EDIT
Smart city, now smart water
Pay for the water you consume. Not more, not less.
The civic body in Coimbatore is all set to fix 200 water meters in RS Puram area to calculate water consumption for individual houses. These smart water meters will automatically transit water consumption amounts by residents to a central server to arrive at accurate water charges. A good move. Pay for as much water as you consume. Rather than all consumption being equally charged to everyone, it makes sense to segregate usage and link charges to actual consumption, just like it is done for electricity and piped LPG cooking gas. After completing most of the work on the distribution system to improve water supply under the 24x7 drinking water supply improvement scheme, the Coimbatore Corporation has decided to fix smart water meters. The plan is to fix 200 meters of three varieties – 100 of the multi-jet variety, and 50 each of ultrasonic type and electromagnetic type, to study their performance over a trial period of six to nine months. After that it will be decided which of these meters is most effective for being deployed on a larger scale in other parts of the core city across its 60 wards. Apart from automation on the consumption front for benefit of consumers, these smart meters will serve another purpose – to study the quantity of water flowing into tanks, the outflow, the pressure of flow and level of water in the tanks. The advanced metering infrastructure is one more feather in Coimbatore’s cap. The city leads the way on many fronts and this is yet another, the smart way. Pay for what you use. Not more, not less.
