Innovative River Cruises and Expeditions

From the Ganges to the Irrawaddy “The river cruise was my highlight. I loved watching rural life and villages slowly pass by.... there was nothing I did not enjoy”. VC, Sydney. River travel has always been a favourite of ours and the tours we present provide our guests the opportunity to comprehensively explore exotic destinations without the drama of moving hotel every night. River travel is very different to blue water cruising; the focus is on the places we visit and the people we meet along the way. Generally, we enjoy a world away from television and mobile phones, allowing us to experience the leisurely pace of yesteryear along with all the comforts expected in our modern world. River travel enables you to access the more remote regions of our destinations – places well away from conventional tourist trails. For us, this means authentic cultural interaction and friendship. Importantly, our extensive knowledge and experience with river cruising has positioned us as a leader in Asian river travel. For you this means we provide accurate, timely and appropriate advice, an important element in getting your next holiday just right. Christine Pearson & Robert Fletcher Proprietors, Active Travel

About Active Travel Established in 1982, Active Travel is recognised as Australia’s most innovative travel company with a fascinating and diverse range of award-winning holidays. We began with cycling tours in China and now we have a wide range of unusual and rewarding holidays to the world’s most exciting destinations, including Nepal, Bhutan, India, Indochina, the Middle East, the icy wastes of the Arctic and Antarctica - not to mention a host of escorted special interest tours. 2

What is riverboat cruising? Riverboat cruising is not at all like blue water cruising. The ambiance is relaxed and friendly and there’s time to escape the rush of the 21st century and to focus on the pleasure of exploring, free from TV and other modern distractions. You are not confined to your boat and you discover what lies beyond the riverbank on frequent shore excursions with local guides to villages, markets, historic sites and

national parks. It is a time to unwind, relax and rediscover your world. Vessels are small (some with a maximum of just 24 passengers), but the spacious decks allow you to watch the countryside and villages as you glide by. Cabins are air-conditioned, with one or two beds, ensuite facilities and a sitting area. There are sun decks, saloon lounges, a dining room and bar and delicious meals offer a variety of local fare.

Quality control

Active Travel’s philosophy is based on providing consistent quality along with innovative itineraries. Our guests are from all walks of life from young couples to families to seasoned travellers, and they all share a common interest in travelling ‘away from the pack’. Our holidays offer carefully planned itineraries, personally selected accommodation, an appropriate amount of quirkiness, ample free time, and the benefit of years of Active Travel experience. Your journey is assured of success and enjoyment all the way. We are proud to say that guests from our original tour in 1982 are still our customers – decades of client loyalty.

Like any item, providing consistent quality is important and for us is a constant goal. Our staff regularly review the cruise boats presented here, the itineraries, hotels, ground suppliers, and overall content. Feedback from our guests is vital and we encourage your comments and suggestions at any time, on any aspect of our service. After all, if we aim to get it right we need to know what you expect. We have cruised on all the vessels presented in this brochure and we are regarded as the most experienced riverboat professionals in Australia today.

Bonus pre-tour accommodation

Like many of our travellers, we are well aware of the positive and negative impacts of tourism. When selecting ground operators and in-country partners, we consider not only their professionalism, but also their treatment of employees and their attitude towards environmental issues. We prefer to work with small local companies and family-owned businesses where the revenue earned from our tours stays in the country of origin.

Many of our cruises include one night’s free pre-cruise accommodation, to help you get you started. Look for the “FREE ACCOMMODATION” symbol on the touring pages. Of course you may want more time, in which case we can easily arrange additional accommodation and sightseeing. Some of our shorter cruises, such as the 3-day trip from Bagan to Mandalay in Burma, have been wrapped into a longer itinerary so that you experience all the highlights of the country you are visiting. The majority of our destinations have numerous attractions beyond the riverbanks and we can offer a number of suggestions for onward travel. Our knowledgeable staff is ready to assist planning your personal holiday adventure!

Currency and pricing As you browse our brochure you’ll find prices in Euros, US dollars and Australian dollars. Why is this? In some cases we contract these products in Euros or USD so rather than converting them into Australian dollars at an unattractive exchange rate when producing this brochure, we’ve kept them in their original currency to give you the best possible deal. To make it easy, you pay us in Australian dollars, based on the exchange rate of the day. That way, you save!

Pre tour information Naturally, you expect comprehensive information about your holiday and cruise. On deposit we provide pre-trip advice and detailed pre-trip documentation. We provide emergency contact details and we are always available to answer any question. It is your holiday and we want you to enjoy each moment.

Responsible travel

Through our ‘Savanh Foundation’ we support a number of projects around the world including the total refurbishment and operation of a school in Sri Lanka thatn was destroyed by the tsuinami in December 2004. We have also financed the restoration of a French colonial era house in Luang Prabang, once owned by the Lao royal family. In 2008 we raised over $35,000 for cyclone relief for several charity groups in Burma, following Tropical Cyclone Nargis.

“Wow! What an excellent holiday! We enjoyed every moment of our cruise on the Ganges. The crew were just fantastic and the boat was beautiful. I have no hesitation in recommending your company to other travellers”. LM. Picton, Australia (Bengal Ganga) 2010

Australian owned and proud of it Small, privately-owned Australian travel companies are becoming increasingly rare these days, leading to a decrease in choice, flexibility and variety of travel. Our aim is to provide you with the trip that you want and we are happy to make changes to suit your time and budget. As Gandhi said, “our customers are the reason for our existence.” which sums up the Active Travel approach perfectly. 3

Vietnam and Cambodia - The Lower Mekong The Mekong River Rising in Tibet, the 4880km long Mekong River snakes its way from the Himalaya through China, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia and emerges into the South China Sea as the ‘nine dragons’ of the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The river begins as a wild torrent and ends as a huge silt-depositing delta. Along its course thousands of local people farm, fish, trade, commute and worship in its waters, making it both an interesting river to sail along and a vital source of life. In 1866 the French explorer, Francis Garnier, was charged with mapping the Mekong with the intention of providing French Indochine access to the potential wealth in China, however he found the rapids, waterfalls and local warlords prevented the opening of a French trade route. Today, our riverboat journeys take you to the sprawling and vibrant Mekong Delta in Vietnam; quiet and seemingly remote Cambodia; the lower reaches in southern Lao visiting the falls that hampered Garnier; to the charming stretch near Luang Prabang – the last of the Lao kingdom.

Which cruise to take?

By combining our selection of cruises on the broad Lower Mekong with the small boats we use on the Upper Mekong, in Laos, it is now possible to travel a significant length of the river by comfortable passenger boat, something Garnier aspired to.

Our riverboats provide high levels of discreet service, all meals, comfortable air-conditioned cabins with en suite facilities, all sightseeing and shore excursions with an English-speaking guide. They are delightful vessels with spacious sun decks, lounges and dining rooms and all have a small complement of passengers, varying from just 10 cabins to a maximum of 27.

complex at Angkor. These voyages include a few days in the vibrant MekongDelta area of Vietnam, exploring floating markets, visiting home-based industries such as crafts and food production and making side-trips through the backwaters in local boats to fish farms and ancient houses. After crossing into Cambodia two days are spent experiencing the seductive landscapes of this beautiful country. A full day of sightseeing in Phnom Penh shows you the spectacular Palace, major temples, the National Museum, the Art Deco central market and you have the opportunity to visit the ‘killing fields’. You then continue into the picturesque Tonle River, passing a number of fishing villages along the way, before reaching your final destination of Siem Reap, access point to the great Khmer temple complex at Angkor Wat. Most cruises also operate in reverse, from Siem Reap to Saigon.

My Tho

The differences are mainly reflected in their design and ambiance and many reflect colonial styles of the 1920’s and 1930’s. There are small variations in some on-shore excursions, and all commence or conclude in Saigon. Depending on high or low water levels, the larger vessels may not be able to complete the crossing of Tonle Sap (Lake), so they conclude their programmes by coach or speedboat to Siem Reap.

Laos - The Upper Mekong The Upper Mekong The Lao section of the Mekong is characterised by verdant jungle clad hills, wide cultivated plains, small river towns, ancient history and interesting villages. The river here is narrower than in Cambodia and Vietnam with far fewer people utilising its waters. It winds through narrow and spectacular gorges, swirls over sandbars and spreads out in the wider sections. Jungle falls down to the river’s edge, where small clearings have been made for the few villages. In the south there are waterfalls and rapids known as the ‘4,000 Islands’, home to elusive freshwater dolphins. Here, and elsewhere in Laos, French colonial relics together with the remains of pre-Angkorian Wat Phou Temple (a UNESCO cultural site) and the early capital, Champasak, are found. The rugged terrain upstream once isolated the northern capital of Luang Prabang, now a UNESCO World Cultural site, worthy of more than an overnight stop. It is a charming and unique town with its wonderful ancient monasteries and temples that predominate the old quarter, which in turn is surrounded by rivers - the Mekong River on one side and a major tributary on the other.

Burma The Irrawaddy River For centuries, the Irrawaddy River has been Burma’s principal highway, shaping the country’s history, settlement patterns and economic development. By the ninth century a powerful kingdom had been established at Bagan, which eventually established control over both the Irrawaddy and Sitaung river valleys. By the time the British arrived, the river was in constant use as a major conduit for both people and produce and in 1865 the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company was founded. It grew to become the greatest river fleet in the world, and by the 1920’s there were over 600 boats carrying around 9 million people a year. It was during this period that Rudyard Kipling visited Burma and the theme embodied in his celebrated poem, “The Road to Mandalay”, is still very much evident today as you sail this busy waterway north to Mandalay, the country’s second largest city.

The Chindwin River

After being filled by tropical monsoons, the Chindwin soon empties into the Irrawaddy and thus offers only a limited season for cruise operations. It is also notoriously difficult to navigate with a labyrinth of sandbars and whirlpools – but for lovers of remote river travel, this is all part of the adventure and a journey along the Chindwin is not to be missed.

The Chindwin is a tributary of the Irrawaddy and flows entirely within Burma, spilling into the longer river a little to the south of Mandalay. What the Chindwin lacks in length, is made up in a wonderful variety of scenery including lush tropical jungles, sheer cliffs, misty-blue mountains and charming towns and villages. The upper reaches are quite narrow and bordered closely with mountains, with the few villages set some distance apart from each other. The lower stretches are significantly more populated with the mountains acting as a blue-purple backdrop.

India - The Ganges

www.activetravel.com.au

The Upper Ganges For more than 350 million people, the sacred Ganges is their lifeline. It feeds, cleans and transports them, as well as lying at the heart of their religious beliefs. This mighty 2,510 km river rises in the western Himalaya and drains into the Sunderbans delta in the Bay of Bengal. It has over a hundred names, but Hindus refer to it as the Mother Ganga. The Upper Ganges begins at the Farrakka Barrage, with a number of historical sights, different village cultures, and the ever present Gangetic Dolphin as you cruise from West Bengal, into Bihar and then on to Uttar Pradesh. Each day brings new highlights as you stop to visit smaller towns and villages, seeing relics of the British Raj and witnessing the gentle Ganga in its majestic diversity. You visit Bodhgaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment, and our 13-day trip also includes the sacred city of Varanasi.

The Lower Ganges (also known as the Hooghly River) was once an important transportation channel in the early history of Bengal, providing access to the rich jute trade for various European powers that established a string of colonies on its shores. The riverbanks hosted several battles and skirmishes towards the start of the colonial era and in 1757, on behalf of the British East India Company, Clive of India defeated the Moghul Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey. This was a decisive moment in the history of the region and Calcutta rose up to become the jewel in the British India crown. Today, much of this heritage can be seen and experienced on this exciting seven-day voyage as you pass abandoned jute factories and warehouses and visit a string of colonial enclaves including the old Dutch/ French colony at Chandernagar, later eclipsed by Calcutta in the colonial wars of the 18th century. Visit ancient temples, wander down the corridors of Maharajah’s palaces and explore artisan villages along the way.

India - The Brahmaputra The Brahmaputra The Brahmaputra is a massive river originating in the Himalaya, flowing east through China before looping through Assam and down into Bangladesh. After tumbling out of the mountains the river slows and spreads over the immense Brahmaputra Valley that bisects the rich green plains of Assam. Turning south, it converges with the Ganges and spills into the Bay of Bengal, creating one of the largest mangrove forests in the world. Within Assam, World Heritage National Parks are accessible as day excursions from our boat, as are villages, weaving communities, temples and river towns. Here, the Brahmaputra is a giant of a river, serene yet complex. For us it provides excellent interaction with local villagers, who excel at weaving and crafts and whose way of life seems unaltered from their ancestors. Superb wildlife reserves display prolific birdlife as well as large mammals - rhino, elephants, deer and perhaps tiger. Then there are the small towns, bustling markets, ancient temples and centuries of history. The river passes through a land populated by many language groups with strong cultural integrity and wonderful scenery – from broad sand islands to the snow capped peaks of the Himalaya.

Which cruise to take? The Brahmaputra is a river steeped in mythology and our magical voyages offer the chance to experience it in all its guises. • 11D or 15D Complete Brahmaputra is the ultimate 450km voyage through the heart of Assam, from Guwahati to Dibrugarh or vv. • 8D Lower Brahmaputra from Guwahati to Kaziranga National Park, or 8D Upper Brahmaputra from Kaziranga to Dibrugarh both offer a wonderful taste of the region. • 8D Wild Nature of Assam focuses more on the wildlife and birdlife, including a three-night Brahmaputra cruise. Our experience indicates one cruise is as good as the other. There are variations of course, such as scenery, character of towns and villages, but none have a disadvantage, leaving the date and your time constraints as the ultimate decider.

Our Riverboat Selection MV Jayavarman

RV Toum Tiou

Launched in August 2009, this 58-metre deluxe riverboat offers a fusion of traditional eastern shipbuilding and avant-garde French colonial design, along with state of the art technology. She boasts some of the most spacious cabins on the Mekong and each has a private balcony.

The charming 10-cabin Toum Tiou (and sister vessel Toum Tiou II) are operated by a French-Cambodian company. She was the first boat constructed in Cambodia to offer international standard cabin accommodation and onboard facilities.

Accommodation includes two Royal junior suites (26m2), 11 deluxe cabins (24m2) and 14 superior cabins (21m2), each of which is individually themed with ensuite bathroom. The ship’s spacious facilities, spread out over five decks, include a day spa, an elegant restaurant serving eastern and western cuisine, two expansive lounges, a shop and a library. Local timbers were used in the construction and wood panelling features throughout the vessel, while the shallow draft hull is of steel construction. She is one of the smallest vessels to cruise the Lower Mekong and her small size (just 10 guest cabins) and shallow draft allow us to go to sections of the river the larger cruise boats cannot visit - an important detail appreciated by guests. MV Mekong Sun

For years the Mekong that bisects Thailand and Laos was largely inaccessible due to its shallow waters, tight gorges and treacherous sandbanks. Today it can only be explored in small vessels with a shallow draft. The RV Mekong Sun was built in 2006 and offers an intimate encounter with the river. There are two decks, with a total of 14 cabins, comprising eleven standard cabins and three superior cabins. On the RV Mekong Sun there are no Captain’s dinners and no bingo nights – instead the focus is on the local culture and environment. The 16 crew members offer attentive and friendly service and the restaurant provides a mix of Asian and continental cuisine. Length Beam Cabins Cabin sizes Style

MV Mekong Islands

The elegant 24-cabin Indochine offers cosy sophistication on its regular programme from Saigon to Siem Reap. Built from steel and beautifully finished in local teakwood, her design maximises views of the river, with outside cabins and wraparound walkways.

Built in 2008, Toum Tiou II is the larger sister vessel of Toum Tiou. She is finished with timber and brass and offers comfortable ensuite cabin accommodation and tasteful décor.

A cruise on the RV Mekong Islands is the most comfortable and exclusive way to explore this unique section of the Mekong River, including the so-called ‘4000 islands’ where thousands of small islets appear after the annual monsoon rains start to subside. A shallow draft is essential on this part of the river, and the RV Mekong Islands has been specifically built for this purpose.

There are 24 cabins (including two suites) each with ensuite facilities. The dining-room is located on the upper deck, offering a mix of Asian and Western cuisine and on the sundeck there’s an extensive lounge and bar allowing wonderful views of the river. The rest of the sundeck is equipped with deck chairs where you can relax and watch life unfolding along the riverbanks. Length Beam Cabins Cabin sizes Style
