WHY ANGUILLA?

Discover Anguilla, an enchanting island in the eastern Caribbean that is a mecca for discerning travellers worldwide. For investors, the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles represents a chance to acquire prime properties in an idyllic country that fully supports luxury tourism and development. (And discourages cruise ship mass tourism.) It boasts easy travel access, a sound infrastructure, all the services needed to build and maintain properties, many sustainable ESG (environmental, social, and governance) options, world-class resorts, and much more. Anguilla exerts an irresistible draw for high-net-worth visitors attracted to its ideal year-round climate,

superb high-end restaurants, vibrant culture, and many outdoor activities enjoyed against the backdrop of a land and sea paradise. Short boat or plane rides can take visitors to the exciting islands of Saint Martin/ Sint Martin and St. Barths.1 While only 35 miles square, Anguilla boasts 33 beaches (many with pure white sand), aquamarine tides, friendly, welcoming people, and all the luxury amenities one can ask for. The U.K. territory (with its own stable, autonomous government) is filled with endless beauty and irresistible charm. For top-tier real estate investors, Anguilla is paradise indeed.2

The inhabitants of Anguilla speak a refined English, full of British nuance—a nod to the island’s long connection to the United Kingdom.

Anguilla has an idyllic tropical climate with many cooling breezes and only moderate rainfalls. Average temperatures of 75 to 85°F (24 to 30°C) make it easy to spend quality time alfresco on the beach, dining or relaxing with drinks on a property terrace.1

The Anguilla legal system is firmly rooted in the principles of English common law. A tripartite system of courts carries out the administration of justice—the Magistrate’s Court, the High Court, and the Court of Appeal—all of which fall under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Justice.

TAX E S

The official currency of Anguilla is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD), which maintains a steadfast exchange rate pegged to the U.S. dollar at a ratio of XCD $2.7 to USD $1. The U.S. dollar is widely accepted across the island. A comprehensive network of banking facilities, including ATMs, is readily available, dispensing U.S. dollars for the convenience of inhabitants and visitors alike.

The current Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate2 is 13%, and the registration threshold is the annual or expected annual turnover of XCD $300,000. Entities must register within a span of 15 days when they realize that the stipulated threshold has been attained. Even when the threshold still needs to be met, the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) may consider the prospect of voluntary registration.3

Anguilla is a legitimate tax-exempt sanctuary with no direct taxation, including income tax, capital gains tax, gift tax, net worth tax, inheritance tax, or corporate taxation. It is one of a group of countries that now offers citizenship by investment, making it an attractive destination for high-net-worth investors. Backed by a well-regulated financial industry, Anguilla offers an expedited incorporation process that sometimes can take as little as a day.4

Anguilla boasts some fantastic hiking trails. For example, the lovely Katouche Bay trail on the southern coast features a protected forest area. Slightly more adventurous hikers might try Little Bay, taking a boat or kayak from Crocus Bay, and then climbing down the rocky terrain to enjoy a serene, secluded beach.

The culture of Anguilla includes both homegrown and international visual artists. And the music of reggae, calypso, soca, and country plays everywhere. Listen to reggae legend Bankie Banx at his home, the Dune Preserve, for a one-of-a-kind island experience.

The Aurora International Golf Course1 was redesigned by Greg Norman in 2022. It was recently ranked one of the best courses in the Caribbean, boasting spectacular views of Saint Martin and the sea at the tee box of the 384yard starting hole. The new strategic design enhances both its playability and sustainability.

A short boat ride takes visitors to this spit of soft sand surrounded by warm turquoise water. Enjoy cool island cocktails and freshly caught seafood at the rustic beachfront bar. Strolling and snorkelling are also on the menu.

UTILITIES & LOGISTICS

Anguilla’s electrical infrastructure is designed to accommodate type A power plug sockets, operating at a standard voltage of 110 volts with a frequency of 60 Hz. This ensures compatibility with a broad range of electronic devices. American visitors do not need adaptors.1

Healthcare facilities on the island offer a range of services at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, as well as the private Hughes Medical Center and Atlantic Star Center. Local clinics and physicians also provide good non-emergency care.2

Driving on Anguilla is generally easy, with a mostly flat landscape, though it is on the left side of the road due to the island’s British heritage. Visitors can ask for vehicle rentals with steering wheels on the left side. Taxis and chauffeur-driven vehicles are also options for those who don’t want to drive.3

The Blowing Point Ferry Terminal, offering immigration and customs facilities, is a crucial gateway to neighboring islands such as Saint Martin/ Sint Maarten and St. Barths. Ferries run four times daily to Marigot Port on Saint Martin (the French side of the island).

The island’s water supply is potable and safe for consumption. Bottled water—including Aronel, a local brand—is also available at most hotels, villas, supermarkets, and convenience stores.

Road Bay, nestled in Sandy Ground, is a bustling port and harbor teeming with boats, bars, nightclubs and restaurants. It offers a dynamic atmosphere as the epicentre of Anguilla’s nightlife and the island’s busiest bay for boat traffic.4

ANGUILLA AIRPORT

Named after the island’s first aviator, Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport is located near Anguilla’s capital. The small airport now offers direct flights through American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Tradewind Aviation and Anguilla Air Services. Visitors can also land at the international airports at Saint Martin and Sint Maarten, and then travel to Anguilla by boat or plane.1

Travellers can, as well, fly their private jets to Anguilla, landing at the north end of the airport, serviced by Lloyd’s Aviation Services, which has looked after private air services since 2004. It offers customers discreet arrivals and departures, private immigration and customs processing, computerized flight planning, a comfortable lounge, and more.2

PORTS & MARINAS

Most ships moor in Road Bay/Sandy Ground, a sizable, shallow inlet on the island’s north shore. There are no berths for cruise ships or private yachts, so tenders carry passengers ashore to the dock and wonderful beach. Ships occasionally anchor off Blowing Point, the primary ferry terminal on the southern side. More dockage for visiting yachts is coming.

The soon-to-be-unveiled Aurora Entertainment Park will be an exhilarating aquatic adventure featuring a sprawling half-acre swimming pool with a river, water slides, a child-friendly splash pad, exclusive cabanas, and more. The activity center will include tennis and pickleball courts, basketball and sand volleyball courts, bocce ball courts, a rock-climbing wall, and an 18-hole miniature golf course. A dedicated kids and teens activities centre will offer video games, table tennis, billiards, air hockey, and a dance floor with a video screen and jukebox.

The Altamer Resort in Shoal Bay West is refurbishing its three luxury villas and developing a marina to offer an elevated waterfront experience. The Altamer Yacht Club and Marina intends to be the “premier mega-yacht destination in the Eastern Caribbean” and the first such facilities on Anguilla. It will offer a deep, safe inner harbor with a protected entrance, a wide turning basin, in-slip fueling, state-of-theart shore power, and a convenient base to explore the surrounding crystal-white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and nearby resorts.2

Waldorf Astoria is readying to launch its latest jewel in the crown, the Rendezvous Bay Hotel, Spa & Super Yacht Marina Resort. It will include 40 residential beachfront villas. All the villas’ two to five bedrooms will transform into opulent suites with full bathrooms. The villas will also boast a “beach walkout” feature, offering direct access to Rendezvous Bay Beach’s crystal-clear waters.1

The Government of Anguilla is currently undertaking a 20-year short-term and long-term plan to renovate the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport to meet the demands of an anticipated increase in air travel to and from Anguilla. Renovations and expansion are underway to accommodate more air traffic, larger aircraft, and more direct flights to the destination. The renovations will also add seating and space in the waiting area and more desk space in ticketing, helping to improve the quality of travellers’ airport experience.

Employment authorizations, or work permits, are usually arranged with the governing authorities at the beginning of large ventures. The process, while methodical, acknowledges the need for more local expertise. Properties in Paradise, for example, holds work permits for 30% of its workforce.

Anguilla is home to two domestic banking establishments:

Both institutions provide a wide range of loan facilities, with comprehensive application and approval processes. Anguilla also has three offshore banks.

Up to 100% foreign corporate ownership is permitted in Anguilla. A minimum of one shareholder and one director is required for companies there, but they do not need to be residents of Anguilla. U.S. business owners should be aware that businesses on the island cannot operate as limited liability corporations (LLCs).

• Republic Bank Anguilla Limited (previously known as Scotiabank) • National Commercial Bank of Anguilla Limited (NCBA).

The Central Bank of Eastern Caribbean (ECCB) is the governing body that regulates banking activities in Anguilla, while the Financial Service Commission (FSC) oversees and licenses operations within this industry.
