Dear traveler, The 5th TravelTelly Magazine is a fact. Even though it is a challenge to publish this magazine when we’re also traveling and filming around the world, we love to share our (and your) photos/videos and stories about this beautiful world. We share cool travel apps and travel gear and give colleague travel photo/ videographers a place to showcase their work. To become a group of passionate travelers who capture this beautiful world, that is one of our missions. That is why we’ve updated the TravelTelly website, to start our own community where fellow photographers and videographers can meet each other. Be inspired by the videos of others, read interviews and discover travel film equipment or showcase your own work on our website. In this issue we describe our own experience of filming wildlife in Africa and we have an interesting interview with the people behind StoryTravelers, who make amazing travel videos with personal stories behind it, that you definitely have to check out. Africa has a special place in my heart. I’ve already visited this continent 5 times and still I’m impressed by the country’s natural beauty and the truly lovely people and their amazing culture. The smiles of the locals and the colorful culture when I filmed in the Masai Mara NR, which is also one of the most impressive places to photograph/film wildlife on this planet, all bring back good memories.

Tarangire national Park (Tanzania) Tarangire National Park is the 6th largest national park in Tanzania after Ruaha, Serengeti, Mikumi, Katavi and Mkomazi. The national park is located in the Manyara Region. The name of the park comes from the Tarangire river that crosses through the park, which is also the only source of water for wildlife during the dry season. Filming elephants was easy in Tarangire NP. Elephants are one of my favorite animals. They are so big and impressive, which makes me feel small as a human and makes me realize how incredible these animals are. Seeing young baby elephants in a large herd is awesome to see and capture and we we’re also lucky enough to see a large group of elephants crossing the Tarangir river.

Wildlife photo/video tips
Get a private driver/guide. This is more expensive but this way you will get more time to film and photograph, instead of being in a hurry because the group you’re with has to see ‘the big 5’. We photo/ videographers know that taking a nice shot will take time and when you do have more time you will also enjoy the moment more.
By letting your driver/guide know that you like to have some more time, helps you shoot your perfect video or photograph, because the driver will make a shorter round. This way you will have more time at the places you do visit.

Do a night drive to see and capture wildlife in their natural surroundings, you have a better chance of seeing them in the morning and at the end of the day. Making a night drive with a guide can create some awesome night wildlife shots. During the night, a completely new world of wildlife wakes up and gets active. Get your camera and lens ready that shoot the best pictures in a dark environment. Of course with a night drive the guide shows you the wildlife with a flashlight, but even then be prepared for low light conditions.

StoryTravelers Caspar Diederik
Can you explain to us what StoryTravelers entails? Storytravelers is a small network (tribe) of visual storytelling artists with a shared passion for genuine travel experiences. We work together in changing formations on projects for travel destinations that want to tell their story in a genuine and dynamic way: that is, we go and live a travel experience, capture it and tell about it with a personal interpretation..
How did you come up with the idea behind StoryTravelers? It started of with an idea to embed visual bloggers in eco lodges all over the world. That evolved into complete visual story campaigns for tourism boards.

Can you tell us something about your background as a filmmaker? Well, funny enough, I haven’t followed any relevant study or course. I’ve developed myself completely autodidact with the help of the wonder world of internet and of course a lot of trying. I studied social cultural sciences and ended up working in the direct marketing and sales, managing a business unit. At a certain stage I reached the end of my inspiration and felt the urge to create and to develop something myself. I left the company context, to travel from Cape Town to Nairobi alone to subsequently start an adventure called “my own life”. An interchange project for entrepreneurs called Erasmus, brought me to Italy, where I still live (already two years). Luckily I appeared to have a talent for film making and made a steep growth in just 2 years. Photography I’ve always been in to, that was actually a clear sign.
How did you meet and choose your fellow filmmakers at StoryTravelers? Some approached us, or we met somewhere, online, offline .. quite organically actually. It’s rather a network where like minded and independent filmmakers, but also photographers and bloggers can create together.

What is the main focus of StoryTravelers? We make videos about living a travel destination in an genuine and intense way. Meeting locals, trying new things, making contact, cultures. One that watches our videos will live a condensed experience through our eyes. There’s much to tell about the style. The videos are made with some important values and focus points in mind, here are a few: Spontaneity: our footage is captured in unprogrammed situations, that make our stories spontaneous. The editing is also a completely open and free process that makes room to get freestyle videos with a strong artistic component. Shareability: it’s important that people consider the videos worthwhile sharing, with other words that have a certain viral component, that make the story travel partly by it self online. To make sure a video is shareable, they should be remarkable, understandable, cause an emotion and tell a story. Storytelling: There’s always, explicitly or implicitly, some sort of a story to discover: characters, a plot, a container with a start and an end. Not just a compilation of images that bore easily. In that way the videos get more engaging,

What do you want to accomplish with StoryTravelers? I’d like to create visual stories with positive social impact with likeminded independent people that follow their heart. Doing what you like to do and be self sustaining and being able to work independent of place: Travel is great to tell about, but in the future I’d like to focus also on positive impact and change in other settings.
What is your favorite video that StoryTravelers produced and why? The latest video which is published on vimeo.com/62443473 (the video is not online yet, but just for the readers of TravelTelly Magazine we’ve made an exception and you can watch the video as a sneak preview: the password is ‘love’). It’s an intense video that I made of our journey through the province of Ferrara, Italy. It contains a lot of my own emotions and refers metaphorically to other important themes in life, like having the freedom and courage to follow your own path.

The CN Tower is a big part of what makes the skyline of Toronto so different

Harbor front A neighborhood on the northern shore of Lake Ontario within the
downtown core of the city. From here you can take some nice city shots as well as from the harbor itself, with the Amsterdam bridge. A series of free concerts is staged at Harbor front’s outdoor concert stage every weekend throughout the summer and in winter there is a free open-air ice rink.
4. Nathan Phillips Square Located in front of the City Hall, Nathan Phillips Square is a landmark in the centre of the city. During the summer the square is in motion daily, with people watching concerts and dance performances, viewing art at outdoor exhibitions. The Nathan Phillips Square is a nice place where many local people and tourists relax at, surrounded by government buildings. Around the square you will see a boulevard, which is situated a little higher, so it makes a perfect place for you to take photos/videos.

Downtown Toronto Taking the subway in Toronto is easy, especially when you
want to go to different places in the city. We experienced that it is also one of the cleanest subways in the world. Some nice urban places to capture include: the Hockey Hall of Fame; housed in a former bank erected in 1885, little Italy; one of the city’s oldest extant ethnic neighborhoods, University College at the University of Toronto; a beautiful building to capture. Eco project of the
Month Morrow Royal Pavilion

Las Vegas, USA is probably the last place you would think about when it comes to eco friendly projects. Given, Vegas is one of the most eco unfriendly cities in the world, because of its many (24 hour) casinos, hotels, never-ending traffic and it is one of the largest consumers of food and drinks. But even this overthe-top city is trying to contribute a little and agreed for an environmental designer to start an eco friendly project near ‘the entertainment capital of the world’. The Morrow Royal Pavilion was completed in 2012 and designed by Scott McCombs, owner of Realm of Design. He had the great idea of using discarded beer bottles of the casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, to build a huge pavilion. Over 500,000 beer bottles were crushed into GreenStone material, to use as bricks. This is also the reason why you would never know that the Pavilion is made out of beer bottles, because the GreenStone looks like normal sandstone bricks. It took about one year to complete the building. It has prevented thousands of beer bottles from heading to the junk yard and saved a space of eight football fields.

Charles Bridge Probably one of the most famous bridges found in Europe, is the Charles bridge; which crosses the Vltava river in Prague. It’s a beautiful bridge to take photos/videos from at different sides. The Charles bridge is a busy place, where many local people pass by and is definitely a touristic highlight. Part of the fact that this bridge is so beautiful and popular, are the 30 baroque statues situated on the balustrade. So don’t forget to walk over the bridge and capture these statues.

Prague Castle Prague Castle is the biggest castle in the world (according to Guinness Book of Records; the biggest ancient castle) at about 570 meters in length and an average of about 130 meters wide. The way to the castle is uphill, so it’s a bit of a hike with your camera gear and tripod but it is worth it. In and around the castle you have many spots where you can take a photo or video from. You’re not finished quickly at this place, because there is so much beautiful history to capture like the St. Vitus Cathedral. The castle buildings represent virtually every architectural style of the last millennium. The Prague Castle includes Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral, Romanesque Basilica of St. George, a monastery and several palaces, gardens and defense towers.
Old Town Square surrounded by historical buildings, the old town square brings you back into a historic scene and is the perfect place to make some busy tourist shots and capture a lively scene of people in a historic setting. PRAGUE Take your time, walk around and enjoy the beauty of this historical city Giant Baby Sculptures The sculptures by David Cerný, a Czech sculptor, are a must-see for everyone who wants to have a bit of fun on their city trip. His ‘giant babies’ climb the exterior of the Žižkov Television Tower and are also found outside of the Kampa museum.
We loved filming in Prague, as the city offers so many places that are great to capture. All the city’s tourist attractions are in walking distance and make Prague a must-visit city trip in Europe!

Travel Book of the month
There’s nothing more satisfying than coming home after having traveled to some amazing places and discovering that you’re landscape photographs captured everything in the same way that you experienced it. This is not always the case though, as sometimes the weather conditions weren’t great or you didn’t use the right angle or camera settings. ‘The ultimate field guide to landscape photography’ helps you to photograph landscapes in the best possible way. It explains everything from light to composition, from seascapes to rainy days and from which camera and settings to use to editing your photos on the computer.
