Een beeld met een woord: De Reiziger

Een fotograaf kan nog zoveel beelden schieten als hij wil maar als niemand anders ze apprecieert, is het zoals roepen in de woestijn. Enkele weken geleden kreeg ik de gelegenheid om enkele van mijn foto’s voor te leggen aan een panel van collega-fotografen, gevolgd door een reverse workshop waarbij ik hun foto’s van commentaar voorzag. Ik heb er veel uit geleerd. Een tijd geleden schreef ik me in op www.gurushots.com dat zowat hetzelfde nastreeft. Regelmatig kun je op deze website foto’s insturen rond een bepaald thema; anderen kunnen je foto’s liken (of niet) en zo kun je opklimmen tot zelfs ‘guru’. Daar ben ik niet geraakt maar het bijna dagelijks insturen van werk bij challenges nam teveel tijd in beslag zodat ik eruit stapte. Bovenstaande foto maakte ik op de ferry van Vancouver naar Vancouver Island; de reiziger staart naar de stad die hij net verliet. De foto deed het in beide commentaarrondes goed. De diagonale opstelling en de simpele uitvoering (er is niets overbodig in het beeld) maken dat alle aandacht naar de reiziger met zijn bagage gaat. Heimwee? Dromend van een nieuw leven? Gewoon genietend van het zonnetje? Wie zal het zeggen. Een foto waarachter je een verhaal kunt bevroeden, valt dikwijls in de smaak. A photographer can shoot as many images as he wants but if no one else appreciates them, it is like calling in the desert. A long time ago I had the opportunity to present some of my photos to a panel of fellow photographers, followed by a reverse workshop where I commented on their photos. I learned a lot from it. Some time later I registered at www.gurushots.com which is about the same. You can regularly submit photos on this website around a specific theme; others may like your photos (or not) and so you can climb up to even ‘guru’. I almost reached this level but it took too much time to send in almost daily for the challenges so I gave up. I mad the picture above on the ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island; the traveler stares at the city he just left. The photo did well on both comment rounds. The diagonal arrangement and the simple execution (there is nothing superfluous in the image) make that all attention goes to the traveler with his luggage. Homesickness? Dreaming of new life? Just enjoying the sun? Who will say it. A picture behind which you can imagine a story is often appreciated.
