Witnessing a festival or holiday will give you an insight into the joyous and hospitable nature the Turkish people. Religious holidays are linked to the lunar calendar and move back 11 or 12 days each year. Secular festivals also move to coincide with weekends and precise dates can change annually. During these major holidays, shops and businesses are closed, though local shops will usually reopen on the second or third day.

There are three main climatic zones in Turkey: The Marmara (which includes Istanbul), Aegean and Mediterranean regions. These have a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Temperatures rise the further south you go.

Machines usually offer a choice of languages in which to conduct your transaction, and dispense Turkish Lira.

Travellers’ Cheques These can be cashed at the foreign exchange desks of banks, and at post offices. But it is useful to bring a supply of foreign currency, either US dollars or Euros. To cash travellers’ cheques you will need your passport. As it can be costly and cumbersome to exchange travellers’ cheques, we do not recommend them. Credit cards and Debit Cards Most major cards, including Visa, Switch, Amex and Mastercard, are accepted by many shops, restaurants, hotels and petrol stations. Foreign Exchange Offices Doviz are usually the best places to make a straight exchange of foreign currency, almost always offering a better rate for cash than the banks. US Dollars and Euros can attract a better rate than less frequently traded currencies. These offices rarely accept travellers’ cheques. Taxes Taxes, chiefly GST (KDV in Turkish) are included in the prices of some goods and services at varying rates. You may notice them itemised separately on a bill or receipt. Some stores offer GST‐free shopping for tourists living outside the European Union (look out for signs in the window).

shopping Shopping in Turkey is a delightful and sometimes even educational experience! High‐fashion clothes can be purchased cheaply, as Turkey has a booming cotton industry and has become a cheap source of Western manufacture. Turkish leather is well known, but clothing and bags are usually higher quality than shoes. Look carefully at the quality of what you are buying, as it can vary enormously. It is hard to find a good bargain in the tourist areas. Try to shop in the more out‐of‐the‐way villages and towns, where you will probably find better quality at a more reasonable price. Where to Shop Turkey offers many different shopping experiences, from glitzy to more gritty. For a unique insight into Turkey’s shopping culture, visit the local bazaar. The amazing Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, a veritable labyrinth of shops and workshops, sells every imaginable product. Excellent local weekly street markets, which are ideal for buying Turkey’s wonderful fresh produce, if you are self‐catering. Flea markets can also be found there. You can also find vast user‐friendly shopping centres, like American shopping malls, complete with parking, supermarket, cinemas, food courts and international designer labels. What to Buy Excellent textiles, clothing, carpets, pottery, metalwork, semi‐precious and precious stones and jewellery, leather and glass can be found in Turkey. Carpets & Kilims You can’t leave Turkey without buying a traditional Turkish carpet or kilim. A carpet is a hand‐made rug with a raised pile, a kilim is flat woven. They can be made from cotton, wool, silk or a mixture. Designs and techniques are regional. You do not need to be an expert to buy a good carpet, but it helps. Within Turkey, certain places are carpet trading centres. The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is a renowned carpet trading area, and Cappadocia in central Anatolia is another, as dealers travel there to buy and makers to sell.

Old City Walking Tour A full day tour to explore Istanbul with our guide. This fascinating city bridges Europe and Asia and, under the name Byzantium and Constantinople was the capital of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, until, in 1453 it became the third and last Capital of the Ottomans. Visit the Blue Mosque, renowned for its six minarets and the beautiful Iznik tiles whose dominant shade of blue gives the mosque its name. Hagia Sophia is a World Heritage site - built in 537 AD and to this day an architectural marvel which was built as a basilica, was converted to a mosque and is now a museum. The Hippodrome nearby was where political, cultural, and sports activities took place during Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman times. The day will end with a visit to the Islamic Arts Museums.

Walking Ottoman Tour In the morning we will explore Topkapi Palace, the opulent residence of the Ottoman sultans overlooking the Bosphorus between the end of the 15th and the first half of the 19th centuries. You will discover why it is renowned for its treasures and jeweled captivity of its infamous Harem. Later, we will take you to the Grand Bazaar, the world’s largest covered market, with centuries of history.

Day 5 Tue Cappadocia

In the morning we fly out to Nevsehir in central Anatolia - Cappadocia. We will start exploring the area by a visit to Kaymakli Underground City, followed by a break at the most picturesque spot of Cappadocia, the Goreme Valley. We’ll break for lunch and in the afternoon we will visit a ceramics factory and a carpet making workshop, and learn about traditional crafts and designs.

Day 6 Wed Cappadocia

Walking Tour Optional balloon trip early morning. A full day tour to explore the rugged beauty of this fantastic

region. The winding landscape is decorated at every twist and turn with a maze of cones, slopes and fairy chimneys, products of centuries of windand rain. Walk in the Red Valley, followed by lunch and in the afternoon visit Goreme open-air museum, where churches were carved into the stone between the 4th-13th centuries and are decorated with frescoes that provide a record of early Christianity. Day 7 Thu Cappadocia

Walking Tour Today, we will explore South Cappadocia. We will visit Soganli Valley, and a small village amongst the rock faces of fairy chimneys. People here still live in these caves and bake their bread in the village bakery which can be seen on tour, children play around the valleys on a donkey back or welcoming tourists to their village, trying to sell a doll for a few dollars to make a living. Day 8 Fri Cappadocia

Walking Tour Ihlara Valley is about 100 kms south of Urgup, It is a natural beauty 14 kms in length, with a little stream running through the valley. Rock churches can be visited. We will walk 4-5 kms down the valley and lunch beside the river. Driving back we will visit the Agzikarahan Caravanserai. These structures were once used as ‘camel stops’ or ‘motels’ in the ancient times where Silk Road used to be in use.

Day 9 Sat Konya

Konya: the capital of the Sultanate of Rumi and the holy city of the Seljuk Turks. We will stop at the largest and most well preserved Caravanserai of Sultanhan on our drive to Konya. We will visit the Museum of Mevlana, the famous mystic and philosopher who founded the Sufi Order of the Whirling Dervishes in the 13th century. A visit to Karatay Medrese this afternoon will end our day in Konya.

Day 10 Sun Antalya

First we will have a leisurely drive to Catalhoyuk which is the site of a very large Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlement in southern Anatolia, which existed from approximately 7500 BC to 5700 BC. It is the largest and oldest Neolithic site ever found to date. Our drive will continue through the Taurus Mountains to Antalya, overlooking the Turquoise depths of the Mediterranean. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 11 Mon Antalya

From Antalya we will drive to Aspendos, where the 2C AD theatre is the best preserved Roman theatre in Asia Minor. Continue to Perge, and visit this other Hellenist-Roman ancient city with its stadium, colonnaded street and theatre. Visit nearby Side before our drive back to Antalya.

Day 12 Tue Free Day In Antalya

Antalya is a beautiful city on Mediterranean coast of Turkey, today will be a free day at leisure. You can spend the whole day on a beach, or art galleries, or simply explore the old city. We recommend visiting the museum, a small gem which gives invalu-

able insight into the sites we have visited. Or stroll in the narrow streets of the picturesque old town (kaleici) with its narrow streets and typical wooden houses overlooking the marina, to discover the Hadrian Gate, the Fluted Minaret, the Truncated Minaret, and Hidirlik Tower.

Day 13 Wed Pamukkale, Hierapolis

Through beautiful countryside, we drive to Pamukkale, a unique natural site. Visit the “Cotton Castle” formation where the hot waters, leaving their limestone deposits, have created an unreal landscape with petrified waterfalls and basins. Hierapolis is an ancient Roman health spa whose well preserved necropolis is one of the largest in the ancient world. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 14 Thu Aphrodisias And Ephesus

In the morning, drive first to Aphrodisias, the ancient city dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of Beauty, Love and Fertility, also famous for its school of sculpture. Visit the stadium, which is the best preserved in Anatolia, and the Temple of Aphrodite, the Tetrapylon, the Theatre, the Museum. Continue through the plain of the Meander River to reach the imposing city of Ephesus, one of the most famous and fascinating in the ancient world. Walk down the Marble Street, see the Agora,the Odeon, the Nympheaum of Trajan, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Celsius Library. Walk through the Roman villas (opt) and see how the well-to-do lived. Drive to Selcuk for overnight stay.

Visit the Mausoleum of Ataturk, the father of modern Turkey. After lunch, continue to Cappadocia. Dinner and overnight.

Take a full day to discover Cappadocia. Visit the Goreme Valley, an open-air museum with rockhewn churches (7th-13th centuries) adorned with biblical frescoes. At a handicraft center, learn about the arts of rural Turkey and watch a demonstration on handmade rugs. Tour an Underground City. Early morning flight to Kayseri and short drive to Cappadocia , arrival to the ‘moon-like’ landscape of Cappadocia. Drive to Soganli valley, which was continuously inhabited since the earliest days of the Christian era, has churches that date from the 9th to 13th centuries. Some of the churches contain inscriptions giving the exact dates of construction and thus have provided scholars with valuable clues to help date other churches in Cappadocia. Soganli, like other valleys in Cappadocia, exemplifies the harmony between man and nature. Tonight Optional: Whirling Dervishes performance in a Cave setting.

After breakfast visit the Byzantine frescoed chapels at Goreme then continue to Ozkonak, tour the Pigeon valley Avcilar, the eight-story underground city, and a local pottery making village, Avanos and finally. Visit to a home of a traditional Turkish Family. Tonight dinner in a traditional Cappadocia restaurant (Cultural Museum Restaurant built in an old Turkish House and incorporated in an Ethnographical Museum). Overnight in Cappadocia.

Leaving Antalya, travel over the Taurus Mountains to the Greco-Roman city of Sagalassos, a recently excavated archeological gem. After lunch, drive to Pamukkale. Dinner and overnight.

In the morning, admire the unreal landscape at the ‘Cotton Castle’ of Pamukkale with its white terraces of limestone deposited by thermal waters through the ages. See the ancient spa, Hierapolis, still used today. Discover the necropolis, one of the largest cemeteries from antiquity to the present. After lunch, drive to Aphrodisias, the ancient site dedicated to the goddess of beauty, love, and fertility. Appreciate Anatolia’s best-preserved stadium. After breakfast, visit Ephesus; discover one of the world’s best places to visualize an ancient Roman city. View the remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Day 6 Thu Suvla Bay, Shell Green

Today we head to Sulva Bay, where some of the first British Pals Battalions joined the action in August 1915. Here we study the landings and also look at the history of the lost battalion, 1/5th Norfolk: the men from the Sandringham Royal estate who disappeared during the fighting in Sulva Bay. We also visit the new museum in Anafartalar before returning to ANZAC Cove to visit the now peaceful Shrapnel Valley cemetery and walk up to Shell Green where the Australians infamously played cricket in full view of the Turks. Late morning we board our Gulet amd cruise Turunc Bay or Red Island before enjoying lunch on board. This afternoon we continue to either Domuz Island or Merdivenli Bay to drop anchor for the evening.

Breakfast is served on deck before continuing the cruise to Cleopatras Baths (Hamam Bay), Bedri Rahmi Bay. Afterwards we cruise to Flat Island where we have lunch and then we set sail towards Tersane Bay for the evening.

Day 3 Gocek Island

Today we cruise to Gocek Island to swim, snorkel or just laze in the sunshine. After lunch, we cruise to Katranci Island and last stop in Red Island or Samanlik Bay. Boat will be back in harbour latest at 18.00.

We board the Gulet at Bodrum around 3:30 pm. Relax with a welcome drink at the pre-cruise information session. Enjoy an onboard dinner while meeting the other passengers.

Day 2 Mon Kos

After breakfast, we cruise to Kos, the 2nd largest of the 12 Dodecanese Islands.

Day 3 Tue Nisiros, Tilos

Early in the morning we head to Gyali Island and have swimming break. Then we will sail to Nisiros for overnight stay.

Day 4 Wed Simi

We will sail to Symi Island and anchor at a near bay to Symi Harbour for lunch and swimming break before overnight stop.

Day 5 Thu Rhodes

Early morning we cruise to Rhodes the largest of the Dodecanese Islands and spend the afternoon visiting Rhodes.

Day 6 Fri Datca, Knidos

Today we head back to the Turkish coastal town of Datca before headis to Knidos.

Day 7 Sat Poyraz, Bodrum

In the morning we cruise for Karada and Poyraz Bay. Afterwards we will cruise to Bodrum Port for dinner and overnight.

An early start for Yesilkoy, for breakfast and time to swim in this quiet bay surrounded by olive groves before our overnight stop in Kas, a small harbour town with a charming bohemian atmosphere.

Day 4 Tue Kekova

A short cruise along the Mediterranean coast to the ruins at Kekova � the Sunken City. Sailing to Gokkaya Bay to spend the night.

Day 5 Wed Simena

Climb up to the castle on Simena for a spectacular view of the ancient city. Out in the bay, overlooked by a theatre carved into the rock, a single Lycian sarcophagus sits on its pedestal in the water. The night is spent in the wide bay surrounded by green hills, at nearby Ucagiz.

Kalkan, a picturesque harbour town set on the hillside, where you can explore the cobbled winding streets or take an optional trip to nearby Patara Beach or the ruins at Xanthos and Letoon (group option).

Day 7 Fri Camli Burun

After an early start to Camli Burun, a natural bay edged with pine-clad hills, your last night on board is spent in Batikkaya Bay.

Start the day with a walk in Red Valley, famous for its rocks capes, local culture and historical sites. At the end of your walk you will reach Cavusin Village. Here a spectacular rock castle that once housed everyone in the village is awaiting you. Continue driving to Kaymakli Underground City, one of the best preserved and most visited Underground Cities in Cappadocia. It contains all the usual rooms found in an underground city (stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, churches, wineries etc.) Continue to Pigeon Valley a spectacular view of old abandoned pigeon cots hollowed out of the caves. At the end of your tour transfer to Bus terminal or Airport.

Day 1 Cappadocia, Nemrut Mountain

Pick up from Hotel in the morning and hit the road for Kahta. Passing Kayseri city en route, the 13th century Seljuk Caravanserai ‘Karatayhan’ will be visited. The next stop is Pinarbasi for a short tea break. Then keep driving to Tekir for Lunch. After taking pictures of the gorgeous scenery of the Tekir Valley the drive to Kahta will continue. Check-in to Hotel at the slopes of the Nemrut Mountain. Dinner and overnight.

Day 2 Nemrut -Harran

A very early departure in the morning is awaiting you in order to view the sunrise at the summit of Mt.Nemrut. Drive by Car as far as the road will allow you after which the climb will be by walk for apprx. 25 minutes till you reach the summit. Once there watch the beautiful sun rise between the colossal size statues and heads of the kings and Gods. After sun rise, your guide will give information about Commagene Kingdom and the statues while walking around and taking pictures. Then drive back to the hotel for breakfast. On the way down visit the ruins of the Arsemia Roman bridge of Cendere and Tumulus Tomb of Karakus. Keep driving to Sanliurfa and Harran. On your way, you will visit the Ataturk Dam which is the biggest dam in Middle East. Check-in to our hotel in Sanliurfa,

Today you will be visiting Esentepe Panoramic view point first. With a spectacular view over Göreme see the complete view of Göreme valley and village. Then continue driving to Derinkuyu Underground City, one of the best preserved and deepest

Underground Cities in Cappadocia. Derinkuyu is excavated to a depth of approximately 85 m. BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS monies received by Fairy Chimneys Travel will be deposited as required by law. We will be entitled to keep for each account any interest earned on such monies. It is a condition of our confirmation of your booking and acceptance of your deposit in respect of your tour, that all monies paid by you to us through your agent, whether by way of deposit or otherwise in respect of your tour, may be disbursed by us as and when we see fit or in respect of the services to be provided or fees payable under the tour programme, and the payment of a deposit or otherwise for your tour, will be deemed to be a discretion to disburse such monies as aforesaid. RESPONSIBILITY Orfimar Pty Ltd (ACN 098 803 742 License No: 32462) trading as Fairy Chimneys Travel, referred to as the Operators, are the agents for other international providers, who have empowered the Operators on its behalf to undertake the following duties: The Operators shall be responsible to the passengers for supplying the services and accommodations described, except where such services cannot be supplied or the itinerary used is changed due to delays or other causes of whatever kind or nature beyond the control of the Operators. In such circumstances, the Operators will do their best to supply comparable services, accommodations and itineraries and there shall be no refund in this connection. This brochure or web page represents the entire agreement between the passenger and the abovementioned Operators. In the absence of their own negligence, neither the Operators nor their agents or cooperating organizations shall be responsible for any cancellations or for acts of any other service providers concerned, diversions or substitution of equipment of any act, variations, postponements, omission or default whatsoever by air carriers, land carriers, hoteliers or hotels, transportation companies, or any other persons providing any of the services and accommodations to passengers including any results thereof, such as changes in services, accommodations or facilities necessitated by same. Nor shall they be liable for any loss or damage to baggage or property, or for injury, illness of death, or for any damages or claims whatsoever arising from loss, negligence or delay from the act, error, omission default or negligence of any

person not their direct employee or under their exclusive control, including any act, error, omission, default, or negligence of any country, government or governmental authority, officer or employee. All baggage and personal effects are at all times and in all circumstances at the risk of the tour participant. Baggage insurance is recommended. The carriers, hotels and other suppliers who provide services on tour are independent contractors; they are not agents, employees or servants of the Operators or their associated companies. The Operators are not responsible for any criminal conduct by third parties. Where the passengers occupies a motor-coach seat fitted with a safety belt, neither the Operators nor their agents or co-operating organizations or service providers concerned will be liable for any injury, illness or death or for any loss or damages or claims whatsoever arising from any accident or incident, if the safety belt is not being worn at the time of such accident or incident. Transportation companies, airlines etc. are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not on board planes, transportation or conveyances. The passenger contracts in use by the airlines or transportation companies when used shall constitute the sole contract between the airline, transportation company and passenger or purchaser of this tour and the Operators assume no responsibility in this connection. Enrolment in and payment for a tour shall constitute agreement and acceptance by the passenger of the terms and conditions set forth in this brochure or web page which cannot be varied except in writing by an officer of the Company. It does not accept any responsibility or liability for any of the acts, omissions or defaults, whether negligent or otherwise, of its principal companies, or any of the companies of the Orfimar Pty Ltd group of companies. What travel documents will I need? Australian citizens must have a valid passport, valid for six months beyond the date of return to Australia. You will need to present your passport to board your return flight. Carry your passport with you at all times and do NOT pack it in your suitcase. As a precaution, make a copy of the photo page and pack it in a separate location. This will help with replacement, if you lose it while travelling. How much luggage should I bring? As little as possible! Fairy Chimneys Travel recommend you tour with one piece of luggage, plus one carry-on bag. Remember if you are travelling by ferry, hydrofoil, inter-island airline, or rental car, luggage space is quite limited. What clothing should I bring? In the summer months (May-September), bring casual, lightweight clothing. A shawl, sweater or light jacket is recommended for cooler evenings. In the spring/autumn (March-April, October-November), a wardrobe that allows layering for warmth is best. Lightweight woollens and a raincoat with zip-out lining are suggested. Bring comfortable walking shoes. If you will be hiking, over-the-ankle, Vibram-soled hiking boots are required. Jeans and slacks are acceptable, but you may wish to pack suitable clothing for evening events. Some restaurants in metropolitan areas require a tie and jacket for men. Are there any dress requirements at monasteries or mosques? In Turkey, the faithful are called to prayer five times a day. So avoid visits during prayer time. When visiting a mosque, visitors must remove their shoes and show respect. At churches and monasteries, women are required to wear long dresses or skirts and sleeved blouses (covering the shoulders and knees). Men are required to wear slacks and a shirt. Will I be able to find a Laundromat? Laundromats are not so accessible to travellers, so bring laundry detergent and be prepared to wash clothes in your sink. Luckily, clothes dry quickly in the Mediterranean climate. Of course, some hotels provide a laundry service. What about electricity? The standard household electrical current throughout Turkey is 220v AC. You will require an adaptor to plug in Australian electrical devices.

Health Requirements

What are the health requirements - do I need any vaccination? No vaccinations are required for Australian citizens travelling to Turkey. It is always prudent to check with your regular doctor regarding your health before you travel. Can I get my medications while travelling? You may not find the same medication in Turkey, or be able to fill your doctor’s prescription. So bring enough prescription medication for your whole time away. If you wear prescription glasses or sunglasses, bring along an extra pair for backup. Can I drink the water? Bottled water is recommended.

Currency, Money & Tipping

What is the currency of Turkey? The currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira. Since exchange rates fluctuate daily, check your local newspaper or contact your bank for the most current rate. Should I exchange my money before I go? It is not necessary to change money in Australia before you travel. Nor do we recommend it, because you lose dollar value in the exchange. There are exchange banks in all major airports and you can change money at hotels, train stations, banks, and post offices. You may also be able to withdraw cash from Turkish ATMs with your Visa, Master Card or American Express automatic teller machine (ATM) card. What about tipping? Waiters, drivers, hotel personnel, bellboys, bus drivers, and guides are usually tipped. Eating establishments include a 15% tip on the bill. It is also customary to leave an extra 5-10% for the assistant waiters who do odd jobs around the table. Baggage handlers expect a tip of $2 per bag. On both organised and private tours, guides are customarily tipped $10-$15 per person per day; drivers are tipped $5-$7 per person per day. Taxi drivers do not expect a tip.
