Arwen Hann Arwen Hann embarked on her first overseas adventure at 18, with a solo trip to New Zealand and Singapore. She has travelled extensively across the world. After emigrating from England to New Zealand and starting a family, her focus switched from far-flung adventures to road trips. She has braved long-haul travel with a young child, and called South Africa home temporarily. She dreams of beach holidays that don’t involve building sand castles, and enjoys seeing new experiences through the eyes of a schoolchild. Anna Vichnevetskaia The first job Anna’s mum ever had was on a cruise ship and she would sometimes take Anna along. And that was probably how Anna got her travel bug. Today, 20 years later, Anna has been to 35 countries across 5 continents. Travel has not only opened her eyes and mind to new places and cultures, but also made her realize how lucky and privileged she is. That’s why she works with international social development, combining work, travel, giving back and learning. Jonas Ask Homaa Jonas has always had an inherent urge for travelling and exploring. Having lived with his family in Copenhagen, Los Angeles and now Melbourne he always looks for new adventures both locally and out in the big world. His favorite thing is to dive or go camping with his daughter and you can always catch him eating italian ice cream on a hot summer day.

My best childhood memories involve digging trenches around sand castles, snorkeling in shallow water, playing in rock pools and licking melted ice cream off my fingers in the hot sun. We used to pack for the whole day and jump on our bikes with big smiles on our faces. As a kid I loved the prospect of spending uninterrupted time playing with my mum and dad in the sun and as a teenager it was the thought of spending time with my friends without too much interference from the adults. The beach has all the ingredients for a great family holiday and with the right mix of sand and sun you can get family memories for a lifetime. But since we have it at the very top on our Big City Beaches list, we have found another great Sydney beach perfect for a family day out. Bronte Beach is small but popular with families. How to ...

Be prepared ...

Even if you go to your local beach there are a few things that you can do to be more safe even before you hit the sand. First of all it is always a great idea to check the weather and the wind and waves. You can of course use any source available ask the locals, check the weather forecast in the papers or online. You can also have a look at www.beachsafe.org.au. Here you can find weather conditions and swell information for your local beach. But you can also find information about every single beach in Australia and whether they are patrolled or not, what kind of facilities there are and even check out the general beach hazard rating.

Have the right gear ...

This is probably true for many life situations. But when it comes to the beach is does make a difference if you have packed the right stuff. Make sure to pack necessities like sun block, sun hat, long sleeved rashie, beach tent etc. Make

sure to have enough drinking water as the sun and salty seas can dehydrate you quickly. Make sure to pack some extra clothes for the kids to jump in if the wind picks up. And pack some things to nibble on as running up and down on the beach can wear little feet out - dry things like biscuits or fruit can be stored easily. You probably know best what your kids need on a sunny day on the beach, but if you pack for those little emergencies you can avoid having to pack up and leaving your favorite sand castle early. Also if you have swim gear, surfing gear etc. make sure that it is in good shape and you have what you need. Wrong or faulty gear can cause dangerous situations. Like not having your leash when surfing and losing your surfboard or body boarding without fins and getting caught in a rip current. Make sure you have a mobile phone in case you need to call for help (on an unpatrolled beach).

BEACH SAFETY

Teach you kids ...

Talk to you kids about beach safety. Most of the dangerous things on the beach can be hard to figure out by yourself when you are young. Rip currents, underwater rocks and holes can be difficult to comprehend so the more you talk about what the dangers are, how to avoid them and what to do in case something happens the better. You can always read more on BeachSafe’s website, book a Surf Ed course or of course enroll your kids in your local Nippers program.

Be alert and follow safety rules!

There are a few simple rules to follow when you are on the beach. If you are on a new beach be sure to read the safety signs. This will let you know if there are any warnings or dangers on the beach. Ask for advice. Lifeguards are highly trained and very knowledgeable about beach safety and conditions. Feel free to ask them about the day’s conditions, as well any additional beach safety advice they might have for that specific beach – because every beach is different. Make sure to know where the kids are. Make rules for the kids on where they can go (how far away, how deep in the

water etc.) and make sure they tell you where they are going. Always swim between the red and yellow flags. Lifeguards pay more attention to this area than any other parts of the beach and they have chosen this section to be best for swimming. Never swim alone. Not only is swimming with someone more fun, it is also more sensible. Make sure that you go out with the kids or if they are old enough that they go out together. When swimming together you can keep an eye out for each other, and if needed call for help. If you need help, stay calm and attract attention. Even the most careful swimmers can find themselves out of their limits in the water. If you need help getting back to shore, stay calm, raise your arm in the air and wave it from side to side. This will attract the attention of a lifeguard who will be able to come to your assistance. You should conserve your energy by floating on your back and staying calm. Family Beach Paradise

For families, the island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa is a great choice. It is safe, free from major diseases, and has a host of familyfriendly hotels that will make everyone’s holiday unforgettable. Both the French and the English ruled Mauritius before it gained its independence and the French influence is still very noticeable. French is widely spoken around the island and at most hotels, but don’t worry if languages

weren’t your strong point at school as most people also speak English. There are plenty of activities and things to see inland, but most visitors head, as we did, straight to the beach.

We stayed at Le Victoria, a four-star hotel in the north of the island, which is rated as one of the most family friendly in Mauritius, but there are plenty of hotels across the island that pride themselves on being great for family

vacations. At the resorts, you can be as relaxed or as active as you like. Most rooms are just a short stroll from the beach so all you need to do is wander over to the sand and stake your claim on a sun-lounger then you can sunbathe, paddle in the sea or get a drink bought straight to your chair by the attentive staff.

If you do feel like being a little more active, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can take in the view from the air by parasailing behind a speedboat, career through the waves on a giant inflatable or test your water-skiing skills. We saw brightly coloured fish in the shallows with a snorkel and mask, but if you want to see the sea-life further out a glass bottom boat tour gives you the

chance. When we occasionally fancied a break from the beach, we moved to the hotel pool with a large shallow end great for younger children to splash around. Staff organise aqua gym sessions and pool volleyball if you fancy some exercise or you can just sit back and enjoy the view.

Relax and unwind

The island routine is most definitely relaxed. Most resorts offer buffet breakfasts and lunches available over several hours for those who like to take their time. Dinners are buffet style or can be eaten in one of the resorts restaurants like Le Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beachside seafood restaurant where we spent our last night listening to the gentle lap of the waves as we ate. Dinner service doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually start until 7pm, which is later

than we normally eat as a family, but the bonus was that it gave us plenty of time to watch the stunning sunsets. In some ways, I felt slightly bad for not exploring the island more, but with the sea and sand so inviting, there was nothing better than simply lazing the holiday away. Mauritius is one destination where the reality really is as good as it looks in the brochure and I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to go back.

Compare prices and think about how much you might eat and drink at the resort to decide if it is worth paying for an all-inclusive package or whether half board or bed and breakfast would suit you better. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t choose the all-inclusive package keep a close eye on how many extras you have. It can be easy to charge things to your room only to face a huge bill at the end of your holiday. Look for resorts that are advertised as family friendly as they will have more suitable facilities. Mauritius is a popular honeymoon destination and some resorts are aimed at adults only. Mauritius is very popular with South Africans and resorts get busy during South African school holidays so avoid these If possible. Many of the beaches are lined with coral washed up on shore, and have rocks and coral reefs in the shallow water. It is a good idea to take some plastic shoes to wearing while paddling. Be prepared to abandon your usual routine â&#x20AC;&#x201C; long lunches, late dinners and fun on the beach will probably equal late night and afternoon naps for the whole family. While the sand on this beach is standard, the Light Beach in the Maldives holds a beautiful surprise in its water. Microscopic phytoplankton in the water give off light when they are shaken by the waves creating a twinkling effect at night that looks almost like stars reflected in the water.

In sunny New South Wales, just a few hoursâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; drive from Sydney, there is a beach that holds a world record. Hyams Beach reportedly has the whitest sand in the world and has a Guinness Book of Records entry to prove it.

Glass Beach California

Once a place near Fort Bragg where locals dumped their rubbish, the Glass Beach is a testament to the power of nature. The trash was crushed by the sea and smoothed by the surf into glass pellets. While rub rubbish dumping has since been banned, the glass remains.

e might not think of beaches when it comes to Canada, but Vancouver’s Kitsilano or “Kits” beach is quite popular with locals and tourists alike, especially during the hot summer months. Located only 10 minutes from downtown Vancouver, it features the longest swimming pool in Canada (outdoor saltwater), a playground and beach volley, tennis and basketball courts and a lifeguard from May to September.

But there is much more to do in Vancouver: close to Kits, you will find Vanier Park, where you can fly kites, check out the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre, or take in the Beach Shakespeare Festival. Or take a ferry to Granville Island to find a market especially designed for kids, then spend the day at the water park. And if that’s not enough, take a horse-drawn tour at Stanley Park in the heart of the city or visit the Vancouver Aquarium.

You can also take an excursion to Medena Valley, ride ponies and visit a small domestic animals zoo. ith around 40 beaches there is plenty to choose from in Nice. Hi-Beach is known to be one of the most family-friendly ones, with padded family play mats available for rent. Yes, all of the beaches in Nice have pebbles instead of sand, which means your kids can make pebble structures and skim stones on the water. It is, however, recommended to bring water shoes. There is no lack of activities around Nice, either. Starting with the famous Promenade des Anglais itself, where you can rent roller blades, bikes or skateboards. You will also find Espace Marineland and Antibes Land amusement parks close-by, Under the Sea adventures with Visiobulle, a glass-bottom boat, as well as Le Pitchoun and Canyon Forests, for activities such as tree-trekking, climbing and ziplining.

Right in the city, this is a great beach to go to with kids. You can rent bikes, play a variety of sports and have the security of a lifeguard. For the little ones, check out North Miami Beach for calmer and shallower waters.

What else is there to do in Miami? You can go to the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, Miami Children’s Museum, or Miami Seaquarium. You might also want to spend some time on the Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, especially if you have teenagers, or browse the shops at Bayside Marketplace; here you can also grab a family boat tour around the harbour.

his row of four (sometimes 5, depending on the season) adjacent beaches are a 10 minute drive from Cape Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s downtown. The most popular one for families is Beach 4, since it has the calmest waters and a generally familyfriendly atmosphere. There are many options for sand and water sports here and a natural beauty to reckon with. The only downside is that water is normally very cold.

But donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be discourage from a vacation in Cape Town by cold waters. There is literally everything you can imagine, when it comes to things you can do with the kids in the city. Aquarium, Science Center, historical museums, fun parks and islands, amusement park, adventure activities, Cape Town has it all. And if you want a couple of nights to yourself, there are even specialized kids camps for 2, 3 or 7 nights!

Barceloneta Beach Barcelona, Spain

asily accessible from nearby hotels or a short metro ride, Barceloneta is a large and very popular sand beach, possibly the most well-known one in Barcelona. The water here warms up quite early in June and it is a great way to spend the day. It is lined with restaurants and cafes, where you can try some Spanish tortilla (an egg and potato omelet), which even the pickiest of kids will enjoy.

Barcelona has a special place in my heart, after living there for a year. This marvelous city has an unlimited number of activities to offer. One of the bestknown attractions here is Gaudiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Parc Guell, and the whole family will love itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enchanted, Alice In Wonderland feel. You can also visit the local aquarium and zoo, or take a stroll through Poble Espanyol, a town-museum that features the different types of Spanish architecture.

A day at Bondi Beach will probably not be enough to get through all of the activities this white sand, azure water sanctuary offers the kids. Here, you can rent bikes or roller blades and explore the boardwalk, or pick up a skateboard and go to the skate park. For the smaller kids there is a playground and Iceberg swimming pools, for the safest of waters. Your children will also enjoy the Marine Discovery Center, which has live fish and audio-visuals to teach kids about marine life.

If thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not enough entertainment, Sydney itself leaves a lot of room for family exploration. Spend a day at the SEA LIFE Sydney aquarium, visit the Sydney observatory for a look in to space, or go up to the Sydney Tower Eye for a view from the observation deck. There is also a number of museums, such as Madame Tussauds (wax sculptures), National Maritime Museum, the Taronga Zoo and the Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary.
