LETTER from the EDITOR After a semester’s close, I’d like to kick back and spend time with loved ones, but since becoming Editor-in-Chief, this has proven to be a luxury not an expectation. Fall 2014 has been a whirlwind of work from all departments in TRAX. We have grown as a magazine and we are excited to show you where we are headed. The entire magazine production process has taught us so much. There were challenges that have seemed insurmountable, but as a team, the executive staff, senior staff, and members put forth a great deal of effort and conquered them. The more exciting parts of the process were the successes. Three shoots were coordinated with clothing loaned to us from boutiques and our very own bookstore. We blogged about relevant ongoings in the fashion and beauty industry and shared those articles on our social media outlets. TRAX partnered with The Purple Onion Cafe for our first fundraiser. Articles focused on seasonal and local happenings to put a focus on Minneapolis which, before now, we’ve never done. Graphic designers came together and completed the magazine to the polished product you see now. Every individual had a large part in making TRAX Fashion Magazine a success this semester. All the executive staff members were new to their positions and it is incredible to see how well everyone has adjusted. Sadly, Andrea Falle, our accomplished Art Director, will be graduating and leaving TRAX. Thank you Andrea for everything you have done. We look forward to creating an even stronger magazine next semester. With the direction we are going, I’m sure it will be. I cannot wait to see how we grow from the lessons we’ve learned.

Best Wishes in this New Year,

A bi g ail Zamis

to suits. Sneakers have made a frequent appearance at fashion shows from CHANEL, to Dior, to Prada, even in their Haute-Couture shows. Adidas has since updated its classic Stan Smith shoe, and labels like Raf Simons and Colette have revised them by incorporating highfashion touches of their own. This past summer, Stan Smiths were so popular, that they were almost impossible to find in any size, men’s or

Casual & Comfortable Style doesn’t always have to hurt! By Eve Lewis

The casual shoe trend: whether it be slip-ons, slides, or traditional lace-up sneakers, it all started with Celine designer Phoebe Philo. In September 2010, while thanking the audience of her Spring 2011 fashion show, she wore a pair of classic white and green Stan Smith sneakers. It took a while for the trend to take off, though. It wasn’t until Spring 2013 when Texas Senator Wendy Davis sported a pair of pink Mizuno Wave Rider 16 running shoes (in place of her usual heels) on the Senate floor for her 11-hour filibuster that the rest of the world finally followed lead. Ever since that bold fashion choice, women and men alike have sported sneakers and other casual shoes with everything from jeans

women’s. High street brands like Zara, Gap, J. Crew and H&M have also come out with their own variations of casual shoes. As sneakers have become acceptable everyday footwear, so have slip-ons and slides. Black leather sneakers, leopard calf-hair slip-ons, and gold lame slides are just a few of the must-have shoes of the past few seasons, and they are here to stay for Spring 2015. You no longer look like an American tourist by wearing sneakers, a gym rat by wearing slides with socks, or a skateboarder by wearing slip-ons. All of the sudden, it has become very refreshing and cool to contrast an otherwise feminine outfit with a tomboyish choice for footwear. And given the practicality and comfort level of a pair of flat shoes, this trend is surely (or at least hopefully) to continue pleasing fashionable women around the world for multiple fashion seasons to come.

Work Alert! Tips on what to wear and how to present yourself in an interview from staff writer Lauren Engelhart

So you finally got your resume through to a company and you have an interview. This next step may be the most important in figuring out your future. In college, interviews for big-time internships or future jobs are a big and scary addition to your life on campus. You researched the company, practiced all the interview questions, but something’s missing. It’s important that you portray yourself as a promisingcandidate for the job, yet unique 7

enough to stand out in a crowd. And then it hits you: you need the perfect interview outfit. The best way to be prepared for interviews is to know how to dress for them. With a great outfit, you will have all the confidence you need to land your dream job.

Here are a few rules to go by when getting ready for the interview...

Less is more. This is key to making a great impression. If you are debating on whether to add that necklace and earrings or bracelet, just keep in mind that the fewer accessories you wear, the better it is. Length. This is important if you are a dress or skirt person. Longer is ALWAYS better. You want to appear professional, after all, you are interviewing for a job. Never wear something you could also wear out on the weekends. Blazers. You can NEVER go wrong with a blazer. This is a much more professional and put together look than a cardigan or anything else. Blazers broaden your options greatly. If a dress doesn’t have sleeves, definitely add a blazer. Shoes. Make sure you chose shoes that are closed toe and have a back to them. It is important to keep the heel and the details to a minimum. Nail polish. It is a huge turn off to employers if you have a crazy funky nail polish color or fake nails. Try to keep it to a simple color that does not draw attention to your hands. A simple and classic French manicure works. A subtle nude or light pink color is also nice. While it seems there are many limitations in dressing for interviews, remember that you can let your personality shine in subtle ways. Colors, patterns, and textures all lend themselves well to showing who you are. Just remind yourself that the most important thing you can wear to an interview is confidence. Show that you’re ready to take on challenges and let your clothes follow suit.

MAY YOUR WARDROBE BE

MERRY 9

&

BRIGHT By Lauren Engelhart

A guide to get you going on how to dress up for the holidays 10

May Your Wardrobe be

MERRY & BRIGHT The holidays are a great time of year for many reasons, but fashion is one of our favorites. The holiday season is a fun time to bring out all of your festive ideas, but don’t start looking like a decoration. Keep it simple, yet fun.

HERE ARE A FEW OUTFIT IDEAS TO ROCK AT YOUR HOLIDAY PARTIES PRINTS & PATTERNS Don’t be afraid to mix and match your top and bottom pieces. Try a simple printed top with a sequin skirt or vice versa! Just remember to choose one print in a large scale and one in a small scale so it doesn’t look like you went overboard.

BACK STATEMENT Try a dress or a top with an open back but a high front. This will add a dramatic and fun detail while keeping it classy.

HOLIDAY COLORS If you choose different shades of classic holiday colors, you won’t look too kitschy. Try pairing a gold skirt with an evergreen top, or a white dress with subtle navy accesories.

PLAY WITH DETAIL During the holiday season, sequins and sparkles are your friend, and they don’t just have to be limited to your accessories. Everything is covered in sequins lately, so get shopping and experimenting.

FUN SHOES Get a fun pair of shoes you wouldn’t normally wear out. This is the perfect time to show them off and be confident. Maybe grab some off the shelf that you don’t see yourself normally wearing!

JEWELRY Don’t be afraid to rock as many jewels as you want. Add a statement necklace to a simple shirt or a sparkly pair of earings if you’re wearing your hair up.

11

Have fun and be merry with your outfits this year. There are endless possibilities and infinite combinations. Let your creativity and festivity run wild!

ability to add more style to your look with colorful accessories such as scarves and hats. Don’t be afraid to spend a little more on a parka, because you will be wearing this coat everyday for at least 4 months (if not more), and for many seasons to come! lIGHTER coAT Although there will be many months of very cold weather, the switch in seasons before and after the Winter will make a parka a little bit excessive. Don’t forget to buy a second lighter coat. Anything like a short, down filled coat, wool peacoat, or long wool jacket works. Whatever it may be, don’t worry about having two jackets. For most of the year you will wear jackets and parkas.

I

t is undeniable that women have a hard time dressing well in the winter months. And in Minnesota, where the temperature is extremely cold during the wintertime, it’s especially hard to look fashionable. Truthfully, as Minnesotans, we have to compromise between weather-proofed and fashion-forward. To inspire you to try different things when you wake up, here are a few tips and street style pictures for Winter style inspiration. Parka If you don’t already have a parka (or if you have one that just doesn’t excite you), invest in a nice one from Canada Goose, J. Crew, or another brand. This season, utility-style parka’s with fur trimmed hoods are especially trendy. Make sure you choose a color that will easily coordinate with a variety colors. This will give you the

Scarves are a great way to switch it up and prevent looking like you are always wearing the same thing.

An assortment of thick scarves Here is where you can let your creativity and personal style really shine. If you live here in Minnesota, there is no such thing as having too many scarves. Buy them in a chunky knit or printed wool for those super cold days. For warmer days, keep lighter ones on hand. Remember, the cold season in Minnesota is so long, that your outerwear practically becomes your everyday outfit. Scarves are a great way to switch it up and prevent looking like you are always wearing the same thing.

FASHION

A hat and gloves/mittens With the differing degrees of cold, it is best to invest in both mittens for extremely cold days and a nice pair of neutral gloves for those nicer days. Hats, gloves, and mittens are a great way to switch up your daily cold weather uniform. Snow boots and regular leather boots As with jackets, it is best to have at least two boot options on hand for different cold weather days. Snowy days will obviously make stylish snow boots your friend. However, you don’t have to wear snow boots every day of the season. Buy a nice pair of stylish leather boots for the days where the sun is shining and most of

the snow is shoveled (or melted) away. Layers of sweaters It’s a Minnesotan truth that you can never have too many sweaters. Although you might be tempted to buy cute, thin or short sleeved tops, remember to take a step back and think about what you tend to reach for on the morning of a cold winter day. An array of comfortable and stylish sweater options will allow you to switch it up everyday and never feel unbearably cold walking around or listening to a lecture in class.

15 Ways to Tie a Scarf

Scarves are our go-to fall accessory, but it’s time to spice things up! By Lauren Engelhart

It is that time of year again where we can wear scarves to keep us warm. Adding a scarf to your outfit creates infinite possibilities to be creative and stay warm as well. I am a big fan of all kinds of scarves from the big comfy knit to a lighter fabric with a cool design. A great way to change up your outfit and use the same scarf over and over again is to tie them in different ways. This way you can wear your favorite scarf as much as you want while also changing it up.

Check out the illustrations from thewonderforest.com that shows 15 awesome ways to tie your scarf. I personally love numbers three and nine and plan to try them out next time I want to wear a scarf. It is fun to collect different scarves but it is also nice to be able to wear you’re favorite as many times as you can.

SPIDER LASHES

A new way to up your mascara game

I

by Madison Dick

n the past wearing lots of mascara and having slight clumps on your eyelashes was not cute and definitely frowned upon. Light, natural lashes were always better, and clumpiness was not a thing. However, this season bigger, bolder, spider lashes are definitely back in style. This looks helps frame your eyes and make you look amazing. Makeup artist Pat McGrath quoted in Elle, “This season is about completely chunky, cloggy lashes,” referencing the gorgeous spider lashes she created for Gucci. The trick to this look is to wear several coats of mascara in order to make your eyelashes huge and gorgeous. This look can be achieved by doing several coats of mascara, waiting for the first layer to dry before applying another coat, and finishing off the look by adding one last layer to the very tips of your eyelashes. If you’re nervous about looking too clumpy finishing off your eyelashes with an eyebrow comb will help

to make sure all lashes are the same thickness and length. This will add consistency to your eye and have you looking beautiful and bold without large clunks hanging off your eyes. These eyelashes combs are super affordable only, $4.99 at Target. According to Cosmopolitan you don’t even need to put on extensions to achieve these eyelashes. Cosmo recommends several awesome mascaras that are not super expensive and work really well. These include Covergirl Lashblast Clump Crusher Mascara, Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara, Hypnose Star, and Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effect Faux Cils Babydoll. These are all under $30 and can be found at Sephora or your local drug store. These mascaras will help you achieve the super trendy spider lash look without breaking your bank. Shopping Lifestyle also recommends using a lash curler before applying mascara to get this look. I recommend putting Vaseline around your eyelids so that you can properly apply mascara without worrying about getting excess mascara all around your eye. Then, once you’re finished you can easily wipe off the excess mascara from your eyelid with a Q-tip. This will ensure that all your eyelashes will be sufficiently coated with mascara and you will accurately rock these killer eyes. http://www.elle.com/beauty/hair/best-in-show-fall-2011-572733-7#slide-7 http://www.cosmopolitan.com/style-beauty/beauty/advice/g3359/best-mascaras/ http://www.shoppinglifestyle.com/beauty/kim-kardashian-spider-lashes/1782/1/

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR HAIR? ARE YOU DOING IT TOO MUCH? By Kaitlyn Swanson

In the past few weeks I’ve had several conversations with girls where we end up discussing how often we wash our hair. There are always seamed to be two sides to the question: every other day and everyday. That brings me to the question every girl is asking nowadays; how often should I wash my hair? That’s the thing; there is no straightforward answer to that question. It all depends on you and your hair. Thinner hair requires more frequent washes, whereas thicker hair can last longer in-between washes. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But my hair is always so greasy if I don’t wash it everyday!” True, true. I had the very same reaction, but I’ve learned that you need to train your hair. Train my hair? What? Let me explain. When you wash your hair everyday you strip your hair of its natural oils, so, to compensate for the loss it produces more oil. You see the problem? In all actuality, if you go long enough without washing hair it will start to wash itself. But, that’s really gross, so please don’t let your hair get to that state. It only takes about a week to train your hair; for me it did anyway. Pick a good time to do it, when you won’t drive yourself crazy having greasy hair. I trained my hair over a year ago, while I was camping for a week. Besides, think of all the extra time you will have to study or watch Netflix on the days you don’t wash your hair.

Along with training you hair there are a couple of tips every girl should know about washing her hair.

TIPS EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WASHING HER HAIR 1

ONLY SHAMPOO THE TOP OF YOUR HAIR Just massage shampoo into your roots, the ends of your hair will get all the soap they need when you wash out the shampoo.

2

ONLY CONDITION THE ENDS Slopping a bunch of conditioner on the top of your head will only increase your greasy hair problems. Besides, think of all of the money you will save on conditioner!

Now onto the miracle that is dry shampoo. Let me just state it for the record: dry shampoo is a girls best friends. Trust me. If you haven’t already found your perfect dry shampoo, let me suggest the ‘Not Your Mothers’ brand of dry shampoo, it works wonders. Just spray some of that stuff on your roots, brush through you hair, and POOF greasy hair no more. Baby powder is another great solution to greasy hair. Using a big, make up brush you can dab baby powder into your hair to absorb the oils. It’s a trick my mom has been using since I was little. It’s basically the old school version of dry shampoo. Also, just try not to touch your hair a lot during the day. The oils on your skin will only increase the greasiness of your roots. Just a tip for my girls with bangs. On my off days I still want my bangs to look fresh, so I wash my bangs in the sink with the shampoo in the morning. I’m pretty sure the girls in my hall think I’m crazy sticking my head in the sink, but it works like a charm. I’ve been doing it for years. I hope that I was able to help you answer your question about how often you should be washing your hair. It only takes a short period of time to be able to master you hair and its greasiness. Once you get over the hill that is training your hair, its all-smooth sailing from then on. I wish you the best of luck on your future hair endeavors.

Stand Up to the Elements

How to keep your hair looking good all season long. By Madison Dick

iving in Minnesota it becomes clear that you’re not going to be walking to class rocking gorgeous voluminous hair considering it’s probably snowing/ sleeting/raining or all three. But this shouldn’t stop you from trying to stay warm, practical, and cute. Rocking baseball hats/beanies/ headbands will give your entire ensemble personality, and can also make you look and feel good even though the tundra of Minnesota isn’t exactly cooperating with your recent blowout.

“Contrary to popular belief, baseball hats can be adorable!” Sources: http://www.allure.com/beauty-trends/ blogs/daily-beauty-reporter/2013/06/how-to-weara-baseball-hat.htmlhttp://www.cosmopolitan.com/ style-beauty/fashion/advice/a7189/reasons-you-area-hat-person/

21

“I’m-too-busyto-actually-carebut-I-still-lookcarefree-andcute!” How to rock a baseball hat: Last time I checked boys only wore baseball hats when their hair was gross and they didn’t want people to look at them. Well what if my hair’s gross and I don’t want people to look at me? Contrary to popular belief, baseball hats can be adorable and honestly essential when it starts getting cold and you want to protect yourself from the Minnesota

charm in a feminine way. Anything beachy or messy. You want bedhead hair.” This screams I’m-too-busyto-actually-care-but-I-still-lookcarefree-and-cute, and it also saves you the trouble from trying to do your hair before going to class, and trying to re do it once you get to class and realize its all messed up because it recently snowed while you were walking.

Beanies/Stocking Caps: If it’s especially cold beanies and stocking caps will keep you warm and save you the trouble of actually doing your hair. If you really are feeling lazy and don’t want to do your hair simply putting a stocking cap on will hide your messiness and no one will honestly notice. If you’re feeling a little more productive simply brushing a few strands around your face and then putting a beanie on the back of your head will make you look a little cuter, more put together and trendy. Cosmopolitan also adds

that if you are trying to hide your bangs or got a bad haircut a beanie or a hat is a great way to hide it.

“A lot of fashion isn’t based on what’s actually in style currently, but what you personally feel comfortable in.” Wintery Headbands: These are a great way to actually do your hair and keep your ears warm at the same time. This would be a practical way to keep your ears warm in the depths of Minnesota winters, while rocking a blowout. This look is also kind of channeling the 80’s which is totally in style right now.

Mariah Champ, retail merchandise major at the University of Minnesota says that vintage is really in right now, therefore this would be a great look this season. She also mentions that recently a lot of people have been wearing simply what they’re comfortable in. A lot of fashion isn’t based on what’s actually in style currently, but what you personally feel comfortable in. She adds, “if you have the confidence to wear a winter headband from the 80’s, you rock that.”

ecently when I was looking across the internet I stumbled upon a very unique and interested website calledviolentlips.com. The WAM Shop.

Whether you are sh opping for your mom, roommate, si ster, or to treat yourself after a long day, be sure to stop by the WAM shop and check out the wide array of merchandise perfect for this ho liday season and any other occasion worth celebrating.

The WAM Shop: a little bit of something for everyone

T

he Weisman Art Museum Shop is a seamless part of the art museum itself. The museum’s mantra of “alive, approachable and smart” echoes in each hand-selected item sold. No matter the budget or occasion, there are artful products for everyone. This fall, I had the opportunity to sit down with WAM Shop Manager and Buyer Marissa Onheiber to talk more about the hidden gem known as the WAM Shop. Many of the products the shop features come from local Minnesota designers. Marissa pointed out that handmade, local items are some of the store’s bestsellers, because being able to support an artist’s work and their story resonates with customers. Can you walk me through the process of selecting products for the store? Going off of Frank Gehry’s design of the building there is a combination of modern and natural elements that can be found within the interior design of the shop. Gehry’s shapes and material choices are very modern, he uses wood prominently. I gain inspiration from the distinctive, natural and clean feeling of the museum. I

27

look for thoughtfully designed products where the natural and modern elements merge. I also take into consideration the museum’s branding words: alive, approachable and smart. It is important for students to know that we offer affordable items. A perception of museum stores is that we are filled with very expensive items, when really, we feature a lot of affordable options for students. While we do have higher priced items for our donors, we also have a high percentage of products that are $30 and under. As we approach the holiday season, what are some gift ideas for students? There are so many ideas! We have scarves, jewelry, and socks with cute messages on them that are super fun. The quality of price is pretty amazing on our leather goods such as the journals, key chains and nicely made leather bracelets. We have a line of bath and body products that is local. Their holiday line is popular during the holiday season and is reasonably priced. Our paper products such as journals and gift books are also great gift ideas. We have a special card collection as

By Meg Kelly well to help you find a personal and funny card for that special someone. Many people don’t know that students, staff and faculty of the University of Minnesota can rent art through the Weisman at an extremely affordable price. Students are able rent up to three artworks a semester for $15 each. Faculty and departments on campus are able to rent up to five artworks for the entire year for $45 each.

Marissa’s Take: The art rental program has been around before the building was even here. It is such a unique opportunity, there are so few places where you can go and rent original artwork. The art rental program was designed to cultivate a love of art and a love of living with art. It is a unique experience to be able to come into the store and select something that has a value and a life beyond for an affordable rental fee.

Gettin’ Iggy With It

The weather may have been cold, but the sold-out TCF Bank Stadium was set ablaze once Australian rap phenomenon Iggy Azalea took the stage for the treasured homecoming concert. By: Aaron J. Roundtree

29

Following Mac Miller criticized performance from last years Spring Jam, students had been eager to hear who would grace the concert stage for the University’s 100th Annual homecoming. Many different artists circulated the campus on who would preform, but when the iconic Iggy Azalea was announced it created a high anticipation throughout the University. Despite arriving on stage later than scheduled, Iggy made up for it with her setlist; performing the popular singles from her debut album The New Classic including: “Black Widow”, the aggressive “Fuck Love”, and the song of the summer “Fancy”. Though all of Billboard singles were accounted for, some of her lesser-known songs attracted interest from the crowd, instantly creating new fans. Iggy’s fierce background dancers accompanied her well, but the most enjoyment was seeing students shake their booty’s in delight as well. Iggy’s opening flame did not last long though, Minnesota’s mid-

October weather began to bear down on the Australian goddess; causing her to shiver more than the bopping crowd, sending the crisp night into a downward spiral (just wait until mid-January Ms. Azalea).

“All-in-all it was by far the most fun homecoming concert I attended during my time spent at the University...” Senior Hailey Mix said, “All-in-all it was by far the most fun homecoming concert I attended during my time spent at the University, despite Iggy’s lack of emotion towards the end.” I wouldn’t expect Iggy Azalea to be returning to Minneapolis anytime soon; but on the Brightside, the University of Minnesota hosted one of the most famous rappers in the world for one night Now how fancy is that?

A DEFINITIVE GUIDE ON HOW TO GET GREAT GAME DAY STYLE

he allure of football season comes with the first fall breezes, but dedicated Gopher fans know that it can last long after snow has fallen. Nothing says game day like donning as much maroon and gold as humanly possible. But where to start? Any student at the U has at least one piece of Minnesota gear (free TCF sweatshirt, anyone?), but it’s no fun to not layer. So sift through your maroon and gold and get creative with our game day style guide!

THE STAPLES

If you don’t own a pair of gopheralls yet, you must be a new transfer student or have spent all that money on too much Mesa. Gopheralls are an absolute must when attending football games and if you don’t have them, you are in the minority. Their bright maroon and gold stripes have you covered on school spirit, so it’s easy to throw them on over a tee or tank and head out. If you’re looking for a no-thought-needed outfit, just pull on your season ticket t-shirt. In Jerrysota, this may only last you until the first week of October, but it’s always a good bet when you’re in a rush.

TRENDY ALTERNATIVES

Spirit Jerseys aren’t just for sorority women anymore. The bookstore sells those perfectly-baggy long sleeves in gold, maroon, and gray and you should invest in all three. They’re cute enough to wear on a week day around campus yet they’re perfect for game day, no matter the weather. To be set for the first game, fold the sleeves up past your elbow and tuck the hem into your high-waisted shorts. When the weather cools off, you can layer under the shirt to still show off your school pride without looking bulky.

GIRLY GAME DAY

If shirts emblazoned with MINNESOTA just isn’t your style, try looking through your closet to find non-U maroon and gold. A maroon dress paired with tons of gold accessories is game day chic and will show you have more interests beyond football. Using color instead of school-focused clothes lets your personality come through.

DON’T FORGET ACCESSORIES!

A maroon manicure with a gold glitter accent nail is a subtle but classy way to cheer on the Gophers. Hair bows in maroon or gold are a great way to dress up your hair. Small tattoos of Goldy or the block M never fail anyone on gameday. You can even use fall’s trendiest lip color, maroon, to show off your school style.

The U’s colors of maroon and gold leave the options wide open to score a great outfit. If you keep your eye out while buying textbooks or shopping in the mall, you’re sure to find a game day ensemble that fits exactly what you’re looking for. Now get out there and cheer on the Gophers!

CONCERT TIPS

Spring will bring tons of new music and artists to Minneapolis, so brush up on your concert-going manners now! Do your research. Concerts are always more exciting when you know who’s playing and what songs they’re playing. That’s not to say that you’ll have a terrible time if you show up with absolutely no knowledge of the artists, but you’d definitely have more fun if you could sing along with the crowd.

Arrive early. Take into consideration whether you have general admission seats, the popularity of the artist/band, as well as the degree to which you like them. Some people choose to wait half an hour before doors open, some people decide to show up right when doors open, and others opt to show up ten minutes before the show. Just use your best judgment when gauging the right time to head out. If you’re short, go for the front row. As a person that’s roughly five inches shorter than the average woman, it’s a struggle finding a decent spot at a concert. There have been plenty of times my legs ached the next day from tiptoeing for hours straight. So if you’re short, aim for the front, otherwise try to find an actual seat (there’s usually a very limited amount depending on where you go).

Mind your manners. Let’s be real, there will always be concert jerks. But the least you can do is not be one of them. Yes, that means wearing deodorant, not being obnoxious during the show, and not invading anybody’s personal bubble (including pushing, shoving, punching, awkwardly grinding on strangers, etc.).

Buy tickets on time. Being a broke college kid, it’s really easy to put off buying concert tickets. And that can very often result in tickets selling out right under your nose. The general rule is that if you care enough about the band, secure your tickets far ahead of time. But if the band is obscure enough, then chances are you’ll be fine Dress comfortably. It’s that simple. With many concerts, and especially for general admission type of deals, you’ll be standing the whole time. You may or may not be squished amongst a sea of hundreds of people. If you add up the time you spend waiting in line, waiting for the show to begin, watching the opening act, and then finally the main act, that’s a lot of time standing.

Rock on. Depending on the type of concert, it may or may not be appropriate to head bang. But nonetheless, concerts are more enjoyable when your body moves to the music, at least to some degree. You can nod your head, sway sideways, do the cheesy arms in the air, but just make sure you’re not standing still. Sure, you might look stupid, but you’ll probably have more fun than the cool kid leaning against the wall in the back.

ROCK ON! 38

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS final thoughts Everyone tries to set goals for the New Year, but how can you achieve yours? By Madison Dick ew Year’s Resolutions are always an excellent idea. A New Year is motivation to drop some bad habits, start fresh, and improve upon yourself. However, it’s pointless to have a new years resolution if you don’t actually follow through with your goals. According to Time Magazine some of the top ten most broken New Year’s resolutions include losing weight, quit smoking, save money, eat healthier, be less stressed, volunteer and drink less. These are all unattainable because they don’t actually have a set plan of action that will force you to achieve these goals. Some more attainable New Year’s resolutions include going to the gym three times a week in order to get fit, starting a no smoking program in order to quit, or creating a plan of action of how you’re going to save money, or getting another job in order to have more money to save. Thinking about how you want to actually follow through with this new year’s resolution before New Year’s is another way to make sure your resolution is actually achievable. Eating like crap until January first and then trying to be healthy might be difficult and discouraging. This can be difficult however considering the holidays are a great time to indulge with family and friends, so if you can’t get your act together on January first don’t let that be an excuse of why you aren’t going to follow through with your resolution. If you start actually working out, and eating healthier by the beginning of February, then that’s better late than never. If your plan doesn’t work out for the first few weeks of the month don’t let that be a deal breaker. If you don’t have any real big changes you want to make in your life for the New Year, Forbes recommends trying out a different kind of New Year’s Resolution. Instead of trying to change something drastic in your life and not actually following through with it, how

about you make a resolution to make another life lasting companion or relationship in your life this year? This could be anything from a new friend, to a new significant other, or someone who will make this next year more enjoyable and happy for you. Or you could decide to have a more open and accepting view of others, to try not to judge as much, and create new relationships this way. This could be a more productive to make plans for the New Year and actually stick with them. This could leave you feeling happier, more fulfilled, and lead to a great New Year.
