Intrepid
Every Intrepid adventure starts with curiosity. A desire to understand, to learn something new, to challenge beliefs and push boundaries. To switch on our out-of-office alerts, to say farewell to daily routines, to have fun. For some, being Intrepid means trying a dish they can’t pronounce, or learning the salsa in a Cuban bar. It’s climbing a mountain, or an encounter with a silverback gorilla. For others, it’s packing for a solo adventure, getting out of that bubble of familiarity, and making new friends in all corners of the globe. Whether you’ve been travelling for years or you’ve never left home, we want to lead you to those moments of discovery, to satisfy that curiosity, to be Intrepid. Because now, more than ever, the world needs more Intrepid people.
01
Why
We run thousands of trips in a range of styles and visit every continent on earth. And we do it all with our signature attention to detail and passion for real life experiences. Our destination experts are constantly scouring the globe for sights and experiences to share – so you can discover your new favourite place, or explore a guidebook staple from a new perspective.

Get ready to go beyond the main streets and into the heart of a destination. Travelling with our expert local leaders means you can focus on being in the moment instead of worrying about missing the last train out of town or where you can safely stroll. It’s adventure travel with all the boring details taken care of, guided by a local who wants to bring you into their world.
We know this is your trip of a lifetime, and we’re committed to making it unforgettable. Our itineraries strike the perfect balance between the structured and the spontaneous, with a focus on experiences only made possible when you’re travelling with a local leader. You want freedom and flexibility as well as the highlights – that’s why we craft tours that give you both. Agra, India

Smaller groups

3 Africa & the Middle East
Our groups are perfectly sized – on average, just ten travellers – to let you feel like you’re exploring a destination independently, but big enough to create a good social vibe. Whether it’s swapping stories at a local homestay, sharing a table at a hole-in-thewall restaurant, or enjoying a drink at the end of a jam-packed day, our small group size opens up big opportunities the larger groups can only dream of.
05
We know our travellers care about the world as much as we do. From a meal made with produce grown on a family-run farm to learning how to basket-weave in a small village that’s home to a communitybased tourism project, when you travel with us you know that your journey is giving back. Don’t just take our word for it – as the world’s biggest travel B Corp, we follow strict ethical standards on sustainability, supply chains and social responsibility. Myaing, Myanmar

Wherever possible, we do things the local way – including transport. It’s better for the environment and a great way to immerse yourself in another culture. From gliding through the backwaters of Kerala in a pole boat, to zipping through Tochigi on a bullet train, we choose ways to get you there that take you deeper.
the bustle of a Marrakech souk or a quiet village along the Mekong Delta. These experiences are raw, authentic and totally unforgettable.
Authentic food We know that food while you travel is more than fuel, and our trips include meals that enhance your adventure and give you a taste of the local flavours. Think a traditional Khmer dinner in the grounds of a Cambodian temple, or a hearty dinner with an Amish family in Berlin, Ohio.
Halong Bay junk boat, Vietnam
STAY REAL We think where you lay your head can be just as immersive as what you see in the day. Like spending the night at a 17th-century Rajasthani castle or a gite in the High Atlas Mountains. No matter where we stay, we always choose locally run accommodation.
The Nile, Egypt
Local connections
Rabat, Morocco
By sharing laughter, stories and adventures with local people, you’ll learn about different ways of life. More importantly, you’ll find common ground. We believe you’ll learn more sharing a meal in a small community in Vietnam’s Da Bac or staying in a Nepalese village recovering from the 2015 earthquake, than wearing a headset and following a flag.
The iconic and the unexpected Sure, the first time you look at a famous monument is incredible, but so is finding yourself in the middle of a village football game or sharing a laugh with a market vendor. Our trips combine the iconic with the unexpected to give you genuine insight into local life.

Whether she’s taking travellers to the best pad ka prow stall in Bangkok or the floating markets of Amphawa, Sasha helps people really connect with Thailand with her signature warmth and local knowledge. What matters most to Sasha is being kind and open, having fun, and providing her groups with an awesome experience of Thailand.
Ankita INDIA
She’s a friend and a translator, a problem-solver and that allimportant link between being a traveller and a local. And while she loves being able to travel all over India, Ankita’s favourite thing about leading for Intrepid is meeting new people and having different conversations every day. Her other fave thing? Introducing travellers to her most-loved Indian food: vegetarian thalis, a platter made up of curries, pickles, rice and bread (and watching them try to finish it!).

7 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AN ADVENTURE IN NAMIBIA An adventure in Namibia, the sparsely populated and exceptionally photogenic country on Africa’s south-west coast, is one of the most incredible travel experiences on earth. Expect epic landscapes, amazing wildlife, rich culture and welcoming locals, but there are a few other important things about travel in Namibia to keep in mind. Intrepid leader Johannes Lekoloane spills the beans on what to know before you go. 1. You’ll be getting around in an overland truck Not quite a bus, not quite a van, these trucks are custom-built for off-track adventures – and navigating some seriously bumpy roads. how to choose your ideal african safari destination Fancy taking a walk on the wild side? An African safari offers up the ideal opportunity to get closer to the animals that fascinate us most. But with so many different reserves and parks to pick from, how do you go about deciding on the right one for you? Obviously, it’ll depend on several factors like which species you’re wanting to see, the sorts of landscapes you’re intrigued by, the activities you’re desperate to try and, of course, when you’re looking to go. So, to help you choose, here’s a detailed rundown of six of the best safari spots across Africa. Search ’ideal safari’ at intrepidtravel.com/adventures to read more
25 south africa trip photos that will convince you to visit There’s some pretty famous road trips out there: California’s Pacific Coast Highway, Iceland’s Ring Road, Australia’s Great Ocean Road… but if you haven’t driven South Africa’s Garden Route, you haven’t seen the best of ’em. This beautiful route – from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth – encompasses everything from white-sand beaches to mountain passes to endless vineyards. And it’s so special that it serves as the inspiration for Intrepid’s 14-day Garden Route Adventure. Though the trip encompasses wildlife aplenty (and lots of scenic camping – you have been warned!), it shows just how much more there is to South Africa than safari. East Africa KENYA, TANZANIA
A herd of giraffes migrating across the golden savanna. The clouded plateau of Mt Kilimanjaro. The striking red dress of the Maasai tribespeople. These iconic images of East Africa seem almost fantastical, caught between imagination and storybook dreams, but let us assure you – this wondrous place is definitely real. See, hear and feel this diverse landscape of soaring mountains, gorilla-filled jungles, vibrant blue coastlines and open plains. It’s a land that must be experienced to be believed.

East Africa Great Migration Map
C
Each year, the great migration of nearly two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles – driven north and back again by shifts in rainfall – turns the plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara into a theatre like no other. This phenomenon is part of an annual cycle in the region, and can be seen year-round as herds move in a constant clockwise circle. The calving season takes place in the southern Serengeti between January and mid-March, before the migration starts to head west in June. Herds tend to arrive in the Masai Mara in August and remain until November. It’s important to note that this is a guide only, as no year is exactly the same as the last.

Volcanoes National Park and in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The trekking can be wet and muddy – this is the rainforest after all – but your efforts will make the experience all the more special. See intrepidtravel.com/gorilla-trekking to find out more.
You’ll be accompanied on your trek by expert local guides and rangers who’ll brief you on what to expect and how to act around the gorillas.
Once you’ve reached a gorilla family, you’ll have one unforgettable hour with them. You’ll be able to watch the family as they go about their routines of feeding, preening, playing and snoozing.
Can’t imagine one hour will be enough? There is the option to purchase a permit for another day’s trekking – advanced booking is recommended.
The location of gorilla families is constantly monitored to ensure you have the best chance of finding them. Expert local trackers set out each morning to radio a location to your guide.
Gorilla trekking is best between January– February and June– September. However, the low seasons benefit from fewer tourists and permits are easier to get. Only eight permits are issued per group, so the time you spend with the gorillas is sure to be special. No other groups will be around while you’re with them.
what to pack
KENYA, UGANDA
You don’t need to be an athlete, but you do need to come prepared to hike up and down hills. If you’re worried about your fitness, perhaps hire a porter to carry your bag and help you up the steep parts.

MAX GROUP SIZE 22 Insect repellent: Alongside the gorillas and other animals, the jungle is home to many creepy crawlies, so make sure you enjoy this trek scratch-free.
Long pants and shirts: It’s best not to expose too much skin during the trek. Wear long sleeves and tuck your trousers into your socks to prevent safari ants from getting in.
Extra batteries: The trackers can’t guarantee how long you’ll spend trekking before you encounter the gorillas. Make sure you bring spare camera batteries to last the full day.
A light rain jacket: Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park are both tropical rainforests, so there’s a good chance of rain year-round.
Water: It can get hot and humid in the mountains. Bring along a bottle of water – preferably a reusable bottle.
A pair of gardening gloves: Sounds weird, but they’ll stop your hands from getting scratched when grabbing branches and vines.
Energy snacks: The trekking can be tough. Pack a few snacks like chocolate or muesli bars to help you power through.

Embrace the road less travelled in Africa’s east. Ethiopia’s tourism industry still pales in comparison to many of its neighbours, a fact that those who have experienced its ancient rock-hewn churches, 500-year-old monastery islands and the majestic Simien Mountains may struggle to understand. Perched on Ethiopia’s shoulder, Djibouti is sure to reward intrepid travellers with its limestone chimneys, volcanoes, saline lakes and old-world towns.

Okavango Experience
Southern Africa overflows with the unforgettable. The wildlife-spotting is worldclass – from the unrivalled diversity of Kruger and the elephants of Chobe to the wild herds of Swaziland – while the range of environments is mind-boggling. Trudge up the vast desert dunes of Namibia, whip along the wild coastline of South Africa by bike or navigate the inland lagoons of the Okavango Delta. In this part of Africa, the ways to explore are as varied as the landscape itself.

madagascar MADAGASCAR
A few hundred clicks off East Africa’s coastline sits an island whose very name, thanks in part to a certain animated movie, summons to mind all sorts of fantastical creatures: leaping lemurs, flat‑tailed geckos, iridescent chameleons, freaky-looking aye-ayes and – most amusing of all – the dancing sifaka. Off the silver screen, Madagascar is just as magical. This is a land of pristine rainforests, shipwreck-dotted coastlines, mist-cloaked mountains, chubby baobab trees and some famously friendly locals.
