At TravelLocal, we believe that local knowledge makes the world of difference to your holiday. TravelLocal started life in 2008 as an idea shared by our founders, Tom and Huw. At the time, both were fully immersed in other areas of the travel industry and couldn’t help but feel that something was missing. Big tour operators were dominating the market and the local experts that planned the trips were treated as a “trade secret”. They started TravelLocal to change that. Since 2012 we have scoured the globe to find local travel experts from Argentina to Zanzibar and anywhere in between, enabling you - our travellers - to plan your holidays direct with the people who know your destination best. You get a better, more authentic holiday experience and our local experts get a fairer deal.
Discover the better way to book your perfect holiday.

Captivating and full of character, Cuba is one of the Caribbean’s most intriguing destinations. Its complex history and tentative steps towards modernity make a fascinating cultural backdrop to the many delights of the island. For starters there is the stunning coastline, fringed with more than 300 glorious beaches, so whether you prefer the full resort experience or hiking between hidden coves backed by pristine nature, there’s a beach - or several - to meet your needs. If you can drag yourself away from those wonderful Caribbean colours, there is a whole island to discover, from the rustic charm of the countryside to the soulful sounds of the capital, always pulsing with Cuban beats. Music fans will enjoy the renowned Havana Jazz Festival which takes place from 12th to 20th January 2020 and features some of the most important artists from Latin America and beyond performing all over the city.

Viñales Valley
As a contrast to all that culture, the scenic enclave of Viñales valley is the perfect place to see rural Cuba up close as you walk, ride or cycle among the tobacco farms and the ‘mogotes’ - rocky outcrops which dot the valley and give it an unusual charm. Cuba has a clutch of beautiful colonial towns to explore, with Trinidad topping many travellers’ lists of the most attractive both in terms of its historic appeal and its delightful setting. Tourism in Cuba is gradually bringing benefits to the population, and one of the best ways to ensure your money goes directly to Cuban families is to stay in the Casas Particulares, which are simple rooms in family homes, but give you a great opportunity to get to know local people and benefit from their hospitality and micro-local knowledge. The food in Casas Particulares is usually good, too.

Mexico January might be the coolest month weather wise across Mexico, but in many areas that makes it the best month. High season starts in early December and lasts through until the end of April, so January is likely to be a busy month. Blue skies and sea temperatures in the high twenties make the Yucatán Peninsula and its fabulous Caribbean coastline a great destination at this time of year, and with the cultural celebrations of Mérida’s annual Arts Festival taking place from 5 - 26th January there’s plenty going on in the region. Whale watching on the Pacific coast is also great at this time of year, with humpback whales nursing their young in the sheltered waters.

Falkland Islands Famous for its pristine marine environment, military history, windswept beauty and amazing wildlife, January is the middle of the summer in the Falklands, although the weather is notoriously unpredictable even in the warmest season. The bonus of a January trip to the archipelago is the long hours of daylight which open up opportunities for hiking the islands’ most scenic trails, fishing the estuaries and wildlife watching. Huge colonies of marine mammals and birds make their homes on the various beaches and islands, and the chances of being the only human in the vicinity while you admire them is pretty high. Summer is also the best season for seeing the famous Falklands wildlife rearing their young.

In the middle of the dry season but a little after the Christmas rush, February is a great month to plan a Sri Lanka holiday. With its appealing mixture of cultural sights, natural beauty and exotic wildlife, this is a destination where you can tick a lot of boxes on your holiday wishlist. Safari is a great value option in Yala and Wilpattu National Parks, where the headline creatures include leopards, elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, sloth bears and spotted deer, as well as an amazing variety of birds. Yala is the most popular location for safari, so consider Wilpattu if you prefer a more immersive, off the beaten track wildlife experience. Wilpattu and Bundala National Parks should be top of the list for keen birders. February is the peak whale watching season on the south coast too, so you can easily squeeze that into your beach itinerary if it appeals. Mexico : CopĂĄn

A trip into the central highlands offers incredible train rides, tea plantation visits and superlative hikes, as well as the chance to get to know Kandy, one of Sri Lanka’s most appealing towns which is also home to Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist temple, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. An added bonus of a February trip to Sri Lanka is the Independence Day celebrations on the 4th, where you can see the country at its most patriotic with flag hoisting, parades, performances and national celebrations. This teardrop shaped island surrounded by the beautiful Indian Ocean is in particular need of your custom at the moment, as the tragic events of Easter 2019 have taken their toll on visitor numbers and those who make a living from tourism in Sri Lanka are facing hardship. Due to the reduced tourist footfall, Sri Lanka is also particularly great value at the moment, so you can do your bit to help the recovery and get a very good deal for your trip at the same time.

Brazil There is no better time to see Brazil’s exuberance and open-hearted character than during the Rio Carnival, which starts on the Friday preceding Ash Wednesday, and continues with all the pizazz and colour you would expect for the next five days. And what better setting for such festivities than the incredible rollercoaster landscape of Guanabara Bay which encompasses the city? Armenia Packed with ancient, atmospherically sited churches and monasteries, Armenia is a great combination of historic intrigue, dramatic landscapes and a distinctive culture. Birdwatchers and hikers will find plenty to get excited about among the stunning gorges, rivers and peaks of the Caucasus, while anyone with an interest in the origins of Christianity should make a trip to Armenia a priority, as it was the first nation to adopt the religion for the whole population in the year 301 AD. A February visit to Armenia offers excellent facilities for winter sports at the ski resort of Tsaghkadzor, perched on the pretty slopes of Mount Tanegiz an easy journey from Yerevan. Breathtaking wildernesses, amazing wildlife and distinctive culture sum up this vast African destination. Much of the country consists of desert, yet there is more interest here than you might expect. Despite the harsh conditions, plenty of creatures thrive in Namibia, and it can be a real eye opener to discover from your knowledgeable guide just how so many animals eke out a living here, sometimes using remarkable feats of adaptation to to survive. A good place to begin your Namibia wildlife adventure would be Etosha National Park in Namibia’s northern region. It’s a vast park which hosts over 300 species of birds and contains the Etosha salt pan which is big enough to be clearly visible from space. Within the park’s borders there are huge numbers of zebra and antelope, and significant populations of black rhino, giraffe, lion, oryx, wildebeest, elephant, and even leopard and cheetah.

Namibia is all about dazzling landscapes and vast empty spaces where the light pollution is about as close to zero as its possible to get on the planet, meaning incredible stargazing is yours for the taking. A great way to maximise your exposure to the night sky is by doing a multiday hike on the Tok Tokkie trail, which is perfect in March as the nighttime temperatures are not too cold. The daytime scenery competes with the splendour of the night sky on this famous Namibian trek. To round out your adventure, spend some time exploring the friendly capital, Windhoek, or the coastal hub of Swakopmund with its Germanic flavour before venturing to the windswept Skeleton Coast, the impressive Fish River Canyon or the majestic scenery of the red dunes around Sossusvlei. Costa Rica The dry season is well underway in Costa Rica by March, when the weather is warm to hot and generally dry nationwide, with the exception of the Caribbean coast which sees some afternoon showers. Enjoy the variety of adventures that sets Costa Rica apart, from volcano hikes and hot springs to wildlife watching, canopy ziplines and lovely beaches - it’s all here. Whether you are into birdwatching or white water rafting, the Costa Rican landscape will oblige, with a fabulous variety of species and cloud forest scenery. The dry season is a good time for wildlife spotting in Costa Rica as water is scarce so creatures are on the move searching for a drink. Late March can get busy with spring breakers from the US, so aim for early March for lower prices and better availability.

Borneo, Malaysia A hothouse of incredible natural splendour, Borneo enjoys its drier season during March to October, when rainfall is lower. As it is located within the tropics it does rain frequently most of the year, but during the drier months you have a higher chance of seeing orangutans in the wild. March is a shoulder season month in terms of visitor numbers, meaning better availability and fewer crowds. Sabah in particular is at its driest in March, making it a great time to explore the northern beaches of Lankayan Island or Kota Kinabalu or enjoy some of the world’s best dive sites at Sipadan. If you would like to experience some of India’s amazing historic monuments in the Golden Triangle, avoid the midday heat and make sure you are prepared with water and sun protection. Tiger safaris in many of India’s reserves are great at this time of year because the majestic cats are more visible as they search for water - head for Bandhavgarh National Park, Pench Tiger Reserve or Ranthambore National Park to see them.

Embracing both European and Asian territory, Russia straddles the continental divide with ease. Its fabled vastness is really no exaggeration - Russia is the largest nation on earth, with no fewer than 9 time zones and occupying more than 16 million square kilometres, or 11% of the surface of the planet. Suffice to say, it’s big. The European portion accounts for about a quarter of the landmass and is home to three quarters of the total population, so this is an obvious place to start your Russian exploration. June is a fantastic month in terms of climate, as the summer is revving up and days are long and warm, though the short nights can still be very chilly. Moscow is a huge draw for visitors and cannot fail to impress with its grandiose imperial architecture and huge public spaces. The blooms move gradually south from the northern cape, and though the dates vary slightly each year depending on climatic conditions, there will always be blooms in August. The wildlife watching opportunities in South Africa are also wonderful in the southern hemisphere winter, whether you are hoping to spot pods of southern right and humpback whales present in the coastal waters, or the Big Five in Kruger National Park.

Kenya : Masai Mara Serengeti National Park
Enjoy the blissful beaches of the Indian Ocean coast and Zanzibar, where dreamy seascapes are accompanied by rustling palms and a distinct Swahili culture and cuisine. The prolific number of National Parks and reserves throughout Kenya and Tanzania contain a huge range of habitats which support vast numbers of creatures from exotic insects and birds right through to the biggest mammals that walk our Earth. Many thousands of wildebeest, impala, gazelle and zebra circulate throughout the Serengeti and Masai Mara regions year round, searching for the best grazing. September is one of the best months to see the dramatic spectacle of these huge herds risking life and limb as they cross and recross the Mara River as they look for fresh grass. The wildebeest charge down riverbanks and take their chances crossing fast flowing rivers where crocodiles and other predators lie in wait for their next meal. The frantic stampede to get across the river to safety inevitably leads to casualties and it can be quite a raw and brutal experience, but nevertheless it is one of the most unbelievably powerful and moving sights you’ll find in the natural world. 42

Argentina This vast South American country basks in beautiful spring-like temperatures in September, but since footfall slows right down outside the southern hemisphere summer, it’s a lot less crowded. Northern Argentina is particularly appealing at this time of year in terms of climate, so get under the skin of the lively capital Buenos Aires, home of the tango, where historic neighbourhoods and bustling markets compete for your attention with La Boca’s vibrant streets and the chic surrounds of Recoleta. Hop north to Salta, a vibrant city which makes the perfect jumping off point for trips out to the dramatic landscapes and traditional winegrowing towns of these northern mountains.

Vietnam is such a long, narrow country that it really consists of three climatic zones, each with contrasting conditions. For keen hikers as well as anyone seeking that breathtaking scenery of crinkle cut hillsides terraced into paddyfields, October is a fantastic time of year to plan your visit as this is when the far north - the mountainous region of Vietnam - enjoys the best weather for trekking. After the wet season, October sees cooler temperatures, lower humidity and dry, clear weather which shows off the region’s best features to maximum effect. The rice terraces around Mu Cang Chai, Hà Giang and Pù Luông turn a gentle golden hue before harvest, and around Hà Giang in particular the fields are full of pink and white flowering buckwheat which can be breathtaking in the right light.

Vietnam : Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
Hanoi, the major city of the north, also enjoys a pleasant climate in October making it a great time to explore its characterful temples, shophouses and colonial architecture, and of course to sample its famous cuisine. Ha Long Bay and the surrounding coastline can occasionally experience stormy weather at this time but in general cruises are unaffected. As you move south, October brings moderate rain to central Vietnam, but although Hoi An and Hue may be a little wetter at this time of year, you can still enjoy the ancient lanes, historic monuments and charming ambiance of these Vietnamese cultural heavyweights. Fine cuisine and great shopping are another highlight of Hoi An, so don’t let the showery weather put you off. Further south the delights of Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta are enjoying the beginning of the dry season in October, so you can expect sunny days interspersed with occasional showers while you explore the photogenic floating markets of the delta, the modern skyline of Saigon and perhaps the beaches which encircle the beautiful islands of Con Dao and Phu Quoc which see the best chance of sunshine in the second half of the month.

Madagascar October brings out the best in Madagascar, with dry weather dominant and temperatures pleasantly warm. As you travel between the many highlights, look out for jacaranda trees in abundant bloom as October is the height of flowering season. Many visitors flock to Madagascar to enjoy the unique wildlife here, from insects to reptiles and the unmissable lemurs that are the unofficial Malagasy mascot. These fluffy mammals give birth in September, meaning that by October you can spot the adorable pups scampering around and causing mischief. Alongside the mesmerising wildlife, Madagascar offers some wonderfully scenic and unusual landscapes, from the Avenue of the Baobabs to the needle-like rocks of the Tsingy de Bemaraha, the volcanic massif of the Montagne d’Ambre and the dazzling coastal lagoons around the west as well as the Nosy Be archipelago.

Cambodia Cambodia wears its charms easily, casually, yet this modest nation is home to one of the world’s most incredible historic and cultural sights - the temples of Angkor. They really do live up to the hype and leave visitors awestruck by the beauty, mystery and artistry on display. Enjoy the hospitality of the Cambodian people as you explore the stilt villages of the Tonle Sap lake, the beaches of the south or the buzzing hub of Siem Reap. Look out for varied architectural styles or enjoy a sundowner overlooking the Mekong in Phnom Penh, birdwatch in one of the national parks or explore quaint colonial villages such as Kep. In late October or November - dates vary but in 2020 the dates are 30th October to 2nd November - enjoy the famous Water Festival (Bon Om Touk) with its boat races and festivities marking the reversal of the flow of the Tonle Sap river to fill the eponymous lake. travellocal.com

Not only is November a fantastic month for great value off season holidays in South Africa, but it is also a good time to make the most of all that this varied country has to offer. Cape Town’s multifaceted appeal is heating up as summer arrives, and the weather is mostly balmy and dry, great for relaxed evenings enjoying the lively dining scene and nightlife in the city. The nearby beaches and stunning surrounds of Table Mountain are ready and waiting for your holiday expeditions, and all without the crowds that descend from December onwards. Beyond the ‘Mother City’ the winelands call you to come and enjoy the beautiful scenery, historic estates and delicious vintages, while the Garden Route tempts you to discover its incredible coastal landscapes, wild beaches and plentiful outdoor activities.

South Africa : Hermanus
Head north for the show stopping destinations of the Elephant Coast, Drakensberg Mountains and northern national parks for the best opportunities to see South Africa’s incredible wildlife. November isn’t peak month for safari in the Kruger and surrounding national parks, as the spring rains mean there’s less of a need to animals to cluster near watering holes, but nevertheless it’s still a rewarding experience. Two other wildlife experiences in South Africa are at their best in November, however, so make sure you include Hermanus and iSimangaliso in your plans. Hermanus is the prime location on the Western Cape for whale watching, and although November is the tail end of the season, if you take a boat trip into the bay you are likely to spot lingering southern right whale mothers and their calves. Late November is also when loggerhead and leatherback turtles start to come ashore in the enchanting surroundings of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park to lay their eggs. Join a tour to see the mothers dig their nests, or come a few months later (February is best) to see the hatchlings make their way to the sea. 50

Nepal Many visitors to Nepal come for the Himalayan trekking, and November is the perfect time to head into these fabled mountains. Conditions at this time of year are dry and clear meaning stunning views from the famous trails taking in the incredible sawtooth peaks on the roof of the world. This is peak season because of the great weather, so it’s worth planning in advance to secure your choice of accommodation. The dry weather also means it’s a good time for wildlife spotting in the tropical lowland jungles of Chitwan National Park where rhinos, elephants and even tigers and leopards roam. Look out for the unusual gharial - a slim snouted cousin of the crocodile and the brilliant variety of birds.

Guatemala El Día de los Muertos is a celebration which takes place in many countries worldwide, and takes many different forms, though all festivities are conceived to honour loved ones who have passed away. Some of the most famous festivities take place in Central America, among the most popular are in Mexico. If you have seen the Mexican celebrations or you would simply prefer to discover a more ‘off the beaten track’ destination and festival, then consider Guatemala’s awe inspiring Giant Kite Festival, featuring stunning kites of various dimensions from large to supersized, all handmade in the 40 days preceding the event. The kites are flown on 2nd November to guide the spirits of the dead back to their loved ones, as ancient Mayan beliefs suggest that the worlds of the living and the dead merge on this day. travellocal.com

To experience that true ‘edge of the world’ feeling, nothing compares to the southern tip of South America where Patagonia peters out into a smattering of rocky islets at the edge of the South Pacific - next stop, Antarctica. Ushuaia braces itself against the elements here, and from the city you can explore the mighty Tierra del Fuego National Park, a beautiful combination of pristine natural wetlands, dramatic views of fjords and forests. There’s lots of unique flora and fauna to spot, including a large variety of geese. To add even more drama to Patagonia’s legendary scenery, time your visit to straddle 14th December 2020, when Pucon in the Chilean Lake District and San Martin de Los Andes in Argentinian Patagonia will be in the path of a total solar eclipse. It will be visible all over Patagonia and beyond, but for totality these are the best locations - it’s a good idea to plan in advance to ensure accommodation availability.

Myanmar (Burma) To experience Myanmar at its best, aim for the cool, dry season which begins in November and lasts into February. Temperatures are just perfect - daily highs hover between 20 to 30 degrees celsius depending on location and altitude - and rainfall is almost non existent while humidity is low. The coast enjoys lovely conditions with a gentle sea breeze and pleasant water temperatures for swimming, and sightseeing is a delight in cultural Yangon or mystical Bagan with its thousands of temples and stupas littering the horizon. Head to the incredible surrounds of Inle Lake, where birders will be pleased to note that some 20,000 migratory birds are present in December, and though it is peak season in Myanmar you will rarely come across crowds of visitors.

Southern India Kerala and Goa are great destinations at this time of year for those in search of some winter sun. It’s a popular time to visit, so consider booking in advance for the best availability. Enjoy a Christmas celebration with a difference at the Cochin Carnival - a week long festival running from 25th December involving light installations, elaborate costumed processions, concerts, sports matches, food festivals and general merriment. Cultural events come thick and fast during December in Southern India, so look out for the Sunburn Music Festival in Goa, or the more traditional Indira Gandhi Boat Race which takes place in late December in the Kochi backwaters. You could combine your winter sun with a tour of northern India’s highlights, but bear in mind that during December many areas in the north are very cold. travellocal.com
