READ BROTHERS ADAPTIVE REUSE

Located in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, this adaptive reuse project transforms a condemned general store into a restaurant, music venue, and office spaces. To add to the existing corner building, two buildings were designed on the surrounding site containing retail, office, and residential spaces.

CHARLESTON PARKLET DESIGNS

Designed for three different locations in Charleston, South Carolina, these parklets strive to reflect their surrounding area. “SIGHTLINE” is an extension of a local coffee shop. “BOGARD PLACE” is designed to sit between a pizza place and a local dive bar. “AIKEN-RHETT ACCESS” is connected to a museum, providing an intereactive entrance into the museum.

S I G H T L I N E Sightline is located in front of Sightsee Shop + Coffee in the Elliotborough neighborhood . The site is also directly across the street from elliotborough park and community garden. The parklet provides an accessible outdoor dining option. The design is driven by the community boards at each end. These include a public bulletin board as well as inwardfacing chalk boards. Seating is

provided in various forms, both built-in and movable. The seating arrangements were designed to be used for eating and drinking, as well as waiting on coffee. The entire parklet is covered for rain and sun protection. The materiality and color choices drew inspiration from the interior and the exterior of the adjacent coffee shop. This creates a cohesiveness on the site. A planter between seating creates separation and connects to the nearby natural features.

BOGARD PLACE Bogard place, located at the intersection of Bogard Street and St Philip Street, aims to combine pizza and beer with a welcoming outdoor experience. The parklet is strategically placed between D’Allesandro’s pizza and Cutty’s, a neighborhood bar. The two businesses share an owner and patronage of both locations is encouraged. Therefore, a common space on Bogard Street is beneficial to both and continues to promote customer traffic between the businesses.

Bogard place provides dining areas in the form of a booth, as well as an elevated bar top. Central to the parklet is a two-sided gas fireplace, creating a cozy and inviting space. Built-in seating is in place throughout to create separation for those dining in the booth and other patrons wishing to enjoy the fire. The raised area creates a more dynamic space and encourages circulation between levels. This open area has ample seating and standing space for social interaction. The parklet is nestled under two palmetto trees, creating shaded space for daytime visitors.

AIKEN-RHETT ACCESS Aiken-Rhett Access is proposed to be adjacent to the Aiken-Rhett House Museum. The parklet will be a threshold to the building, providing an informative entrance into the museum. The base of the design is a ramp, which aims to make the landmark more accessible. Visitors can enter the parklet from the street level and follow the ramp to the exit near the museum entrance, all while learning from interactive screens. The screens will inform patrons about the Aiken-

Rhett House before they experience its interior. Bench seating is provided within the shaded parklet to allow for waiting and conversations between visitors. The wooden walls surrounding the parklet hold vertical pocket partitions that can be raised to enclose the structure after hours. The proportions and the materiality of the design are inspired by the facade of the Aiken-Rhett house. A green roof brings life to the design and ties the parklet to the greenery surrounding the site, all while providing a shaded space for museum guests.

THE BOARDWALK: LOUISVILLE

The design of this project solves two crucual site issues, all while providing housing and maker spaces. First, the shape of the building addresses the highway sounds and pollution. Second, the boardwalk can adapt to become a floodwall when the river rises. The goal was to reclaim the middle ground between the highway and the river.
