#TheTribeExclusive featuring Kalux
#TheTribeExclusive throws it back with this feature of award-winning hitmaker Kalux who is no doubt the pride of Otjiwarongo.
Since breaking onto the scene, his musical success and philanthropic status have earned him a street named after him in the town where he was raised, making him one of only a handful of Namibian musicians to be honoured in that manner.
Kalux, who was born in Outjo, says: “It was really a good feeling, it still is. I can go back whenever I’m stressed, go to my street, sit down and thank God for giving me the talent to do good work that people appreciate enough to give me a street in my name.”
While he has always remained true to his signature sound which can be described as a mashup of various Namibian genres, Kalux is not afraid to experiment and his international collaborations are proof of this. In the past he has worked with African musicians like Zambian ‘Amarula’ hitmaker Roberto and Cameroonian rap sensation Stanley Enow.
On receiving the 2018 Male Artist of the Year Award, Kalux said that people underestimated him because he was coming from a small town. “People believe that only if you are based in Windhoek will you make it.”
He remains committed to motivating others from his hometown to think big and to believe that they, too, can make it irrespective of where they come from.
On what has helped him get this far, he says, “I think I’m somebody who believes in myself more than you know. I’m also lucky that other people believe in me and I pray a lot.”
Kalux is a big advocate for giving back to the community, and because of his philanthropic efforts in Otjiwarongo he has also been appointed as an Ambassador for Education in the Otjozondjupa Region. He is very passionate about entertaining young people in his region and using his music to inspire them to work hard and make something of themselves.
He continues to make music that young and old can relate to and he hopes to make an impact through his work.
