantic.” At their destination, the Oakley Court Hotel, every tree was lit up, and lanterns lined the path to a table covered in candles and flowers. The penny finally dropped for Jess just as Matt got down on one knee. “I was so overwhelmed and surprised, I didn’t hear a word he said and actually asked him to say it all again the next day!”
BEFOR RE The river had been such an important factor in the proposal, they decided to get married by it too, and chose the beautiful All Saints Church in Marlow. “We spent a year attending Sunday services to build our connection,” says Jess. “It was a lovely thing to do.” When it came to the reception, Danesfield House proved perfect, boasting stunning views and beautiful gardens. “We wanted a traditional white wedding, and loved the old-style interior. The Versailles Suite, where the wedding was set up, needed minimal decoration and was bright enough to lift any weather, with high ceilings and mirrors. But there was more than that, as both bride and groom discovered a personal connection to Danesfield – Matt was in the RAF, and the house was the site of RAF Medmenham until 1977, while Jess had been born in France and taken on walks around Versailles as a baby. “It was just meant to be,” she says.

REAL WEDDIN NGS
DURIN NG Jess wore a gown by Jesus Peiro for the big day. “It was only my second wedding dress appointment, so I never expected to find the one that quickly. Everyone was sworn to secrecy for the next year. I told my dad my dress was black and covered in pink pompoms, which of course he didn’t believe, but when he actually saw me in my gown the look on his face is a memory I will hold forever. I also hadn’t appreciated how lovely it would be to have time with him in the car. We just chatted away and took loads of silly selfies!” Matt wore his RAF uniform for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, and the other military personnel attended in uniform, while Matt’s grandfather, Dick, also proudly wore his Navy veteran blazer. For the entrance, Amy, the maid-ofhonour, suggested the Love Actually theme. “I was so excited,” says Jess. “It was dramatic, uplifting and romantic.” And for the signing of the register, I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You was sung beautifully by the children’s choir. “It really was the happiest day,” says the bride. “We loved every single second and both had smiles from ear to ear.”
AFTER R Matt arranged for the Queen’s Colour Squadron to come and form lining parties at Danesfield House, but the biggest surprise was the weather – it was a glorious day and the bridesmaids even got mildly sunburnt. As a self-confessed control freak, Jess worried she’d be clock watching, but actually didn’t give it a second’s thought. “If you do the prep, it will be alright on the night,” she says. For entertainment, they were conscious that the period following the wedding breakfast could be a bit of a lull, so hired an amazing magician to entertain for two hours up to the cutting of the cake and the first dance, which was to Frank Sinatra’s The Way You Look Tonight. Colour-changing lights signalled the transition to evening, and there was also a fun casino as an alternative to the dancefloor. Most importantly, the couple made an effort to steal a moment away, step back and take in the scene, and all the people they loved. “It was so overwhelming,” says the bride. “But it was a relief to put the brakes on, have a glass of champagne together and just say, ’How are you?’ and ’Isn’t this amazing?’” 35

Claire Farley, 28, married Jack Rider, 26, at St Mary the Virgin, Hurley, with a reception at Bisham Abbey, on 6th August, 2016. 39
A
s Claire and Jack are both sports teachers, it’s not surprising that the engagement involved some exercise. “We had fish and chips on the beach at Salcombe in Devon, followed by a walk, then Jack proposed to me at the top of a hill,” says Claire. “It was a total surprise.” Two years later, on the big day, the sporting endeavours continued, as not only was their wedding held on the first day of the Rio Olympics, but it was at the very venue at which many of Team GB trained – Bisham Abbey. The marquee decorations referenced the many nations competing at Rio, and there was even a cricket match in the afternoon. Here, Claire tells us more about their Olympian wedding...
Jack grew up in Hurley, so getting married in the church of St Mary the Virgin was a natural choice.
Bisham Abbey was a picturesque spot with extrem ely helpful staff. We never planned to have the wedding inside and so the space outside on the bank of the Thames was exactly what we were looking for.

SSaying our vows during the ceremony was the most special part of the whole day.
The bouquet was a dramatic horizontal stretched shape, very foliage heavy, with beautiful soft delicate flora, decorated with feathers, lace and trailing ribbon.
The wedding cake was a three-tier white cake with splashes of rose gold detailing surrounding real pink roses. The simple italic ‘Love’ cake topper was sprayed rose gold.
The reception tables were decorated with rose gold sequin runners and charming centrepieces. The head table had a wild, foliage heavy table runner. It was finished beautifully with blush pink and earl grey roses and smelt incredible.
We love the fact that we were able to organise our entire wedding day in just six months. We found fantastic suppliers who worked together amazingly to bring our day together beautifully.

THE FINA L It’s the grand final of this year’s competition and we have five fantastic weddings, but which one deserves the Wedding of the Year 2017 title? Take a look and cast your vote…
Abbie Kennedy married Mitch Kennedy at Lillibrooke Manor on 1st April, 2017. Their Disney-themed day was captured by Leah Roberts Photography (leahroberts.co.uk).
Abbiee on... Marrried lifee The best thing about married life is being able to call each other husband and wife as well as best friend, and knowing that this is just the start of a big adventure with lots more memories to be made.
)LUVW DQQQLYHHUVDU\\ FHOHå åDWWLRQQV A few years ago I bought Mitch snowboarding lessons for Christmas. We’ll finally be putting them to good use in Canada, with a trip away sightseeing in Vancouver and then snowboarding in Whistler.
:K\\ ëH\\ VKKRXOGG ZLQQØ Our wedding day was so personal to us. Everyone came together to help give us the most perfect day and every guest said they had a great time. It was lovely to see our photos in a magazine and now we have that in our memory box but it would be even more amazing to win.
Sarah Stevens married Alec Kersey at Stoke Place Hotel on 26th March 2017. Their nature-themed day was captured by Eneka Stewart Photography (enekastewart.com).
Saraah onn.... Marrriedd liffe Alec and I were together twelve years before tying the knot and the marriage is a celebration of our commitment and friendship. It’s so lovely having someone there on a daily basis who completely understands you, sharing special moments and laughter.
)LUVWW DQQQLYYHUVDDU\ FHHOHå åDWLRQQV We’re very lucky to live surrounded by gorgeous countryside and will likely go for a walk together during the day and have a lovely dinner at our favourite restaurant in the evening. I’m sure we’ll reminisce through our photos too, bringing back wonderful memories of the day.
:K\\ ëHH\ VVKRXXOG ZLLQØ We had incredible help and support from family and friends to achieve our dream day. It would be the icing on the cake to win the competition for them. Having set out with so many ideas, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve half of it without the input of others. 46
WEDDING OF THE YEA AR
Gemma Bosworth married Ross Anderson at The Great Barn, Aynho, on 21st April, 2017. Their Disney-themed day was captured by David Bostock (davidbostockphotography.co.uk).
Gem mma onn.... Marrriedd liife The fact is, nothing has changed. Ross still treats me with respect, he’s kind, loving, helps with the housework and we still go on dates. But most importantly, I love the excited feeling that I get in the mornings when I wake. Knowing that I get to spend every day of my life with Ross as husband and wife.
)LUVWW DQQQLYYHUVDDU\ FFHOHå åDWLRQVV Spending the weekend in our home that we’ve been building together. We'll have our favourite fillet steak from our local butchers and a bottle of Champagne. When you do shift work you can go days before seeing each other properly, therefore when we get to spend a whole weekend together we cherish it because it doesn’t matter where in the world we are as long as we are together.
:K\\ ë ëH\ VVKRXXOG Z ZLQØ Ø Our wedding was the best that it could have been, thanks to all of the local independent people helping out behind the scenes. I want to share with everyone our photos and experiences so they can see how hiring the right team makes all the difference for the big day.

e took The Importance of Being Earnest and reinvented it for the modern-day couple, with all the style and elegance of the 1890s but none of the stuffiness,” says Three Graces stylist and shoot coordinater Sarah Mitchell. “We had the input of two exceptional bridalwear designers. Joanne Fleming’s ivory Chatterton gown was perfect: sympathetic to the era in design while offering contemporary couture elements. Sarah Willthard’s bridal separates are from her Whispers of Love collection, her most romantic to date. The lace boots, by House of Elliot England, were inspired by the original wedding boots of the era. For the menswear, we styled the tweed suits with fine cotton shirts and vintage silk cravats to add the dapper city-gent-in-the-country feel.”

“Wasing Park served as the perfect country retreat, with its rolling lawn, Victorian summer house and grand mansion,” says Sarah. “The floral design was centred around a bouquet of pure blue delphiniums to symbolise innocence and purity and the other elements were selected for their sensual contrast and to offer a sense of enduring romance.”

GOING GREEN?
How to make sure your big day doesn’t cost the earth, literally
Going green How to make sure your big day doesn’t cost the earth, literally
I
n recent years the emphasis on becoming more eco-friendly has become increasingly apparent, even more so with David Attenbourgh’s recently aired Blue Planet II, featuring shocking scenes of plastic-filled oceans. The repercussions of this TV show only adding fuel to the green living trend further. But why just go eco in the home? Our experts offer top tips and tricks on how to incorperate it into your nuptials too...
Going local Here, Laura Celiz from Rock the Day Styling offers an array of advice on how to have a more eco-friendly wedding. y When looking for a venue source local farmers who are willing to rent out their land. We’re seeing a lot more land owners who have woodlands and barns that couples can now use for their big days. Guests can also use the site for camping, which gives the wedding a festival feel. y Why not opt for local florists who are growing their own flowers? This means that brides-to-be are getting a more natural and organic look, as well as knowing that the flowers have been treated well and not sprayed with any chemicals. 56
y Choose natural table arrangements such as recycled jam jars that can be used for floral arrangements. Natural green foliage is very on-trend and this can be bought cheaply too. Find local suppliers that use recycled paper for stationery items such as the table plan and invitations. Why not hire natural wood tables and chairs that look amazing and don’t need a lot of dressing? y Definitely think regional! It’s all about supporting your local suppliers and lowering the carbon footprint. It’s also a great way to reflect your home town. For more information, visit rockthedaystyling.co.uk
ECO WEDDINGS
Green conscience
According to a study by Count on Me, (countonme.today), the average UK wedding is now said to cost £25,000, but it’s not just the financial expense you should take in to account when planning your dream day. The same wedding in the UK will cost you between 14-26 tonnes of carbon. To put this into perceptive, a normal person in Britain will generate around 14 tonnes of carbon in a year.
Food for thought
Going for gold
y Around 90 per cent of cut flowers are imported into the UK, choose regionally-grown, organic blooms to lessen the impact on the environment.
Would it really make a difference to your carbon footprint if you followed these guidelines? Using the same criteria as the previous calculations, Count on Me worked out the carbon emissions of a wedding at Bournemouth-based The Green House Hotel, (thegreenhouse hotel.co.uk), and the results speak for themselves...
y If you’re eating Argentinian steak and drinking wine from New Zealand, your footprint won’t thank you for it. Try and keep your food as local as possible and, if you want to go the extra noncarbon mile, opt for organic or even vegan menus.
y Go with a venue that will recycle 100 per cent of your waste, or, of course, you can do this yourself. The average wedding generates over half a tonne of rubbish, so doing what you can will make a huge difference.
y This eco venue cuts your carbon emissions down to two tonnes, less than a third of what it would cost at a non-eco venue in the UK.
Voted Best Green Hotel by Condé Nast this year, The Green House Hotel boasts private events rooms, beautiful gardens and is situated a stone’s throw from the stunning beach. The popular wedding package includes exclusive-use of this exquisite venue for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, invites guests to toast the happy couple with glasses of Dorset bubbly, sources ingredients ethically from a 50-mile radius of the top table and delivers all this in a fabulously restored Victorian villa, which has been voted the Number One Boutique Eco-Hotel in the world.
"WPJE ÞBTIJOH UIF QMBTUJD Michelle Marwood, events and new business coordinator, at awardwinning Essex-based venue Hylands House, (hylandsestateweddings. co.uk), talks us through ways to help make weddings more environmentally-friendly while retaining an elegant style. “We’ve all become more aware of the harm plastic is doing to the world. A recent study reported in The Guardian newspaper found that humans have produced 8.3bn tonnes of plastic since the 1950s, with the majority polluting our earth and oceans. “The growth in plastic production has been driven largely by packaging and the rise of single-use containers, wrapping and bottles, so try to keep packaging and other plastics at your wedding to the minimum. “Here are some tips on how to do this and make your wedding as exquisite and beautiful as our environment.”
y Talking of seeds, why not ask guests to bring birdseed to throw instead of confetti?
y Desserts such as lollies and marshmallow treats can be supplied on wooden sticks, while icecreams can be served in paper tubs.
Your day can be one full of romantic memories and gestures. At the same time you will be doing your best to help save the planet.
y Try not to use plastic glasses and certainly ditch the plastic straws in favour of paper ones. y Put bars of soaps in the toilets, perhaps placed in nice hessian bags, decorated with flowers around them and remove plastic liquid soap containers. y Give wedding favours that are not only natural but help our ecosystem such as wildflower seeds in personalised paper packaging or, even better, in linen or hessian bags.

FLOWERS
Stunning floral ideas for your big day What are the latest trends in wedding flowers? We asked some of our favourite big-day suppliers, from flower farmers to florists to event specialists.
LOCALLY GROWN For those conscious of their carbon footprint or wanting to support local businesses, freshly picked, seasonal flowers grown within 20 miles of your wedding venue are becoming increasingly popular.
“When it comes to choosing your wedding flowers, colour themes and seasonality often play a big part in the decision-making,” says Rosie Insley of Wild Rose Flower Company. Here, Rosie takes us through her pick of the 2018 flower trends....
SMALLER BOUQUETS Smaller bouquets not only enhance your dress but are lighter to carry, more flattering on camera and super elegant, and the more natural, textured, loose designs are becoming increasingly popular.
FOLIAGE ONLY Foliage-only bouquets and draping greenery overhead and on table runners have risen in popularity in recent years, and this natural look is more affordable than fresh flowers. Brides could introduce fresh fragrances with herbs like mint and lemon thyme.
Wild Rose Flower Company Wild Rose Flower Company is an artisan flower farm in North Bucks, selling seasonal scented flowers, available April to October. Call 07876 394 086 or visit wildroseflowercompany.co.uk
DEEP TONES With a looser, more natural, romantic style, we are moving away from 2017’s ivory, blush, pink colour palette, towards muted and deep shades like plum and sage green mixed with lighter tones like lilac.
STRIPPED BACK BUTTONHOLES Simple and chic styles are to replace elaborate decorations.

“Being nestled in the countryside surrounded by open fields and beautiful barns, my brides love the rustic look,” says Kerrie Raines of the Flower House. “A sunflower theme is very popular and a little different – it certainly stands out. The combination of sunflowers, gypsophila, lavender and daisies complement each other perfectly. Natural twine completes this stunning look.”
The Flower House
“A simple jam jar on a wooden slice is a perfect top table showstopper and will certainly get people talking. You can carry this theme through the whole venue and even just have lavender in them – it looks and smells great and you can guarantee your guests will be leave feeling very relaxed!” – Kerrie

Serena Honke of floral event specialists Petals and Confetti outlines three further key trends for 2018...
HEADPIECES AND FLORAL JEWELLERY Flower crowns have always been a favourite with brides for both themselves and their attendants. Trends are now moving towards smaller floral headpieces or fascinators using exotic flowers e.g. orchids, and wearing jewellery of metallics with flowers is a style set to rise in popularity.
Petals and Confetti
ELEGANCE AND OPULENCE Having that perfect mix of nature-inspired florals with accents of glamour for your wedding is a style, which is popular and set to rise. Bridal flowers will be elegant but opulent with oversized bouquets of varied florals, set off by lots of mixed greenery. Imagine large, showy blooms, peonies, garden roses and dahlias set against a background of different textures and colours of leaf. Whether handtied or cascade, bouquet styles will be informal and less structured; pastel or muted tones will be contrasted and lifted with accents of strong colour, and shapes will move away from formal and round to wider, more elliptical designs.
INDIVIDUALITY Displaying your own individuality and sense of style on your wedding day will continue to be a strong trend. Whether it’s having a bouquet that no one has had or seen before or putting touches of themselves and their fiancé’s love story into the special day, couples will want to show their guests something new and different but personal to them.
Petals and Confetti is a specialist wedding and event floral decoration company, offering bespoke designs to enhance special days and make them unforgettable. Call 07432 433 039 or visit petalsandconfetti.co.uk 65

What’s in a name? With so much wed-min to do you may not have given much thought to what will happen to your surname after the big day. Traditionally, the bride changes hers to match her new husband, but is that right for you? We take a look at your options… DO I NEED TO CHANGE MY NAME? According to a recent YouGov UK poll, 59 per cent of women would still like to take their partner’s surname after they tie the knot, although this is starting to change. It’s an emotional decision that risks feeling the loss of something you’ve grown up with, or the potential offence caused to your partner if you decide not to change it. Some people are concerned about a loss of identity; perhaps you’ve built an excellent reputation at work associated with your surname, or maybe you’re an only child with a strong desire to continue the family name. For same-sex couples there’s no convention, which can make the decision even harder. Whatever your situation, there are plenty of options out there so communicate openly with your partner and work out what suits you best. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? Keep your maiden name, but change your title. You don’t require a deed poll to change your title; in fact, Mrs, Ms, Miss etc. are not included on UK passports so you can just begin to use your chosen title. Take your partner’s name. Provided your marriage certificate shows both your maiden name and your partner’s name, this is sufficient
evidence of a name change. Just follow our checklist to notify the correct organisations. Take your partner’s name, but use your maiden name professionally. It is worth writing to your employer to confirm your intentions as legal documents and payroll will need to be updated to match the name used at your bank. Take your partner’s surname, but keep your maiden name as a middle name. This is becoming an increasingly popular option as it means you can keep links to your family name. For this, you will need to change your name by deed poll. Double-barrel your maiden name and your partner’s name. If your doublebarrelled name is clearly derived from your two surnames combined then your marriage certificate is sufficient evidence. Form a new surname from you and your partner’s name. Many couples decide to mesh their two names together to form a new surname, choosing something that represents the beginning of your life together. You will need to officially change your name by deed poll.
WHERE DO I TURN FOR HELP? If this list looks a bit scary then you can turn to NameSwitch (nameswitch.co.uk). For a small fee, they’ll whizz you through the whole process by supplying all the forms and letters you’ll need to alert every relevant organisation about your switch! 78

It sounds too good to be true but magnetic lashes are the answer to our prayers. There are two sets per eyelash; one goes on top, and the other underneath (hugging your natural lashes.) Cult skincare brand Aromatherapy Associates has just added six more facial oils to its award-winning wardrobe. It’s been formulating highly potent oils for almost 30 years and is acknowledged as one of the true global experts. Deeply nourishing, I’ve found these to be one of the most effective ways to improve my skin’s appearance and add some muchneeded radiance. My pick of the collection is its Hydrating, Revitalising Face Oil. What makes this different is the fact it works like a cream but instantly absorbs like a serum. Priced £53, from the website aromatherapyassociates.com The little-known ingredient Yuzu is being hailed as an Asian superfood. It’s used in many fusion dishes, however, I’ve heard that this unusual fruit also has fantastic anti-ageing properties. Combine that with 24k gold and we’re seeing two of the hottest skincare ingredients of 2018 and a great (really satisfying) way to exfoliate away dead skin cells. Expect to see this all over Instagram. Priced at £35 from janjira.co.uk Cabbages & Roses has launched its home scent range. It boasts timeless fragrances; such as the fresh Hyacinth & Gardenia. The candle and reed diffusers are all beautifully presented in its signature striped box that would make a great gift. The candle has a 40-hour burn time (£30) while the reed diffuser is priced at £34 from johnlewis.com 94
Who thinks looking good at the gym is as important as actually going? Me too, which is why I’m so happy to discover the monthly subscription box – Fit Bitch Club. Each subscriber is sent a box containing three fitness items every month, ranging from apparel and accessories to nutrition and beauty products (saving money on the RRP). Each one is curated with items of clothing from tried and tested brands, ready to inspire you to live fearlessly and instill confidence in one another. Founder Linda Cerminara says, “Fit Bitch Club represents all the women out there who have pushed or are pushing forward. It’s also about redefining the word.” If that isn’t inspiration to get down the gym I don’t know what is. Available at £39 from fitbitchclub.co.uk
If you love sheet masks but would prefer your skincare to be a little more natural then I may have found the solution. As Living Nature celebrates 30 years of providing certified natural Manuka honey products to the world, it’s launched a first – a bee venom mask. This is the first sheet mask from this highly-respected New Zealand-based company, providing a 100 per cent natural alternative to the synthetic masks currently on the market. What’s more, it contains the rejuvenating benefits of bee venom so you can look and feel good. Priced from £8 from botanicalbrands.com
Neutrogena’s new light therapy device is designed to help tackle inflammatory breakouts by delivering a targeted dose of red and blue light to attack bacteria and reduce redness. I predict this quick, on-the-go solution is set to be the saviour of many a savvy spot-sufferers and help bring added confidence in times of need. This is easily my new hero product. Priced at £29.99 from boots.com
My face tends to get very dry in the colder weather, but luckily KORRES has launched its Black Pine 3D Sculpting, Firming and Lifting skincare collection. It features a night cream and serum but I love the day cream. If your body needs a boost too, you may want to try an exfoliator. Following the ban on microbeads I happily support this Natura Siberica Oblepikha & Honey scrub that contains no plastics of any kind, while the buckhorn oil deeply nourishes. KORRES is from £36 from marksandspencer.com, Natura Siberica is £6 from naturasiberica.co.uk
As skincare becomes more advanced we, as consumers, also become a lot more savvy and demanding. The latest buzzword is alkaline skincare to help fight problem skin. I feel that one of the leaders here is Sönd – a brand so gentle it can easily be used on all the family. Created for sensitive and reactive skin, the range of five products is targeted at improving and re-balancing PH level. It features a cleanser, night and day cream and serum to help you feel good to glow. Priced from £22 from sondskin.co.uk
Following the success of the Handmade Beauty Book, Handmade Spa details exciting and healthy ways to recreate the spa experience at home. Not only are the recipes easy to follow, they can also be tailored to your own specific needs. I’ve found the advice o to be salon-worthy and after trying several new ideas, such as the hot cloth cleanser, n I was left with a feeling of wellbeing having learnt a new skill and being able h to actually relax in the process! Priced £16.99 from all good book stores. b

THE PERFECT MATCH Zoe Heathers Make-up artist & beauty consultant
I really want a flawless look for my special day, but I never wear foundation and don’t know where to start when it comes to choosing the right shade for my skin tone. Do you have any advice?
Zoe says: The best way to find the correct shade for your skin is by choosing three shades that are within your colour tone and put a little swatch of each colour on your cheek. Using a brush, blend them slightly into your skin. The swatch that blends to your skin tone without leaving a stronger colour mark is the colour match for you. To apply foundation with a flawless finish, I recommend a beauty blender sponge. The teardropshaped sponge is best, as it’s good to apply the foundation near the eyes and the teardrop shape can get into the edges perfectly. And if you don’t wear make-up that often, Kiko unlimited foundation gives you a good coverage without feeling too heavy.
BEAUTIFUL YOU I feel at my most confident when my hair is down, but I’m worried it won’t look that different on the Katie-Jane Whitlock day. Should I go for an up do or have my hair Hair stylist down, and if so, is there something I can do to make it feel special? Katie-Jane says: I often have brides who love their hair down but ask for an up do because they feel they should. I always say to go with what makes them feel the most confident and themselves. Just because it’s down on your big day doesn’t mean it won’t look as special as having it up. Add rollers to give it some volume and use straighteners to add some gorgeous waves to it. You can always pin one side back and place a clip or flowers in it. But don’t be afraid to go for a down look. Once you add it to your amazing dress like the Temperley one pictured, the whole look will come together and you’ll feel really special, just as you should on your special day.

Our local experts advise on making those big planning decisions

Neale says: Think about the kind of photographer you intend to employ to do this. Choose someone who is clearly a story teller and take a good long look at their website. What do the first pictures you find tell you? Are they detail photographs, like shoes and rings, formal group pictures and contrived posed images, or are they pictures that convey the emotion of a day and connect you with the strangers on a page you’re looking at? If it’s the latter, then in terms of the question above, this could be the best choice of photographer for you. Remember though, that you don’t necessarily need to create fun. Your wedding day is an amazing experience, there is little else in life that compares to the feelings you will encounter. Enjoy the day, don’t force it, be natural and let the photographer you choose tell your wedding story authentically? Neale James | Photographer breathepictures.com 104

I’d love my wedding album to be filled with fun and unusual pictures rather than the traditional wedding photography approach. How can we create this?
A SLICE OF THE ACTION
EXPERT ADVICE
Vanessa says: Why not add colour to a tier? This will complement the other colours used in your wedding and help tie the elements of your day together. Pick an ombre effect for a subtle play on colour, or request real fruit powders for a lovely, natural freckled effect. Playing with tier heights is another great way to impress. While fondant still has its place, buttercream cakes are storming the wedding world. Every bite is moist and delicious, and the design opportunities are endless – semi naked, textured and even watercolour effects are all hugely popular. Metallics are still hot. Add a few touches of gold leaf to brighten and catch the eye. Lastly, a carefully positioned bouquet of

Best dressed I can’t wait to get married and want to get it all wrapped up within the next 12 months. On average, how many bridal fittings should I attend, and when I should I start looking for the one? Ellie says: The most important thing to do before you start trying on dresses is research. Think about your wedding style and what you want to spend, then select a few well-rated bridal boutiques. Make sure their collections are different to get a broad range. Most brides try on around 20 dresses, but many end up buying the first one they tried on, so trust your instincts and trust the stylist. Don’t forget that most dresses are made to order and take anything from six to nine months to come in, so starting about one year before your wedding is perfect timing. Also, it’s good to talk to the shops before you book your appointment to get a feel of who they are and what kind of customer experience they will offer you. Don’t forget that designer boutiques will charge a small fee for a one-to-one consultation with a trained stylist, but this is well worth the money. Ellie Sanderson Bridal boutique owner elliesanderson.co.uk
Recipes for success We don’t want to have a sit-down wedding breakfast, but we still want our food to be extra-special. Can you suggest some other big-day catering possibilities? Hannah says: Whilst traditional sit-down menus will always be popular, many of our brides and grooms choose to opt for more informal, but still thoroughly impressive dining choices. One of our most popular food choices for a relaxed but super-special feast is our gourmet barbecue. Presented to the tables ‘family style’, guests can serve each other creating a friendly ice-breaker. Other popular options include sharing bowls for your guests – we’re talking slow cooked flavour packed meats, rich marinades, delicious Mediterranean dressed salads and artisan breads with dipping oils. Add a chef’s hat, carving set, and designate uncle Frank to play carver for the day; it will certainly add an entertainment element to the meal. Seafood, antipasti or patisserie food stations are tasty, luxurious and impressive. Your caterer can work with your florist to create beautiful stations with props and scented foliage decorative displays. Or what about live food, where chefs create the food in front of your guests? Put on a show with the food and you may not even need to hire evening entertainment! Hannah Martin | Director | gooseandberry.co.uk 105

HONEYMOON NEWS
Honeymoon like a royal W news of Prince Harry and Meghan With Markle’s 2018 wedding, Britt-Marie Monks, M the th Honeymoon Fixer at Not Just Travel, looks at a the potential honeymoon hotspots they might choose to relax in after their nuptials. m She S says, “The couple are said to be fond of Botswana, with many speculating that this is B where they’ll decide to head after the big day. w The T date for the wedding has been set for May, M and the weather in Africa is generally favourable at this time of the year. At the same time, this date rules out some of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, Sri Lanka and Mauritius, since these countries all experience their wet season at this time.” In 2017, 43 per cent of Britt’s honeymoon clients chose to visit the Maldives which, although warm, is also rather rainy in the spring and makes a far better option for those who marry in the early autumn. The Caribbean and Mexico was the choice for 26 per cent of Britt’s clients, but in May, Harry and Meghan would run
the risk of hurricanes and torrential rains – clearly not a recipe recipe i for relaxation! Stunning Sri Lanka was the third most popular destination, followed by Bali and the USA. Wherever Harry and his future wife decide to take their honeymoon, we’re sure it will be amazing! For more information, contact Britt-Marie Monks by email at britt.monks@notjusttravel.com

Drink it all in Famous for its food and wine, Melissa Barker discovers the beautiful island of Madeira
J
ust a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, Madeira is the ideal place for couples looking for a relaxing mini-moon. I was intrigued to find out why the island is so popular and I soon discovered it’s because of its subtropical climate, rich history, vibrant nightlife, relaxing beaches and delicious food. FOOD A PLENTY Shortly after arriving at Funchal airport we were whisked away to the five-star Belmond Reid’s Palace just outside of the city centre. We were escorted to our rooms where I was pleased to find a king-sized bed, grand bathroom and even a hand-written letter welcoming us to the hotel. A few hours later we began our food and wine tour courtesy of Discovering
Madeira. Our guide was very impressive and helped bring the city’s rich history to life through her stories and demonstrations. We walked through the quaint streets until we came across a charming establishment called Espaço Café where we tried some of the island’s delicacies including black scabbard fish. The fish lives deep in the sea and reports say nobody has ever seen it alive and that the fishermen have to use specially made nets to capture it. We spent some time discussing the island’s rich history before moving onto a brewery that served traditional Madeira wine. We were lucky enough to sample a selection of flavours paired with Madeira cake – delicious. We also visited a traditional chocolate shop, each sweet was made using rich natural flavours and hand-crafted into a piece of edible art. Our last stop was an outdoor ed café where we enjoyed garlic bread and ca scabbard fish. It’s situated in a street that sc used to be considered a rough area by us the locals until a group of artists decided th to paint each resident’s door with rich and vibrant colours. After a thorough tour of the vib island’s cultural delights it’s safe to say that isl was extremely full! Iw
UP IN THE SKY
110
Once the tour was finished we decided to take a trip in a cable car so we could see some of the island’s beautiful sights from above. At the top we were lucky enough to try Madeira’s famous toboggan sled ride. These wooden carts were once used as a form of transportation; members of the public would ride these down steep hills and the staff would then have to carry the toboggan back up the hill on their backs ready for the next customer to use. It’s something that everyone should experience once in their life – it was so much fun and unlike anything I’d experienced before. After a busy day, we ventured back to the Belmond Reid’s Palace for a delicious three-course dinner. Our candle-lit table overlooked the sea and created a truly romantic atmosphere. For starters we had
HONEYMOONS
V ti Venetian-style t l crab, b ffollowed ll db by ricotta i tt and d spinach tortellini for main and a cheesecake with cherry compote for dessert – a musthave if you’re visiting the hotel. We then retired to our room where I had the best night’s sleep I’d had in a long time. MIND YOUR STEP The following morning, we checked out of the Belmond Reid’s Palace and got ready to experience the adrenaline-filled activity known as canyoning. I must admit I’d never tried it before and started to feel slightly anxious. However, our lovely guides from Madeira Adventure Kingdom helped keep us calm and supplied us with the necessary equipment. We spent the next few hours walking through the countryside, abseiling and zip lining down waterfalls. This was the highlight of the trip for me, it was a truly exhilarating experience and is something I’d love to do again. PURE RELAXATION After an eventful morning, we visited the Quinta do Furão restaurant where we enjoyed a three-course lunch. I started with the duck, which came in a delicious
barbecue sauce, and for dessert I tried a chocolate pudding that was so good I would have happily eaten two! After lunch we checked into our second accommodation the Castanheiro Boutique Hotel – this four-star hotel is situated in the heart of Funchal in the historical zone. We spent the afternoon enjoying the rooftop pool and hot tub, surrounded by beautiful views of the city. After a few hours of pure bliss we tried a traditional Espetada dinner at the Adega da Quinta restaurant. This dish is usually beef served on a skewer that’s attached to the ceiling, it’s a delicious delicacy that I’d definitely recommend. A THING OF BEAUTY The following morning I woke up in a king-sized bed overlooking the city and felt extremely grateful to be at such a beautiful destination. We took a trip to the island’s natural infinity pools and enjoyed a swim in the beautiful waters before heading back to the hotel ready for an afternoon of pampering. I enjoyed a full-body massage and spent the rest of the afternoon in the indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, making the most of the luxurious amenities available. The staff were lovely and went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable and had a relaxing experience. That evening we went to the Nini Design Centre, a museum that showcases the famous Nini Andrade Silva’s work but also doubles as a restaurant. We got to take a look at some of her impressive collection before beginning our three-course meal. It was delicious and I got to try my first ever crème brûlée, something I wish I’d done years ago. After dinner we walked back to the hotel through the city and got to see its vibrant nightlife come alive. Waking up the next morning I felt a sense of disappointment to be leaving – Madeira went beyond my expectations and is a destination that I’m keen to visit again.y

1 USA
ORLANDO, EVERGLADES, MIAMI AND THE FLORIDA KEYS Fly into Orlando and out of Miami for a truly magical month-long moon! Theme parks alone could keep you occupied for the best part of a month, with six Disney parks, three Universal parks, not forgetting Kennedy Space Centre, Discovery Cove, Legoland… the list goes on! Once you’ve had your fill of rides, drive down to the Everglades, home to more than 200,000 alligators. Hop on an airboat for an exhilarating ride through the wetlands, followed by a
leisurely l l walk lk around d the h area’s nature trails. l From the h Everglades l d it’s a stone’s throw to the Florida Keys for some proper rest and relaxation. Each one of the Keys has its own charm, but I’d suggest heading all the way to Key West for the perfect combination of beachside bliss and buzzy bars. Finish your trip with a couple of days in Miami to indulge in arty buildings, retail therapy and the iconic muscle beach!
2 MALAYSIA AND AUSTRALIA It’s perfectly possible to create an excellent tour of Malaysia in a fortnight, taking in the bright lights of Kuala Lumpur, sampling fabulous street-food in Penang, touring the tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands and unwinding on the beautiful beaches of Langkawi. However, with an additional fortnight you could create
112
a twin-centre trip with Perth, the largest city in Western Australia. Just a five-hour flight away from Kuala Lumpur, it’s the perfect starting point to tour the iconic Margaret River wineries as well as ticking off those bucket-list essentials such as whale watching, dolphin spotting and swimming with stingrays!
HONEYMOONS
3 CROATIA
Fly into Dubrovnik and out of Zagreb for a honeymoon packed full of history, culture and incredible natural sights. Just two hours from the UK, Croatia is rapidly becoming a honeymoon hotspot and has won legions of celebrity fans drawn to its beautiful islands and spectacular Game of Thrones filming locations. A month will allow you to travel from one end of the country to the other, with plenty of time to relax by the coast. Inland, Plitvice National Park is a must-see, with its crystal clear lakes and stunning waterfalls creating one of the most incredible natural wonders in Europe. A day trip simply doesn’t do it justice so, if you can, spend a night in the area so you have two days to explore the lakes properly.
4 NEW ZEALAND Let’s face it, it’s simply not possible to do justice to New Zealand in a fortnight! Travelling there and back eats up at least two days of your honeymoon, and that’s not taking into account the jet-lag! Both the North and the South Island have much to offer newlyweds – this truly is a land of fire and ice, with thermal springs, snow-
capped mountains, volcanos and glaciers. Thrill-seekers will be in their element, with white water rafting, heli-skiing, mountain biking and one of the highest bungee jumps in the world, while those in search of a slower pace of life should opt for a self-drive adventure, soaking up some of the world’s most spectacular scenery.
