Wat Phra Singh (Phra Singh Temple) วัดพระสิงห์วรมหาวิหาร วัดพระสิงห์ เดิมมีชื่อว่า “วัดลีเชียง” (ค�ำว่า “ลี” เป็นภาษาโบราณ แปล ว่า ตลาด) มีข้อสันนิษฐานว่า ในอดีตบริเวณหน้าวัดแห่งนี้ เป็นลานขายสินค้า หรือตลาดกลางเมือง ต่อมาเมื่อมีการอัญเชิญพระพุทธสิหิงค์มาประดิษฐาน ณ วัดลีเชียง จึงได้ชื่อใหม่ว่า “วัดพระสิงห์” วัดพระสิงห์เป็นวัดส�ำคัญแห่งหนึ่งของเชียงใหม่ มีวิหารลายค�ำที่มี จิตรกรรมฝาผนังเป็นเรือ่ งสุวรรณหงส์ และสังข์ทอง ทีม่ ลี ายเส้นและสีสนั งดงาม ภายในวิหารลายค�ำยังเป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธสิหิงค์ หนึ่งในพระพุทธรูป ส�ำคัญของเมืองเชียงใหม่ บริเวณใกล้เคียงมีพระธาตุเจดียท์ องอร่ามตัง้ ตระหง่านเห็นเป็นองค์เด่นชัด โดยองค์พระเจดียน์ ตี้ ามคติความเชือ่ ล้านนาถือว่าเป็นพระธาตุประจ�ำปีมะโรง ดัง นัน้ ผูท้ เี่ กิดปีมะโรงจึงต้องไม่พลาดมาสักการะสักครั้ง Wat Phra Singh was originally called “Wat Lee Chiang” (The word “Lee” is an ancient language which means market). A presumption stated in the past, that there was an open space to sell products or a city central market in front of this temple. Later, Phra Buddha Sihing was enshrined in Wat Lee Chiang; thus, the temple has been called “Wat Phra Singh” since. Wat Phra Singh is one of the important temples in Chiang Mai which has Lai Kham vihara decorated with beautiful mural painting of folk tales titled Suwannahong and Sungthong. The Buddha’s image called Phra Buddhasihing is also enshrined within this Lai Kham vihara. The golden Buddha’s relic pagoda is also located gracefully in the area nearby. According to Lanna’s belief, this pagoda represents one of the signs of the zodiac or the year of the Dragon. Therefore, the people who were born in the year of the dragon should come to worship once in their life time.
Suan Dok Gate ประตูสวนดอก ประตูสวนดอก เป็นประตูเมืองประจ�ำทิศ ตะวันตก เส้นทางสูอ่ ทุ ยานของกษัตริยใ์ นอดีต ค�ำว่า “สวนดอก” หมายถึง สวนดอกไม้ หรือ อุทยานดอกไม้ ในสมัยพญากือนา กษัตริยอ์ งค์ที่ 6 แห่งราชวงศ์ มังราย ได้สร้างพระอารามบนพืน้ ทีอ่ ทุ ยานจึงเรียกว่า วัดสวนดอก หรือ วัดบุปผาราม หนึง่ ในวัดส�ำคัญของ เมืองเชียงใหม่ คูเมืองด้านทิศตะวันตกบริเวณประตูสวน ดอกนี้ ท่านสามารถพบ “ต้นหางนกยูง” ต้นไม้ที่ มีดอกเป็นสีแสดชูช่อไสว สีแสดมิได้ปรากฏแต่เพียง บนดอกไม้เท่านัน้ หากแต่ยงั ทาบบนผืนผ้าเป็นสีของ จีวร อันเป็นเครื่องนุ่มห่มของพระภิกษุสงฆ์ ดังนั้นสี แสดของดอกไม้ทถี่ กู ปลูกในทิศนีจ้ งึ มีความเชือ่ มโยง ไปถึงวิถแี ห่งพระพุทธศาสนาตามทิศทีเ่ ป็นเส้นทางสู่ ดอยสุ เ ทพ สถานที่ ตั้ ง วั ด พระธาตุ ด อยสุ เ ทพ ราชวรวิหาร Suan Dok Gate is the city gate located in the west side of Chiang Mai old city. It was also the route to the former kings’ garden. The word “Suan Dok” means a flower garden or a flower park. In the reign of Phaya Guena, the 6th King of Mangrai Dynasty was pleased to build a royal monastery in the garden area called “Wat Suan Dok” or “Wat Buppharam” which is now one of the most important temples in Chiang Mai. It was used as a temporary residence of Phramaha Terasumon, a Buddhist missionary in Lanna during Buddhist Lent. Buddha’s relic was also respectfully brought from Sukhothai to Chiang Mai as an offer to Phaya Guena. Later, Buddha’s relic was separated into 2 parts. One part was enshrined in the pagoda in Wat Suan Dok while another part was respectfully taken to house in the pagoda at Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep which has been the center of Chiang Mai people’s faith. In the temple’s area are also reliquaries containing relics of former Chiang Mai rulers and their relatives built in the reign of Princess Dara Rasmi.
Hua Lin Corner แจ่งหัวลิน จากประตูสวนดอก มุง่ มาตามถนนเลียบเลาะคูเมือง เรื่อยมาจนสุด ก็จะพบก�ำแพงเมืองส่วนที่เป็นหัวมุม ซึ่ง ภาษาล้านนาเรียกว่า “แจ่ง” โดยแจ่งแรกทีพ่ บคือ “แจ่งหัวลิน” แจ่งหัวลินมีประวัตวิ า่ พญามังราย ปฐมกษัตริยล์ า้ น นา โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ขุดคูเมืองเพื่อใช้กักเก็บน�้ำ ทว่าในขณะ นั้น ยังไม่มีน�้ำไหลเข้ามา พระองค์จึงทรงท�ำรางไม้ไผ่เพื่อ ผันน�ำ้ จากน�ำ้ ตกห้วยแก้ว บริเวณเชิงดอยสุเทพลงมายังแจ่ง นี้ เพือ่ หล่อเลีย้ งชีวติ ในเขตเมืองจึงนับว่าเป็นภูมปิ ญ ั ญาและ การสร้างระบบชลประทานอันทรงคุณค่าแห่งล้านนา หากสังเกตไปยังบริเวณแจ่งหัวลินจะพบต้นไม้สูง ชะลู ด มี ชื่ อ ว่ า “ต้ น ลาน” ในอดี ต คนล้ า นนาใช้ ใบลานในการบันทึกตัวอักษร เรียกว่าการจารหรือจารึก ต้น ลานเป็นต้นไม้ดั้งเดิม คนล้านนามักบันทึกเรื่องราวพระ ธรรมค�ำสอนทางพุทธศาสนา ประเพณีพธิ กี รรม องค์ความรู้ ภูมิปัญญาต่างๆ ลงบนใบลาน เรียกว่า คัมภีร์ใบลาน ใน สมั ย พญามั ง รายก็ มี ก ารใช้ ใ บลานโดยน� ำ มาเขี ย นร่ า ง กฎหมายปกครองบ้านเมือง เรียกว่า กฎหมายมังรายศาสตร์ ต้นลานยังมีอกี ชือ่ ว่า “ต้นลูกฆ่าแม่” ทัง้ นีก้ เ็ พราะว่า เมื่อใดที่ดอกของต้นลานผลิบานและออกผล ล�ำต้นลานก็ จะยืนต้นตายทันที อย่างไรก็ตาม ด้วยการเล็งเห็นความส�ำคัญของต้น ลาน คนเมืองเชียงใหม่ทุกภาคส่วนจึงร่วมแรงร่วมใจปลูก ต้นลานทดแทน เพื่อสืบต่อให้ต้นลานยังคงอยู่คู่บ้านเมือง ตลอดไป
From Suan Dok Gate, go straight to the right and along the moat, there is a city wall at the corner called “Chaeng” in Lanna. This first Corner presents “Chaeng Hua Lin”. The history said that Phaya Mangrai, the first king of Lanna, agreed to build the moat to reserve water. At that time when there was no water flowing in, the king ordered to make a bamboo rail for a purpose of water diversion from Huay Kaew waterfall, the area at the foot of Doi Suthep, down to this corner. The aim was to nourish many lives in the city area. It was also considered the local wisdom and the establishment of valuable irrigation system in Lanna. If taking a good notice in the area of Chaeng Hua Lin, there is topmost tree called “Ton Lan” or Talipot Palm. In the past, Lanna people used palm leaves for the purpose of making written records or an inscription. Ton Lan is considered as a traditional tree and its leaves were often used to note Buddha Sutras, traditions, rites, knowledge and different wisdoms which would be called Palm-leaf scriptures. In the reign of Phaya Mangrai, palm leaves were also used to write administrative bill called Mangrai Customary Law. Ton Lan also has another name as “A mother-killing tree”. The name was derived from the biological nature of the tree which will die standing tall right after its blooming or bearing fruits. Nowadays, from the importance of Ton Lan, Chiang Mai people from all sectors join forces to plant Ton Tan to preserve this kind of tree.
แจ่งหัวลิน
Wat Lokmolee (Lokmolee Temple) วัดโลกโมฬี วัดโลกโมฬี เดิมใช้เป็นวัดในการต้อนรับพระราช อาคันตุกะจากต่างเมือง ภายในวัดมีมณฑปพระนางเจ้า จิรประภามหาเทวี ผู้ได้รับการทูลเชิญให้ขึ้นครองเมืองใน สมัยหนึ่ง ต่อมาสมเด็จพระไชยราชาธิราช กษัตริย์อยุธยา ยกทัพมาหมายจะตีเมืองเชียงใหม่ ทว่าด้วยพระปรีชา สามารถของพระนาง จึงทรงรักษาเอกราชของบ้านเมืองไว้ ได้โดยปราศจากความสูญเสีย ทั้งยังมีการทูลเชิญพระไชย ราชาธิราชเสด็จมาท�ำบุญที่วัดโลกโมฬีแห่งนี้ ด้วยความรัก และความห่วงใยที่พระนางจิรประภามหาเทวีมีต่อไพร่ฟ้า พระนางจึงได้รับการยกย่องเป็น “เทพเจ้าแห่งความรัก” เหตุนี้ วัดโลกโมฬี จึงมีชื่อเสียงในเรื่องการขอพร เกี่ยวกับความรัก
Wat Lokmolee was originally used to welcome royal visitors from other cities. Inside the temple, there is a pavilion of Queen Maha Thewi Chira Prapha who was once respectfully invited to ascend the throne. Not long after that, Somdet Phra Chaiyarachathirat, the King of Ayutthaya, marched an army with the aim to attack the city. However, Chiang Mai maintained its independence without any losses because of the queen’s wisdom. Additionally, Somdet Phra Chaiyarachathirat of Ayutthaya was also invited to make merit in this temple. With the queen’s love and care for her people, she was praised as “Goddess of Love” and that is the reason why Wat Lokmolee is famous for praying for love.
Chang Puak Gate ประตูช้างเผือก ประตูชา้ งเผือก เป็นประตูเมืองประจ�ำทิศเหนือ ชาว ล้านนาถือว่าเป็นทิศมงคลของเมือง ด้วยเป็นทักษาแห่งเดช (อ�ำนาจและบารมี) ถือเป็นทิศแห่งชัยชนะของพญามังราย ในอดีตประตูชา้ งเผือกเป็นประตูทใี่ ช้ในการออกรบ โดยเป็น จุดรวมพลทหารและตัง้ ขบวนรบ ก่อนออกรบจะมีมโหรี ลัน่ กลองสะบัดชัยเพื่อเรียกขวัญและก�ำลังใจ ประตูนถี้ อื เป็นประตูของกษัตริยห์ รือผูป้ กครองเมือง ในปัจจุบัน เมื่อมีการรับต�ำแหน่งของข้าราชการชั้นผู้ใหญ่ อาทิ ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ก็จะให้ผ่านประตูนี้เข้า เมือง เพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลก่อนการปฏิบัติราชการ เลาะเลียบคูเมืองทางประตูช้างเผือกจะพบ “ต้น ราชพฤกษ์” (ต้นไม้ประจ�ำชาติไทย) มีดอกสีเหลืองซึ่งจะ ผลิดอกบานในฤดูร้อน (หน้าแล้ง ; ภาษาปาก) จึงมีชื่อใน ถิ่นเหนือว่า ต้นลมแล้ง นอกจากนี้ ต้นราชพฤกษ์ยังมีอีก หลายชื่อ เช่น ต้นคูณ (ถิ่นอีสาน) ต้นชัยพฤกษ์ สังเกตได้ ว่าทุกชือ่ ของต้นไม้ตน้ นีล้ ว้ นแต่เป็นมงคลนาม กล่าวคือ 1) ราชพฤกษ์ แปลว่า ต้นไม้ของพระราชา 2) คูณ (ถิ่นอีสาน) หมายถึง ความเจริญ, ค�้ำจุน, เกื้อหนุน 3) ชัยพฤกษ์ แปล ว่า ต้นไม้แห่งชัยชนะ ดังนั้น การปลูกต้นราชพฤกษ์เลาะ คูเมืองทางด้านประตูช้างเผือกจึงสอดคล้องกันในด้าน ความเชื่อเรื่องทักษาและมงคลนาม อย่างไรก็ดี ต้นราชพฤกษ์นี้มิได้ถูกปลูกมาแต่เดิม ตัง้ แต่เริม่ สร้างบ้านแปงเมือง ทว่าถูกปลูกขึน้ ในยุคสมัยหลัง มานี้เอง
Chang Puak Gate is the city gate of the North which Lanna people has considered it as an auspicious direction of the city. This direction is also an angle of power (authority and virtue) and the direction of victory for Phaya Mangrai. In the past, Chang Puak Gate was used in the battle as an army gathering point and deployment. Before the army started marching out, there would be a gamelan drumming on Klong Sabad Chai to call for the soldiers’ morale and spirit. This gate is considered the gate for the kings or the rulers of the city. At present, when senior government officers such as Chiang Mai’s governors coming to take positions, they will go passing under this gate to enter the city. This is for them to have good fortunes before starting their works. Along the moat from Chang Puak Gate, you will find “Ratchapruek tree” or “Golden shower” (Thailand National tree) with their yellow flowers blooming in summer (Na Laeng or dry season: spoken language). In local northern dialect, this tree is called Ton Lom Lang (Dry Air Tree). Ratchapruek trees are also known by many names such as Ton Koon (local Northeastern dialect) and Chaiyapruek tree. It is noticed that each name of this tree has auspicious meaning, namely; 1) Ratchapruek means the King’s tree 2) Koon (Northeastern dialect) means prosperity and support 3) Chaiyapruek means the tree of victory. Therefore, planting Ratchapruek trees along the moat on the side of Chang Puak Gate is related to the belief of the auspicious directions and names. These Ratchapruek trees, however, were not planted from the beginning of the city establishment. They all were planted not too long ago.
Sripoom Corner แจ่งศรีภูมิ ศรีภูมิ เดิมออกเสียงว่า สะ-หลี-ภูมิ ทั้งนี้ สะ-หลี ใน ภาษาล้านนาก็คอื ค�ำว่า ศรี แปลว่า มิง่ , ความรุง่ เรือง, ความ สว่างสุกใส หรือสิรมิ งคล ส่วน ภูมิ หมายถึง แผ่นดิน ดังนัน้ “ศรีภูมิ” จึงหมายถึง แผ่นดินอันเป็นมิ่งมงคล นั่นเอง ตามหลักฐานทางประวัตศิ าสตร์ ระบุวา่ พญามังราย เริ่มสร้างเมืองเชียงใหม่ โดยลงจอบขุดเสียมเพื่อก่อก�ำแพง เมือง ณ มุมเมืองนีก้ อ่ น สถานทีแ่ ห่งนีจ้ งึ เป็นจุดเริม่ ต้นของ การสร้างเมืองเชียงใหม่ เมื่อครั้งเริ่มสร้างเมือง พญามังรายทรงใช้ดินจาก การขุดมาใช้ก่อก�ำแพงและใช้ก้อนอิฐประสานไว้ด้วยกัน ต้นไม้ใหญ่ทอี่ ยูบ่ ริเวณนีค้ อื “ต้นโพ” คนล้านนาเรียกว่า ต้น สะหลี ดังนั้น การตั้งชื่อมุมเมืองนี้ว่า ศรีภูมิ จึงเป็นการ ตอกย�้ำความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับเรื่องทิศ นอกจากต้นโพ ในอดีตบริเวณมุมก�ำแพงเมืองแห่ง นี้ยังมี “ต้นไทร” หรือ “ต้นนิโครธ” เป็นต้นไม้ที่คนไทยให้ ความส�ำคัญด้วยเป็นต้นไม้ขนาดใหญ่ทแี่ ผ่กงิ่ ก้านให้รม่ เงา ได้มาก ดังส�ำนวนไทยว่า “ร่มโพธิ์ ร่มไทร” หมายถึง ผู้ที่ เป็ น ที่ พึ่ ง และปกป้ อ งคุ ้ ม ครองให้ อ ยู ่ เ ป็ น สุ ข สบายและ ปลอดภัย
Sripoom was originally pronounced Sa-LheePoom with the reason that Sa-Lhee in Lanna language is “Sri” which means prosperity, brilliance, luck while “Poom” means land. Therefore, “Sripoom” means a prosperous land. According to historical evidence, when Phaya Mangrai started to build Chiang Mai, he started off building the city wall at this corner (Chaeng). So, Sripoom Corner is the start of Chiang Mai city establishment. When Phaya Mangrai started building the city at this corner (Chaeng), the soil dug from this site was used to build the wall and cement the bricks in place. Big trees around this area are called “Ton Bo” or Bodhi trees which are also called “Ton Sa Lhee” by Lanna people. Therefore, naming this corner, Sripoom is to purposely emphasize the belief on auspicious direction. Besides Bodhi trees, the area around this city corner in the past also had “Ton Sai” or “Ton Nikot” (banyan tree) which was very important to Thai people. This kind of tree is large with its branches stretching out to create a big shade. This fact represents Thai proverb stating that “Rom Bo Rom Sai” or “Shade of Bo and Shade of Sai” which means a guardian and a protector who makes people feel happy and safe.
Wat Chiang Man (Chiang Man temple) วัดเชียงมั่น วัดเชียงมั่น เป็นพระอารามหลวงแห่งแรกของเมือง เชียงใหม่ โดยหลักศิลาจารึกวัดเชียงมัน่ ระบุวา่ พญามังราย ทรงสร้างทีป่ ระทับชัว่ คราว ณ บ้านเชียงมัน่ เพือ่ ควบคุมการ สร้างเมือง ครัน้ แล้วเสร็จจึงเสด็จไปประทับยังเวียงแก้ว แล้ว โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ก่อเจดีย์ครอบ ณ หอนอน (ราชมณเฑียร) พร้อมทั้งบรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ คือ พระเกศาธาตุ ลักษณะรูปทรงของเจดีย์มีข้อสันนิษฐานว่าเป็นการสร้าง เลียนแบบเจดีย์ช้างล้อมของเมืองศรีสัชนาลัยแห่งสุโขทัย พญามังรายพระราชทานนามอันเป็นมงคลว่า “วัด เชียงมั่น” หมายถึง วัดที่มีความมั่นคง ภายในวัดเชียงมัน่ ยังมีพระพุทธรูปศักดิส์ ทิ ธิ์ ได้แก่ พระเสตังคมณี (พระแก้ว ขาว) และพระศิลาเจ้า ซึ่งประดิษฐานในซุ้มโขงปราสาท ศิลปะล้านนา ไม่เพียงเท่านี้ บรรยากาศภายในวัดยังร่มรื่น ไปด้วยไม้ใหญ่ ทัง้ อวลด้วยกลิน่ หอมของดอกลีลาวดี ต้นไม้ ทีอ่ ยูค่ วู่ ดั เชียงมัน่ มาเกือบร้อยปี
Wat Chiang Man is the first temple in Chiang Mai. Wat Chiang Man’s stone inscription stated that Phaya Mangrai ordered to build his temporary pavilion at Ban Chiang Man (Chiang Man village) to be able for him to watch over the city construction. When the city’s construction finished, the king moved to reside in Wiangkaew and approved to build a pagoda covering royal sleeping place (Raj Mandir) as well as housing Buddha’s relics (hair). The form of pagoda was presumed to have been inspired by Chang Lom pagoda in Si Satchanalai, Sukhothai. Phaya Mangrai agreed to bestow the auspicious name called “Wat Chiang Man” which means the temple with stability. Inside Wat Chiang Man, there are 2 precious Buddha images called Phra Setang Kamanee (Phra Keaw Kaow) and Phra Sila Chao which are enshrined inside Lanna-styled Khong Arch building. Moreover, around the temple’s area has pleasant atmosphere shaded by big trees and fragranted by a nice scent of Leelawadee flowers (Apocynaceae). This kind of tree has been there in Wat Chiang Man for almost a hundred years.
Three Kings Monument พระบรมราชานุสาวรีย์สามกษัตริย์ พระบรมราชานุสาวรีย์สามกษัตริย์ หรือที่คนทั่วไป เรียกกันอย่างล�ำลองว่า อนุสาวรียส์ ามกษัตริย์ สร้างขึน้ เพือ่ ระลึ ก ถึ ง พระมหากษั ต ริ ย ์ ผู ้ ส ร้ า งเมื อ งเชี ย งใหม่ ได้ แ ก่ พญามังราย ปฐมกษัตริยร์ าชวงศ์มงั ราย ผูร้ วบรวมแว่นแคว้น และเมืองต่างๆ เข้าเป็นอาณาจักรล้านนาไทย พญาง�ำเมือง และพญาร่วง (พ่อขุนรามค�ำแหงมหาราช) กษัตริย์ท้ังสาม พระองค์ทรงกระท�ำสัตย์ปฏิญาณ โดยดืม่ น�ำ้ สัตยาผสมพระ โลหิตจากนิ้วพระหัตถ์ เพื่อเป็นทัฬหมิตรสนิทแน่น ในกาลก่อนนั้น ครั้นพญามังรายทรงสร้างเมือง เชียงรายแล้ว ภายหลังทรงพบชัยภูมเิ มืองอันเป็นมงคล ด้วย เป็นทีร่ าบริมแม่นำ�้ ปิงกับดอยสุเทพ จึงได้เชิญพระสหายทัง้ สองมาร่วมปรึกษาหารือ และทรงเห็นชอบร่วมกันสร้างเมือง “นพบุรีศรีนครพิงค์เชียงใหม่” ถัดจากอนุสาวรีย์สามกษัตริย์เล็กน้อย หากสังเกต ทางด้านซ้ายมือทีต่ รอกเล็กๆ จะพบหอพญามังราย สร้างขึน้ เพือ่ เป็นอนุสรณ์สถาน ณ บริเวณสวรรคตของพญามังรายครัง้ ต้องอสนีบาต (ฟ้าผ่า)
Three Kings Monument was built to memorize the three kings who collaborately founded Chiang Mai city namely: Phaya Mangrai, the first king of Mangrai dynasty, who gathered other regions and cities to establish Lanna Kingdom; King Ngam Meuang of Phayao; and Phaya Ruang (King Ram Khamhaeng the Great of Sukhothai). All three kings took an oath by drinking consecrated water mixed with blood cut from their fingers to confirm the greatest friendship among them. In the past, after Phaya Mangrai finished building Chiang Rai city, he found the perfect lowland next to Ping River and Doi Suthep. He then consulted with his two close friends (the two kings) and agreed to build another city called “Nobburi Srinakhonping Chiang Mai” Next to Three Kings Monument just a little further, on the left-hand side at the small alley Phaya Mangrai’s chamber was built as a memorial to remember his passing (died from the hit of lightning).
Khum Chao Burirat (Maha-in) คุ้มบุรีรัตน์ เจ้าน้อยมหาอินทร์ คุ้มเจ้าบุรีรัตน์ (มหาอินทร์) เป็นอาคารไม้กึ่งปูน สูง สองชัน้ มีบนั ไดอยูน่ อกตัวบ้าน ชัน้ ล่างมีเสาก่ออิฐก่อเป็นรูป โค้ง ฉาบปูนเรียบ มีระเบียงโดยรอบ ลักษณะอาคารเป็นรูป แบบผสมระหว่างเรือนมนิลากับสถาปัตยกรรมแบบโคโล เนียล ซึง่ เป็นรูปแบบทีแ่ พร่หลายในประเทศอาณานิคม ส่วน ชั้นบนเป็นไม้มีระเบียงโดยรอบเช่นกัน มีหลังคาจัว่ และหลัง คาปั ้ น หยาคลุ ม ระเบี ย งโดยรอบ เป็ น แบบอย่ า งของ สถาปัตยกรรมมหาอ�ำนาจอังกฤษในเชียงใหม่ยคุ แรก มีขอ้ สั น นิ ษ ฐานว่ า บริ ษั ท ป่ า ไม้ ข องชาวอั ง กฤษเป็ น ผู ้ เ ข้ า มา ก่อสร้างให้เจ้าบุรีรัตน์เมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2432 - 2436 คุ ้ ม เจ้ า บุ รี รั ต น์ มี ค วามส� ำ คั ญ ทั้ ง ทางด้ า น ประวัตศิ าสตร์ ด้านสถาปัตยกรรม และด้านสภาพแวดล้อม ต่อเมืองเชียงใหม่ ด้วยเจ้าบุรีรัตน์เป็นต�ำแหน่งส�ำคัญ ทางการปกครองอันดับสาม รองจากเจ้าหลวงเชียงใหม่ และเจ้าอุปราช
Khum Chao Burirat (Maha-in) is a two-story building made half of masonry and half of wood. The first floor was built with thick bricks laid in a curved shape and smoothly mortared with the terrace surrounded. Building style is a mix between Manila House and colonial style architecture which is well-known among colony countries. The upstairs is wooden with Gable roof and Hipped roof covering all areas of the surrounding terrace. It is the example of British architecture in Chiang Mai at the early age. It was assumed that British Forestry Company was responsible for the construction of Khum Chao Burirat in the year between 1889-1893.
Wat Phan Tao (Phan Tao temple) วัดพันเตา วั ด พั น เตา เดิ ม เป็ น หอค� ำ ของพระเจ้ า มโหตร ประเทศ เป็นอาคารไม้สักทั้งหลัง ตามสถาปัตยกรรมแบบ เชียงแสน มีซุ้มประตูประดับไม้แกะสลักรูปนกยูง อันเป็น สัญลักษณ์ของเจ้านายฝ่ายเหนือ ดูวิจิตรงดงาม จุดเด่นที่ นักท่องเที่ยวมักให้ความสนใจคือรั้วประตูขนาดเล็กขนาด เพียงหนึ่งคนเดิน ในอดีตบริเวณนีถ้ กู ใช้เป็นทีต่ งั้ เตาหลอมในการหล่อ “พระอัฏฐารส” (พระพุทธรูปยืน) เพื่อประดิษฐานในวิหาร วัดเจดียห์ ลวง เนือ่ งจากองค์พระขนาดใหญ่ และต้องหลอม พร้อมกันให้เสร็จจึงได้ใช้เตาเป็นจ�ำนวนนับพัน เป็นที่มา ของชื่อ วัดพันเตา อีกที่มาหนึ่งของชื่อวัดนี้คือ เดิมคนเชียงใหม่เรียก สถานที่แห่งนี้ว่า “วัดปันเต้า” (พันเท่า) หมายถึงการมา ท�ำบุญเพียงครัง้ เดียว ทว่าให้ได้บญ ุ กุศลกลับไปเป็นพันเท่า ต่อมาได้เพี้ยนเป็น “พันเตา”
Wat Phan Tao was originally a Chiang Saenstyled gilded house made of Teak, that belonged to Phrachao Mahottara Prathet. Its arched entrance is decorated with exquisite sculptured wood in a shape of a peacock which was the symbol of Northern kings. One thing that always attracts tourists is the small gate that fits only one person. In the past, this area was used to locate the furnace for casting Phra Attarot, or a standing Buddha Image so that the image could be easily transfer to Wat Chedi Luang’s chapel nearby. Since the image was large in size, thousand of furnaces were used. This is the reason why the temple was given its name “Phan Tao” or “thousands of furnaces”. Another source was says that, Phan Tao means Thousand times which implies that making merit only once, thousands good deeds would be given in return. Later, the name was slightly distorted to “Pan Tao”.
Wat Chedi Luang (Chedi Luang temple) วัดเจดีย์หลวง วัดเจดียห์ ลวงตัง้ อยู่ ณ ใจกลางเมืองเชียงใหม่ เป็นที่ ประดิษฐานเจดีย์ใหญ่ที่สุดในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ สร้างขึ้นใน รัชสมัยพระเจ้าแสนเมืองมากษัตริยอ์ งค์ท่ี 7 แห่งราชวงศ์มงั ราย ต่อมาพระยาติโลกราชโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ชา่ งขยายเจดียใ์ ห้สงู และกว้างกว่าเดิม ปรับรูปทรงเป็น แบบโลหะปราสาทของ ลังกา รูปลักษณ์ทรงเจดียแ์ บบพุกามดัดแปลง ต่อมาในสมัย พระนางจิ ร ะประภาก็ ไ ด้ ต ่ อ เติ ม อี ก เมื่ อ เกิ ด เหตุ ก ารณ์ แผ่นดินไหวจึงเป็นเหตุให้ยอดเจดีย์หักโค่นลง ภายในวัดเจดียห์ ลวงมีตน้ ไม้สงู ใหญ่ชอื่ ว่า “ต้นยางนา” ถือเป็นไม้สำ� คัญ ด้วยเป็น “ไม้หมายเมือง” กล่าวคือ เป็นต้น ไม้ขนาดใหญ่ที่สามารถมองเห็นได้แม้ในระยะไกลเพื่อ น�ำทางผูค้ นเข้าสูใ่ จกลางเมือง อาจเป็นต้นไม้ทปี่ ลูกขึน้ เพือ่ ให้เกิดการจดจ�ำสถานที่นั้นๆ
Wat Chedi Luang is located in Chiang Mai city center. In the temple compound is the Chiang Mai’s biggest pagoda standing gracefully. It was built in a reign of Phra Chao Saen Muang Ma, the 7th King of Mangrai dynasty and it was later extended the height and width by Phra Chao Tilokarat (adjusting the shape to Lanka’s Loha Prasat style). In 1545, in the reign of Phra Nang Chira Prapha Maha Thewee, the upper part of the structure collapsed after an earthquake. Later, the broken top was renovated. In Wat Chedi Luang stands a big tall tree called “Ton Yang Na” (Dipterocarpus alatus Roxb.), which is significantly considered as “Mai Mhai Muang”. ‘Mai’ is a tree. ‘Mhai Muang’ means to mark the location in town. This kind of tree is massively tall and can be seen in the distance so that it could guide people to the center of the city. It is assumed that this tree was planted as a purpose for people to remember the place.
Tha Phae Gate ประตูท่าแพ ประตูท่าแพ เป็นประตูเดียวที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นใหม่ โดยประตูนี้ถือเป็นประตูเศรษฐกิจของเมือง ค�ำว่า “ท่าแพ” หมายถึง ท่าของแพ ในสมัยก่อน ท่าน�้ำจะอยู่ ที่แม่น�้ำปิง นักเดินทางจะจอดแพหรือเรือไว้ที่ท่าน�้ำ และผ่านเข้าเมืองที่ประตูนี้ ประตูนี้ถือเป็นจุดท่องเที่ยว และแลนด์มาร์ค ส�ำคัญของเมือง เป็นประตูทเี่ ปิดตลอดเวลา มีความเชือ่ ว่า ประตูนี้จะเปิดรับเงินทองและความโชคดี ในขณะ เดียวกัน เพือ่ ป้องกันสิง่ ไม่ดเี ข้าสูต่ วั เมือง จึงให้มี “ตะแล๋ว” ท�ำจากไม้ไผ่สาน ท�ำหน้าทีเ่ หมือนยันต์ แขวนไว้บริเวณ ประตูทางเข้า Tha Phae Gate is the only gate that was newly made on the same location of the ancient one. It is considered the city’s economic gate. The word “Tha Phae” means a raft pier. In the old time, the pier was at the Ping river. It was where the travelers would park their rafts or boats and then walk through this gate to enter the city. This gate has been considered a Chiang Mai’s significant tourist attraction and landmark. It is believed that this gate opens at all time to call in wealth and luck as well as to prevent the city from bad luck. “Ta Leaw”, a Lanna’s talisman made from bamboo, is hung over the gate to prevent all those misfortunes.
Ka Tam Corner แจ่งก๊ะต�ำ๊ แจ่งก๊ะต�ำ๊ หรือแจ่งขะต�ำ๊ เป็นแจ่งทางทิศตะวันออก เฉียงใต้ เป็นมุมเมืองทีอ่ ยูต่ ำ่� สุด ดังนัน้ จึงเป็นบริเวณทีม่ ปี ลา ชุกชุมมาก ในอดีตผูค้ นมักจะมาดักปลาโดยใช้ขะต�ำ๊ เครือ่ ง มือจับปลาชนิดหนึ่ง มุมเมืองแห่งนี้จึงได้ชื่อว่า แจ่งก๊ะต�๊ำ Ka Tam Corner or Chang Kha Tam is the corner on the southeast direction which is in the lowest area of the city. Consequently, plenty of fish lived around this area. In the old days, local people always came to catch fish here by using Ka Tam (a fishing tool). Later, Ka Tam became the name of this corner.
Ku Huang Corner แจ่งกู่เฮือง จากประตูแสนปรุงมาถึงแจ่งกูเ่ ฮือง มุมเมืองแห่ง นี้ตั้งอยู่ในทักษาอันเป็นกาลกิณีตามความเชื่อโบราณ บริเวณนีจ้ งึ ไม่มกี จิ การใดๆ แจ่งกูเ่ ฮืองอยูท่ ศิ ตะวันตก เฉียงใต้ “กู่” หมายถึง ที่บรรจุกระดูก “เฮือง” เป็นชื่อ ทหารที่ดูแลนักโทษคนส�ำคัญในสมัยพญามังราย เมื่อ นายเฮืองเสียชีวิตลง จึงได้น�ำกระดูกมาฝังยังแจ่งนี้ ด้วยพื้นที่นี้เคยเป็นบ้านของนายเฮือง จึงเป็นที่มาของ ชื่อแจ่ง From Saen Pung Gate, travelling west to the next corner named Ku Huang Corner, this area was believed the direction of misfortune (the southwest of the city). Therefore, there have hardly been any businesses seen around this area. The origin of the name ‘Ku Huang’ is that ‘Ku’ refers to a mausoleum in which the ashes and cremation remains of the dead bodies are kept. ‘Huang’ was the name of an important soldier who was in charge of the prisoners in the reign of Phaya Mangrai. When ‘Huang’ passed away, his bones were buried at this corner. Another reason is that he once built a house and lived in this area.
Nong Buak Hard (Buak Hard Public Park) สวนสาธารณะหนองบวกหาด สวนสาธารณะหนองบวกหาด หรือคนในพื้นที่ มักเรียกสัน้ ๆ ว่า “หนองบวกหาด” เป็นสวนสาธารณะ แห่งเดียวภายในคูเมืองชั้นใน เปิดตั้งแต่ 8 โมงเช้า ถึง 3 ทุ่ม ค�ำว่า “บวก” หมายถึง แอ่งน�ำ้ ส่วนค�ำว่า “หาด” คือ ต้นไม้ชนิดหนึ่ง ภายในสวนสาธารณะแห่งนี้ มี พร้อมด้วยอุปกรณ์ออกก�ำลังกาย ทั้งยังมีอาหารท้อง ถิ่นจัดจ�ำหน่ายอีกด้วย สถานที่นี้จึงมิใช่เพียงสถานที่ ออกก�ำลังกายอย่างเดียว หากแต่ยังเหมาะแก่การมา พักผ่อนทั้งกับเพื่อนและครอบครัว Buak Hard Public Park or Nong Buak Hard shortly called by local people opens from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ‘Buak’ is a local word referring to a pond. ‘Hard’ is the name of a tree, which was abundant in this area in the old days. Inside the park provides fitness equipment and relaxing areas for a family.
Chiang Mai Gate ประตูเชียงใหม่ ในอดีต ประตูนใี้ ช้เป็นประตูสำ� หรับการเดินทาง เข้าออกเมืองเชียงใหม่ บริเวณประตูเชียงใหม่มตี ลาดที่ เปิดตลอด 24 ชัว่ โมง จึงเป็นทีน่ ยิ มชมชอบของนักท่องเทีย่ ว ด้วยเป็นตลาดทีม่ อี าหารท้องถิน่ ให้ได้ลมิ้ ลองมากมาย In the old time, this gate was used as the city’s main entrance for the visitors to enter and as the exit for Chiang Mai people travelling to other market where tourists can try delicious local foods.
Saen Pung Gate ประตูแสนปรุง ประตูแสนปรุง ชาวเมืองในอดีตเรียกกันว่า ประตูผี ทัง้ นีก้ ด็ ว้ ยสาเหตุของการสร้างเพือ่ ใช้เป็นทางสัญจรขนศพ ไปเผานอกเมือง สังเกตได้วา่ วัดหรือศาสนสถานในเขตเมือง เก่านั้นไม่มีสถานที่ประกอบพิธีฌาปนกิจด้วยคติความเชื่อ ดังนั้นจึงต้องน�ำศพออกไปทางประตูนี้ เพื่อไปประกอบพิธี ฌาปนกิจบริเวณนอกเขตเมืองเก่า ทั้งทิศนี้ก็ถือว่าเป็นทิศ อวมงคล การค้าขายในทิศทางแห่งนี้จึงไม่ค่อยมีปรากฏ เท่าใดนัก Saen Pung Gate located at about 300 metres west of Chiang Mai Gate was known as ‘Pratu Phee’ or ‘Ghost Gate’ by local people in the old days. The reason under this name was that it was built to be the exit for taking the dead bodies to the crematorium outside the city area. At this gate, you can see another ‘Ton Yang Na’. However, the purpose of having ‘Ton Yang Na’ here was not only for marking the place but also for the security reason. In the ancient time, it was used for the soldiers to observe the situations outside the city walls. Making use of the extreme height of the tree, they would climb up to inspect if there were any other foreign armies marching close by.
Wat Srisuphan (Srisuphan temple) วัดศรีสุพรรณ วัดศรีสพุ รรณ เป็นวัดทีม่ อี โุ บสถเงินแห่งแรกของโลก ชาวชุมชนต่างร่วมแรงร่วมใจสืบสานเครื่องเงินชุมชนวัว ลาย เนื่ อ งด้ ว ยวั ด ศรี สุ พ รรณตั้ ง อยู ่ ท ่ า มกลางชุ ม ชน หัตถกรรมช่างหล่อ หัตถกรรมเครือ่ งเงิน เครือ่ งเขิน บนถนน วัวลาย ทางวัดจึงมีแนวคิดสืบสานภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่น ด้วย การรวบรวมภูมิปัญญาชาวบ้านจัดตั้งเป็น กลุ่มหัตถศิลป์ ล้านนาวัดศรีสุพรรณ มีการจัดตั้งศูนย์ศึกษาศิลปะไทย โบราณ สล่าสิบหมู่ล้านนาวัดศรีสุพรรณ จุดเด่นของวัดคืออุโบสถที่ทั้งภายนอกและภายใน ประดับตกแต่งด้วยหัตถกรรมเครือ่ งเงิน มีลวดลายอ่อนช้อย งดงาม ภายในได้ประดิษฐานพระประธาน ที่ชาวบ้านเรียก ว่า “พระเจ้าเจ็ดตื้อ” พระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัย เนื้อทอง สัมฤทธิ์ โดยใต้ฐานอุโบสถ เขตพัทธสีมา ฝังสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ และของมีคา่ ลงคาถาอาคม เครือ่ งรางของคลังไว้กว่า ๕๐๐ ปี ด้วยเหตุนี้ตามคติความเชื่อและขนบจารีตล้านนาจึง สงวนมิให้สุภาพสตรีขึ้นไปยังอุโบสถหลังนี้
Wat Srisuphan, also known as the first silver chapel in the world, is located in Wualai, the old community on Wualai road which is well-known for silverwares, lacquerwares and handicrafts. The people in the community strongly work together to reserve traditional silverwares. Since Wat Srisuphan is situated in the middle of the community, the temple agreed with the idea of reserving and carrying on artwork heritage and local wisdom. So the temple’s learning center named Wat Srisuphan Lanna Craft Group and Ancient Thai Arts Learning Center, Lanna Sala Sibmoo was established. The grand interior and exterior of Wat Srisuphan’s chapel were beautifully and intricately decorated with hand crafted silver. The silver chapel houses a bronze Buddha image called ‘Phra Chao Chet Teur’ in the attitude of subduing Mara. Under the base of the chapel around the monastic boundary buried enchanted sacred items and valuables. According to Lanna’s belief and tradition, this is the reason why women are not allowed to go inside the chapel’s area.
Wat Phuak Taem (Phuak Taem Temple) วัดพวกแต้ม จากหลักฐานที่สืบพบสันนิษฐานได้ว่า วัดพวกแต้ม สร้างขึ้นในราว พ.ศ. 2026 โดยค�ำว่า “พวก” หมายถึง หัวหน้าหมู่บ้านซึ่งเป็นขุนนางยศต�่ำ ดังนั้น พวกแต้ม จึง อาจเป็นขุนนางผูม้ หี น้าทีค่ วบคุมงานช่าง โดยเฉพาะการขีด เขียนภาพจิตรกรรม การลงรักปิดทอง ในยุค “เก็บผักใส่ซา้ เก็บข้าใส่เมือง” เจ้ากาวิละได้ กวาดต้อนผู้คนจากหลายที่มารวมกัน โดยกลุ่มหนึ่งในนั้น มี ส ล่ า หรื อ ช่ า งเครื่ อ งโลหะมาด้ ว ย นั ก วิ ช าการด้ า น วัฒนธรรมสันนิษฐานศิลปกรรมด้านโลหะของล้านนา หรือ “คัวตอง” อาจก่อก�ำเนิดขึ้นในช่วงนี้ วั ด พวกแต้ ม เป็ น ชุ ม ชนช่ า งท� ำ ฉั ต รพวกแต้ ม ภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่น ที่มีผลงานฉัตรปรากฏทั่วไป ตั้งแต่วัด พระธาตุดอยสุเทพ วัดพระสิงห์ ตลอดจนวัดไทยในต่าง ประเทศ ภายในวัดยังมีพิพิธภัณฑ์ชุมชนที่รวบรวมผลงาน คัวตองด้านพุทธศิลป์และหัตถศิลป์อนั วิจติ ร ทัง้ ยังได้รบั ทุน สนับสนุนจากองค์การยูเนสโก ชุมชนพวกแต้ม นับว่าเป็นชุมชนช่างท�ำฉัตรและคัว ตองที่เหลืออยู่แห่งเดียวในประเทศไทย ภูมิปัญญานี้จึงนับ เป็นสมบัติทางด้านวัฒนธรรมอันล�้ำค่าของล้านนาที่ควร ช่วยกันสนับสนุนและสืบสานต่อไปตราบชั่วลูกชั่วหลาน
Wat Phuak Taem assumingly was built in 1388. ‘Phuak’ means a chief of a village. So, ‘Phuak Taem’, a dialect, can refer to a noble man who controls the craftsmen at work, especially in the work of painting, lacquering and gilding. In the era of city restoration after being abandoned for a long time, King Kawila gathered people from many different places together. One group of the people was a group of artisans who were specialized in making brass ornaments or ‘Krua Thong’ in Chiang Mai dialect. Wat Puak Taem then has become the community of craftsmen who are specialized in making Puak Taem Chat (a tiered umbrella). Their distinctive works can be seen in many important places including Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, Wat Phra Singh as well as the Thai temples in foreign countries. At present, there is a museum in the temple that collect all works as a showcase for different kinds of Krua Thong works including Buddhist arts and brass handicrafts. The museum has been financially supported by UNESCO. Puak Taem community is the only Chat and Krua Thong making community left in Thailand. Therefore, this kind of local wisdoms is worth being perpetuated as a precious cultural heritage of Lanna.
