We’ll get you started with the basics, from fashionable beach essentials to hotter-than-the-sun gadgets to inspire your packing. Beachwear designer Adam Brown unveils his recent collection for the dapper men and our sentimental cover and fashion editorial will remind you of that one summer. Only this time, you’ll look back with a smile and look forward to the hotter moments ahead. Beach bag in tow, get ready to comb through our handpicked island and beach destinations, 20 in all, to give you a bewildering array of sun-drenched journeys. Next, we take you to Maldives, my perennial favourite, as I was again captivated by its beauty during my trip last November. Alternatively, should you crave for some beach indulgence with a Latin vibe, our travel guide will take you to Brazil’s celebrated and unchartered shores. If you’re looking to purchase your own island, read on as illusionist David Copperfield shares no tricks but all tips to owning your private isle or in his case, a set of 11 stunning isles in The Bahamas. We also introduce two private islands, which have placed the Philippines on the map of luxury travel. Its next-door neighbors Phuket and Hong Kong also invite for a weekend of beach bumming and fine dining. It’s time to break off from your desks and deadlines, dash to the sands and make this season not only a summer to remember, but one you’ll never forget.

THE JETTY LouNGE DUBAI Chic Arabian architecture is given a modern twist at The Jetty Lounge, a stylish watering hole that spills out to the shore adjacent the One&Only Royal Mirage in Dubai. At night, low lighting in both warm and cool tones creates the laid-back mood within the bar’s indoor areas. The intimate atmosphere extends to the sandy beachfront spaces dotted by sofas and chaise lounges, but the presence of palm trees infuses a wonderful tropical feel to this part of the bar. It’s a unique beachside spot where formal footwear tends to outnumber flip-flops, especially as the night goes deeper. Comfortably settled in the couches and sharing lively conversations with companions, seasoned travellers and local corporate citizens flock The Jetty Lounge to unwind. And who wouldn’t want to chill out in such a cosy place? A day’s worth of work or leisure deserves to be topped off with casual chatter fuelled by sumptuous drinks. Among the most popular cocktails that you must try are the Schooner, a vodka-based mojito mixed with limoncello; and the Sloop, a bold blend of gin, rum, triple sec and passion fruit. Down your drinks between nibbles of tapas-style dishes to make your beach-in-the-city downtime all the more delectable.

Any beachcomber who longs for the strong, aromatic flavours of Greek cuisine will find the island of Mykonos twice as divine as it already is with the abundance of eateries dotting its beaches. Standing out among a stretch of tavernas is Kuzina, a hip, waterfront restaurant at the Ammos Hotel. It may just be one of the most fashionable spots on the island, but the atmosphere remains convivial. The place exudes beach casualness with a subtle urban flair. One of the cushioned wooden benches on the sand would be your idyllic spot from which to observe the unrelenting beauty of Ornos Beach. The same outdoor area may also serve as the venue of your own beach party. With a team led by seasoned chef Aris Tsanaklidis, the menu is an experimental take on Mediterranean food juxtaposed with a good helping of Asian delicacies. The ingredients, vibrant in colour and rich in natural taste as with most quintessentially Greek dishes, make for refreshing salads that are most welcome after some sunning. Also not to be missed is the Calamari Cooked in the Wok with Ginger and Chili (USD 20) to start you off with a nice kick. The chef’s signature creation, Dumplings Filled with Feta Cheese Mousse, Spearmint and Pomegranate Sauce (USD 18), is another hit that very well represents the gastronomic best of two continents.

Magic

Man

David Copperfield, the legendary illusionist who has amazed the world over, has taken his magical touch beyond the stage to make anyone’s imagination of paradise come to reality. He takes a break from his busy Vegas stint to chat with SJ Roxas and reveal the many tricks up his sleeve. Your career has brought you to many places. What do you love about getting to travel as much as you do? You know, I travel for work, but I usually only work at night, so it allows me to explore the city that I’m in the rest of the time. I’m like a sponge because I absorb a lot of ideas during my trips. One of the best things about getting to travel like I do, is that I get exposed to the best of the world and I remember them later on and I draw inspiration from these ideas. Every single thing is important; how a towel feels against your skin, how it absorbs moisture. If there’s anything I love in the room when I’m in a hotel, trust me, I’ll take a picture or write it down so I can use it for what I’m doing. It’s also about getting to feel like a kid as I discover new things. That feeling really makes me happy.

You’ve earned countless accolades including numerous Emmys and several world records, is there anything else you’d like to achieve in your career? I love longevity. Longevity is good. I’m doing good work and I like reinventing myself and what I’m doing. I appreciate the honours and awards, I’m very grateful, but these achievements should not make you complacent. You should strive to be even better and that’s what I’m trying to do.

36 | TRAVELITE

Did you always dream of getting your own island? How did your interest start? I’ve always loved the idea. It’s a crazy idea. There’s a lot that had to be done and I’ve looked for decades until I found the perfect place. Musha Cay is a special place and for the past six years, we’ve been reinventing it, so it continues to evolve.

It has been said that you chose Musha Cay because it’s the intersection between the statues of Easter Island, Stonehenge, the Pyramid of the Sun in the Yucatan and the Pyramid of Giza. Is this true? Yes, that’s part of it. But aside from that, it’s just really beautiful. It’s a place that when the astronauts travel around the world, they see it as one of the most beautiful places on earth from that vantage point. If you check Google maps, it’s the same case – it looks fantastic even when viewed from the sky.

What sort of magical experience can guests expect when staying in Musha Cay? There are so many. There are trained birds that fly all over the island to gather waste for recycling. There are also tortoises that live around the area. The thriving wildlife there is a major attraction that guests can’t enjoy elsewhere. In fact, some toucans just laid eggs recently and that’s something really precious to be able to witness. Also, there are secret villages there that I know people will find really fascinating.

“One of the best things about getting to travel like I do, is that I get exposed to the best of the world and I remember them later on and I draw inspiration from these ideas.” Out of all 11 islands, do you have a favourite? Which one and why? Every island is special, but Musha Cay has all the infrastructure. There’s also a two-mile sand bar that seems to go on and on with nothing much but sand. Imagine that! And the great thing is that guests can have the islands all to themselves.

What’s the best thing about owning your own island, or in your case, group of islands? What’s the downside if there’s any? The best thing is getting to do whatever you want with it. It’s an open palette. Whatever I like, I try to put it on the island so I can share it with our guests. But there’s a lot of responsibility involved. You have to have a great, trustworthy staff who can handle everything.

What tips would you give to those aspiring to buy their own island? Be careful what you wish for! Like I said, it’s a lot of responsibility so be ready. Aside from the island, you also have to take care of the transportation, which means you have to have a boat or a plane. It’s a lot, but if you really want it, then it’s worth all the hard work.

What’s your favourite vacation destination besides the Bahamas? It would have to be Bali. It has influenced Musha Cay as evident in the designs. I also like Fiji, but Bali is really different. It’s such a wonderful place.

ARTS & DESIGN

Have Art, Will Travel Head Curator of Bleecker Street Arts Club and Winston Art Group Consultant Jessica Hodin explores the art world’s foray into globalisation. It is clearer now, more than ever before, how global the contemporary art market and its participants have become.

At the time of

writing this article, The Armory Show and ADAA (Art Dealers Association of America) Art Show are being held in New York City, the London-based fair Freize will arrive a month and a half later, the renowned Art Basel will take place in Switzerland in June, and its newest edition, Art Basel Hong Kong just before that in May. That is not to mention the satellite fairs like Pulse, Scope, Volta, Fountain and Art Miami that follow the travelling art circuit as well. Many galleries who feel it is important to consistently attend these fairs have quite a busy travel schedule! Why have art fairs become so popular? Winston Art Group’s Contemporary Art Advisor, Kimball Higgs explains what the excitement is all about. “What they all share in common is a plethora of art and a chance to see, inspect and study, perchance to purchase. Opportunities abound to meet and greet like-minded collectors, dealers, artists and advisors – and they want to meet you too. Oh, and the parties, dinners, signings and openings can be fun, too!” Art Basel brings together over 250 of the world’s leading galleries, The Armory Show over 230, and the satellite fairs bring in hundreds more. Collectors have a chance to gain exposure to new artists and see snapshots of the contemporary art market across the world through direct contact with gallerists, institutions and other collectors.

38 | TRAVELITE

Art fairs have evolved the art market into an international place, so that an otherwise unknown and provincial artist from say, Korea or Poland, or a censored artist from China, can now become a star. Higgs believes that “Art fairs have become essential for art collectors, their advisors and all ancillary parties. In the last 20 years, the art world has expanded at an exponential rate. One of the few ways to keep current is by attending one or more of the burgeoning groups of international art fairs from Dubai, Miami or Moscow to Istanbul and Sydney.” Although the industry’s roots have spread all over the world, there is a strong community of fellow travellers visiting these fairs, participating at gallery’s booths and, lest we forget what rigorous and specialised work it takes to mount the fair, performing the necessary production services. The industry leads its participants to different parts of the world, strengthening the discourse amongst all them. Even if you are not in the art world directly, you can still be a part of the international community and engage with it just by being at the art fairs. You can do it on your home turf or make it a part of your travel schedule. So, even though the art world has become larger, it actually feels smaller because of this “biennial culture” referring to the group of people whose calendars are dictated by the plethora of art fairs, biennials, major museum shows and auctions around the world. This group of people is made up of collectors, artists, curators, dealers and the press. A common question being posited in the wake of this culture is, whether or not, in a globalised economy, we actually become more homogenous. This can be said for many industries besides art. It is an interesting irony. Does art become more regionalised as it globalises and does it highlight ethnic perspectives in comparison to one another, or does a globalised art world lose that specialisation amongst its constituents?

ARTS & DESIGN

A

rt fairs have contributed significantly to the increased globalisation of the art world and associated interdependent industries have developed concurrently so as to meet the needs of this international exchange. Art fairs have proliferated to the point where there is one happening in some far off corner of the world almost every single week. And with this boom, there has been a correlated boom in work for ancillary industries like fine art insurance and fine art shipping, businesses whose services are relied on for these fairs to materialise. Art shippers and craters play a crucial role of transporting fragile multimillion-dollar pieces around the world. Talented installers make it possible for artworks to be exhibited in far-reaching corners of the earth that an artist may never even visit. Viewers are able to engage with the artworks regardless of its point of origin and this creates a web of shared experiences, sometimes very personal, across the international art community.

Renee Valenti of art shipping and storage company Gander and White, notes that while these correlated industries are seemingly larger, they are also forging closer connections with their international counterparts. “It is without question that the art shipping industry would be affected by the growing number of art fairs. The more art fairs that pop up globally, the more imports and exports of art there are and certainly, this leads to making closer connections with shipping agents around the world. It’s nice to be able to develop these closer relationships with other shippers so that you know who you can rely on whenever something comes up in a location that your own company doesn’t service. You don’t want to just hand over a million dollar artwork to someone you’ve never worked with before.”

The fine art insurance industry has also been affected by the proliferation of international art fairs. Mary Pontillo, Vice President of DeWitt Stern Fine Art Insurance says, “Based on the many international art fairs and the increased values of artworks, some insurance companies are at their maximum with regard to the total value they can accommodate at one art fair.” She advises dealers to “Plan ahead and ensure they secure coverage for these large fairs well in advance of the fair.” The mythical notion of the lone artist working in their studio, unmarred by the outside world, is a far cry from reality. Being an artist is a profession, a business in its own right and small businesses must also adapt to the changing global economy. Ms. Valenti, also an artist herself, notes, “From an artist’s perspective, it seems the art fairs are following the lead of what has changed in the world as a whole in the past 12 years or so because of the Internet and an abundance of media exchange. The world is getting smaller, period. This includes the art world.”

She continues to impress modern art enthusiasts with her unique creative process, focused in the rework of existing objects from day-to-day life to produce a masterpiece fuelled by a natural talent for artistic expression and a passion for the arts. Her fame echoed in the art world from Europe to Asia, through the following iconic works.

Trafaria Praia at the Venice Biennale 2013 The Cacilheiro (Portuguese ferryboat) Trafaria Praia, redesigned by Joana Vasconcelos to incorporate striking elements of Portuguese culture, including an exterior decked in hand painted tiles, sets sail this year at the highly anticipated Venetian event. orn in Paris to a well-heeled family, Andrée Putman pursued a life of independence, guided by her passion for impeccable style. Gaining success as an interior and product designer, she became a household name in design-conscious circles from New York to Hong Kong. She took on a number of interior design projects from a high society clientele, designing hotels to private residences and even the chic fashion boutiques of Balenciaga, Bally, Cartier, Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler and Karl Lagerfeld. The interiors for Morgans New York Hotel in 1984 catapulted her into fame, as she managed to uphold her signature style while working on a small budget. She created a timeless space by incorporating sophisticated designs and visual effects in each of the rooms. Later on, her designs ventured into office spaces and museums, such as Bordeaux’s Contemporary Art Museum. She opened her very own studio in Paris in 1997, the Studio Putman, which has been transforming many spaces including spas, restaurants and airline lounges all over the world into stylish and functional havens. In 2005, Putman redesigned the elegant Guerlain flagship store in Champs Elysées with iconic perfume bottles and a floor-to-ceiling chandelier centrepiece. Andrée Putman believed in a simplistic approach to design, taking the fundamentals into heart. “I loathe pompous luxury. I take interest in the essential, the framework, the basic elements of things”, she once said.

business | J.P. MORGAN private bank

Asia 2013 Attractive Opportunities Supported by Improving Fundamentals J.P. Morgan Private Bank’s Fan Jiang, Chief Investment Strategist for Asia, and China Economist Dong Chen delve into the emerging markets of Asia Ex-Japan.

Asia Ex-Japan: A transformational economy in the making Like emerging markets elsewhere, Asia Ex-Japan (AEJ) is a diverse region consisting of small open economies (e.g. Singapore and Hong Kong), export dependent regimes (e.g. Korea and Taiwan), emerging economies reincarnated from Asia’s financial crisis of 1997 (e.g. Indonesia and Thailand), and home to two BRICS countries – India and China. Any generalisation across these diverse economies inevitably misses the point, but they are increasingly bounded together by intra-region trades. Since 2001 – the year when China joined WTO – intra-regional trades among AEJ economies have risen exponentially, and overshadowed the inter-regional trades between Asia and the US/Europe. China is now less of a processing intermediary between emerging Asia and developed economies, but more of an export destination for final demand. AEJ is no longer an economy in transition, but a transformational economy in the making. The region is less of a pro-cyclical trade leveraged to global economy, but more of an indigenous growth driven by domestic consumption. In fact, consumption’s contribution to AEJ growth has risen from barely 50 per cent in 2007 to over 60 per cent at present.

46 | TRAVELITE

It’s equally important to note that policymakers are now better positioned than their counterparts elsewhere in the world. Most of the Asia Ex-Japan enjoy robust external accounts and relatively under-leveraged balance sheets, which empower them ample fiscal and monetary flexibilities. There is little complacency, however, as the policymakers continue to focus on supply-side reforms. Even India has become more accommodating to foreign competition at the expense of inefficient domestic underachievers. Throughout 2012, most AEJ countries preserved growth by defusing contagion from the US and Europe, and 2013 started with cyclical recovery across the region. China’s growth may stabilise at a more modest 7 to 8 per cent range in the next few years, but the quality of growth is likely to improve as the new leaders push forward aggressive structural reforms. Other major economies – Indonesia, Korea and Thailand, for instance – saw their growth propelled by rising consumer demand. Strong income growth has also led to a construction boom in countries like the Philippines, where macro fundamentals have shown substantial improvement since 2009. With this backdrop, it’s our view that AEJ is likely to grow 6.2 to 6.4 per cent in 2013, up from 6.2 per cent in 2012, with contribution mainly coming from China, India and Indonesia. Inflation is likely to move up, but still below the peak level in 2011, with India and ASEAN the most exposed. On the currency side, we expect 2 to 7 per cent Asia FX appreciation against the Dollar, led especially by the regimes that are most exposed to quantitative easing from the developed world.

business | J.P. MORGAN private bank

Our central case scenario for AEJ equity is not only driven by an improving economic and policy environment on the macro level, but also earnings growth and relative value on the micro side. We see earnings growth as a key driver for AEJ equity in 2013. The current earnings downgrade cycle, which has gone on for more than 18 months, is showing signs of abating. As operating leverage improves, inventory cycle turns around and internal and external demand recovers, leading us to expect margins recovery in 2013. Our view is supported by the core assumptions that (1) China’s recovery should have a positive spill-over effect to the rest of Asia; (2) growth stability in the US and diminishing tail-risk in Euro zones should help Asia to consolidate downside risk; (3) mean reversion suggests return on equity in AEJ is likely to be supported at its mid-cycle level with a possible upside. AEJ now trades 12.6x earnings and 1.6x books – about 0.5 standard deviations below their historical means. Based on our earnings and valuation estimates, we expect MSCI Asia Ex-Japan to generate a total return of 9.5 to 11.5 per cent for 2013. We expect return to be back-loaded, reflecting a potentially bumpy ride into the first half as the US sorts out its fiscal issues, the peripheral Euro zone fights for its economic survivability and key Euro economies seek for their growth viability. Within the region, we expect the bulk of the return contribution coming from Northeast Asia and India, as valuation in Southeast Asia is becoming quite rich.

Possible risk scenarios Some key risks to our view include the following: • Slower than expected recovery in the US would hit Asia through trade transmission mechanism. • As Asia’s biggest export market, any event risks in Europe could also exert additional pressure on AEJ’s growth. • With the region’s output gap remaining positive, inflation pressure could be rising, as is the risk for pre-emptive policy tightening. • We assign low probability to a regionwide turmoil, but bilateral tensions between Japan and China, and Philippines /Vietnam and China could resurge to upset risk premium.

It’s quite unbelievable that it has only been six years since Adam Brown and Julia Simpson-Orlebar launched a line of men’s swimwear that would later change any gentleman’s beach wardrobe. Although Julia has decided to pursue a different venture, the two remain good friends and Adam, a trained lens man, has obviously done a great job at running the business. The brand has developed a strong following, making Orlebar Brown the swimwear du jour of male holidaymakers everywhere from St. Barth’s to the Maldives. This summer, Adam offers a wider range of tailored pieces with a collection called ‘An Englishman Abroad’. Inspired by both real and fictional characters that represent the quintessential English aesthetic, the line would please the likes of David Niven and James Bond. “Hot dusky oranges and dark greens, along with pastel pinks, yellows and spring green plus Orlebar Brown favourite bright hues are brought to life through a range of new shapes, silhouettes, fabric bases as well as graphic and photographic prints,” explains Adam. Orlebar Brown founder and creative director Adam Brown gives men more sartorial options at the beach.

54 | TRAVELITE

Adam surely knows what he’s talking about, as he himself is a seasoned traveller. In fact, it was during a party in Rajasthan when he realised the need for better swimwear for men. During his trips, there are several items that he cannot go without. “I was never one to really travel very light, I cannot pin it down to one thing, but of course it has to be a pair of OBs – either Setter or Bulldog shorts in navy will see me through the day. Add to that my iPod, a book (not reading on an iPad yet), sunscreen and travel scrabble or a pack of cards.” As for OB fans, it appears there will be more new goodies to be added in your beach bag. “It might not be this summer, but I certainly see OB working in other categories such as sunglasses, shoes and accessories”, Adam said. “Lots of plans are in the pipeline, but we obviously want to make sure we take it one step at a time and get it exactly right.”

No other summer destination is as intoxicating as Brazil, with a unique blend of cultures giving life to vibrant cities, picturesque landscapes and the world’s most impeccable beaches. A Lively Prelude in Rio

64 | TRAVELITE

Start your piping hot holiday in the ‘Marvelous City’ of Rio de Janeiro. Rio is an essential stop before heading to the outskirt beaches, allowing you to savour the city life before catapulting to secluded sandy shores. A private tour to the Christ the Redeemer statue atop the scenic Corcovado Mountain is a must, serving as an enchanting reminder that you are now officially on holiday in Brazil. This is also the best spot to stand in awe of the beautiful blend of colours as the sun fades into the mountains. Another must visit is the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, best seen up close aboard a helicopter, treating you to a bird’s-eye view of the postcardlike cityscape and glistening sands of the Copacabana beach below. As soon as you get your feet back on the ground, take a stroll along the fabled beaches of Ipanema, Leblon and Copacabana, all brimming with chic cafes, bars and shops along its shore.

The fun intensifies at night in many of Rio’s clubs and lounges. Have a taste of the exhilarating nightlife, kicking off with award-winning signature cocktails at the Baretto Londra bar in Rio’s trendy Ipanema district. Before hitting Rio’s famed samba clubs, learn the graceful moves and lively steps with private lessons at the Jaime Aroxa Samba School. Now that you can keep up with the locals, head to one of the clubs in Lapa for a merry night of drinking and dancing. For an authentic experience, reserve a table and enjoy a night of live Brazilian music and traditional samba at the Rio Scenarium, a colonial house turned club where you can drink and dance the night away.

Beach Hopping in Trancoso Lazy, sunny days in more isolated beaches await sun seekers in Trancoso, in Brazil’s southern Bahia. Your hour and a half’s flight from Rio arrives in Porto Seguro, where you will take a private speedboat transfer along the Discovery Coast en route to Trancoso, the famed playground to Brazil’s elite. The chic destination lined with designer shops and trendy cafes is the place to relax and enjoy a laid-back Brazilian beach culture. Despite it’s A-list followers, Trancoso maintained its charm as a quaint suburb and is still every bit the hippie town it once was. Explore its streets with pastelcoloured buildings and walk around the UNESCO-protected historic square known as ‘Quadrado’ with its 16th century church centrepiece overlooking the seven-mi strip of beach below. Anyone can easily get charmed with Trancoso’s semi-deserted beaches of powdery, white sand. A minimum stay of three nights is recommended, just enough for you to soak up the views, the lifestyle and unique experience in each of the town’s beaches. Start off at Trancoso’s famous Praia dos Nativos, meaning ‘local beach’, with its idyllic shore dotted with modern hotels and chic beach bars. Close to town is the Praia do Trancoso, where you can enjoy long walks from afternoon to sunset with a cocktail in hand. Within a few hour’s drive are more deserted beaches lying in the town’s north and south ends for undisturbed swimming and snorkelling.

Relaxing in Remote Corumbau The deserted shores of Corumbau is an ideal destination for the reclusive few. Locals did not name it “far from it all” for nothing, as it is truly remote, accessible by a bumpy four-hour drive from the Porto Seguro airport. The prize of reaching it is well worth the journey. With remoteness at its best, it is where you can have the most pristine of beaches all to yourself and indulge in the freshest seafood amongst endless seascapes. For a chic and convenient alternative to the gruelling road trip, take a scenic helicopter flight from Transoco and land straight into the heart of the town. There are water sports on offer, but the real treat is ultimate relaxation and unwinding with idle beachside afternoons and some morning snorkelling trips in between your stay in Corumbau. Enjoy a 10-day escape with customised itineraries from Bespoke Brazil, including VIP airport transfers, private tours with English speaking guides, five-star accommodations, helicopter tours and speedboat transfers. www.bespokebrazil.com

MESMERIsING MALDIVES The thought of burying my feet in powdery, white sand, feeling the sunshine on my face and floating on endless turquoise waters – is heaven for the beach lover that I am. My reveries are almost always made up of these, as witnessed by a long list of beach getaways I try my best to tick off year after year. One can only imagine the excitement nearing a dream trip brings, especially to a destination as heavenly as the Maldives. to-order eggs, pancakes and waffles, all served with a view of traditional dhonis floating on clear, blue waters. After a sumptuous meal, we explored the nearby pool bar with its stunning infinity pool centrepiece. While tempted to lounge by the main pool, the sun calls for a morning of tanning by the beach, and we were quick to oblige as the idyllic shore is only a few steps away from our villa! What followed were some good hours of sun-soaking amid beautiful views. When it got too hot at around noon, we cooled down in our villa’s garden-laced sundeck with our own private pool. To cool down further, we raided the mini-bar for some ice-cold beers, which we merrily enjoyed poolside. There is also a mini chiller with champagnes, a Nespresso machine, a Mac mini and a switchboard to delight guests with the ultimate

A Rustic Escape Ecstatic for more, we boarded another seaplane flight to reach the Baa Atoll, our next address in paradise. This time, the voyage is much shorter, leaving just a little room for us to wait in anticipation. Upon landing on the bright blue waters, the thatched roofs of Anantara Kihavah Villas came into view, along with the staff on the dock preparing to welcome us. Among the staff was our villa host, who gladly drove us on a buggy to our villa. We were all agog as the buggy emerged from the lush foliage surrounding the island. There is a dazzling stretch of white sand, the sea meets with the skies and a circle of water villas on stilts hover above the shimmering waters. We couldn’t contain our excitement as the door to our Over Water Pool Villa was opened. Designed to be one with the seas in a mix of Maldivian and Thai décor – it was heaven on earth. At the centre is the bedroom, surrounded by massive glass doors for constant flooding of sea views. Slide open the glass door on the left, and you’re ready to jump in your own private infinity pool; and slide the one at the foot of the bed to enjoy a deck with a swinging day bed, over-water hammocks and sun loungers. The bathroom was almost unreal – at the centre is a daybed and beside it is a glass-bottom tub, which overlooks a trio of blues made up of the pool, sea and sky. The toilet and outdoor shower had a strip of glass flooring, which at first came to me as a silly idea. But throughout our stay, we spotted some fishes and squids swimming by! We came to our senses when our villa host announced that welcome drinks are served at the deck, and he shall now prepare for our foot ritual. Our what? Yes, all guests are welcomed with a relaxing, traditional foot ritual here, while enjoying a cold drink as you take in the views. We couldn’t help but sigh and sink into paradise.

s the sun sinks, we prepared ourselves for the night’s surprises, which began with drinks at the Sky bar, one of four dining options making up the

signature Sea.Fire.Salt.Sky. complex. We started with the usual appetisers and cocktails, all very good, with a rare sighting of a stingray passing by. Next is dinner at Salt, which served exquisite dishes paired with fine wines and a selection of salt served by their in-house ‘salt sommelier’. My favourite was the truffle salt, complementing each dish very well. After a night of fine feasting, I could not imagine getting up early the next day to have breakfast. However, as it happens, no one can dare resist the lavish breakfast buffet served at Plates. You’ll be spoilt for choice from fine cheeses to homemade jams, yogurts, pastries, international specialties and even fresh juices and detoxifying smoothies. We even looked forward to the next day’s breakfast at Plates right after having our fill! We had plenty of time and energy for a morning of swimming and snorkelling around the island. What a

Waking up on our last day in Maldives was bittersweet. On one hand, we get to enjoy another breakfast at Plates and on the other, we only have a few hours before our departure. As I was about to start my lament, we got a call from the spa. I completely forgot that I booked our massages right before we leave! Our last treat was no less than an hour of tranquility at the Anantara Spa. The spa is a haven on stilts above the seas with view-flooded treatment rooms and a delightful selection of massages. The Anantara Signature Massage was a great choice, lulling us to deep relaxation with the scent of aromatic oils and views of fishes swimming through the glass panel on the treatment room’s floor. Alas, we come to an end, capping off our rendezvous in paradise with a fine lunch paired with tropical drinks at Plates. With a clink of our glasses, we bid paradise farewell hesitantly, but happily taking home a sun-kissed glow and an assortment of unforgettable memories.

Still, an enforced interruption from the 21st century is welcome for all. Reclining 180 degrees is certainly de rigueur at Naka. Celebrating local culture and natural elements, Spa Naka focuses on the key principles of health, beauty and inner peace. Encompassing a third of the resort, the spa certainly merits occupying a similar proportion of your holiday. This wellness oasis comes complete with Watsu and Kanieep pools, a vast array of treatment rooms and an ice room for those, like me, boasting the stereotypical rosy Brit-abroad-look, thanks to the effects of the Asian sun. My prematurely booked ‘hot stones’ massage was gratefully replaced by a soothing and much-needed aloe wrap on recommendation of my shocked therapist, who proceeded to ‘ooo’ her way through my treatment as she unveiled each area of overcooked flesh from under the towel. When you’re not horizontal, you’ll most likely find yourself in one of three seaside dining options: beachside in Tonsai, where the menu provides a fair selection of authentic and western cuisine; My Grill, the most elegant of the hotel’s restaurants and a welcome variation of meat and seafood complemented by an extensive wine cellar; and Z Bar, the ideal vantage point to watch the sun slip to the horizon whilst enjoying ‘interesting’ signature cocktails. As to be expected on an isolated island, repetition sets in and those seeking a little more choice are advised to journey further afield.

And exploring is certainly a worthwhile treat in these waters. Whilst the hotel’s watersports and activities are plentiful, a day out on a traditional longtail boat, island hopping between lagoons and caves among the emerald green Andaman waters is a delight to behold (speedboats and yachts are inaccessible to these treasures). The local boat skipper will ensure a trip to the infamous James Bond Island in order to secure his commission for your entrance, but be warned; overflowing with loud, obstructive, tat vendors and ‘ladyboys’, the island is no longer the serene backdrop to a James Bond villain’s lair! Instead, roam the nearby uninhabited islands and nature reserves for your very own, cooler, LeonardoDi-Caprio-à-la-The-Beach experience. The hotel’s concierges are more than eager to help plan your itinerary, but be sure to brush-up on your Thai as the staff speak limited English! This secluded paradise off the coast of Phuket might not guarantee the A-list crowd of Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island. However, if you haven’t made his guest list this year, Naka Island offers a worthy alternative as a quiet, sun-drenched island escape free of any interruption from the paparazzi!

It was another stellar dish. What better combination may there be to a Japanese egg than an Alba truffle? The mix of classic and luxe tastes of these ingredients treated by the masterful hands of a skilled chef will cause a change of heart among egg and mushroom naysayers. It was just wonderfully delicious. This was paired with the 2008 Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée. The berry, spice and dryness of the wine went in harmony with the dish.

Then came the duck foie gras with the potato medley of Annou Imo sweet potato from Japan and Meyer lemon served with duck jus and tapioca. The taste of the duck hinted of smokiness as it was steamed then barbecued. This dish was an excellent balance of potato and foie gras flavours. A 2009 Lapalu Beaujolais Villages Le Rang du Merle was served as an appropriate accompaniment. The Kagoshima Wagyu beef, found in the south of Japan, was served with oven-roasted purée of Cévennes onion braised short ribs with seasonal green leaves. The beautiful plating of this dish was as good as the balanced taste of the meat and the sugared onion combined. A 1998 Nicolas Potel Pommard 1er Cru ‘Les Bertins’ was again a good sommelier choice to complement the precious beef. At the height of my gastronomic euphoria, I noticed that the chef likes presenting an ingredient in many ways. He has masterfully done that with potatoes and onions as a repeated theme in a singular plate inspiration! Finally, a dessert of Victoria pineapple with sea salt, Espelette chilli and extra virgin olive oil caviar came. This

Every one of the staff was competent, but my favourite character was the head sommelier who would strut his stuff with flair and panache! Then of course, there’s the talented Chef Ekkebus who was gracious enough to bid us farewell. Amber was quite the experience I still relive, albeit only mentally, up to this day. Bravo! Happy to have visited, I glide through the expanse of the Hong Kong International Airport with my duty-free shopping loot. What a wonderful way to end a deliciously memorable trip. This city never disappoints. Nowadays, after my recent gastronomic interlude, more than dragons and shopping bags, I can’t help but associate Hong Kong with world-class dining.

Amazing Azimut

A harmonious “ blend of sportiness and glamour best describes the motif of the 55S’s style

The Azimut 55S is a gorgeous super yacht that delivers both in performance and style. Three Volvo IPS-1 super engines power this beautiful vessel, producing 1,305 HP of water-splashing speed. Complementing the three engines are two counter-rotating propellers. Altogether, the Volvo Penta System ensures a smooth yet amazingly fast ride, reaching speeds of up to 36 knots. The choice of glass-carbon composite and pure carbon fibre as building materials for most of the deck, deckhouse, and structural parts also contribute to the yacht’s performance as they reduce the overall weight of the hull by 10 per cent. The interior and exterior of the 55S also received a blueprint improvement both in layout and fixtures. Azimut designer Stefano Righini crowns the yacht with a sliding hard top, available in either glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) or large glass panels, giving you and your guests the luxury of enjoying the sun from the inside. Common materials, design, colours and style in both the saloon and the cockpit smoothly merge the inside and the outside spaces together, resulting in a wide space for entertaining your guests, uninterrupted bathing under the sun and enjoyment of the wonderful views. A harmonious blend of sportiness and glamour best describes the motif of the 55S’s style through the use of pronounced zebrawood and elegant buffalo grain capitonné leather. With the Azimut 55S, speed, adventure and freedom are now within your grasp, converting your fantasies of becoming your own boat’s captain into reality.

“Green” power generators such as solar panels located on top of the flybridge and hydro generators fixed in the hulls together with two 240-HP engines produce more than 20 knots of speed. Its superstructure is composed of carbon fibre and glass panels intertwined in a honeycomb design, resulting in a very rigid and strong frame, while limiting the ship’s total weight to a minimum. Both elements, the blistering speed and the prudent design, can be enjoyed at the 20 sqm cockpit, which holds a sofa for comfortable seating, sun pads for undisturbed sunbathing, and a tender garage on the aft for feet dipping. The skipper has the luxury of picking from two helm stations, giving easier sailing options and better navigation. Transparent ceilings and side windows in both the saloon and master cabin provide ample illumination and unperturbed views. A private outdoor terrace featuring your own spa pool, bar and lounge provides comfort and luxury. In terms of the interior detail, each finish, color and texture is fully customisable to suit your personal taste and preference, guided carefully by Sunreef’s designers. This option assures you that your personality is very well represented in your very own superyacht. The Sunreef 90 Ultimate promises 90 ft of pure enjoyable sailing without putting harm on Mother Nature and relinquishing neither speed nor performance.

Sporty Princess The Princess V48 is a luxury V-Class sports motor yacht offering excellent speeds, exciting manoeuvrability and lavish comfort. Activity and speed, ranging between 32 to 34 knots, are the main attributes of this playful yacht, fuelled by two Volvo IPS 600 engines producing a combined 870 MHP. All this power can easily be harnessed through the Volvo joystick control system and the power-assisted steering system, which makes turning left or right an absolute breeze. Easy manoeuvrability is also possible because the Princess is nimble and light, measuring just a little over 50 ft and having an approximate water displacement of only 17,700 kg. Once your desired destination is reached, you can slow down and enjoy the sun and the ocean by activating the large powered roof and triple sliding doors that open up the yacht’s ceiling. You can also choose to have a leisurely time down at the teak-laid transom platform in the ship’s aft, or at the bow where you and your guests can enjoy the sun. When you wish to cool down and unwind, you may head downstairs to the lower deck where the owner’s stateroom and the lower saloon are located. In terms of amenities, a speed and distance log, echo sounder with alarm and a remote control searchlight are just some of the standard equipment available in this moderne vessel. Impress your friends by riding the waves like a professional sailor easily, swiftly and stylishly in your very own Princess V48.

WATCH The concept of time was never represented more elegantly and lavishly than with these gorgeous timepieces, soon to be introduced at the prestigious Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show happening this April. WORDS BY JEHRAD DOLINO

Bi-Annual special | timepieces PART II

Breguet Type XXII 3880 Moderne ingenuity and absolute precision best describes the Type XXII 3880 ST, a reengineered, technically updated version of its 1950s predecessor, the Type XX. The 21st century version’s most unique feature is that it boasts of a 10-hertz frequency, resulting in a highly quick start function and readout response. Another great feature is the self-winding chronograph with fly back function, making it easier to utilise the timepiece’s options. The face of the watch provides a showcase of functionality, such as a second time zone and an aperture for the date at the six o’clock position, a 24hour indicator at the three o’clock position, small second on a 30-second basis at the nine o’clock position, a 30/60 seconds indicator in an aperture at the 12 o’clock position, and a half-minute totaliser at the centre. The external case of the timepiece is stainless steel, showing a 44 mm diameter face, and is held around your wrist with an integrated alligator strap.

Ulysse Nardin Carnival of Venice Minute Repeater The Ulysse Nardin Carnival of Venice is a beautiful timepiece offering brilliant engineering and stunning artistry. Its most distinctive quality is its dial, depicted by two actual statues situated in front of the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal. Each figure is wearing a mask, gracefully lifted as the minute repeater chimes its hours, quarters and minutes. Ulysee Nardin’s use of intricate animated figures as dials, or Jaquemarts, has been a rarity among manufacturers, ensuring that its wearers belong to a nonpareil class. The elaborate elements of the complicated timepiece continue in the detail of the dial by the use of a lost decorative art – the champlevé enamelling technique. This means that the figures on the face are hand chiseled and are ornamentally engraved resulting in an ultra-refined finish. The case of the limited-edition mechanical masterpiece is platinum, with the option to upgrade to 18-karat rose gold.

Zenith Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane True to its outstanding reputation of producing elaborate and meticulous pieces, the Zenith Academy introduces the Cristophe Colomb Hurricane, a movement watch primarily inspired by history and fundamentally equipped with the latest trilogy of precision technology. This trilogy comes in the form of the El Primero Movement, which delivers a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, the Marine Chronometer, the ultimate evolution of the gravity control system and finally, the FuséeChain Transmission System, provider of a constant force that results in rigorously stable amplitude throughout the running period. This attention to intricate detail translates to 939 tiny parts for the movement, gravity control and the Fusée-Chain systems all gorgeously held in an 18-carat rose gold case that measures 45 mm in diameter. Its dial is made of gold with a handcrafted guilloche design. Luxurious alligator leather with protective rubber lining straps this magnificent jewel around your wrist, held together by an 18-carat gold triple folding clasp system.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute 35 mm The oxymoronic phrase “new trademark” is an appropriate justification for Jaquet Droz’s newest timepiece that offers as a tribute to contemporary femininity. The Petite Heure Minute 35 mm is a delicate mixture of sturdiness and daintiness, attributed to the use of contrasting materials such as the strong stainless steel and the fine, blue iridescent mother of pearl. The hues of the mother of pearl change from royal blue, ultramarine, cobalt or indigo depending on the angle of viewing. Jaquet Droz’s signature, the eight stars, are carefully scattered across the dial creating a spectacular night sky like display. A hundred and sixty diamonds top the bezel of the elegant self-winding mechanical watch, which has a 68-hour power reserve. The timepiece’s elegant aesthetics and precise workmanship are testament to the manufacturer’s intention to celebrate the beauty of women.

Bi-Annual special | timepieces PART II

Blancpain Chronograph Grande Date With traditional beauty and function in its heart, the Blancpain Chronograph Grande Date boasts of possessing gorgeous accents as well as moderne functionalities. Heading the beautiful design of the movement timepiece is its mother of pearl face, stylishly fitted with two waves of 18-carat red gold topped with 17 variously sized diamonds. The 12 o’clock position holds a Roman hour and minute numeral subdial also made from mother of pearl material, while the six o’clock position features a double-disc large date display. All this gorgeous elegance is enclosed in a 38.6 mm diameter casing, also made from 18-carat red gold and is frosted with a 40-diamond wreathe. This beautiful Blancpain movement is gushing with graceful femininity, may it be viewed in any angle.

Glashütte Original Pavonina Inspired by the strong feminine spirit that has been breaking the norm since the 1920s, the Glashütte Original Pavonina collection represents the idea of freedom among contemporary women. The range of the collection’s design is from simple elegance to extraordinary opulence, which aptly suits the various lifestyles that women enjoy today. The 31 x 31 mm timepieces come in three various case designs, such as coolly brilliant stainless steel, a warm and radiant 18-carat red gold or a bi-colour combination of both stainless steel and red gold. The freedom of choice continues in the dials, which can be made of galvanised ruthenium, extremely thin mother of pearl or galvanised silver. Pavonina is Latin for peacock, which best represents the highlight of the collection – a timepiece whose face is aptly depicted by a stylised peacock’s tail, having an arrangement of 98 hand-placed diamonds totaling to 0.38 carats that are embedded on precisely milled mocca or mother of pearl Colorit dial. The watch is further glorified by the placement of 114 radiant diamonds circling the case, ensuring that the timepiece is like its wearer – unrivalled in class and style.
