ON THE COVER
Waiting for a wave in New Zealand
A young Aussie vet working in England stumbled upon a paddock of retired Double Decker buses. With just £400, a few bunk beds and a flash of inspiration, Topdeck was born! In 1976, on the other side of the world, another young Aussie had just returned from his travels, and co-founded a company that was to become a pioneer in youth touring in Australia and New Zealand Connections Adventures! Although these two Aussies might not be quite so young anymore, their passion for the youth travel industry still remains - fast forward 30 something years and these two groundbreaking travel companies have joined forces to launch the ‘new’ Topdeck Australia and New Zealand! Using the combined experience and expertise that comes from operating outstanding tours in two incredible and contrasting continents, we have put together our most comprehensive range of holidays yet in Australia and New Zealand, and we’d love for you to come and join Topdeck ‘Down Under’!
We think it’s important that you know what makes us tick before you make a decision to travel with us. At Topdeck we have one overriding passion - to give 18 to 30 somethings the travel experience of a lifetime! We refer to our travel experiences as trips, not tours - this is not just a play on words, but an essential part of our culture. When you book a trip with us, we always remember
it’s your holiday - sure, we’ll show you Australia and New Zealand in comfort and without the hassles, but we go out of our way to ensure that you never feel ‘managed’. Don’t forget though, our superbly trained Topdeck Road Crew are there for you 24/7 should you need them. What’s more, they’re all native Australians or New Zealanders who are passionate about sharing their homelands with travellers from all over the world!
Topdeck’s owners are all Antipodeans as well, and we know better than anyone what an amazing part of the world it is. Whether you choose one of our awesome Aussie trips or want to explore incredible New Zealand, we can’t wait to show you – Topdeck style! Some roads are not meant to be travelled alone. Come join us in 2011!
3
Experience, Value, Quality Three words that set our trips apart. No other adventure operator has more experience ‘Down Under’, no other adventure operator can compete with our value for money, and we have been market leaders in terms of quality for decades.
Time is Precious We know our passengers are all individuals, and that every traveller has different holiday expectations. We try to give you as much free time as possible to enjoy each destination – so you can be as individual as you like!
Friendly, Passionate No Worries! Road Crew Travelling with Topdeck is a hassle The travel bug is tough to kick and at Topdeck we know this better than anyone! Our friendly, helpful Road Crew are all local Australians or New Zealanders who love their work and are passionate about sharing their homeland with others. They are expertly trained and full of knowledge about the amazing destinations we visit, and they’ll help you make the most of every day of your trip!

free experience. We do all the work, so you can get on with the important business of enjoying yourself! We’ll show you all the sights you expect to see, and many more that you didn’t. No worries!
Our Vehicles
Fellow Travellers
We have a wide range of vehicles specifically designed for local terrain. As we don’t operate large group tours we utilise both minibuses (average 22 seats) or midi coaches (average 34 seats). All our vehicles are modern, comfortable, air-conditioned… and equipped with great sound systems!
Most adventure travel companies have no age guidelines, so you never know if your group will include children or pensioners… or both! All our passengers are aged between 18 and 39, and we’re confident that having a group of young, like-minded travelling companions will be one of the highlights of your journey. Whether it’s watching the legendary sunset at Uluru in Australia, or seeing dawn break on our exclusive Milford Sound Cruise in New Zealand, we believe it’s better to share the experience with mates. Travelling alone? No problem, a large portion of our passengers do and it’s a great way to meet new people – not to mention, you still get the same great low prices!
Special Experiences On all our trips you’ll have the opportunity to participate in some truly special experiences, some of which are unique to Topdeck. In New Zealand, our stay on a traditional Maori Marae is both moving and memorable, while our luxury cruise on the pristine waters of the Milford Sound is jaw-droppingly beautiful, and both are exclusive to Topdeck clients. In Australia, one of our longstanding favourites is our ‘Live Aboard’ sailing cruise amongst the gorgeous Whitsunday Islands. And new to our Australian program this year is a night in the Outback at Manyallaluk, home to 150 Aboriginal people working hard to maintain an independent and sustainable lifestyle. Regardless of what Topdeck trip you choose, many unforgettable experiences await!
5
On your Topdeck trip you’ll stay in accommodation as varied as the places we visit - we don’t limit ourselves to just traditional hotels and campgrounds! Sure, you’ll stay in style at the odd resort near the beach, but we’ll also broaden your horizons in the shelter department. Stay overnight in New Zealand on a traditional Maori Marae, or experience our unique overnight cruise on the spectacular Milford Sound. Back in Oz, soar above the glittering Gold Coast in a luxury high-rise, or sleep aboard a former racing yacht in the beautiful waterways of the Whitsundays. Throw in some of the most comfortable and modern hostels to be found anywhere in the world, and you’ll have a fantastic selection of accommodations in which to rest your weary head!

The Ngati Hinerangi people, a Subtribe (Hapu) of Rotorua’s Te Arawa tribe have generously opened the doors of their Marae to Topdeck and its’ guests. This is a very rare opportunity for visitors to Aotearoa and also the people of Ngati Hinerangi. Hosted by the crew from Mult-Day Adventures, visitors are welcomed in the traditional manner and spend an evening taking in the local culture and the beauty of the area. They are also given the chance to get all their questions answered in a relaxed and informal way inside the Whare Tipuna (Ancestral house) of the Marae.
The relationship has been mutually beneficial to all three parties involved. Multi-day Adventures is able to fulfill on its heartfelt commitment to support its local community, and extend a great opportunity for their guides to grow their knowledge of Maori culture, sharing this with interested Topdeck guests. Taheke Marae has been able to build their new Whare Manaaki (Hosting house) using funding the Whanau has previously raised, along with the kohas (donations) supplied to them for their generosity in sharing their
marae, thus realizing their goal much sooner than anticipated. Finally, Topdeck visitors are offered a genuine experience, off the beaten track, providing a unique encounter not found in any brochured products. A Marae is kept alive and thriving by housing people, who are its heartbeat and life blood. Many a visitor to Taheke can now say they have left a special part of themselves there as well as taken away something special in return. On behalf of Multi-Day Adventures, and Ngati Hinerangi, we thank Topdeck for helping us share our culture with the World. It is through the understanding of others that we may keep it alive for future generations.

Explore the sub-tropical aquatic playground that is the Bay of Islands. Stroll along the unspoilt beaches and amongst the lush forests that make up the stunning Coromandel Peninsula. Sleep in a Maori Marae on the outskirts of Rotorua, where geysers and steaming mud-pools abound. Hike in Tongariro National Park, a beautiful landscape dominated by the active volcano, Mt Ruapehu.
42
Spot the mighty sperm whale and the graceful dusky dolphin at Kaikoura. Enjoy the scenic splendour of New Zealand’s most famous fiord, Milford Sound, on Topdeck’s exclusive luxury cruise. Check out the incredible scenery of adventure sports haven, Queenstown, and partake in a range of adrenalin-fuelled activities. Hike on one of New Zealand’s amazing glaciers... and perhaps get a helicopter to take you there!
19 Day Grand Kiwi This map features the 19 Day Grand Kiwi. With 8 fantastic New Zealand itineraries to choose from, whether you want mountains, glaciers or a pure adrenalin rush, Topdeck has a trip for you.
Hi, I’m Scott, a Topdeck driver and I hail from small town New Zealand. I’m from the North Island and am a country boy, born and bred. Before driving for Topdeck, I was an adventure caving guide in Waitomo, New Zealand, and a self-styled adrenalin junkie with more the 140 bungy jumps to my name, done all over the world (including one in a white water kayak). I love it when people do there first jump, their reactions are awesome! My tip for New Zealand is that you must try drinking from a teapot in Queenstown followed by a late night ‘Ferg Burger’ (it’s heaven in your mouth). For those of you with an adventurous soul, a plunge off the boat into the waters of Milford Sound is an experience not to be missed.
43
Explore the Coromandel Peninsula A collection of unspoilt beaches and lush forests form a paradise for us to explore. It’s easy to see why the locals love it!
44
Queenstown, an Adventure Playground Combine a buzzing town with enough adventure pursuits to satisfy the most extreme thrillseekers, with one of the most naturally beautiful locations anywhere in the world, and you get Queenstown – it’s easy to see why this place is such a Topdeck favourite!
Stay on a Maori Marae, Rotorua
Tongariro National Park
Whale Spotting Kaikoura
A Topdeck exclusive and a long time cultural favourite amongst Topdeck clients. Our stay on a traditional Maori Marae gives us a rare insight into the history and culture of the Maori people as we stay as their honoured guests.
A hike in Tongariro National Park is a highlight of any trip. The awe-inspiring views of volcanic mountains are made even more exciting by the fact that some of them, such as Mt. Ruapehu, are still very active!
Take an optional cruise to spot the mighty sperm whales of Kaikoura, or maybe you’ll prefer to swim with the local dolphins! Both are equally unforgettable.
Overnight Cruise on Milford Sound
Bay of Islands “Rock the Boat” Cruise
Fox Glacier
Enjoy our exclusive luxury cruise on Milford Sound, a truly beautiful fiord where waterfalls cascade from imposing cliffs to the pristine waters below.
The optional “Rock the Boat” overnight cruise is the perfect way to view the Bay of Islands’ amazing scenery and wildlife. The Rock’s spacious downstairs living area includes a bar, lounge, pool table, and even an open fire.
It’s not every day that you can stay at the foot of a moving river of ice, but that’s exactly what our stay in magical Fox Glacier involves! An optional hike or “Heli-hike” on the glacier with a local guide is a memorable experience.
