Tip: Trying to deprive ourselves from all treats only sets us up for failure and then we beat ourselves up for failing. Try choosing a heathier option this Valentine’s day. For example, grab those dark chocolate covered strawberries versus the box of mixed chocolates. You can visit my website for the recipe for chocolate candy without sugar that is fabulous!

BUCKET LIST DENTED
EUROPEAN STYLE
By SHARON WERNLUND
Marie Antoinette, Harry Potter, the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben were among the unwitting allies that waged war on my bucket list. Normally, our Winnebago is our vacation-on-wheels to check off must-sees and experiences but this time, my hubby Chris and I opted for Christmas in Paris and New Year’s in London.
Our European adventure began Dec. 19th aboard the Viking in the heart of Paris with the Eiffel Tower visible in the distance. Our cruise, “Christmas on the Seine” was an 8-day voyage on this romantic river with stops for walking tours, shopping and sight-seeing.
Every day was a baptism from culture to cuisine with our feeble attempts to speak the language from our “French for Dummies” book. Luckily, the ship’s daily newsletter was our compass for everything from the weather report and mealtime to on-board fun, facts and shore excursions.
Highlights included: Watching the Eiffel Tower glitter from top to bottom on Christmas Day. Touring the Palace of Versailles to see Marie Antoinette’s bedroom with escape door and the famous Hall of Mirrors – a decadent corridor of gilded statues and crystal chandeliers – where the signing of the 1919 treaty ended World War I. Strolling the Champs-Elysees, Latin Quarter and Christmas markets in festive splendor. Melting into the masses at the Louvre Museum to eyeball the Mona Lisa. Discovering a pedestrian tunnel, bypassing the busy traffic circle, to touch the Arc de Triomphe commissioned by Napoleon in 1806. Entering the Notre Dame Cathedral – an 860-year-old wonder of stained glass, stone carvings and religious artifacts – that recently opened to the public after the devastating fire. Amid white Latin crosses and stars of David, we walked the hallowed grounds of the Normandy American Cemetery, the site of nearly 9,400 graves and memorials; and then stood at Omaha Beach where D-Day casualties were highest.
Ports of call included the village of Vernon for an organ recital in a

Medieval church. In Les Andelys, we braved a steep hill to the ruins of Richard the Lionheart of England’s castle, built in 1196. In Rouen, we toured a cathedral that impressionist Claude Monet painted over 30 times and the marker where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431.
From Paris, we rode the Eurostar, a high-speed train to London, including 35 minutes under the English Channel through the Chunnel. Our hotel room, though small and cramped, was an easy walk to Trafalger Square, Big Ben, the London Eye and Houses of Parliament. Nearby, the British Museum is world renowned for its massive collection from mummies to the Rosetta Stone.
Easy transportation was the Tube (subway) and the double-decker Toot Bus with guided tour from London Bridge and 10 Downing Street to the Tower of London, Harrods and Buckingham Palace.
On New Year’s Eve, we watched London’s spectacular fireworks on
television since tickets were sold out. A bigger blast was a New Year’s Day tour of Churchill’s World War II bunker with war room, kitchen and even the prime minister’s bedroom and signature cigar.
Aptly, we spent our last day at a British pub with pints of Guinness and fish and chips across from the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel. The redbricked Victorian-Gothic masterpiece, opened in 1868, is unforgettable in the flying car scene in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
Unfortunately, there was no Hogwarts Express for a fast-track home to Palm City. That would take more than a dozen hours of travel, long lines and bad food. All of which was magically forgotten with good memories, photos and a much shorter bucket list.

Stay Healthy This February: Tips to Ward Off Winter Viruses
February often brings more than just love in the air— it’s also peak season for colds, flu, and other viruses. With cooler temperatures and more time spent indoors, it’s the perfect environment for germs to spread. But don’t worry! A few mindful habits can help you stay healthy and keep those pesky bugs at bay.
1. Boost Your Immune System
Your immune system is your first line of defense, so give it a little extra care:
• Eat nutrient-rich foods: Incorporate fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your meals to ensure you’re getting essential vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits) and zinc (found in nuts and seeds) are particularly helpful for immunity.
• Stay hydrated: Even in cooler weather, staying well-hydrated is crucial for overall health. Warm herbal teas or lemon water can be soothing and hydrating.
• Get quality sleep: Your body repairs and recharges itself during sleep. Aim for 7–9 hours a night to keep your immune system strong.
2. Practice Good Hygiene
• Wash your hands often: Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public places or touching high-contact surfaces.
• Avoid touching your face: Germs enter your body through your eyes, nose, and mouth, so minimize contact.
• Sanitize frequently used items: Wipe down your phone, keyboard, doorknobs, and other high-touch surfaces regularly.
3. Stay Active
Even in winter, physical activity can keep your body strong and resilient. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a workout at home, regular exercise helps boost your immune system and improve your mood.
4. Layer Up and Stay Warm
Cold weather doesn’t cause illness, but being chilled can lower your body’s defenses. Dress warmly in layers and keep your home at a comfortable temperature to avoid unnecessary stress on your body.
5. Protect Yourself and Others
• Get vaccinated: If you haven’t already, consider getting your flu shot or other recommended vaccines.
• Wear a mask when needed: In crowded spaces or if you’re feeling unwell, wearing a mask can help prevent spreading or catching illnesses.
• Stay home if you’re sick: Resting helps you recover faster and prevents spreading illness to others.
6. Practice Self-Care
Stress can weaken your immune system, so make time for relaxation and activities that bring you joy. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, or even a few minutes of quiet reflection can work wonders.
7. Stay Connected (Safely) February can feel isolating, but maintaining social connections is vital for mental and emotional wellbeing. Schedule virtual meetups, write a letter, or safely gather outdoors when possible.
Final Thoughts
By adopting these healthy habits, you can reduce your risk of getting sick and make the most of the winter season. Stay proactive, listen to your body, and don’t hesitate to seek medical advice if you’re feeling under the weather. Let’s make February a month of wellness, warmth, and vibrant health!
CONCIOUS, CREATIVE SPACES
1. Earthy and Warm Color Palettes
Designers are embracing rich, warm neutrals and earth tones, moving away from cooler shades. Colors like deep burgundy, navy blue, saturated greens, and terracotta are gaining prominence, adding depth and sophistication to spaces. These hues create a calming and versatile ambiance, enhancing rooms with their inviting presence. elledecor.com
2. Curved and Organic Furniture Designs
Curved lines in furniture and architecture continue to exude elegance. Soft, rounded shapes in sofas, chairs, and tables add a sense of comfort and fluidity to interiors, contrasting with rigid, angular forms. This trend brings a touch of softness and approachability to living spaces. architecturaldigest.com
3. Textured Wall Treatments
Textured wall treatments like limewash and plaster are gaining popularity, adding depth and a custom look to interiors. These finishes provide a tactile dimension to walls, creating visual interest and a sense of craftsmanship. thespruce.com
4. Sustainable and Natural Materials
There’s a growing emphasis on sustainability, with designers incorporating natural materials such as clay, ceramics, and reclaimed wood into home decor. These elements not only add warmth and authenticity but also align with eco-friendly practices, reflecting a commitment to environmental consciousness. elledecor.com
5. At-Home Wellness Spaces
Homeowners are increasingly seeking to create spaces dedicated to wellness and relaxation. This includes the addition of home spas, meditation rooms, and cozy reading nooks designed to provide a retreat from daily stresses. These spaces often feature calming colors, soft textures, and natural light to promote tranquility and well-being. elledecor.com
By incorporating these trends, homeowners can create spaces that are not only stylish but also nurturing and reflective of a conscious lifestyle.
