The state of Virginia is also considered a wine lover’s paradise producing popular red varietal wines including merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and chambourcin and popular white varietal wines such as chardonnay, riesling and viognier.

The oldest winery in the state is Chateau Morrisette which was opened in 1978 and is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, an hour from Roanoke and two hours from Greensboro, North Carolina. There are now more than 400 vineyards that produce one of a kind, award-winning drops and have a big following.
Spanning the central and southern areas of Washington State, Columbia Valley also has a long, consistent growing season which allows it to produce some of the boldest red wine varieties including cabernet sauvignon, syrah and merlot, and the more unusual varieties of petit verdot, mourvèdre, and petite sirah.
The unique wines are known for having the structure and finesse of Old World wines combined with the fruit and ripeness of the New World style.
