RESERVATIONS Unpaid reservations can be held for five days or until 1 hour prior to performance (which ever is the shorter period). LATECOMERS Please ensure that you allow sufficient time for your journey to the Traverse. Due to the intimate nature of our theatre spaces and performances, it is unfortunately not usually possible to allow late entry. This is because of the disruption caused to the audience and the performers. TRAVERSE BAR CAFE Serves delicious food until 10pm, drinks till late and hosts very special events. SOLD OUT PERFORMANCES For performances that sell out in advance, a waiting list for returns will be started one hour prior to the start time. This service is only available to personal callers at the Traverse and is limited to two tickets per person. EXCHANGES Tickets booked through the Traverse Box Office can be exchanged (availability permitting) for an alternative performance, or for credit, up to 24 hours prior to the start of the original performance booked. Exchanges are subject to an administrative fee of £1 per ticket up to a maximum of £5 per transaction plus the difference in ticket price (if applicable). Any resulting refund will be held as credit for use against any future purchase through the Traverse Box Office.

I’m really excited by and proud of our 2010 Festival programme. Long-time collaborators join newer companies in what is undoubtedly one of the biggest, most entertaining and most challenging seasons in our 47 years. Eighteen productions – 7 world premieres, 5 UK premieres and 4 Scottish premieres. Serious drama, comedy, music and dance appear alongside shows that refuse to be categorised. This all proves that the Traverse Festival continues to offer something new for everyone by presenting the familiar in unfamiliar ways. You’ll find all the details of our groundbreaking programme inside this brochure but I just want to draw your attention to the two Traverse Theatre Company productions. Sam Holcroft’s While You Lie headlines a programme of major new work. Sam developed her extraordinary talent in the Traverse’s Young Writers’ Group and more recently as our Pearson Playwright in residence. Her shocking new play will be one of the most talked-about shows at the festival. Over the last few years, we have been successfully serving up plays with our breakfast! This year we team up with Hibrow Productions to present a programme of staged readings of specially commissioned work by major writers from the UK and Ireland. These readings will be filmed live for later presentation on the internet, as well as for Traverse Live! - a special one-off live performance with simultaneous

Welcome to the Traverse Theatre Festival 2010 transmission to cinemas throughout the country (see page 5 for details). We’re celebrating the city of Edinburgh in all its glory this year with two outdoor shows and three venues outwith the Traverse building. I am equally delighted to welcome you to Edinburgh’s newly thriving cultural quarter. This has recently emerged from a major refurbishment primarily of our neighbouring Usher Hall but also landscaping of the area around us. If you are a regular visitor, or a first time visitor, thank you for your support in making our work such success both during the Festival and throughout the year. By popular demand, you’ll also notice that we are re-launching the much lamented Traverse Theatre Club (see page 28)! Her first play, Cockroach, was an instant sensation when it premiered as part of the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) and Traverse Theatre Debuts season. Zinnie Harris is a playwright and theatre director. By limiting the dancers to the five positions, Creed establishes a tight framework in which to examine the changing effects of time, speed and direction. Tim Crouch’s latest play is about the abuse carried out in the name of art. Performed within its audience, it tells the story of another play: a shocking and violent play written by a playwright who oversteps the line. The Author is a highly original and terrifyingly seductive journey into the horror of our mediated world. The Author sold out when it opened at the Royal Court Theatre in autumn 2009. The Traverse Theatre is delighted to be joining with IASH (Edinburgh University’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities) to welcome leading playwrights Jo Clifford and Linda McLean as Creative Fellows for 2010, based within the University. Both writers are being commissioned to write new plays for the Traverse and will be contributing to the Institute’s events during the tenure of their fellowships.
