letter from the editor Dearest Readers, Travel is alive and well! We all snuck into 2021 on high alert, like a parent trying to quietly creep into the room to check on their sleeping child without waking them. There have been so many travel improvements and adaptations, such as lifting travel bans or affording people the option to travel virtually. Though smiling faces are hard to see behind a mask, you can rest assured that every town in this beautiful spring issue is ready and awaiting your arrival with a grin. I am in the midst of planning my return trip to Puerto Rico, along with a natural springs vacation. I love smelling the air of new places. I love trying the different foods and finding the local hidden gems that not every visitor gets to experience. We’ve strived to bring you exactly that within this issue. You’ll discover quaint towns, wide open spaces, local appeal, history, and so much more. Seek new places virtually, seek them by car or by plane, seek them in whatever way makes you comfortable – but don’t ever stop exploring. A good friend once told me, “travel everywhere and travel often.” I say the same to you now. Get out there. Adventure is calling!
Happy Travels,
Abby Therrien

l e v atr Q&A
E VE RYT H I N G YO U N E E D TO K N OW TO T R AV E L S A F E T H I S S E A S O N Q: Where can I travel now?
A: You can travel anywhere! Just be sure to look up any restrictions or requirements. Some places outside of the United States may require a negative COVID test upon entry into their area, but other than that, there are no regulations. Just be sure to sanitize often and wear a mask! Q: Are Spring Break events happening like usual? A: Yes and no. It really depends on where you’re planning to visit. Some states are still practicing social distancing vigorously, and because of that, certain events for the season have been canceled or postponed. However, theme parks, beaches, and even some festivals are still in full swing, so just be sure to do your research for the most accurate information. There are plenty of concerts and music festivals that have been confirmed across the country, from Chicago to California. The Hangout Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama is a good one for big names in music. There are also food festivals, such as the Strawberry Festival in Plant City, Florida, and themed events like state Renaissance Fairs that have all been confirmed for the 2021 season.

Q: How do I stay safe while traveling by car?
Q: Are airlines and car rentals available and safe?
A: Road trips are huge this year, because of the personal space it affords each individual family, along with drivethrough destinations that practice social distancing naturally. Traveling by car is a safe way to keep your family all in one spot. Just be sure to wash your hands thoroughly when getting in and out of the car at rest stops, restaurants, hotels, or gas stations. Make sure your vehicle has a full-service check before heading out, especially if you are taking a longer road trip. Road trips are not only safe, they’re fun! The nostalgia of piling in the car as kids and galivanting off to a destination for Spring Break is one of our fondest memories. Now is certainly a great time to remake those precious moments with our loved ones today. .
A: They are available, and they are as safe as can be! Airlines and rental companies are making sure that each flight/vehicle is sanitized before new passengers arrive. When booking a flight or a rental car, or both, it is always a good idea to carry sanitizing wipes with you so that you can wipe down surfaces as needed. Rental companies will even offer a fullservice wash before you get into the vehicle, along with safety and sanitization tips. Airlines are more than happy to accommodate travelers, and their mask policy is very firm, so you can rest assured that your flight will be exceptional. Q: Are children still getting a Spring Break vacation even if they’re in virtual school? A: The answer in short is yes. Even though some kids are not back in the classrooms, they are still afforded their normal breaks from class. If your child, or children in your family, are still taking virtual classes, this would be a great time to get them out of the house – it is no surprise that kids are bored at home and ready to be back in school. Some states have allowed children to fully return to school with safety protocol in mind, and Spring Break vacations will still be happening for them as well. .
Q: Do I need to wear a mask still? A: Yes. Masks are required to enter most places of business. All transportation services, such as airlines, trains, and taxis, still require the use of a mask. It is definitely better to be safe than sorry in this case. Many companies have come out with fashionable, functional masks that aren’t uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. And if you forget a mask, most places do have medical-grade masks to hand out.

Where the Forest and Foodies Unite During the Spring Awakening
Freshly Foraged Foods and Nature Exploration Are Getting Their Day in the Sun
A
perfect way to re-awaken your tastebuds and
energy levels
spring road trip to Northeast Pennsylvania is the perfect way to re-awaken your tastebuds and energy levels as nature begins to thaw after a long winter’s rest. When cabin fever might feel like it is at its peak, planning a road trip is the perfect prescription to help welcome in the new season. The Lodge at Woodloch is located just a few hours from most metropolitan cities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. The allinclusive destination spa resort holds awards as a top spa in the world for good reason. The jam-packed activity schedule includes everything from creative arts, cooking demonstrations and wine tastings, fitness/MindBody classes, outdoor adventures, and of course spa treatments galore. The Lodge at Woodloch has long been at the forefront of showcasing artfully crafted meals that have a healthy twist. The award-winning destination spa has embraced the desire for guests to truly know where their food comes from and how it is prepared. Guests can tour the on-property Blackmore Farm-to-Table garden where the Chef and garden team grow herbs and vegetables for the restaurant and spa. The orchard, bee hives, and healing garden are also huge draws. But much to the team’s surprise, the forest that surrounds the beautiful property is where the real harvest can be found. As more and more people understand the importance of their personal connection with nature, The Lodge at Woodloch has evolved to meet the demand. Recently, with Naturalist Joshua Heath at the helm, the Outdoor Adventure department reorganized and expanded to become the Outdoor Experiences department, in order to house a new section dedicated to mindfulness in nature. Hiking, biking, kayaking, and fly-fishing will remain options through Outdoor Adventure. The Mindfulness in Nature section includes classes such as forest therapy walks, sunrise photo walks and tea classes, in addition to existing offerings such as Forest Bathing, birdhouse decorating, terrarium classes and more. One of Josh’s favorite pieces of advice for being mindful in nature is getting guests to slow down. “I like to set an uncomfortably slow pace,” explains Heath. “People are so used to rushing from point A to point B that they don’t have the capability of truly slowing down. I like to remind guests of the famous quote by Lao Tzu, “Nature doesn’t hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”
Back in 2000, Australian sustainability professor Glenn Albrecht coined a term psychoterratica- the trauma caused by distance from nature. There has been study after study and book after book written outlining the powerful effects of not having a steady dose of nature, such as “Nature Fix” by Florence Williams, “The Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv, and “Your Brain on Nature” by Eva Selhub. With a hefty goal of helping guests to fully understand and embrace the importance of nature in their lives (for their mind, body, and soul), the true sign of success would be that guests continue their nature practice long after they leave the guiding hands at The Lodge at Woodloch.
The true star of The Lodge at Woodloch’s location, which is tucked among 500+ wooded acres, is always the forest that surrounds the iconic property. The forest and foodies unite in amazing ways through exclusive classes such as the Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk, Seasonal Foraging, and fermented food classes. One of the most popular seasonal offerings is the Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk that ends with a gourmet tasting of what can be found on their nature trails. Herbalist, Heather Houskeeper, ends her classes with a tasting of such delights such as Stinging Nettle Pesto on Cucumbers, Fiddlehead and Chanterelle Risotto, and Potato Ramp Soup. This class is often a huge awakening for guests because they realize that plants that they once considered to be weeds at home can be packed with nutrients and prepared to impress guests! Guests truly love combining the amazing nature experiences and foodie exploration options through: Chef Curated Garden Dinners: Executive Chef Josh Tomson is switching up the typical Farmto-Table dinner by bringing the Table to the Farm! The garden patio has been expanded and food preparation area enhanced. The intimate Chef-led tasting dinners will occur a few times per week and will take place right on the deck in the center of Blackmore garden. The two-hour tasting will be led by Chef Josh (or one of his talented Chefs) as he selects and prepares the harvest focus for the dinner. All dinners are paired with a wine selected by Sommelier, Leslie Britt. There is a slight up-charge for the intimate dinner experience of $75 per person which includes the wine pairing. The reservations-only dinners will take place as the weather and season allows.

Off road Adventures The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is the largest inland peninsula in the United States with more than 300 miles of scenic shoreline. Its 170,000 acres stretches across parts of both Kentucky and Tennessee, and gives visitors an opportunity to explore nature and learn about area wildlife and the environment.
From living out your dream of becoming a National Geographic photographerfor-hire, snapping prize shots (from the safety of your vehicle) of the Elk & Bison, to hiking and mountain biking around lakes, there are yet two more adventurous activities that draw many enthusasts: off-roading and horseback riding.
And when spring pushes the winter cold out of the region, LBL’s 500 miles of trails becomes a hub for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, while its scenic waterways provide the ideal waterplaygrounds, great for boating, water sports and fishing.
Off-Roading at Turkey Bay OffHighway Vehicle Area Race through forests, over hills, through creeks and along the shoreline of Lake Barkley, with its waters twinkling just beyond sandy trail edges. Take it easy on smooth,
maintained trails or put your skills to the test on more challenging backcountry trails—climbing steep hills and navigating sharp turns. f you’re searching for the real American West, look no further than Cody, Wyoming. This city was founded in 1896 by the most authentic representative of the Old West, Colonel William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody.
I
Buffalo Bill lived up to the romantic idea of the brave, daring frontiersman. It is his name that represents the true epitome of the Old West and has provided a draw to this small western town, where real cowboys still herd cattle and the buffalo still roam.
The city of Cody lies about 20 miles east of the Shoshone National Forest, our first national forest, and 52 miles east of the eastern entrance to the nation’s first national park, Yellowstone. It’s hard to tell where Cody ends and Yellowstone begins. That’s because the journey to Yellowstone is all part of the Cody experience. Whichever way you travel to Cody into Yellowstone, it will be an adventure to remember. Your CodyYellowstone experience is not complete without exploring the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. The Center is widely regarded as America’s finest western museum. Its 300,000 square feet of exhibition space certainly make it one of America’s largest, featuring five separate museums under one roof. The Whitney Art Museum presents an outstanding collection of masterworks of the American West, including original paintings, sculptures and prints of the West from the early 19th century to present day. The Cody Firearms Museum houses the world’s largest and most important assemblage of American arms, as well as European arms dating back to the 16th century.
T H E
The Plains Indian Museum ranks as one of the nation’s finest interpretations of the American Indian civilization. The Buffalo Bill Museum contains a wealth of material relating to the life of Buffalo Bill Cody, celebrating his varied career as Pony Express rider, frontiersman, scout, buffalo hunter, rancher, creator and star of the first Wild West Show. The fifth museum, the Draper Natural History Museum is a dynamic stateof-the-art, user-friendly exploration of relationships between humans and nature in the Greater Yellowstone area.
CODY IS “THE RODEO CAPITAL OF THE WORLD” with its Cody Nite Rodeo which is the only rodeo in the country that runs every night June through August. Contestants from across the country come to compete. It is true family entertainment at its best.
G R E A T
Old Trail Town was created with authentic frontier buildings that were mostly collected from the Cody area. Some of these historically documented buildings include the cabin used by Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and their Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, and Curley’s Cabin, General Custer’s Crow Indian scout that survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Set against the beautiful backdrop of
West of Cody, The East Yellowstone Valley is home to spectacular landscapes and extraordinary wildlife. A sharp eye might spot elk, grizzly bear, bighorn sheep, moose, or deer feeding along the banks of the streams, on grassy benchlands, or amidst steep mountain cliffs. Outdoor enthusiasts will find a myriad of activities including horseback riding, hiking, biking, fishing, rock climbing, kayaking, river float trips, golf and camping. If you like outdoor adventure, you are sure to find it in CodyYellowstone!
A D V E N T U R E

From aweinspiring wonders like the Old Faithful geyser and Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone to the lofty peaks, emerald valleys and sparkling lakes of the Beartooth Mountains, the beauty and solitude of this area will take your breath away.

hake the winter blues and get moving this spring with a visit to Hendersonville, North Carolina. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Hendersonville is anchored by a charming downtown and surrounded by hundreds of acres of forest, trails and streams. Those wild spaces inspire visitors to try something new.
Cruise the treetops One of the best views in the Hendersonville area zooms by as you’re suspended from a zipline high above the Green River Gorge.
The Riveter opened in early 2020 as North Carolina’s first indoor climbing gym and bike park. Strap into a harness, chalk your hands and pick your path to the top along 16,000 square feet of climbing terrain. Climbers of every level will find something to challenge their abilities. A dedicated kids’ climbing cove has multiple rope stations and an awesome slide. The bike park is divided into two parts. Under the canopy, four separate lines provide terrain for all skill levels. Experienced riders practice jumps and drops, while younger riders hit the flowy pump track. Outdoors, four different lines vary in difficulty from green to double black. The Riveter also includes a yoga studio, fitness studio, meeting space, libation station and retail shop. Visitors may bring their own climbing and biking equipment or rent it on-site.
Race downhill Ride Kanuga is Hendersonville’s newest outdoor adventure attraction. Founded by world-champion downhill racer Neko Mulally, the mountain bike park features 12 downhill-specific trails suitable for all ability levels. The park’s goal is to make mountain biking accessible and fun for people of all ages and ability levels. Trails include a mix of natural features and jump lines and are specifically designed to help riders build new skills. Located at Kanuga Camps & Conference Center, the bike park is the latest outdoor offering for visitors to the retreat center, which is located on 1,400 acres with a lake and miles of hiking trails. Trailside cabins and campsites are available as ride-in/ride-out. Riders may also opt to stay in one of Kanuga’s historic guest cottages or the inn, a onemile ride from the bike trail entrance.
Grab an ax What do you get when you combine bowling and darts? The answer is ax throwing, and it’s a new, fun ways to relieve stress and unwind with friends or family. Hendersonville natives opened Timber Axe Throwing, a hip yet low-key spot, in Hendersonville in 2019. The sport of ax throwing requires no prior experience. Friendly, well-trained staff members provide demonstrations and teach proper technique. The goal is to hit the bull’s-eye at the other end of the throwing lane, but scoring is optional. The main idea is to enjoy your time. The facility includes a lounge area and outside deck with fire pit. Craft beer and cider from local producers complete the experience.
Getting here Hendersonville is only 20 minutes from Asheville Regional Airport. By car, Hendersonville is located just off Interstate 26 between Asheville, North Carolina, and Spartanburg, South Carolina. /////// To learn more and request a free visitor guide, go to www.VisitHendersonvilleNC.org or call (800) 828-4244.

OAK RIDGE
A THRIVING “SECRET CITY” The amazing technological advances resulting over the years touch every single person’s life directly and significantly. The exact same equipment, the exact same science, that created the atomic bomb also created nuclear medicine which helps millions every year! Oak Ridge is the home of these amazing discoveries that in addition to nuclear medicine led to nuclear power, a nuclear navy, radioisotopes for industrial and agricultural use, nuclear fuel for space exploration, and even the touch-screen technology on smartphones. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is home to the world’s fastest computer, “Summit”, which most recently was used to help find a cure for Coronavirus. Additionally, Oak Ridge, has become a small city with big city amenities ranging from a highly successful civic music association, a notable playhouse, a world renowned rowing venue, five excellent museums, and the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
The ever-thriving and always-amazing city of 30,000 multigenerational residents called Oak Ridge is located in the ridges and valleys of East Tennessee just 25 miles west of Knoxville. During WWII, Oak Ridge had 75,000 residents and was the fifth-largest city in the state of Tennessee – but wasn’t on any maps until 1949. Oak Ridge contributed to ending World War II through producing the uranium fuel for Little Boy, the world’s first atomic bomb ever used in warfare. Oak Ridge also helped win the Cold War through producing sufficient secondaries for all the nation’s thermonuclear weapons stockpile and causing the Soviet Union’s economic failure because they tried to match Y-12’s output one for one and couldn’t do so. In 1941, some 3,000 residents of 60,000 acres vacated their homes in a matter of days. A city was built along with the government facilities and the nuclear age was initiated with all its ramifications, right here in East Tennessee.
Tour buses can find a knowledgeable step-on tour guide, who can take them back in time and lead them on a historical tour of museums and historical sites. Oak Ridge’s outdoor activities have become so popular that they attract visitors from all across the southeast. Mountain bikers enjoy trails for experts down to beginners at Haw Ridge Park and the Windrock Bike Park. The glassy waters of Melton Hill Lake are perfect for fishing, boating, paddling and rowing, and allow you to enjoy the 30 miles of pristine shoreline Oak Ridge has to offer.
ENJOY KAYAKING IN OAK RIDGE

A bronze in his likeness graces the square, inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs. Anderson’s newest attraction is an art exhibit in homage to native son and international star Chadwick Boseman, who the world lost to colon cancer in 2020.

Watermelon RADISH Salad
>>EAT C A R R OT
S ALAD
Carrot salad is a southern picnic staple that is not only versatile, but simple and kid friendly. Combine grated carrots with raisins, mayo, lemon juice, and a pinch of sugar. Some versions call for cubed apples or crushed pineapple bits for extra sweetness. As a substitute for mayo, you can also try sour cream, Dijon mustard, and a bit of pepper for some kick. This gorgeous, vibrant salad will bring color to any meal, and is often a staple side during Easter celebrations.
ROASTED LE MON CHICKE N & PEAS This chicken dish is fresh, light, and filling! Roast your chicken with garlic slices, lemon slices, and your usual herb mixture, along with a sprig of rosemary. When done, serve with beautifully steamed peas on the side, and a light and fluffy mashed potato. It’s comfort food in spring – and it’s delicious!.
W AT E R M E LO N RADISH S ALAD Watermelon Radish Salad is one of the most flexible spring salads. Not only is it gorgeous in color, but it can be tossed in many ways. Try shaving the radishes and layering them over a bed of arugula with sliced avocado and a sprinkle of goat cheese. Another great assembly includes butter lettuce or romaine hearts with shaved watermelon radish, yellow tomatoes, and a raspberry vinaigrette. Add slices of strawberry or mandarin orange for some sweetness.

In season Asparagus is a favorite, especially when it is in season during spring
CUCUMBER MINT JULEP
A SPARA GUS
Asparagus is a favorite, especially when it is in season during spring. This veggie holds great flavor on its own, but can also be easily spruced up to satisfy even the most selective tastebuds. For spring season-themed preparation, sauté the spears over medium heat with a light drizzle of olive oil, some salt and pepper, and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. The trick is to wait until they are bright green and then remove them from the heat and just let them sit in the warm pan until you’re ready to plate. This allows for a nice crunch and keeps the asparagus from being overcooked and getting stringy.
*
Grapefruit use grapefruit in place of lemon or orange
Light, sweet, and classy. Those are the words that come to mind while sipping on this lovely springtime drink. Go about making your mint julep the original way (bourbon, water, sugar, mint, muddle, etc.). Then, shave an English cucumber and layer it into your glass, either between the ice cubes, or around the inside of the rim. That fresh cucumber flavor paired with the mint goes a long way.
A GLASS OF ROSÉ
>>DRINK GRAPEFRUIT SOUR
WHISKE Y
This delicious spin on the classic cocktail uses grapefruit in place of lemon or orange. The spring season welcomes freshness and crisp flavors, so naturally citrus fits right in. Try this with pink grapefruit to liven up the color of your garnish!
SOUR
BEER
Sours are perfect for springtime because they are often brewed with fresh fruit flavors and subtle notes of citrus and vanilla. All great things for this season! Sour beers are lighter in color and many different versions can be found all over craft breweries right now. Of course, these are mostly limited seasonal editions on draft, but cans may be available for purchase. Try a berry-inspired sour, like pomegranate and blueberry, or grapefruit and guava. They’re delicious!
Rosé can be sipped all year long, but it is especially delightful during the spring season. Rosé is a very versatile type of wine that pulls from both red and white characteristics, so it can be paired with pretty much any meal you would like. Try a glass this time of year with a rich salad like the watermelon radish salad, or with the lemon chicken! It is also a beautiful dessert wine stand-in because of its undertones of berries and citrus.

A Foodie's Guide
TO LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA
Lafayette is a buzzing city perched on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. They have the Cajun & Creole flavors you crave, along with the freshest in Louisiana seafood, and always a little something unexpected. Whether your tastes are for the more tradition fare like gumbo, jambalaya, and étouffée or something with a modern twist, the biggest challenge will be working out what not to eat.
Boudin Strictly for meat lovers, the Cajun creation known as boudin is exceptional. Variations abound, but it all starts with pork, followed by rice, and goes from there. You can try boudin all over Lafayette, but for the ultimate experience, why not try the Cajun Boudin Trail, which takes you on an open-air tour of the finest boudin in and around town. You can grab your boudin to go and enjoy it outside or in one of Lafayette's beautiful parks, making it a safe and truly pleasant way to enjoy one of the classic delicacies of Cajun cuisine.
Gumbo is one of Louisiana's signature dishes, and no foodie worth their salt should leave the state without trying this rich, flavorful dish. Gumbo It all starts with a cooked down oil and flour mixture called a roux, followed by adding almost anything else from vegetables to seafood. Charley G's Seafood Grill is one of the best spots in town to try gumbo, and offers a great selection from classic seafood to the more experimental smoked duck and andouille! They have a comfortable outdoor seating area and offer live piano music seven days a week in the bar.
.
Po'boys Pretty much the ultimate in comfort food, this classic sandwich was named after the local dock workers who pioneered this cheap, easy, mouth-wateringly delicious bite to eat. Whether you crave seafood, deli meats, or looking to try something unexpected, a Lafayette po'boy is a beautiful experience. Po'boys are casual, easygoing food, and best eaten on the go. Grab something traditional from Olde Tyme Grocery, or something more unexpected from Pops Po'boys, before strolling Downtown to grab a seat at a nearby parklet for one of the most authentic culinary experiences in Lafayette.
Crawfish A proper crawfish boil is one of Louisiana's great community traditions. While an invite may be hard to get, you can get the delicious taste of crawfish anytime in Lafayette without the hullabaloo of a large gathering.
Louisiana Crawfish Time is a seasonal joint open only when the crawfish are good (from January to June) and offers Acadiana's finest hot tails and cold half-shells. Best of all, their drive-thru is open seven nights a week, perfect for those who prefer to eat in the comfort of your own home when the craving hits!
Cajun Cuisine The Cajun culinary traditions have been taken up by a range of outstanding local chefs and given the fine dining twist. The city boasts some truly exceptional and sophisticated dining choices for those in the mood for something a little fancier. Manny Augello of Bread and Circus Provisions is a James Beard Award semi-finalist, and his food is a real breath of fresh air (quite literally, as they have a great outdoor dining area!). Cafe Vermilionville on the other hand is as sophisticated as it gets, offering a matchless fine dining experience, with courtyard dining and live music, which completes a wonderfully romantic ambiance. Lafayette is a serious haven for foodies and should be on every culinary traveler's list. You won't go far or wrong with the guide above, and full, satisfied bellies are guaranteed!

ucked within the beautiful Kettle Moraine State Forest, Plymouth is a small, charming Wisconsin town with the same thrills you’d find in a bigger city. With wonderful restaurants, expansive parks, historic downtown, a beautiful one-of-a-kind arts center, a ton of history, and of course, cheese, this is practically the perfect Wisconsin small town and you’ll soon realize that Plymouth is your kind of place. Stay for an hour, a day, or a weekend getaway, you’ll feel like a local before you leave. From friendship to family time to new discoveries, it all happens in Plymouth. UNIQUE TREASURES
Plymouth’s picturesque, historic downtown is filled with a number of great businesses while preserving a charming small town feel. Spend time in the charming shops and boutiques and you can check some names off your gift list while treating yourself to a few treasures. Throughout downtown you’ll find everything from pet supplies to books, musical instruments to home décor, clothing to floral arrangements and cupcakes, all showcased in attractive storefronts that create an experience as special as their products. GOOD EATS No matter what your palate, Plymouth’s cooking up something to satisfy. From quick and inexpensive to full service and gourmet, the options are endless. Start yourself off with some local brews at Plymouth Brewing Company. Or fill up on some of the best pizza in the state at Deo's Pizzeria. For a more classic Wisconsin experience, take in PJ Campbell's at the Depot for a supper club experience and authentic German food. Quench your thirst at Plank Road Distillery for handcrafted spirits and unique specialty cocktails featuring local ingredients. Enjoy a gourmet meal at Sweet Basil or The Fig and the Pheasant, authentic Mexican fare at Pacifico Mexican Bar and Grill, or a drive up experience at Chester’s. And make sure to hit The Hub or Exchange Bank for Plymouth’s café scene and comfortable meeting places.
INSPIRATION Plymouth was first settled back in 1845 and has been a center of dairy and cheese production pretty much ever since. Once the site of the National Cheese Exchange where cheese commodity prices were set, it now claims the mantle "Cheese Capital of the World" and is home to four major cheese processing facilities, including Sargento and Sartori. And no visit to Plymouth would be complete without sampling some of our local cheeses at area stores and shops. Since Plymouth is the Cheese Capital of the World, snap a photo in front of a local landmark, Antoinette! Antoinette stands 20 feet tall, was made out of fiberglass, and erected in 1977 as part of the Plymouth’s Centennial celebration. She honors the area’s legacy of dairy production. You can also learn about our deep cheese history at the newly opened Cheese Counter & Dairy Heritage Center, located in downtown. Wisconsin produces more than a quarter all cheese made in the US; if Wisconsin were a country, it would be the fourth largest cheese-producing country in the world. And tiny Plymouth is a huge player in that very large business. About 15% of all cheese from the US originates from or makes its way through Plymouth. DON’T MISS Plymouth offers a self-guided walking tour of historic downtown, listed in both the National Register and State Register of Historic Places, and includes 18 buildings that have been landmarked by the city. Make a point to enjoy, the 25 historically significant murals painted by the Walldogs in 2011, with 3 new murals planned for summer of 2021, throughout the quaint downtown area. Each mural captures the nostalgia and historic significance of Plymouth’s rich business history. Grab a map, get the family together, and head downtown to start the fun search for these beautiful murals!

Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Upper Cumberland, and straddling the state line between Tennessee and Kentucky, is a "jewel” – Dale Hollow Lake. Dale Hollow Lake can claim the designation of a jewel for many reasons: unsurpassed beauty, world-class fishing, houseboating, water sports of all kinds, and many others. From the Southeast to the Midwest, Dale Hollow has long been renowned as a vacation and fishing spot, and lays claim to the world record smallmouth bass. Dale Hollow means different things to different people, but its reputation cuts a wide swath.
Enjoy bass fishing, particularly smallmouth bass. Stay for a while and experience houseboating on Dale Hollow Lake. Pickaslip.com rated Dale Hollow as the top houseboating destination not only in the U.S., but on the continent, ahead of such vacationing heavyweights as Lake Powell in Utah and Lake Mead near Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.
Visitors will also enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling. The clarity of the lake is outstanding and has attracted divers from hundreds of miles away. Water sports in general come to mind when Dale Hollow is mentioned. A lot of folks want to ski, jet ski or "tube" on Dale Hollow, and there's no secret why. With over 600 miles of shoreline and nearly 28,000 surface acres of water, there is plenty of room for everyone to have fun. The lake is also known for its primitive camping and for the more sophisticated traveler, its developed campgrounds.
Certainly, among the most appealing features of Dale Hollow Lake is its rustic beauty. Through the impoundment of the Obey River, Dale Hollow was carved from the hills and valleys of the lower part of the Cumberland Plateau, an area known for its rugged, breathtaking landscape. Clay County is also home to six marinas on Dale Hollow Lake.
A visit to downtown Celina will make you fall in love. The quaint charm and friendly nature of all the locals will certainly make you feel at home. The downtown area has become something of an antique district in recent years, with shops specializing in antiques, primitives, collectibles, and other items. Local shops offer all types of collectibles, antiques, and souvenirs. All shops are within walking distance of each other, so enjoy a beautiful stroll downtown in the fresh Tennessee air. You will undoubtedly find something to take home with you. Grab a bite to eat – if you are hungry, there is plenty! Local fare ranges from down-home, country cooking to a unique kind of barbecue. With nearly two dozen options at your fingertips, your belly will be fully and happy in no time.
No matter if you’re looking for a fantastic lake destination or a vacation with a variety of downtown destinations, Dale Hollow Lake and Clay County, Tennessee have you covered. For more information, please visit dalehollowlake.org – where you’ll find guides, things to do, and so much more.
