22 Mt Kilimanjaro

Mt Kilimanjaro Trekking The Climb Just three degrees south of the equator is the 5,896 m/19,340 ft high, permanently snow-capped Mt Kilimanjaro - Africa’s highest mountain. This stunning peak offers one of the world’s best opportunities to climb at high altitude without the need of technical climbing ability. Any normally fit, healthy person prepared to push themselves both physically and mentally should be able to complete the ascent to the crater rim and then on to Uhuru Peak, the ‘Roof of Africa’. While the destination remains the same, there are two options to get there: Marangu Route This five-day climb is the most popular and direct Mt Kilimanjaro route, and the only one serviced by mountain huts to offer protection from the elements. Although it can be busy, the route is well maintained and makes for a breathtaking hike to the summit. Trek through vast grasslands, pass giant cacti and discover alpine meadows set against a background of mountain peaks. As with all Kili hikes, prepare yourself for an early morning, adrenaline-filled final walk to Uhuru Peak. Machame Route This six-day climb is the most popular of the camping routes and follows gradually rising paths through dense forests and moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. From here the trek continues beneath the glaciated precipices of Kibo’s south face, providing striking views of the southern icefields. Diverse vegetation lines the pathways, making it one of the most scenic of all the Mt Kilimanjaro routes. Camp out at night, enjoy the scenery and feel the exhilaration of achievement while marvelling at the views from the top. Porter's Policy… On our Mt Kilimanjaro climbs we employ porters to help carry baggage and equipment. We believe that local people should benefit from our travels, which is why we have a Porter’s Policy to ensure that working conditions and wages are kept fair. Our full policy, covering loads, wages, accommodation, clothing and medical care can be viewed at: intrepidtravel.com/porters
