Innovative Holidays & Adventures

Nepal - The Mighty Himalaya “The mountains had bestowed on us their beauties, and we adored them with a child’s simplicity and revered them with a monks veneration of the divine. Annapurna, to which we had gone empty handed, was a treasure on which we would live the rest of our days!” - Maurice Herzog, in ‘Annapurna’ conquest of the first 8,000m peak, 1950.

The Himalaya separates the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan plateau. It stretches from Assam, in eastern India, and includes both the Karakoram and the Hindu Kush. It is both the highest and youngest chain of mountains in the world, encompassing a region of deep religious and spiritual beliefs as well as an amazing diversity of people. Trekking in Nepal will expose you to a country that has captured the imagination of mountaineers and explorers such as Herzog, Shipton, Hillary and Bonington for over 100 years. Hospitable locals welcome you to their beautiful country and once you commence your trek through the valleys and hills, you find villages where traditional ways have not changed for generations. Trekking allows you to experience the great diversity of Nepal, with its breathtaking scenery, fast-moving rivers, stunning rhododendron forests and rich wildlife. The terrain varies greatly, from tropical jungle to high glaciated mountains and, for much of the time, the towering peaks of the Himalaya provide a stunning and everchanging backdrop. Trekking does not mean mountain climbing – although we do offer several peaks if you wish to take this challenge; but it does provide both a physical and mental challenge, rewarding you with a rejuvenated spirit, peace of mind and, often, a very different perspective on the world in which you live. Above all, trekking Nepal will leave you with a great sense of achievement. 2

Innovative Holidays & Adventures About Active Travel

Accommodation & inclusions

Active Travel is Australia’s most innovative tour operator. Established in 1982, we operate a fascinating range of award-winning holidays all over the world. We were the first Australian company to run cycling tours in China and have since developed a wide range of unusual and rewarding holidays to the world’s most exciting destinations.

On our lodge treks we offer 4-star hotels in Kathmandu; in other parts of the country we stay in comfortable tourist class hotels or the ‘best available’. We provide a free trek pack (sleeping bag, thermal liner, down jacket, rain poncho, air pillow, windproof jacket) including a T-shirt and duffel bag for you to keep. We include delicious, healthy meals together with a special welcome dinner. Local flights to/from the starting point of your trek are also included, as well as all ground transportation and sightseeing in Kathmandu. In fact, it’s probably fair to say we offer more inclusions than any other Nepal trekking company.

We operate textile tours to Indochina, walking holidays in Europe and Turkey and educational journeys in the Middle East. In addition we offer a unique programme of riverboat journeys on a number of rivers, including the Mekong, Ganges and Brahmaputra – and we are the Australian agents for One Ocean, a leading Antarctic expedition operator. Active Travel is also a long-time partner of the Australian National University (ANU), in Canberra, and each year we operate a stimulating programme of tours in conjunction with its Centre for Continuing Education – from literary trips to England to painting holidays in the Greek Islands. Our connection with Nepal goes back many decades and we are delighted to present this exciting range of lodge-based and camping treks showcasing the best of this stunning Himalayan destination.

Who travels with Active Travel? Essentially anyone who enjoys a well thought out itinerary offering all the essentials but without being over-organised. People who enjoy taking time to really get to know the place, exploring the markets, sampling regional dishes and meeting the locals. We attract people from all walks of life including families and seasoned travellers – both young and old. They all share a common interest in travelling ‘outside the square’. We are proud to say that guests from our original tour to China in 1982 are still our customers – a quarter of a century of client loyalty.

Our way of travelling Our experienced partners in Nepal, have been operating since 1980 and pioneered many of the trips in this brochure. Our treks are fully inclusive and nothing is left to chance. We see ourselves as facilitators, introducing you not only to the wonders of the Himalaya but also allowing time for you make your own discoveries. Small, international groups are our specialty (maximum 15 but usually less) and all treks will operate for a minimum of two people.

Trek Leaders & Crew Our Trek Leaders are all Nepalese and many have worked with us for years. They are well-educated and their knowledge and enthusiasm is infectious. We offer a very high leader/client ratio so you can be sure of personal attention throughout your trek. Our attentive crew is fundamental to the success of your trip and they are all well looked after. We provide them with a full kit including warm high altitude gear, blankets, boots, jackets, gloves, socks and snow goggles.

Responsible Travel Like many of our travellers, we are well aware of the positive and negative impacts of tourism. When selecting ground operators we consider not only their professionalism and their attitude towards environmental issues. We prefer to work with small companies where the revenue earned from our tours stays in the country of origin. Through our Savanh Foundation we support several projects around the world including a school in Sri Lanka, a building restoration programme in Luang Prabang – and cyclone relief in Burma. In Nepal our partners pioneered the use of kerosene stoves on treks and co-founded an eco-tourism training organisation.

“An excellent holiday and I enjoyed every moment of my time in Nepal. The trek was exceptional value compared to other companies I looked at. I have no hesitation in recommending your trekking company to other travellers”. D.W. Balgowlah, NSW (Base Camp) 2009

Australian-owned and proud of it Corporate takeovers are now common in the travel industry and we frequently hear of new mergers and acquisitions. We are happy to say that Active Travel is a trueblue, privately-owned Australian company where YOU are the focus. As Gandhi once said ... “our customers are the reason for our existence.” And it sums up the Active Travel approach perfectly!

Classic Lodge Trekking Classic Lodge Trekking There are now so many good lodges on the main trekking trails in the Annapurna and Everest regions that it makes sense to use these facilities where they exist. It is also cheaper for you, as we don’t need a large self-contained crew to carry all our camping equipment and the field kitchen. Most importantly, these lodges are often family-run extensions of the family home, so it gives you a wonderful opportunity to interact with local people each evening. Most of our lodges have electricity and we provide twin-bedded rooms wherever possible.

Your Trek Pack On all our Lodge treks we provide a free trek pack including a down jacket, rain jacket, rain poncho, sleeping bag & thermal liner. In addition there’s a T-shirt and kit bag for you to keep. On rafting trips we also include a sleeping mat, air pillow, helmet and life-jacket.

We turn south and trek down to Poon Hill (3232m) where we enjoy a last look at these silent giants before making our way back to Pokhara through several charming villages. We fly back to Kathmandu where there’s a final afternoon to explore the old city. 12

Remote Treks & Mountaineering Around Manaslu 21 days ex Kathmandu (WITH 16 DAY lodge TREK) The Manaslu region, north of the celebrated Gorkha country, is one of the most dramatic areas of western Nepal. We follow the Budhi Gandaki river valley upstream, moving from sub-tropical forest into the dry Tibetan zone, enjoying spectacular views of Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli - and Manaslu istelf, which towers above us at 8156m. We begin in Kathmandu, meeting our fellow trekkers and enjoying a sightseeing tour of this historic city. A spectacular drive takes us to the trailhead at Arughat Bazaar, where our trekking crew joins us, and soon we are hiking north along the valley, passing through isolated farming communities and numerous small villages. As the river turns west, tracking close to the Tibetan border, we visit the remote communities at Nyak, Namrung and Lho, with the Tibetan peaks forming an ever-present backdrop to the north. At Samdo we glimpse an ancient Buddhist culture as we contour around the northern shoulder of Manaslu. Crossing Larkya La (5213m), with its prayer flags fluttering in the wind, we descend through the enchanting meadows of Bhimtang before reaching the rhododendron and pine forests around Karche. We arrive at the busy village of Dharapani and continue via Tal to Bhulbule where we rejoin the road and drive back to Kathmandu via Besishahar. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek 28 days ex Kathmandu (WITH 21 DAY camping TREK) At 8586m, Kanchenjunga is the world’s third highest mountain. This trek offers a wonderful variety of scenery including tropical lowlands, fast-flowing rivers and icy glaciers. After a day in Kathmandu we fly to Biratnagar and then travel by road to Phidam. Our trek begins in Taplejung, overlooking the Tamur River and for much of our first week we walk alongside the river, one of Nepal’s easternmost watercourses, which originates in the Kanchenjunga Glacier. There are numerous small villages in the area, allowing plenty of contact with the local people. Climbing gradually, we continue north to Gunsa, on the banks of the Gunsa Khola, and pass through rhododendron forests which in March and April will be ablaze with red and pink blooms. We reach Kambachen (3700m), in the shadows of Mount Jannu (7710m), the highest satellite peak of Kanchenjunga and from here on we encounter few people as the region is Yak pastureland with flocks of blue sheep grazing on the sheer cliffs. From Kambachen it’s another two days to Base Camp at Pangpema, our highest point at 5100m, where we enjoy glorious views of Nepal Peak, Chang Himal, Drohma and Kanchenjunga itself. We have a day to explore the Kanchenjunga

glaciers and the barren valleys that surround the mountain before descending to Taplejung via an alternative route. We then make our way back to Biratnagar for the return flight to Kathmandu, where there’s a final day to explore the old city. Itinerary Day 1 Arrive Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel. Mera Peak Expedition 24 days ex Kathmandu (WITH 17 DAY lodge & camping expedition) Mera Peak lies southeast of the fabled Khumbu region and the trek to Base Camp is as exciting and challenging as the climb to the summit. We begin in Kathmandu with a traditional Nepali feast followed by a morning tour of this charming capital. We then travel by bus to Jiri and walk east, across rolling hills and valleys, following in the footsteps of the early mountaineers. At Pike we enjoy a spectacular panorama including Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse and Everest - and on a clear day we can see the craggy outline of Kanchenjunga over in the east. Following the old Sherpa trails we trek into the Hinku Valley, a region of incredibly steep alpine meadows and pastures. There may be snow on several passes, which will be good training for the climb ahead. We spend two nights at picturesque riverside locations and there will be plenty of time for acclimatisation and instruction in technical climbing methods. We begin our slow ascent towards the summit, reaching Mera La at 5415m before making our high camp on a rocky outcrop that divides the Mera and Naulekh Glaciers. This is one of the best views in Nepal; a panorama of Kanchenjunga, Chamlang, Makalu and Baruntse sweeping round from the east, while due north Everest peers over the crumbling rock bands that make up the south face of Lhotse. The peaks of AmaDablam, Cho Oyu and Kangtega

dominate in the west. We make our final push towards the summit (weather permitting) and then descend to Lukla for our flight back to Kathmandu. Itinerary Day 1 Arrive Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel. Remote Camping Treks & Mountaineering

Chulu West Expedition 27 days ex Kathmandu (WITH 23 DAY camping expedition) Chulu is the highest mountain in the Manang Himal, with a massif that actually boasts four summits, two of which are on the western side. The highest of these, at some 6419m, is our goal on this challenging and spectacular trek. We begin in Kathmandu, where we meet our fellow trekkers and enjoy a tour of the old city. We then drive east to Besishahar, where our trek begins, taking us first through terraced farmlands and the high Marsyangdi Valleys before entering the domain of Annapurna II and Annapurna IV. We reach Pisang, with its quaint stone houses and above the village there is a Gompa where colourful prayer flags flutter in the wind. The Manang Valley marks the start of the ‘rainshadow’ effect of the Himalaya, with steep, bare hillsides deeply cut by the rain and snow melt - a startling contrast to the lowlands. There are excellent views of Annapurna II and III from the ridge above Manang, and the old town itself is full of character. We make our highest camp at Churi Ledar (4250m) and trek to Chulu West Base Camp, where we prepare for the summit. We ascend to Camp One, and from Camp Two we make our attempt on the summit, at 6419m. We then trek to the Thorung La, at 5416m, and descend to Muktinath for a well-deserved rest. We continue south, along the Kali Kandaki Valley, 16

to Jomsom and Tatapani before reaching Nayapul where we drive back to Pokhara. The following day we fly back to Kathmandu, where our trip ends. Itinerary Day 1 Arrive Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel. ‘Real Experience Treks’ - for trekkers on a budget We have designed a range of treks in Nepal that will appeal to those on a tight budget, without all the inclusions on our Classic Lodge and Classic Camping programmes. You still enjoy all the support, back up and experience of our team in Nepal, but at rock bottom prices. While the day-to-day itineraries are the same as our more inclusive ‘Classic’ lodge and camping treks, you pay for a local taxi on arrival and departure and you stay in simple 2-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. You also order and pay for your meals, and in Kathmandu you are free to explore the city on your own or to

organise a day tour locally. We still provide a trek pack, but only with the basics – a sleeping bag, sleeping bag inner sheet and the duffel bag itself. If you need additional gear, such as a down jacket or rain jacket, we can easily assist with hiring equipment. Alternatively, you can bring your own gear. See the adjacent panel to get an idea of what you will be paying locally, to help you plan your ‘Real Experience’ budget trek in Nepal. (Prices marked with an asterisk* are approximate). The three treks below are our most popular options, but we do have others. Please contact us for details.
