Wildlife Encounters
2019-20
The summer Arctic nights offer no darkness and frequently little sleep, but after a brief rest my radio crackled waking me very early in the morning. ‘Bears Paul, ten o’clock, two miles’. The plural was not lost on me or any of my passengers on board the small ice vessel. By the time I trained my optics on the ivory trio, the deck was lined with lenses and binoculars brandished like Nelson’s starboard canons at Trafalgar. The single parent family viewed us quizzically before the precocious yearlings sashayed across the frozen, contoured carpet to examine this steel-hulled intruder. Within minutes they were within yards. They stayed all day. It was magnificent and there were many tears: good tears, tears that betrayed the realisation of a dream. It was only day two, every day since then, these guests reminded me of it. Wildlife is not to be gauged by numbers but by quality. It is all about the moment but if it is protracted, so much the better. Certain species can become compulsions, frequently obsessions or even infatuations. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.
2
People who have not sampled this faunal narcotic don’t get it, they never will. Addicts don’t arrive at these far-flung wildlife Edens by accident and it is frequently after patient research. They have spent a not inconsiderable chunk of hard-earned cash on their class A expedition or safari, but realise that the high they are craving may not materialise. They get this too but are aware, as the greatest ever golfer Gary Player said, that ‘the harder they practise, the luckier they get’. However, when a cheetah knocks down a gazelle in full flight or a Humpback breaches right next to them the rush is far more intense than any artificial substance could ever induce, but beware, the cold turkey can be just as visceral. Inside these pages are hopefully many holidays that can bring you close to that rush, but it is not an exacting science, it never will be, thank you for appreciating that. Tears, good tears, may you have rivers of them.

Guiding Lights
Your wildlife experience is often completely reliant on your guides. Ours combine the characteristics of knowledge, enthusiasm and passion. Sometimes their skills are little short of sorcery. Working with wildlife is often challenging; they make it look easy. Here are a few of them who look forward to guiding you in the future, they are our guiding lights.

The Tear Index
Tears, good tears, we can’t get enough of them and they seem more common on wildlife holidays than any other. It can be a first sighting, a beautiful dawn or a rush of emotions after a hunt but it seems our faunal friends elicit the onion effect like no other. Here are some recent teary endorsements: ‘My first snow leopard’
‘Bubble net feeding Humpbacks, unforgettable’
‘Seeing my first cheetah kill’
‘Landing on a South Georgia beach with millions
‘Swimming with seals in Galapagos’ ‘My first Polar bear on ice’ (we had a lot of these) ‘Spending an hour with a Desert elephant and its tiny calf’ ‘A fleeting moment of a tigress with two sub-adults, the mother looked right through me’

Winter days are short this far north in Norway, but this matters little when the Aurora makes such a comprehensive job of engulfing the sky. The Vesteralen Islands have their fair share of wildlife but seeing the Northern Lights above the Arctic Circle provides the real box office sensation. Critically the wonderful lodge accommodation is superbly positioned right above its own fjord.

Carpathian Walking & Bears
Almost half the European population of Brown bears is recorded in the Carpathian Mountains. For centuries the local people have existed in harmony with a rare variety of wildlife that they are keen to share. Walking in this region is like taking a journey back in time, with many still using horse-drawn carts and much of the area steeped in folklore and tradition.

Another amazing week in the “ Masai Mara. We had so many top quality sightings of leopards with cubs, lions with cubs, a cheetah kill and a new born elephant. The guides were excellent and worked hard to get us into the best position for photos, whilst respecting the animals and ensuring they weren’t disturbed by our presence. Cheryl Morris

Classic Kenya 4WD Safari
The most important commodity of any safari is time, quality time in the most prolific parks like Nakuru and the fabled grasslands of the Masai Mara. Add to the cocktail a smart tented camp, four wheel drive vehicles and very experienced guides and you have a week that will feel like a month.

Kenya & Tanzania Adventure
Any safari that includes the incredible parks and reserves of the Serengeti, Masai Mara, Nakuru and Ngorongoro Crater is to be taken seriously. By including those first two, the migration is covered on both sides of the border and if the lure of 1.5 million ruminants is overwhelming, a few days on the exotic palm-fringed island of Zanzibar is sure to lower the heart rate.

Serengeti Spectacular The mantra of the Safari Collection of ‘quality time in the most fertile areas’ is never more pertinent than in Tanzania. Too often safaris waste valuable time en route somewhere, but are rarely in the teeth of the action. This visceral and indeed sometimes violent action is centred around the fabled granite kopjes of the central Serengeti. These are often predator-occupied: timeless sentinels to the vast herds teeming below. Exclusive camps, excellent vehicles and several million ruminants with almost all of the time maximised in the conservation areas; there is nothing like it.

Highlights of Madagascar
Madagascar is much more than big box-office cartoons. The remote location, lack of predators and varied ecosystem has allowed endemic flora and fauna to flourish. At least 80% of its species cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Perhaps the most talked about is the lemur, with close to 70 different species recorded. As well as searching for these enchanting creatures, enjoy the rainforest, mountains, desert and breathtaking coastline.

In Search of the Snow Leopard Planet Earth II may have seduced many more armchair fans, but to see a Snow leopard high in Ladakh is close to wildlife nirvana. Inhabiting some of the most remote and mountainous regions of Central Asia, the mission to see this enigmatic cat is really more of a pilgrimage. Other rare high altitude wildlife and isolated Himalayan Buddhist communities only add to this quest’s allure.

Blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, congregate off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Seen from a privately chartered boat this is a marine spectacle without parallel. Further inland elephant herds gather in Udawalawe and the elusive leopard rules in Yala. As well as the steamy Sinharaja Rainforest, enjoy the south coast where the warm waters of the Indian Ocean lap the shore and days can easily drift by from the shade of a palm tree.

Scarlet macaws rule the roost adding brilliant flashes of red, blue and gold to the foliage; Humpback whales breed in the waters off-shore, and sloths lazily crawl along cecropia branches.

Discover Costa Rica
Costa Rica is renowned for having proportionately more protected land than any other country, making it ripe for wildlife tourism. What is less known is the marvellous, often bizarre variety of animals from catatonic sloths, screaming Howler monkeys, screeching toucans and nesting Green turtles. Throw in the Caribbean and Pacific coastlines and it is easy to see why so many return.

‘wild’ in the trip title relates not only “The to the wildlife, which is the main focus of the trip, but also to the locations of the lodges and hotels, chosen to be in spectacular and often remote areas.
Fenella Jackson
”
Natural Highlights of Costa Rica Costa Rica has more birds than North America, Europe and Australia put together. It also has more land devoted to National Parks than anywhere else in the world. It is Exodus’ most popular wildlife destination, with good reason. Columbus christened it the ‘Rich Coast’ when he discovered it in 1502 - he was right.

Galapagos Wildlife Cruise The extraordinary archipelago of the Galapagos left a lasting impression on Darwin and is likely to do the same for you. An enchanted world, characterised by stark lava fields, cactus forests, volcanic craters, mangrove lagoons and turquoise waters. Step over snoozing sea lions, watch the courting rituals of Blue-footed boobies or snorkel with turtles, sharks and rays. Comfort levels have drastically improved since Mr Darwin but the thrills he must have felt certainly remain.

sheer rawness of the Canadian “The Arctic with its imposing granite cliffs,
fierce winds and dramatic landscapes felt every bit as wild as the Arctic should. Compared with this, Greenland seemed like another world with its picturesque villages and icescapes more suited to Antarctica. Late season travel gave some wonderful sunrises, sunsets and clear night skies - a genuinely breathtaking display of auroras that words could never give justice to.

These two sometime friends have travelled extensively together. Both are superb photographers with different approaches, both equally passionate and outspoken about conservation, wildlife and taking pictures. Neither are short of people who disagree with them and understand that their Marmite approach is not everyone’s cup of tea. However, in terms of inspiring photographers and faunal fans to improve their work and knowledge there are few better. One last thing: they both adore the fertile shores of South Georgia unlike anywhere else on the planet.

This special charter uses direct flights to Santiago and then a non-stop service to Mt Pleasant. This expedition will maximise every daylight hour amongst the huge penguin rookeries, hanging glaciers and battling elephant seals, to say nothing of the history of exploration. Small Ships Make the Difference
The key to really making the most of your time in Polar waters is to ensure maximum shore and Zodiac time. Ships with more than 200 passengers often find their landing sites are limited, and the logistics of disembarking the ship’s complement into Zodiacs can be slow. Our small expedition ships generally offer twice daily ‘off-ship’ activities – both morning and afternoon – with waiting time being almost non-existent.
Ship Specifications 76

Akademik Ioffe
RCGS Resolute
Ocean Adventurer
World Explorer
Finnish-built for the Russian Academy of Science, this ship was designed to travel quietly during hydro-acoustic research. External stabilisers and a built-in trimming system provide exceptional stability. She has an icestrengthened hull and a cruising speed in open water of 14.5 knots.
The Ioffe was built for the Russian Academy of Science to the same specifications as the Vavilov. All cabins have exterior views and she has plenty of open deck space. Facilities on board include a bar, sauna and plunge pool, as well as a library and a presentation room for wildlife talks and briefings.
Designed for comfort, RCGS Resolute is modern, well appointed, safe and ice-strengthened. Two separate bar and lounge areas feature 180-degree views with ample open seating. Other facilities include a theatre-style presentation room, gymnasium, wellness centre, hot water spa, sauna, steam room and salt water pool.
The Ocean Adventurer was built in 1976 and underwent refurbishments in 1999 and 2002 with the most significant being in 2017. She has a reputation as a well-appointed and elegant expedition ship. She offers fine dining and en suite cabins with exterior views.
The World Explorer is distinct and comfortable, refined and spacious. Every cabin has either a private walk-out or Juliet balcony for direct ocean views. There are also plenty of public areas, including the glass-domed Observation Lounge with full skyline views, and a dedicated lecture theatre for presentations.

Key Booking Information Having chosen the holiday you are interested in, below is some information which you may find useful in relation to your booking and holiday. Full terms and conditions can be found at: www.exodus.co.uk/about-exodus/exodusbookingconditions. 1. Refer to the Trip Notes The Trip Notes form part of our contract with you and they contain the most up-to-date information about theholiday, including details about the itinerary, inclusions and exclusions. Please download and take the latest version of the Trip Notes with you on your holiday. 2. About the trip Is this trip for you?
Participation We ask our clients to always abide by the authority of the tour leader. There is an agreement in place between Exodus and our tour leaders, allowing them to exclude any client from part or all of a trip if it unfortunately becomes apparent that they cannot manage particular elements of a trip or is likely to put either them self or other people at risk. It is, however, not a decision that is reached lightly or that is made frequently. Pre-existing medical conditions We ask you to let us know of any pre-existing conditions, illnesses, disabilities or recent surgeries which may affect your safety or other people’s enjoyment of the holiday. Please email CustomerServices@exodus.co.uk to make us aware of any preexisting medical conditions. Our Trip Notes provide information on whether a particular holiday is considered to be suitable for a person with reduced mobility. There is no upper age limit on our tours, but as most holidays are quite active we may ask clients over the age of 80 a number of questions about their health and fitness. We also require you to advise us of any dietary requirements in advance of a tour. Accommodation Our prices are based on twin-share accommodation which means that if you book on your own, we will arrange for you to share with a person of the same sex. We ask you to satisfy yourself that you do not have any conditions or preferences For full booking conditions please visit exodus.co.uk
Key information to help you prepare Important trip documentation will be provided during the booking process and prior to your holiday. If you have any queries or notice any inaccuracies, please contact Exodus as soon as possible. We are able to provide basic advice to clients regarding passports and visa requirements, but you should check with the appropriate embassy, consulate or the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the exact requirements for your chosen tour and date of travel. British nationals require a full passport which is valid for six months after the date of your scheduled return home. The Trip Notes for each holiday provide more detailed information on visa requirements. We recommend that you contact your Medical Professional or a Travel Health Clinic for information about vaccinations or specific health risks in the area to which you are travelling. Please see the Practical Information section of the Trip Notes for information relating to vaccinations for your specific tour. If you are from an EU member state and are travelling within Europe, you should enquire about the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); this gives a certain degree of free medical care in many European countries but should not be considered a substitute for travel insurance. The Trip Notes also include information about packing suggestions and essential items that we recommend you bring on your holiday.
3. Booking on a Flight Inclusive or Land Only Basis Exodus holidays can be booked on a Land Only basis or with international flights. When booking on a Flight Inclusive basis, Exodus complies with our responsibilities under the ATOL regime. For all packages (Flight Inclusive or not) we comply with the Package Travel and Linked Travel Regulations 2018. In the event of a significant change to travel plans by an airline, we are responsible for ensuring that you can complete your journeys in a reasonable timeframe and without additional cost to yourself. Please see point 6 for more information on the Package Travel Regulations. Flight costs and supplements Flight Inclusive prices include return flights from a London airport and UK departure tax. Our Flight Inclusive trip prices include a base price for the flights, however this is always subject to availability at the time of booking as airfares are outside of our control. Where the cost of flights is higher than this base price, a flight supplement may be applicable; your sales consultant will be able to advise you if this is the case. Transfers If you are travelling on the designated group flights, return airport transfers will be included at the destination. If you are travelling on non-group flights, airport transfers may be at an additional cost unless shown in your documentation as a free or included transfer; please ask your sales consultant for transfer details during the booking process. If you book on a Land Only basis, services start and end at the local joining point detailed in your documentation.
Risks of adventure travel
4. How to book
Whilst we ensure that all activities are operated to the local legal standard and that risk assessments are carried out annually, many of our holidays do carry an element of risk. On many of our tours, the areas are remote and events far less predictable than on a conventional holiday. Health, safety and operational standards, particularly of hotels and transport, are often not up to the levels we experience at home. We require that all the properties and transport we use comply fully with local regulations, but we do not guarantee the same standards as in your home country. If you choose to travel on this type of holiday, you must be prepared to accept that this is all part of the experience. Adverse weather conditions, political situations and a host of other uncontrollable factors can mean a change in itinerary. Outdoor activities are weather dependent to an extent and some can become dangerous in certain conditions. If the leader feels there is any heightened level of risk involved in an activity, they may amend or cancel it as they see fit. It is unlikely that an itinerary would be substantially altered, but if changes are necessary, we will make the best possible alternative arrangements which maintain the integrity of the original itinerary. We will do everything we can to minimise the effect, but we cannot be held responsible for the impact of changes outside our control. Crime and other security risks exist in all countries and whilst travelling in a group is a safeguard, it is not a guarantee of safety. We will take all reasonable care of you and expect that you will take sensible precautions yourself.
If you would like to make a booking you can contact us in several ways: directly over the telephone (020 8712 3164), by email using Sales@exodus.co.uk, via our website www.exodus. co.uk and the Live Chat function on our website, or through an approved travel agent.
(minimum ÂŁ150 per person or equivalent). You may also be required to pay on booking for any non-transferable and nonrefundable items; your sales consultant will advise you of this during the booking process. Please note that for certain travel arrangements, including all polar voyages, the deposit may be higher than those shown. Final balance We will invoice you for the remainder of the cost of your holiday, which must be paid prior to 56 days before departure. In certain cases, we may request full payment more than 56 days before departure where, for example, airlines require full payment on booking. Making changes to your trip Please contact Exodus as soon possible if you wish to make a change to your existing booking, wish to change to a different tour or wish to change departure date. We will always endeavour to assist with the requested change, but this is subject to availability and payment may need to be made for non-refundable costs (for example from airlines) and other fees may also be applicable. Cancellation conditions You may cancel your tour at any time by providing written communication from the lead booker. As we start to incur costs from the time the contract is confirmed we will retain your deposit and will apply other cancellation charges as shown below. Please note, however, that for certain travel arrangements, including all polar voyages, the cancellation charge may be higher than those shown; please ask your sales consultant for full details of cancellation charges at time of booking. Period before scheduled departure date when notice of cancellation is received

It is an essential condition of joining an Exodus trip that you have an adequate and valid travel insurance policy for the full duration of your trip to cover the cost of medical treatment, cancellation and curtailment, and the activities included in the holiday (including the maximum altitude reached). We recommend that you take out insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed.
