The famed Jog Falls, India’s answer to Niagara Falls, lie in the neighbourig state of Karnataka. If you haven’t yet been there, now is the time, when the falls are in full spate, a spectacular plunge from a gushing height of 488 meters, cascading down in an awe-inspiring vision. From June till September, the region witnesses heavy rainfall, the beauty of the place a delight to behold during the monsoon season, and a major seasonal tourist attraction. One of the highest waterfalls in India, Jog Falls is one of the major tourist attractions. Jog Falls is formed by the Sharavathi River, gushing down from a height of 253 meters (830 feet), making it the second-highest plunge waterfall in India (the first being the Nohkalikai Falls with a drop of 335 meters (1100 ft) in Meghalaya). Sharavathi river originates at Ambuthirtha in Thirthahalli taluk, flows north-west through the Western Ghats forming the Jog Falls before joining the Arabian Sea at Honavar. “The Jog Falls Falling Point” view spot is located near Sagara which comes under the Shimoga district of Karnataka. Joga is a Kannada word meaning falls, and comes from the Kannada word javugu which means marsh (wet). Jog Falls is also known by some other names such as Gerusoppe falls, Joga jalapatha and Jogada gundi in Kannada language. Attractions around Jog Falls include Honnemaradu, situated on the backwaters of River Sharavathi. This island formed with the backwater of Linganmakki Dam is famous for water sports. There is also Tunga Anicut Dam,

situated 15 km from Shimoga, built across the river Tungabhadra, where you can enjoy boat trips around the lake. Also make time to visit the Lion and Tiger Reserve, about 12 km from Shimoga towards Jog Falls and experience a safari there. Apart from these, you can also explore Sagara, a small town in Shimoga district, 30 km from Jog Falls, which is home to several ancient temples. Or Siddapura, a small town in Kodagu district, providing captivating views of the Sahyadri mountain ranges. Or Sirsi, a town in Uttara Kannada district, which is like a hill-station set amidst emerald green forests and several waterfalls.
