Neighborhood

of FIELDS Dreams

W

hat if your kids could bike or walk to soccer practice? What if you could get to the field on your golf cart instead of fighting rush hour traffic?

Alleviating evening traffic woes and making athletic practice more convenient for parents and children is the idea behind turning neighborhood green spaces into sports practice fields. Last year Town Councilman Gary Santos approached the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department with the idea of using neighborhood common areas and green spaces as practice fields for children under 8 years old, explained Jimmy Millar, deputy director of recreation for the Town of Mount Pleasant.

“The concept makes complete sense … It’s just a matter of facilitating it the right way.” – Jimmy Millar,

by Holly Fisher

These neighborhood fields don’t need to be as large as standard fields because they will be used mostly for young athletes under the age of 8. They don’t need a whole field, Millar said, they just need space to run around. Currently the Recreation Department typically groups children together based on their school or neighborhood so they’re practicing as close to their home as possible and with other children they know. But parents know even a short drive down the road can turn into a long drive when it’s peak drive time.

“We want kids to be able to have recreation activities in their neighborhood while also reducing drive times for parents,” Millar said. “Even if it’s 10 cars, it helps.” Anyone interested in having a practice space in their neighborhood can contact Jimmy Millar at 843-884-2528 or jmillar@tompsc.com.

Town of Mount Pleasant Deputy Director of Recreation

Neighborhoods with a potential practice field can get in touch with Millar who will visit the site to ensure it’s a useable and safe space for children. Then it would be up to the neighborhood or homeowners’ association to approve the town’s use of the space. “That’s one of the challenges. It’s important to have the support of the entire neighborhood community, not just a few parents,” Millar said. The town wouldn’t pay for the use of the green space, but it would have a town employee present at practices in case of any problems or injuries — just as they do at town-owned fields.

Rolling out

NEWSports 4-Year Olds

O

by Holly Fisher ver the last five years, Mount Pleasant parents have been asking for athletic programs for their 4-yearold children. This fall, they’ll see the first offerings in fundamental sports for preschoolers.

Coming first in the fall is a 4-year-old soccer program, and then T-ball will be available starting spring 2019. Garrett Heatherington, athletic coordinator/fundamentals for the Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation Department, said the department has long had camps and swimming lessons available to 4-year-olds, but no organized sports options. To accommodate the new offerings, T-ball will be offered for ages 4 and 5, while children ages 6 and 7 will join the coach pitch team. The 8-year-old players will move into an older kid pitch league. This fall, little players will be able to don a jersey and learn the basics of soccer – one of the sports in high demand among parents of 4-year-olds, Heatherington said. Jimmy Millar, deputy director of recreation, said soccer and T-ball are the easiest ones to offer first. Young children don’t have to learn all the ins and outs of soccer and baseball. It’s more about the exercise and camaraderie, Millar said.

For soccer, the fields are smaller and practice times are shorter to accommodate short attention spans. Even if the kids just learn to run and kick the ball, they’ve developed a skill for when they join the 5-year-old program, Millar said.

“A lot of rec departments around the country do this,” Millar said. “For those sports where we can do it, I think the kids will get a lot out of it.”

“It’s good we have these programs so kids can get out and stay active. The earlier we start, the better.” – Garrett Heatherington, Town of Mount Pleasant Athletic Coordinator

While meeting parents’ requests for 4-year-old fundamental sports, Heatherington said it’s also beneficial to introduce children to physical activity at an early age. “Offering all these different sports programs for kids is a great thing,” he said. “Kids are always on their phones, watching TV and constantly inside. It’s good we have these programs, so kids can get out and stay active. The earlier we start, the better.”

“In T-ball, they just hit the ball and run,” he said. “Some run to third base instead of first, but it’s just about having fun.”

evin Mitchell played basketball when he was young and into his high school years. But, as it does, adult life often takes people away from the pastimes of their youth. So when Mitchell was looking for something fun to do over the winter and a way to give back, he decided to coach youth basketball.

“It helped me reconnect with the sport,” he said. “I really enjoyed it.” Plus, coaching eighth-grade boys’ basketball was a nice change of pace for Mitchell, who has been an engineer with the Town of Mount Pleasant Planning & Development Department for the last 18 years.

“It’s definitely rewarding. I’m helping out the community and I feel like it’s something other people can look at as a way to give back. I really did enjoy it.” – Andrew Dolan, Town of Mount Pleasant Public Services Department Executive Office Manager

Mitchell laughed that his layup was a little rusty, but that’s the good thing about being a volunteer coach — professional athletic experience isn’t required. Volunteer coaches need to know the fundamentals of the sport and approach weekly practices with the idea of keeping all the players engaged, he said. The goal, he said, is to coach the team as a whole, not individual players. Andrew Dolan saw the evidence of building a solid team play out as he coached girls’ soccer. “I like seeing how they progress as a person and a player,” he said. “Those relationships form and you see them grow, and, at the end of the season, they’re best friends.” Dolan and his wife moved to Mount Pleasant more than a year 22 | IN MOTION MOUNT PLEASANT RECREATION MAGAZINE

ago from Houston. He works as the executive office manager for the Town of Mount Pleasant Public Services Department. When Dolan heard the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department was in need of volunteer coaches, he quickly stepped up. “It gives me something to do outside of work,” he said. Dolan played soccer growing up and eventually was a kicker on the football team at Nicholls State University in Louisiana. Sports have always been an important part of Dolan’s life so he was eager to help young athletes — in this case, 8- and 9-year-old girls. “It was fun getting yelled at by 10 9-year-olds all wanting to play offense,” he laughed. Dolan is hoping to coach again as a way to benefit himself and the community. “It’s definitely rewarding. I’m helping out the community and I feel like it’s something other people can look at as a way to give back,” he said. “I really did enjoy it.” Mitchell said he would recommend volunteering to anyone who wants to reconnect with a sport they grew up playing. And with weekly practices, it’s not a large time commitment - yet the kids are grateful. “The kids knew I was volunteering. They knew they needed a coach, and I could tell they appreciated me coming out and helping,” he said. “They knew I was volunteering my own spare time, and they appreciated that.”
