The 45 km (28 mile) trek is usually covered in four days, arriving at Machu Picchu on the morning of day four. The trek is rated moderate and any reasonably fit person should be able to complete the route. However, hiking uphill (and downhill!) can be challenging, so the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it. While your group leader may not accompany you on the trek, you will be joined by a local guide and supported by a team of porters leaving you with only a small daypack to carry. Given the weather and altitude, hiking conditions are ideal during the drier months of May to September. October to April is cooler with more rainfall and is also less crowded. The classic Inca Trail is closed in February for regeneration. At that time, an alternative trekking route will be hiked.
