SCOTLAND’S NEW WRITING THEATRE – see the familiar in unfamiliar ways

3

I’m really excited by and proud of our 2010 Festival programme. Long-time collaborators join newer companies in what is undoubtedly one of the biggest, most entertaining and most challenging seasons in our 47 years. Eighteen productions – 7 world premieres, 5 UK premieres and 4 Scottish premieres. Serious drama, comedy, music and dance appear alongside shows that refuse to be categorised. This all proves that the Traverse Festival continues to offer something new for everyone by presenting the familiar in unfamiliar ways. You’ll find all the details of our groundbreaking programme inside this brochure but I just want to draw your attention to the two Traverse Theatre Company productions. Sam Holcroft’s While You Lie headlines a programme of major new work. Sam developed her extraordinary talent in the Traverse’s Young Writers’ Group and more recently as our Pearson Playwright in residence. Her shocking new play will be one of the most talked-about shows at the festival. Over the last few years, we have been successfully serving up plays with our breakfast! This year we team up with Hibrow Productions to present a programme of staged readings of specially commissioned work by major writers from the UK and Ireland. These readings will be filmed live for later presentation on the internet, as well as for Traverse Live! - a special one-off live performance with simultaneous

“A finely balanced combination of the new, the established, the foreign and the home-grown. The Traverse is, in other words, the national theatre of the Fringe, a venue that is as much its crowning glory as its raison d’étre, its vibrant cutting edge as well as its establishment.” Mark Fisher, The Guardian

Welcome to the Traverse Theatre Festival 2010 transmission to cinemas throughout the country (see page 5 for details). We’re celebrating the city of Edinburgh in all its glory this year with two outdoor shows and three venues outwith the Traverse building. I am equally delighted to welcome you to Edinburgh’s newly thriving cultural quarter. This has recently emerged from a major refurbishment primarily of our neighbouring Usher Hall but also landscaping of the area around us. If you are a regular visitor, or a first time visitor, thank you for your support in making our work such success both during the Festival and throughout the year. By popular demand, you’ll also notice that we are re-launching the much lamented Traverse Theatre Club (see page 28)! If you would like more information on the benefits of becoming a member and how to join, just contact my colleague Fiona – Fiona.sturgeonshea@traverse.co.uk. We hope we have everything here at the Traverse from nine in the morning until late night to make your Festival experience unmissable and unforgettable. See you there!

While You Lie

by Sam Holcroft 6 – 29 Aug

“A playwright brave enough to do battle with the big ideas.” The Guardian

Previews 30 July and 5 Aug

Director Zinnie Harris Designer Alex Lowde Lighting Designer Lizzie Powell Cast Pauline Knowles, Claire Lams, Steven McNicoll, Andrew Scott Ramsay, Leo Wringer Small lies, little lies, tender lies, well-intentioned untruths. Ana calls Edward’s bluff on their disintegrating relationship and enters a deadly truthful world where honesty is celebrated in all of its dangerous glory. They don’t make women like Helen anymore: loving mother, home-maker, wife. But beneath the civilised veneer of her life, a dark truth threatens to surface. Two couples explore the threat of honesty and our perverse need for it in this blistering play from one of UK theatre’s most exciting new voices, Sam Holcroft. Her first play, Cockroach, was an instant sensation when it premiered as part of the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) and Traverse Theatre Debuts season. Zinnie Harris is a playwright and theatre director. Her stage plays include Fall for the Traverse Theatre Company (Traverse Festival 2008) and the award-winning Further Than the Furthest Thing (Tron/National Theatre). As a director she has worked for the NTS, Tron Theatre and the RSC. Most recently she has been writing for screen including Spooks (BBC1). Claire Lams who plays Ana Photo credit: Laurence Winram

Flesh and Blood & Fish and Fowl by Geoff Sobelle and Charlotte Ford 4 – 28 Aug Preview 3 Aug

Barricaded behind the doors of civilisation’s last office, co-workers rearrange the food chain in a feral mix of theatre, art and taxidermy. From the twisted minds of Charlotte Ford and Geoff Sobelle (2005’s sold out, smash hit all wear bowlers), comes their latest concoction of off-thechart physical humour and provocative storytelling. Returning to the festival for the first time since 2006, New York’s renowned Barrow Street Theatre is pleased to present Flesh and Blood & Fish and Fowl; the world’s greatest hour of existential clowning, about life, love, office politics and survival, culminating in an unforgettable, mind-blowing showdown between a ravenous natural world and the last humans on earth.

Director Lyndsey Turner If you haven’t met someone by the time you graduate, you’re going to marry some idiot from your work. It’s that simple. Do you know how they get animals to breed in captivity? They put them in the same cage. Office romances are tricky. One moment you’re colleagues, then a quick grope after Friday night drinks and suddenly you’re in a relationship. When Tom and Amy get together after an office social, they find themselves living in each other’s pockets. But it’s not their lack of chemistry that’s the problem: it’s that neither of them can quite get over their childhood sweethearts. A brand new comedy about love, loss and laminating machines. Decky Does a Bronco

The Scotsman

by Douglas Maxwell 5 – 21 Aug Director Ben Harrison Designer Allan Ross, Simon Owen. Costume Alice Bee Composer Philip Pinsky Cast Ross Allan, Finn Den Hertog, David Elliot, Nicky Elliott, John Kielty, Martin McCormick, Ben Winger, Gavin Wright To bronco a swing you stand on it, worky up to the bumps, kick the swing over your head and jump beneath it. It’s the summer of 1983. Five lads act out their dreams and fears in their local playground in Scotland. Broncoing is a sign of manhood – which Decky and his friends all impatiently await. This summer, little do they know how suddenly and abruptly it will be forced upon them… This powerful outdoor production is a boisterous look at the trials and triumphs of growing up. Multi-award winners Grid Iron return to the Fringe with this Scotsman Fringe First and Stage Award winning production. “Theatre that effortlessly breathes straight from the heart.” The Times “Spellbinding.” Daily Telegraph This is an outdoor performance. “One of the most perfect one act plays I’ve seen in ages” The Independent on Dream of the Dog by Craig Higginson

by Craig Higginson 6 – 29 Aug Preview 5 Aug

Director Malcolm Purkey Designer Gary McCann Lighting Designer Nomvula Molepo Cast Marianne Oldham, Nat Ramabulane Craig Higginson’s powerful new play is a dark, witty and sexually-charged psychological drama. Set in Paris, the play explores the relationship between Celia, a beautiful young English teacher, and Pierre, her French-Congolese pupil. Brimming with humour, rage and longing, this gripping play provides both a minute exploration of an increasingly hazardous romantic entanglement, and an insight into the tensions around class, race, language and identity that lie at the heart of present-day South Africa. An exciting new co-production from the internationally renowned Market Theatre from South Africa and two of the UK’s most prestigious theatre companies. www.citz.co.uk www.live.org.uk www.markettheatre.co.za

Text by Stef Smith. Director Cora Bissett Set & Costume Designer Jessica Brettle Sound Designer Harry Wilson Cast Adura Onashile, Mercy Ojelade, & John Kazek AV Designer Kim Beveridge Animation Designer Marta Mackovà Lighting Designer Paul Sorley It is very hard to prove my name, it is very hard to prove my age, it is very hard to prove my story in a court of law. It is very hard to prove anything. In Benin City, a young girl struggles to support her family. A world away, in an Edinburgh tenement, ‘aunty’ Martha arranges a job and flight for her. Journey with her on the bus that leads to a new life and discover the nightmare reality behind Martha’s promises. Based on the experiences of young women trafficked to Scotland, this production by award-winning theatre artist Cora Bissett (Midsummer [a play with songs]), combines chilling performances with video, animation and music to thrust you into the hidden world of sex-trafficking. Traverse ONE. World Premiere. England. 1 hr, 30 mins DANIEL KITSON

It’s Always Right Now, Until It’s Later by Daniel Kitson 11 – 29 Aug Preview 10 Aug

A new show by Daniel Kitson about Everything and Nothing I wanted to put something amazing where you wouldn’t expect to find it. To take the first moments of the morning and fill them with something silly and sad and wonderful. Something audacious in its scope and scale. Something to make you laugh and cry and wonder before the world even knows you’re awake. Something to stuff your hearts full and send you out, into the day and into the world, wet eyed and open mouthed. This is a show about every single one of us, the past in our pockets, the future in our hearts and us, ourselves; very much stuck, trapped forever, in the tiny eternal moment between the two. And, it’ll all be over in time for lunch. “Day by day nothing seems to change, but pretty soon everything is different.” Calvin (and Hobbes) www.danielkitson.com

Apples

“The drugs, the sex, the boozing… it all smacks beautifully of the real thing.” Time Out

by Richard Milward 11 – 28 Aug Preview 10 Aug

Adapted & Directed by John Retallack Designer Verity Quinn Cast Scott Turnbull, Therase Neve, Jade Byrne, Dylan Edge, Abigail Moffat, Louis Roberts The first stage-adaptation of Richard Milward’s remarkable debut novel. Shameless, ruthless and intensely poetic, Apples is a dazzling, tragicomic love story of adolescence. Enter the chaotic world of Adam & Eve – it’s a very different Eden where adults are absent and life is both terrifying and thrilling. Eve has tasted every kind of apple. Eight youngsters shut themselves off because they feel like it. They don’t know why exactly. In fact, they don’t even know what they want or don’t want but there’s enough lust, frustration, irritation to find out what’s shitty about the fact that they’ll become someone like you. A new performance by Alexander Devriendt, director, and the creative team behind the multi-award winning Once and For All We’re Gonna Tell You Who We Are So Shut up and Listen and Internal. Contains adult themes.
