Best holiday experiences with alpine charm since 1642 Dear Friends of the Trattlerhof!
O
ur 130-year anniversary was celebrated with numerous highlights worthy of the occasion. We are very thankful for the loyal participation of our “Friends of the Trattlerhof”, with whom this year became something truly special – read more about it in our 3rd edition of the Hofpost! The anniversary year was an opportunity for us to collectively pause for thought, and look back on the roots and rich history of the Trattlerwirt since 1642. But the year was likewise an opportunity for us all to look forward to the future. After all, in order to shape the future we must first know where we come from! Which is why we are determined both to preserve our traditions as well as remain open to things that are new. This harmony of tradition and innovation reflects the spirit of the those of us here at the Trattlerhof, both then and now – and that is the way it should remain! See for yourself as you browse this edition of the Hofpost: Since 2014, the Trattlerhof has been CO2-positive. Many “Impulses on the Mountain” will return again in 2015 ... and our innovative food cloche celebrates its own birthday. Enjoy our “Best Holiday Experiences with Alpine Charm”, as you allow yourself to be inspired and pampered by the Trattlerhof’s dedicated team.

GOOD then and now
The Trattlerhof represents a living family tradition and a piece of Austrian gastronomic and tourism history.
T
he Forstnigs, a family of hoteliers from Bad Kleinkirchheim, celebrated their 130year anniversary as hotel hosts in 2014: this four-star hotel has been owned by the same Carinthian family since 1884. While the “Trattlerkeusche” back then was still a simple inn, the Trattlerhof of today is an upscale establishment and simultaneously one of the most tradition-rich businesses in Carinthia. If you look even further back into the history of the Trattlerhof, you actually encounter a tradition spanning more than 370 years, originally begun by the Jesuits in the mid-17th century. On 14 July 1642, the order granted the then owners of the Trattlerhof the so-called “Tafernrecht”, essentially an innkeeping concession associated with a number of other privileges, including brewing and distilling rights, as well as permission to bake their own bread. All of this and more was excellent cause for celebration:

o surprise then, that not only many faithful guests of the Trattlerhof attended our grand anniversary celebration, but also a number of prominent figures from the region including mayor of Kleinkirchheim Mathias Krenn, Wilhelm Wadl from the Carinthia State Archive, as well as Deacon Theo Srienz. The atmosphere was elated from the very outset of this festive evening: a reception out on the Trattlerhof sun terrace, live music – and excellent wines courtesy of the traditional Johanneshof Reinisch and Ipsmiller wineries! Afterwards, our guests were able to enjoy the delectations of our gala dinner and admire the models in their trendy traditional clothes, part of a fashion show presented by Gössl, the prestigious folkwear house. Hotelier Jakob Forstnig also invited Mercedes to come aboard as a partner who also happened to be celebrating their 130-year anniversary: In 1884, Maibach and Daimler famously built their very first Mercedes. The very latest generations of Mercedes were available for hotel guests to test drive for the remainder of our anniversary weeks.

T
rattlerhof guests have lots of reasons to be beaming: not least because of a very special Anniversary Bonus this summer: Vacationing couples and families, whose ages when added together came to more than 130 years, enjoyed an upgrade – if booking directly – to the next-highest room category. Trattlerhof regulars who chose to stay at the Trattlerhof during our special program weeks also received two bottles of our exclusive Anniversary Cuvee from the Trattlerhof ’s famous source for outstanding wines, Kulturweingut Johanneshof Reinisch from Tattendorf in Lower Austria. Furthermore, our anniversary year greeted all of our guests with yet another sweet surprise: the “Hof Torte”, a cake made according to a special Gutshof recipe, presented to them as our gift as they departed for home. Famous beach-volleyball player and 2013 European Champion Doris Schwaiger is presented a Hof Cuvee

Carinthia at the Einkehr. f you are in the mood for a romantic outing, why not make yourself comfortable in the back of our horse-drawn carriage and allow us to drive you through the picturesque valley of Kleinkirchheim. Along the way, you might wish to make a “pit stop” to check out the rest of the Trattler stable. At the Trattlerhof, we have given schooling horses and other ponies a modern home right next to the new riding stable and paddock. It isn’t just the horses who benefit from the new stables: Equestrian fans, too, can now enjoy an excellent, compact riding center at the Trattlerhof. Certified riding instructors offer introductory classes for beginners, lessons on the lunge line, as well as dressage instruction and trail rides for experienced riders. If you feel completely at home on horseback, you should absolutely trot along some of the bridle paths in the Nockberge Biosphere Park, allowing yourself to be enchanted by the beautiful natural landscapes. Equally as magical are our torchlight hikes with a complete train of horses and ponies, winding up in the evening around the delightful campfire at the Einkehr.

he Forstnigs are pioneers when it comes to energy efficiency – and they are already recipients of the Austrian Eco Label for their sustainable environmental initiatives. Most recently, these eco pioneers in the hotels business were proud to add the Greenleaders Award in Gold to their list of honors, bestowed upon them by the online tourism platform TripAdvisor as part of their Eco frontrunner program. Today, these passionate hoteliers meet their entire electrical needs from a combination of hydropower and biomass heating. In fact, they now produce more energy than
they emit CO²! Their energy efficiency is refined even more through an electromobility concept: Hotelier Forstnig, who is himself an avid fan of e-mobility, also opened the door to that special electric driving sensation here at the Trattlerhof – making it accessible to his guests. Ever since, the “juice” that flows through the silent engine of the eMercedes as well as the e-bikes comes from the Trattlerhof ’s own two e-fueling stations. Wine and enjoyment with “Winemakers on the mountain”
G
athering for this enological “summit meeting” at the Trattlerhof in 2014 were star winemakers from some of the most famous wine-growing regions in Austria and Slovenia. In hosting the event, the Trattlerhof continued a beloved tradition whose origins actually go back for centuries: In fact, it was the Jesuits who originally granted the Trattlerwirt its “Tafern- und Schankrecht” back in 1642, a type of inn-keeping concession prescribed by the laws of that time. So it was that the innkeepers were able to
pour “grape juice” into the glasses of sumpters in order to help provide them an added boost as they struggled with their cargo over the alpine passes. A bill from the 18th century still exists to this day in the Trattlerhof chronicle, indicating delivery of a 150-liter cask of wine. We wish to thank all winemakers for their participation! TIP: In winter 2014/15 and summer 2015, acclaimed winemakers will once again present their wines!

he dialogue series “Impulse on the Mountain” once again featured presentations by major figures from a wide variety of fields: theologians and psychologists, veterinarians and watchmakers, along with a commemorative event entitled “In Memorium Erwin Ringel”, all captivating and educating interested listeners.
The initiators of this successful series of dialogues, Protestant pastor Uwe Träger and hotelier Jakob Forstnig, have organized 31 different “Impulse Evenings” during the last 4 years. Consistent with this tradition, 2015 will see acclaimed presenters discuss topics such as climate change and its effects on
S
ome ten years ago, hotelier Jakob Forstnig Sr. took out a patent at the Austrian Patent Office for his extremely practical invention: Since that time, his food cloche has been available on the market in Austria and neighboring countries, an ingenious approach to keeping foods fresh, and now quite inseparable from its creator. Back then, the senior owner of the Trattlerhof in Bad Kleinkirchheim was looking for a flexible, simple and hygienic solution for his restaurant and hotel, in order to present a variety of foods in an appealing fashion, keep them fresh, and meet all of the health regulations. The food cloches are high-quality and custom-made, either from wrought iron (model “Rustika”) or stainless steel (model “Classica”) as well as glass and wood, with the metal structure holding the Plexiglas hood in place, which in turn is connected by means of a cable to a stone or a metal counterweight. Now, cheese, fruit and sausage cold cuts can not only be presented in an appetizing way, they can also be kept cool and protected. Concealed in the rotating tray itself are also cooling pads, functioning as a built-in refrigeration system

New epicurean experiences at our “Einkehr” chalet restaurant I
n creating the “Einkehr”, the Trattlerhof has essentially encapsulated the Alpine romance generally associated with an entire mountain community within a single business. It entices, not only with a sunny terrace and
cozy dining rooms, but also with the tempting fragrances emanating from its kitchen: The dishes served here have garnered endless praise from “foodies” for their lively interpretation and refined blend of regionality and
quality. No wonder, then, that our culinary artistry was also discovered by A-la-Carte Magazine, with the Einkehr now taking its rightful place in the current edition of Guide A la Carte. The 81 points from Falstaff last
year also confirmed the achievements of this innovative kitchen team and their inspiring recipes. It is only logical, then, that Trattlers Einkehr is likewise an active participant in the successful gastro initiative “GenussWirt”, whose members are dedicated to quality local products and specialties that are certified as originating from within Carinthia’s culinary regions.
TIP: Cuisine on the Mountain
C “

Also offered were variations on Lavanttal asparagus, regional meat and fish specialties during summer grilling season, with finishing touches added in autumn by wild game and, for the first time, organic Carinthian free-range goose. The culinary highlights were accompanied by outstanding wines from Austria, Italy and Slovenia.
